Georgia offers four junior quarterbacks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/24/08
Oconee County’s Zach Mettenberger is among four quarterback recruits in the Class of 2009 who received scholarship offers from Georgia last week.
“It’s cool, it’s hometown,” said Mettenberger, who lives about 10 miles from Athens in neighboring Watkinsville. “Getting that offer means I’d get to stay near family and my friends.”
The family reference includes his mother Tammy Mettenberger, who is an administrative assistant in the Georgia football coaches’ office.
Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo delivered the good news to his longtime friend on Jan. 18.
“I had called [Bobo] to see what’s up,” Mettenberger said. “It was our regular monthly call. He told me then.
“Coach Bobo had told me that I was high on their list and he’d been wanting to offer me for awhile. They had a coaches meeting that day and agreed to offer me.”
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Mettenberger already had offers from Boston College and Florida State.
“And I did have an offer from Ole Miss, but due to the coaching change I don’t have that offer anymore,” he said.
With nearly 13 months ahead of him before he’s scheduled to sign a letter of intent, Mettenberger intends to do plenty of research on Georgia and other colleges prior to making a commitment.
“I plan on taking visits to North Carolina, Duke, Connecticut, Boston College and Northwestern,” he said. “Georgia is above the other schools just because you’ll be near your friends and family.
“But I’m going to try my best not to be biased with that. During my visits, I’ll be looking for what’s best for me.”
Junior quarterbacks who received an offer from UGA on Jan. 18 include Matt Barkley of Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., Zach Mettenberger of Oconee County in Watkinsville, Aaron Murray of Plant Senior High in Tampa and Tom Savage of Cardinal O’Hara High in Springfield, Penn.
Barkley committed to Southern Cal earlier this week.

Depends on the source. 4 out of 5 have UGA ahead but rivals put UF in 1st just because of Omar Hunter. They’ll both have solid classes just as Alabama will. Wouldn’t trade coaches with anyone though. Richt will bring it home in ‘08 and beyond!!! Just saw where you guys are going to be taking a week off before UGA this year(like you do most years). You’re gonna need it! It won’t matter though, UGA will still win

I hope Mettenberger doesn’t do what Zebrie did playing the waiting game. The Dawgs will only take two and if two of the others commit on the same day, Mettenberger will be SOL. I’m sure he is thinking he will commit after one of the others does. I can’t imagine he would actually truly want to go anywhere else.

Jeff, I wouldn’t be putting Tennessee behind you until the Dawgs beat them. I believe the Vols won the SEC East this year, and the combined score the last two years has been 86-47. They basically only lose their quarterback who was not too hot anyway (see SEC championship game).

WOW, now OSU will actually have to play two good teams(Michigan and USC) this year! Give me a break. The SEC schedule is tough enough but we do play tough non conference games every year. We couldn’t help it if Colorado had gone downhill after we put them on our scedule. And how were we to know that Boise State was no match for us after putting up all those impressive stats in the WAC? Oklahoma State was no slouch either. And didn’t UT play Cal a couple of years in a row? The SEC is not scared of anyone because it is the best in the country and anyone with common sense knows that. Let’s break it down shall we. Big-Ten: weak. Ohio Stae, Michigan, and a decent Wisconsin, Pac-Ten: weak. USC, Oregon(sometimes), UCLA(occaisionally), Big-12: mediocre. Oklahoma and Texas are the only teams consistent( especially Oklahoma consistently losing in bowl games). Big East: whatever! WAC: PLEASE don’t try to play UGA again! You’ve tried an undefeated Hawaii and Boise and neither came close. Anyway, you get the point(I hope). The SEC has to battle each other all year long and our toughest games are against each other! Look at UGA’s schedule next year. First is GA Southern and then it’s tough, at least on paper, the rest of the way. The back to back MAC champs are coming to town and then we play ASU on the road so don’t tell me that the SEC doesn’t play anyone tough outside the conference. NOBODY has it harder than SEC teams, especially UGA in ‘08 but we will be ready! 12-0 with the hardest schedule in the country. Let’s go dawgs!!!

