Tech picks up three commitments

Published on: 01/24/08

Georgia Tech has picked up three commitments in the past two days, adding a quarterback, cornerback and offensive tackle. Signing Day, the day players can make their commitments official, is Feb. 6.

Tevin Washington, a 6-1, 205-pound quarterback from Wetumpka High School in Wetumpka, Ala, committed on Sunday, after his official visit. Washington passed for 2,097 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 1,088 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior. During his career, he passed for more than 5,000 yards and rushed for more than 2,000.

Phil Smith, a 6-6, 280-pound tackle from Jesuit High School in Tampa also committed after his official visit. Smith also played defensive tackle, and had six sacks as a junior, before earning all-county honors as an offensive tackle his senior season.

Lee Butler, a 5-11, 170-pound cornerback with 4.30-second speed, committed on Wednesday. Butler had originally committed to Duke. Butler attends Westside High School in Anderson, S.C. He was being recruited by Duke, Air Force and Furman.

He told Scout.com that he has qualified academically.

Boy i hope that the staff is as god at gettin the under the radar people as the Ross and oleary guys were because it really looks a little grim but Johnson knows what he wants espacially at the qb position. I like the speed that we are recruiting. This is not a year to get a high ranking and i think that Tech people can forget the high ranking but we are not going to forget about wanting to win. If this is the way then good for us. I will keep an open mind. Hopefully next year we can get some of the studs when we have a full year and the academics which i understant were bad this year in Georgis will improve.

This is all old news by now…these commitments have been reported through these blogs for several days before the AJC bothered to report on them. There are several other players who should be committing over the next 10 days or so as well. A couple of linemen from Texas that look especially promising…Maybe the AJC will mention them next month.

It appears that this year’s recruiting ” on the lines and some fast guys at the skill positions, at least this go round. I can’t really argue with the logic when you start recruiting late in the game.

For you older Tech fans, I would remind you of the mid 1970’s, when there was a coaching change and a new regime was brought in that wanted to run the ball.

They also came in late in the recruiting cycle and seemed to be scrambling at times as they looked for players that fit their new scheme.

Tech found a tight end out of Americus, GA that no one else was really recruiting, but they thought would be a good o-line prospect. He was about 6’4’ and weighed about 225 pounds, but he had a good build and good speed.

When Kent Hill graduated from GA Tech, he was a bit over 6’6”, weighed over 285 pounds, still ran like the wind, was a first round draft pick of Rams, and became an NFL All Pro Offensive Guard for the 1980 Decade. Not bad for a player who was not rated by the services and not wanted by other programs…

I don’t know what happened to my last post…something got dropped. I tried to say that it appears that this year’s recruiting plan appears that the Coaches are looking for some big “meanies” on the lines and some fast guys at the skill positions, at least this go round. I can’t really argue with the logic when you start recruiting late in the game.

These good Tech recruits make me excited about the future again! But I enjoy the past, too:

Not to worry fellow Techsters, whatever the make up or national ranking of this year’s recruiting class will be come signing day, rest assured that CJ and staff will have done a great job under the circumstances and will have laid the ground work for future classes to be bigger and better. As it is, this class may end up being a “sleeper” anyway? It appears to have some players who can impact early and make the transition to an option offense a lot easier just in case some of the players we already have don’t work out. Besides, other than the fiascos of the Lewis and Gailey eras, Georgia Tech is known for “coaching-up” its players. Compared to the big football-factories that have more resources and hype, we’ve always done more with less. One of the reasons CJ was brought here was his reputation to decern talent and coach it to its fullest potential. My thinking is that it’s going to get a whole lot better sooner on The Flats than the naysayers think. GO JACKETS!!!

Not including what we have coming back. By the way, I heard on the radio a couple days on the radio, of all the people playing in the Senior Bowl this Sat. Funny how the AJC fails to mention that Phil Smith selected GT over Penn State. It also fails to mention that Lee Butler had taken himself off the market back in June of 2007 when committing to Duke over offers at that time from Maryland, NCState, and Vanderbilt. In reality…we do not need the AJC anyway as we found out about these commitments 4-5 days ago!! It is old news! Maybe tomorrow the AJC can break a story on Tom Brady having an air cast on his right ankle!! :-)

This recruiting class was already riddled with really good speed and they keep adding more. I like it! They may not be the highest ranked players, but speed is certainly one thing the coaches won’t have to worry about when they coach these guys up. You can’t coach speed anyway. It looks like a darn good lineman class as well. Uzzi would be icing on the cake.

These UGA fans have nothing better to do than sit all day and read news about Tech. Most of the UGA grads that I meet can barely read…tells you about their school.

Also, since UGA is 3 times as large as Tech and has remedial course work that is barely above a HS level and their class work and course offerings an embarrasment, the fact that they’ve only won one football championship should be highly embarrassing but they’re too stupid to recognize it.

