North Cobb’s Roark commits to Kentucky

Published on: 01/23/08

North Cobb quarterback Matt Roark has decided to play college football in the SEC for Kentucky.

“I looked at Kentucky and it was a perfect fit for me offensively with what I can see myself doing,” said Roark, who committed late Tuesday. “I was looking for a place that I’ll have a shot at quarterback or receiver.

“They want me to come in and see if I like quarterback. If not, I’ll play receiver. Hopefully, I’ll play as a freshman. But it’s too early to really know.”

Ray Gover, Roark’s father, played football for Kentucky. But Roark claims he wasn’t persuaded by his dad to commit to the Wildcats.

“He totally left it up to me,” Roark said. “He told me good stuff and bad stuff about that school. He wanted me to make my own decision.”

Roark, who had previously listed the Wildcats, Duke, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Oregon and Wake Forest as his candidates, admitted Wednesday evening that the Yellow Jackets were never a front-runner.

“Georgia Tech was never leading,” he said. “I wasn’t ever too serious about going there.”

North Gwinnett recruiting update

North Gwinnett senior linebacker Eloka Anyaorah has committed to Portland State, a I-AA school coached by former Atlanta Falcons head coach Jerry Glanville.

Anyaorah had 86 tackles and 9.5 sacks in helping the Bulldogs reach the state championship game.

He became the fifth North Gwinnett senior to commit, joining defensive end Robert Pritchard (Central Florida), cornerback Marquise Quiles (Bowling Green), nose tackle Steve Buffington (Tennessee Tech) and defensive end Eric Eberhardt (Wofford).

Briefly

Marist running back/defensive back Derek Heyden has committed to Georgia Southern. His teammate, Jordan Phillips, will sign with Amherst.

Once again Tech isn’t mentioned as favorites for these in-state talents. This class stinks!! Roark- you couldn’t play for us anyways.

It’s not “this class” that stinks hoss. And Roark could have played for you last year.

It is funny that the AJC reported of all the Tech recruits who de-committed.But they have had several commits lately and the AJC hasn’t reported on them yet!!

I don’t think Roark is going to be given a serious look at qb by any team at the next level. He’ll get serious minutes holding the clipboard though.

Who cares about Roark. Good luck at Kentucky but I bet we never hear about him again. I’m happy that Coach Johnson is starting to pick up recruits. He has yet to recruit a true “star” but that likely won’t happen until Johnson demonstrates that his offense can be successful at this level so we need to be patient. Go Jackets

Where is the report that Lee Butler from Anderson, SC committed to Tech yesterday? Oh, that would be something positive about Tech, and the AJC is too afraid such news might upset their ThUGA fans (those who can read that is). May I live to see the day that the internet puts the AJC out of business. The AJC Sucks!

tim,

Nothing wrong with red-shirting your first year while you get stronger and learn the system. Nothing wrong with clipboard duty at a D-1 school like Kentucky. But I sure hope you are not trying to compare Tech’s sports to an SEC schools like Kentucky here (LOL).

I don’t know Roark, so I can’t speak for him but I saw him and Tech play twice last year. And like I said, he could have played for you guys last year.

If anyone has experienced Ga. Techs new coaches recruiting techniques, you would understand the lack of quality in-state athletes wanting to commit. Any quality athlete for that matter.

I’m just an old time Georgia Tech fan.

Lots I don’t understand, but I truly don’t understand the need for Jeff Hood to mention that Roark was apparently lying about which schools he was seriously considering. Was it a dig at the player, or a dig at the school??

It certainly didn’t add to Mr. Hood’s story…that is unless he was trying to increase the blogging aspect of his story. Many of the comments above are directed to cheer or jear GT…not about the young men who are selecting a school for their future.

Welcome to UK Mr. Roark! UK has a long history of Georgia boys excelling at UK, just take a peek at the Senior Bowl and watch LaGrange’s Wesley Woodyard to see what I’m getting at. Here’s to a great 2008!