As a person that lives in the state of Florida I can honestly say that the reason there is no mention about the Dawgs OR any other College team outside of Florida is due to the lack of journalism in this state. The Tampa and Orlando papers are the Worst! They must have all graduated from Florida. No clue on what goes n outside of this state.
At least the AJC is opened to the East Coast so people like you can blog on this web site. I don’t believe that The Tampa Tribune or Orlando Sentinel have figured out how to set that up yet. Don’t insult yourself in speaking about the Newpapers here in Florida and compare them to the AJC.

All I know is that on this type of blog before the Ga/Fla game this year, most every dawg fan did not think Georgia had a chance against Florida…mainly because of the level of talent Florida has. Well, that has not changed m(even though you won). The talent is still there, and it will be raised a major level next year, especially on defense. And Florida is adding some of the best players in the country on the defensive side of the ball this year. Hill, Finley, Buchanon, McGray, Hunter, Beal, etc. Enjoy your one in a while victory while you can. You can bet the Gstors already have the GEORGIA bullsh—-ers game on the target board already.

You think the only reason UGA beat UF this year was due to a poor Gator Defense? Then enlighten us how OUR DEFENSE poured through YOUR OFFENSIVE LINE and sacked Tebow more times in that game than he had been sacked ALL PREVIOUS GAMES that year.

Tebow was hurt in the Ga game and the Michigan game.
Again, following a loss, the opponent had to find him to shake his hand.
Tebow is everything they say he is and you should add he’s as arrogant as Urban, Jeremy Foley, basically the Gator Nation.
That’s the reason people in the South don’t like the Gators, unless your one of them, sitting around amongst themselves.

You know it would go something like this ” I know beat you guys by a ton in the recruiting wars every year but that’s very subjective. Tampagator, I believe you are correct in that FL added some help on defense. What I think you are missing is that WE DID TOO. In fact if you break down this years class (which you are just fooling yourself to think will have huge immediate impact to either) UGA has higher rated recruits at several defenses positions than Fl does. And the places we didnt, we were pretty loaded with young guys already. UGA has recruited every bit as well as UF over the past several years on the defensive side of the ball. As I see it, if both team added top rated players BUT one is returning a squad that was already clearly better than one the past year…………..well.
Secondly, don’t fool yourself to believe that game has any bigger circle around it than any other year. Maybe that was the problem, UF didn’t use a dark enough blue marker on the calendar last year. Now they really really want to win it, huh? You think we don’t have colorful markers too?
Lastly, Surely you are not naive enough to beleive that either team is going to start any kinds of the streaks (both ways) that we have seen in the past.

I love all the trash talk, but the bottom line is that the SEC is so tough from top to bottom that every conference game is a potential loss for any team. Every week it is the best playing the best. OU Ohio State, Michigan and USC would not esacpe an SEC conference schedule with less than three losses. IMHO an SEC Championship carries more weight and prestige than the so called “National Championship” because to get to a Nat’l Championship an SEC team has already played and beaten the other top 4 teams in the Country.

How close is SC to even winning an SEC East title - no even close - you have not even sniffed that much less an SEC Championship and the only way SC get to a NC Game is if you by tickets - SC is now a 4th tier team in the SEC - who managed to be us last year - soemtimes it is better to be lucky than good and that is what SC is lucky.

To all Gators,In my opinion unless Coach Myer changes his offense to get away from a pure spread then he will see more of the same in 08 as he did in 07 ie hurt QB and 3 or 4 losses. He was able to do that in 06 with a lot of success. The SEC defenses have gotten up to speed on the spread and unless he diversifies 07 will be a high water mark for Fla over the next 5 yrs or so

Earlier this year when Vanderbilt was about to beat Georgia (again), Georiga at that point had lost 6 SEC east games in a row. Hilarious. If Vandy would not have fumbled inside the 10 with 2 mins to go that would have been 7. Great team. Great progam. Pretenders. Weak. Go Gators.