Sounds like a good class to me considering everything. This QB sounds like a Shawn Jones type QB out of Al. Also we are keeping most of the pre-johnson recruits and have added speed and size, which is something Ross focused on. None of his classes were really highly ranked but two ended being outstanding the one with Shawn Jones and the next one with Coleman Rudolph, etc.. The one thing I noticed in the previous years last 7 or so was the lack of big lineman, and the lack of world class speed other than Calvin, or say 4.4 or below on one or two recruits per year. This kid Wright is something else. Washington recruits shows me that Johnson plans to throw the ball more than most expect.

Yea, I’m a Dawg reading a Tech blog. I enjoy reading both sides. Plase take a look at the UGA blog and see that just as many Tech fans post on theirs before you say anything about it. Granted some of the crap posted on here(carolinadawg) does not represent the majority of the Dawg Nation just like the crap some post on the UGA blog does not represent most of the Tech nation. Personally, I wish it would stop. The football blogs are just as they are; football blogs. Let’s talk football to each other and stop the ignorant posts. Some people need to grow up and get a life.

At saying that. You guys should be excited about Coach Johnson. Give him a couple years of recriting and you guys will be back in the upper tier of the ACC. He will do good things. I personally look forward to it.

Once again, mindliess dribble from the hydrant humpers. Does anybody know what kind of “star” recruits GT had when they won the LAST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THE STATE OF GEORGIA HAS SEEN? You know, the one in 1990 that we STACKED on top of our other NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS? I like what I see so far in CPJ. He is quiet, picks up recruits that are ACADEMICALLY eligible (to the UGA people, that means they passed the ACT already, not taken it three times like some UGA recruits), they have speed and want to go to Ga. Tech. Can’t wait for the season to start.

By Wow

January 25, 2008 9:52 AM | Link to this

Us hydrant humpers like to recruit four and five star players like the ones that have beaten Tech seven years in a row, won two SEC titles in four years while making three trips to the Sugar Bowl. Every single one of our recruits from last year qualified and this year will be no different. Four of our 2008 recruits are already enrolled, this includes two four stars and a five star. I may be mistaken, but isn’t that more four and five stars than Tech has in its entire 2008 class. UGA’s biggest worry this year is if one of our many four stars will be selected in the first round of the MLB draft. I am looking forward to the next seven years. Brookwood and Parkview have better recruiting classes than Tech.

By Ramblin Wrecker

January 25, 2008 9:54 AM | Link to this

I’ve been very impressed with Paul Johnson’s recruiting so far. He’s not reeling in 5 star recruits, obviously, but his staff have been very focused and successful in adding to the commits that Gailey had gotten, firming up a number of those commits who were unsure due to the coaching change. From what I’ve read, if CPJ sits in a recruits home, they are impressed and none have said no. I read where CPJ’s philosophy is to recruit based on the Total Person Concept. What that means is character in addition to athletic talent, academics in addition to football skills. I think it is the college equivalent to the Patriots’ philosophy. You don’t need a team full of mega stars, as long as every player on the team knows their role and is committed to the team concept of winning.

Educated Dawg, You “nimrod”, it is harder to get into UGA? If true why would that be? Maybe it’s as because it has already packed that back water town of Athens full of 35,000 Dawg woofers and they’ve run out of dorm rooms and bars. You know there can only be so many up-and-coming rock bands in one po-dunk town. “Dollars-after-graduation” does matter much like “yards-after-catch”. I would think someone who is “EDUCATED” like you apparently are, would understand that. UGA does graduate a few bright students but as you know most are Business majors who know little more than GO DAWGS.

Uhhhh Buzz Belle…

The last national championship the state of Georgia has seen??

The Blazers of Valdosta State would be the correct answer…

And BTW, Being born & raised in the Atl, I’ve probably forgotten more GT gridiron history than you know.

Paul Johnson will coach up the NATS & I hope that holds true.. GT becoming a “player” in the ACC again would be nice..

I do not post to slam GT..

I no not outwardly root for GT, but wish the Jackets well…

It always looks good, nationally speaking, when GT has a winning record, when playing vs UGA on the Saturday after Thanksgiving… The Nation can see the better team…

That answer would be UGA!!!

Option Qb’s in this era of passing have not been recruited by the SEC/ACC schools, forget some of these guys can pass and improve in the passing game, ala Joe Hamilton. Teebow was an incredible passer in high school as well as runner. But our passing game was ranked close to 100 and have low percentage completion ratios. With a QB who can hit the corner those numbers will hopefully get better.