Top-rated DB recruit Patrick Johnson calls out Urban Meyer January 19, 2008 By Mike Strom

LSU’s top-rated football recruit, cornerback Patrick Johnson of Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Fla., said he still plans to join the Tigers even though he was unable to begin school this week as expected after his ACT score was flagged by the NCAA at the request of Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer.

Johnson, the nation’s top-rated defensive back and No. 2 overall defensive prospect by Rivals.com, said he took the ACT again Thursday and is awaiting results in hope of registering for the spring semester by the deadline next Thursday.

“I’m still coming to LSU,” Johnson said Friday via telephone from his Pompano Beach home. “(ACT officials) are trying to get me out and get everything cleared up. I was good to go regardless. I just had to take it again for the writing portion.”

Johnson said he took the ACT three times before Thursday, scoring 22 in October after 16s on his first two.

Johnson said Florida had no problem with his academic eligibility when he first scored his ACT. It wasn’t until after he decided to attend LSU that Urban Meyer had one of his assistant coaches contact the NCAA. ACT officials subsequently reviewed his test results at their request and “flagged” his October score.

“I’m not upset, Urban is” Johnson said. “Florida made an issue about the ACT score. They’re cowards. He had to go behind my back when things didn’t go his way. But that’s OK. What goes around comes around. We play them this year (on Oct. 11 at Florida).”

Johnson, who committed to LSU on Jan. 5, had expected to arrive in Baton Rouge by Wednesday to begin taking classes and participate in spring practice with an eye toward earning a spot on the two-deep depth chart.

If Johnson does not meet Thursday’s registration deadline, he still can sign with LSU on Feb. 6, national signing day, in anticipation of joining the Tigers in the fall.

“Everything is going to be cleared up,” Johnson said.

If we cant get recruits untill we show them that we can win with this system, then we may be in trouble because we havent gotten any Quality recruits this year to win games to get recruits for the next recruiting year. Two more years of recruiting like this and we can forget winning records and bowl games not to mention beating UGA. Highly rated players not only want early playing time - they also want to go to a winning program.

Roark is a phenomenal athlete. He has such finely shaped and impressive muscles. I like the way he wears his tights and he has pretty eyes too. Does anybody know where I can meet him or if he is available?

I am sorry for trying to compare SEC schools like Kentucky to ACC schools like Tech. The education at most SEC schools is a joke but man, do we recruit some good looking boys mmmm hmmm I love smoking some pipe if anybody is interested ;)

I guess I’m missing something but these Tech recruits look pretty good to me. Don’t get all worked up about how many stars they have next to their names. Doesn’t mean a thing. What matters is how they perform and how they are coached when they get on campus. I could really care less if we’re not getting in-state players. Most are too stupid to handle the academic work load at Tech anyway. I’ve always felt Tech should put more focus on national recruits. Let the south Georgia phenoms who can barely spell their own names go to UGay or some other pathetic SEC school. The academics at these schools are an absolute joke. They’re nothing but football factories. One day these recruits are going to figure out they are simply being used by the factories to entertain there redneck fans on Saturday afternoons. Once their football playing days are over they go back to their little p** ant south Ga towns and wash dishes the rest of their lives!

Stop blaming the AJC for the deteriation of your sports program!

Matt Roark is a better recruit than any one of your sorry committments. GT sucks and always will. Maybe you nerds can petition for Reggie Ball to come back. Go eat your free hotdogs that came with your season tickets and shut the hell up! 8 in a row in 08.