National Champs 07:
Question my friend. How are we pretenders. When we did beat Vandy plus 6 other teams the remainder of the season. Pretenders are those who talk and don’t win. Can you say 42-30! If this is the case I’ll take pretender any day over being a Gayturd!

What is up with everyone pointing out the recruiting rankings? DOESN’T EVERYONE KNOW THAT THOSE RANKINGS ARE SUBJECTIVE. In fact, I would rather take the 25 best 3 star players in america than 25 4star playres. How many first round players in the past twenty years were ranked as 5 star recruits out of high school. I bet that out of the 28 5star recruits this year, that only 3 will be first round picks and 12 might get drafted. Rankings don’t matter, otherwise UT wouldn’t have won the SEC east last year.

What do some of you idiots expect us to do? Play an already hard schedule and then just schedule all top 10 teams outside of the conference. Name one team that doesn’t have two or three cupcakes on their list. Ohio State will only play two or three good teams this year, lose to one or two of them and still make it to the NC because they’ll look good against almost everyone except the SEC team that beats their a$$ AGAIN! Someone (Whatever) tell me who plays a tougher schedule than UGA. I can’t wait to see this. Please say OSU or USC or Oklahoma or any ACC or any other SEC team. PLEASE!!!

I don’t see Urban Liar making you guys happy more than a few more years. Seems like he’s going in the wrong direction after a NC. Glad you guys beat OSU though but trust me, there won’t be any more 15 out of 17 or 18 or whatever it was. Looks like it’s gonna be UGA and LSU playing for the SEC for a while yet.

All the Florida fans who scour the AJC looking to make thier jealousy of the Dawgs known, should probably take this recruiting year in and be thankful. From what I hear (from some SEC front office folks) is that Coach Meyer has been piling up a list of rule infractions that will set thier program back about 5 recruiting classes. Starting with letting Tebow make recruiting calls and visits. As well as offering siblings of players scholarships in other sports if they come there to play. It is easy to be number 1 when you cheat the rest I guess…

Everyone wants Matt Barkley. He’s going to USC.
As for you Gators, Florida is the flagship school of the by far most populous state in the SEC with the widely considered best football talent in America and the best facilities in America- the fact that they don’t win the SEC every year is an embarrassment. UGA does a fantastic job considering it is basically the University of Atlanta.

And had SC not held on the Winning FG, you wouldnt be able to use that handle either. What is your point? I bet I can come up with at least 3 other plays that almost had UF loosing 4 games (again) in 06’. Speaking of Vandy, I seem to remember a phantom call in the end zone during a recent UF game. By the way, our defense actually striped that ball, watch the replay.

I love watching supposedly grown men take shots at each other, over which team they follow. The sad thing is football is just entertainment and not life. People that live and die with college football, really need to get a life and grow up. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE college football, but s*it talking over something you have no control over is really pointless and adolescent.

For everyone out there on this Mettenberger kid, you are all fools. This kid is the worst thing coming, we went to the same high school, where i was his starting WR, week in and week out, the kid got worse. Just because of his height and “strength”, coaches will look at him. I am telling you that we is no better then a second string at Vandy, much less a starter at UGA, so do not ever get your hopes up about this kid

We hope Mettenberger is everything he’s hyped up to be because he is a local kid but it’s not like the position will be handed to him. He’ll still have to compete with other VERY good QB’s to win the job. Look at it this way, has UGA had anything less than a great QB under Richt? Nope. DJ Shockley was the worst and he was still good. So I’ll trust the coaches and let them do the fine work that they do!

Don’t you guys realize that CMR WAS was a QB and a damn good one at that! The only reason he didn’t start at Miami is because he backed up some guy named Jim Kelley (he’s in the NFL Hall of Fame, ya know). The best high school QB’s are taught this by their high school coaches and they want to play for a guy that gives them the best shot at the pros. Can you blame them? Still, I hope that Stafford is going to be with us for two more seasons but if we win it all in ‘08 and he leaves early to make his millions as the first overall pick, we’ll be fine. We’re just reloading suckas!!!