Bull Dawg Rick - Careful - I have a 28 yr old son used to join me at Tech games when he was a small child. Born and raised in Marietta - jsut down the road, always watched Tech even as a child myself. I probably can’t remember the stats you can, but my blood has always and will always run black and gold. WOW - How many of your 4 & 5 start recruits have you graduated? Thought so. The point of college is to get a quality education and if your also good in sports - that much better. At Tech, education has always and will always be the priority. Question to all (I truly want to know the answer if anybody knows), since the dawgs are so high on stars, does anybody know the percentage of say 3-5 star recruits that became “college stars” vs. the ones who weren’t rated high and became stars in college?

I can’t wait for Lee Butler to get burned by AJ Green four years in a row. I am still trying to understand what RAMBLE ON is talking about? When did I ever mention UF? I love the quote comparing Tech to the Patriots and the recruiting success of Paul Johnson. The reason no one has said no him is because Tech is the only D1 school to offer. And if he only recruits intelligent, young men that are already qualified, how did Adrian Petterson slip through the cracks? That guy’s so stupid he can barely talk.

*Now the Star-bellied Sneetches had bellies with stars. The Plain-bellied Sneetches had none upon thars. The stars weren’t so big; they were really quite small. You would think such a thing wouldn’t matter at all. But because they had stars, all the Star-bellied Sneetches would brag, “We’re the best kind of Sneetch on the beaches.”

With their snoots in the air, they would sniff and they’d snort, ” We’ll have nothing to do with the plain-bellied sort.” And whenever they met some, when they were out walking, they’d hike right on past them without even talking.

When the Star-bellied children went out to play ball, could the Plain-bellies join in their game? Not at all! You could only play ball if your bellies had stars, and the Plain-bellied children had none upon thars.

When the Star-bellied Sneetches had frankfurter roasts, or picnics or parties or marshmallow toasts, they never invited the Plain-bellied Sneetches. Left them out cold in the dark of the beaches. Kept them away; never let them come near, and that’s how they treated them year after year.

Then one day, it seems, while the Plain-bellied Sneetches were moping, just moping alone on the beaches, sitting there, wishing their bellies had stars, up zipped a stranger in the strangest of cars.

“My friends,” he announced in a voice clear and keen, “My name is Sylvester McMonkey McBean. I’ve heard of your troubles; I’ve heard you’re unhappy. But I can fix that; I’m the fix-it-up chappie. I’ve come here to help you; I have what you need. My prices are low, and I work with great speed, and my work is one hundred per cent guaranteed.”

Then quickly, Sylvester McMonkey McBean put together a very peculiar machine. Then he said, “You want stars like a Star-bellied Sneetch? My friends, you can have them … . for three dollars each. Just hand me your money and climb on aboard.”

They clambered inside and the big machine roared. It bonked. It clonked. It jerked. It berked. It bopped them around, but the thing really worked. When the Plain-bellied Sneetches popped out, they had stars! They actually did, they had stars upon thars!

Then they yelled at the ones who had stars from the start, “We’re exactly like you; you can’t tell us apart. We’re all just the same now, you snooty old smarties. Now we can come to your frankfurter parties!”

“Good grief!” groaned the one who had stars from the first. “We’re still the best Sneetches, and they are the worst. But how in the world will we know,” they all frowned, “if which kind is what or the other way ‘round?”

Then up stepped McBean with a very sly wink, and he said, “Things are not quite as bad as you think. You don’t know who’s who, that is perfectly true. But come with me, friends, do you know what I’ll do? I’ll make you again the best Sneetches on beaches, and all it will cost you is ten dollars eaches.

Belly stars are no longer in style, ” said McBean. “What you need is a trip through my stars-off machine. This wondrous contraption will take off your stars, so you won’t look like Sneetches who have them on thars.”

That handy machine, working very precisely, removed all the stars from their bellies quite nicely. Then, with snoots in the air, they paraded about. They opened their beaks and proceeded to shout, “We now know who’s who, and there isn’t a doubt, the best kind of Sneetches are Sneetches without.”

Then, of course those with stars all got frightfully mad. To be wearing a star now was frightfully bad. Then, of course old Sylvester McMonkey McBean invited them into his stars-off machine. Then, of course from then on, you can probably guess, things really got into a horrible mess.

All the rest of the day on those wild screaming beaches, the Fix-it-up-Chappie was fixing up Sneetches. Off again, on again, in again, out again, through the machine and back round about again, still paying money, still running through, changing their stars every minute or two, until neither the Plain- nor the Star-bellies knew whether this one was that one or that one was this one or which one was what one or what one was who!

Then, when every last cent of their money was spent, the Fix-It-Up-Chappie packed up and he went. And he laughed as he drove in his car up the beach, “They never will learn; no, you can’t teach a Sneetch!”

But McBean was quite wrong, I’m quite happy to say, the Sneetches got quite a bit smarter that day. That day, they decided that Sneetches are Sneetches, and no kind of Sneetch is the BEST on the beaches. That day, all the Sneetches forgot about stars, and whether they had one or not upon thars.* - The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss

Be careful what you pay attention to. The stars don’t mean anything.