Hey Jacket packer,

Those recruits that look pretty good to you. The ones who don’t have a lot of stars by their names. Those predominately in-state players some of which come from South Georgia towns. They are the ones who have wailed on your uppity a* for 7 straight years (by an average of TWO touchdowns each game). And 20 of them red shirted last year so ready yourself for another unpleasant Thanksgiving and blue Christmas in Boise LOL. Maybe you should keep your uppity, intelligent a* on the academic blogs and stay off the ones that are sports oriented.

terrence, you better stay away from Roark. He was my crush first. I even have a life sized poster of him in a thong next to my bed. Needless to say I have sweet dreams every night. That is how we roll in UGA nation and you better never forget it or I will make you grab your ankles.

hey fleabag t,

I’m shocked you could actually read and understand my blog. You Ugay fans really are as dumb as we think you are. Do the scores of 19-14, 14-7 and 15-12 sound familiar. Is that 2 touchdowns you ignorant a*. I understand you have nothing else going on in your pathetic life but to cheer for a bunch of drunks and thugs on Saturdays, but at least try and get some of you facts straight. It is going to be so funny when your mighty fleabags lose to CPJ and the Jackets. Might not be this yeat but its coming soon. What are you going to do then, jump off a bridge? We’re aleady much smarter and more successful than you. Soon we’ll be whippin’ your illiterate asses on the football field as well. By the way, its been 28 years since you’ve won anything of significance. You’re not even a very good football factory. At least Florida wins championships every now and then.

Jacket packer,

Read my lips you overly intelligent, uppity tech man.

Roark was good enough to play wide receiver at TECH “last” year.

Roark was not good enough to be recruited by GEORGIA “this” year.

28 years? How about Each and Every November for the last SEVEN years! 2628 days and 63,072 straight enjoyable hours to be exact! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

As far as this years recruiting goes, ask some of your intelligent back door, boise, blue turf, engineers down the hall. It means you’re A$$ is probably grass for the next 4 to 5 years TOO! I’m talking Boise Idaho blue grass hoss! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

“Significance” means different things to different people. To Georgia people it means wailing on Tech one more time, a New Years Day Bowl game, and a final #2 ranking in the NCAA with 3 first place votes. To uppity Tech people it apparently means wailing on Georgia on-line, another 6-7 win season in the ACC, and another trip to Boise or San Fransisco to play in another mid-December bowl game.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

fleabag t,

You’ve wasted so much time and energy trying to put some form of coherent thought togther that you’ve let the fries burn! So you win a few football games. Big deal. What matters is championships and there have been so very few of those around Muttville in the past 30 years! You need to go back to your trailer park and evaluate your life and priorities. I’d love to keep blogging with your ignorant a* but I have a company to run. I’ll be thinking of you when I go home to my country club mansion tonight! Gooooo Jackets and THWG!! P.S. My maid is a big Ugay fan!

How stupid can some of the yellow jacket fans be.We have won as many NC as GT and we did not have to share ours like you did. And if you will check the records, we have won 2 SEC championships in the last 5 years. How many ACC championships has GT won 0000000000000000000.Until you are on the same playing field as UGA,SHUT THE HECK UP.All I read is thug this and thug that, college students drinking is nothing new, it does not make them thugs or bad people. You can try to spin it anyway you want but UGA is a better team better program by far over GT> Always has been Always will be.

I not only have plenty of time, I have 45 years of pent up hate for overly intelligent, uppity Tech people like yourself due to two uncles, six cousins (one mouthy like you), a father in law, two brother in laws and dozens of friends and customers.

In reality YOU are the one who may have let the fries (or rings) burn. I actually do own my own business and really do have a Tech grad that cuts my grass. And I really have delayed re-doing my yard, due to the drought, in synthetic turf because I know it will cost him $1200 a year (he’s family). But if I do invest in this, I am thinking about doing it in blue, at least the back yard, as a tribute to tech’s home away from home (Boise ID).

Yeah Georgia wins a few games (about 10 per year to be accuarate). And I agree that it’s no big deal to us. But then again we don’t play in the ACC where championships may be easy to come by. We are in the SEC and NCAA Division One where they are a little hard to come by.

You need to go back to your parents county club home in Peachtree City and appoligize to their maid, hoss!

In reality YOU are the one who may have let the fries (or rings) burn. You need to stop hiding behind your fraternity’s computer screen and blaming Georgia people, the AJC, The referees, The announcers, instant replay, Tech’s AD, tech’s coaches, Techs ex players, other schools, etc., for your school’s short comings. Shut up and take losing like a man!