Matt Barkley is committed to USC and he went to the same HS as Leinart so we won’t get him. I don’t know much about these kids, but I wouldn’t mind having a QB from Pennsyvania. There’s something in the water up there when it comes to QBs. I am sure CMR and Bobo will make the right call. What QB would not want to be coached by Richt? Don’t forget about Logan Grey either.

“Your run over UGA is over so quit living in the past…”
You Dawgs are completely hilarious. Have you ever actually listened to yourselves?
Apparently, the past doesn’t matter (except 2007 or back before 1990). And “next year” is always the year you’re going to get it done (but you never do). Your last national title was back before these current recruits’ PARENTS were in school. Try to actually accomplish something that matters (like the other four SEC programs that have won NCs in modern history). Then bark yourselves silly. Otherwise, just stay the wanna-be’s that you are.

First, this pisg contest about SEC teams and fluff skeds is ridiculous. Just about *every div 1A team in the country has at least one fluff team on their sked; or four or five like OH St did last year. Now, back to the Mettenberger kid. Rivals.com and Scout.com have him high up on their watch lists, top recruit lists, etc. One says, “…big arm and lots of potential…”; “…wowed the scouts at the Army All-American Bowl combine..” I saw a couple videos and he seems to have, besides a big arm, pretty good mechanics/feet work; keeps his shoulders squared etc. 62% passer, but 10 TD’s and 9 INTs. Yes, we’re in pretty good shape at QB for the next few years with Stafford, Cox, and Grey. Hope Zack has a great senior season.

Zach sounds like you have done very well in school, if Duke, Carolina and Northwestern are interested in you. If so, I am sure you will give appropriate consideration to the 50+ years you have after your college days are done. Northwestern is an excellent school with a great young coach playing an exciting brand of football and a tight knit alumni network. So if you take the visit to Evanston, enjoy yourself and consider what you want your long-range future to be.

Gator:
Another 4 loss season with all that talent? Wasn’t FL ranked in the top 5 PRE-SEASON?
The problem is they recruit too many 5 star WR’s and not enough 5 star Defensive players.
The team is stagnant because the other players stand around and watch Tebow and Harvin who are gifted athletes, but nobody else is developed in that offense by that staff.
Granted… they scored a lot of points this year, but with that kind of talent… they should.
4 losses is an enormous failure. Consider that FL only played one team with similar talent this year, that being LSU. UGA, Michigan, Auburn, and TN had fairly close talent and they lost 3 out of 4 of those games. ALL the others, the opposition was so overmatched that it didn’t take much in the way of coaching to win.
In reality, Meyer lost 4 of the 5 games where coaching mattered… doesn’t that bother any Gator fans?

Yes Zach, listen to this guy…
Ignore the fact that the last UGA starting QB turned down Harvard to go to UGA.
There is just no future for UGA QB legends after football anywhere in the state of Georgia.
I’m sure David Green will have a difficult time seeking gainful employment after winning the SEC and a couple of years making hundreds of thousands playing in the NFL.
Also ignore the two Rhode Scholars from UGA this year. Evanston in February is like heaven on earth

Gator G:
FL has one skinny little SEC Championship game appearance this century. UGA has 3 including twice as many SEC titles.
FL had one great year after Spurrier left, but mostly 3 and 4 loss seasons finishing much lower in the polls POST season than they did PRE-season.
Individual accolades are great and Tebow deserves them, but that Heisman winner lost 4 games this year. UGA rarely loses that many games under Richt, and certainly wouldn’t with a heisman winner.
Since Tebow and Harvin are so good (and I think they are), the problem must be coaching. How do you lose to the 07 Michigan squad?

UGA offers 4 junior highschool qb’s.
This fits with the newer strategy by Richt & Co. to recruit early, by position and need. The most obvious holes that need to be filled by next yr’s class include 2 qb’s, 2 mlb’s, & 2 safetys. That will balance the depth on the roster. Everywhere else is absolutely loaded.
Sorry for posting something actually related to the original article. I’ll try to do better.