I don’t know if it has been mentioned but the recruiting coordinator was the same guy that Gailey had and has worked under Johnson at Georgia Southern. So there is some continuity at that position. The criteria that the head coach wants might be different. However, you have an assistant who already has a set of contacts out there and already knows the battlefield so to speak. Might not be as bad a year as people think.

I believe your name alone tells us where you went to school (UGA). Just because a lower division school is recruiting the same player doesn’t mean the kid can’t play at a bigger school. For instance, Jerry Rice, Walter Payton and Terry Bradshaw did pretty well in the NFL after playing at small schools. And just because a kid was a QB in high school doesn’t mean he’s going to be a QB in college. Most good athletes were the QB on their high school teams and go on to play other positions in college.

To all GT fans worried about not getting the “studs” in this year’s recruiting class, take heart. Take it from someone who knows, top-ranked recruiting classes do not a juggernaut make. I’m originally from Omaha, Nebraska…Husker Red in my blood and we’ve suffered through the worst four-year stretch in Nebraska football history, merciless culminating with the firing of Bill Callahan. In each of his underachieving years, we had top five recruiting classes. One year we had a top ranked class…last year we were fourth or fifth, coming into last season with all of these bluechippers who were supposed to contribute immediately, we were actually talking about being a sleeper contender for the National Title. BIG LOL! You saw what happened to us. 5-7. During Nebraska’s hayday, Tom Osborne and Co. did more with less than arguably any other program in America. With recruiting classes barely cracking the top 30 some years, we dominated during the mid-90’s because we continuosly got guys with the three most important, yet uncoachable elements — Speed, strength and heart.

Hopefully with the new regime, we will be singing that refrain of success again in the next few years. My two-cents worth of advice: Be more concerned about your coaching than recruiting. A bunch of talented, uncoached players will do nothing but create complaints and stomach ulcers.

So Butler has 4.30 speed, but was only being recruited by Duke, Air Force and Furman? What, does he not have arms or something?

Simple reminder folks: Notre Dame has had about 20 top 10 recruiting classes in a row- losing record and no championship, even with the number one quarterback in the country years in a row. Bigger is not better. Small and fast can usually avoid the hit. Hope these “gnats” can hide behind the linemen for 5-10 yards a pop. I can’t wait to see a long run by a fast guy again. Last time was almost 20 years ago for Tech. Go Jackets.

Hey Wow,

Adrian Peterson is a fantastic, intelligent, hard working and dignified kid who just happens to have speak impediment. You, on the other hand, are none of the above.

Remember, it is better to be quiet and be thought stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Coach Johnson and his staff know how to “Coach-Up” players. Player rankings do not matter. See Notre Dame!!!!I have the utmost confidence in the ability of Paul Johnson to recognize talent and project performance with strong fundamental emphasis. He is also going to find some untapped speed merchants that are not on the radar.

Fear the nerd!! I blame the One Laptop Per Child Project for all the UGA bloggers. Nice to see it’s working though. At least us nerds have won a National Championship since the Carter administration.

Hunker, hunker, woof, woof, sick’em, arf arf!!

Notice that all of these guys are from out of state. Good to see that the recruiting process is looking all around for talent. In fact, I’d like to see more of it. Tech’s strengths are good academics, location in downtown Atlanta, easy access to flights anywhere in the country and an education that has actual value.

The only recruits that GA can get are the in-state knuckleheads that can’t read. Nobody from the Northeast or the West coast is going to enroll at the cow pasture in Athens. Tech should start expanding its appeal nationally and pull the best talent from everywhere.

jimd26 - I do stand corrected. My kids colors are black and gold and I’m so involved in their sports now I misspoke. thank you cor the correction. Bleeding black and gold sounds better than bleeding white and gold though. :) Speaking of sports - got to go to a soccer game - catch ya later - THWG

Well July Jones, way to research before speaking. Knowshon Moreno is from New Jersey. UGA has a tight end from California, another tight end and QB from Missouri and the most Rhodes scholars of any school in the South. Don’t let the facts confuse you.

This morning I want to set the record straight on the DJ Donnely transfer. WE DON”T NEED HIM. We only want players who want to wear the Old Gold and White, or black or yellow and sometimes blue. It does not matter that we have lost Collin Peek or that our QB is transfering. We are going in a different direction.

Just look at the recruits we have signed. Speed, Speed, Speed. The DB we wrested from Duke can fly. The Athlete we stole from Mid Tenn and the RB we snatched from Tulsa, all can fly. WE are on a guy from Roswell right now who runs a 4.2. We think we will get him. He has no other offers right now cause he has not played football since 7th grade. But you ought to see him go. So don’t worry about who is not here. Lets worry about who is here. PJ is building a team his way. We have Samford to get ready for.
