Ohio State’s Tressel recruits in Georgia
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/22/08
Gainesville defensive end Keith Wells received an in-school and in-home visit from Ohio State coach Jim Tressel on Tuesday.
“It was a really, really good experience for me,” Wells said. “Over the past couple of months, Coach Tressel [and I] have grown together.
“Out of all the coaches I’ve talked to, he’s probably one of the most genuine guys I’ve met. He’s definitely a person to meet.”
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Wells, who originally committed to Florida State in August, confirmed Tuesday evening that he will choose between Ohio State and Tennessee in just over a week.
“I’m actually going to commit next week, probably Thursday or Friday,” he said. “It’ll be between Ohio State and Tennessee.
“I’ll evaluate and keep asking all the questions I can ask.”
Wells, who visited the Buckeyes in early December, enjoyed a successful trip to Knoxville last weekend.
“Tennessee has a legacy of winning, and I definitely like that,” Wells said. “They’re a solid program and I have an opportunity to play there.
“They have about three real defensive ends, and two of them are seniors. I could go in and make an impact as a freshman.
“It’s not too far away from home, but distance isn’t an issue. They have a great tradition of defensive ends coming out of that school. The visit to Tennessee was probably my best visit.”

Tech’s recruiting doesn’t begin until all the real schools pick who they want. Then Tech battles Middle Tenn for the guys that didn’t get offers. Go ahead and make that 8NAROW!!

Tech’s class is shaping up to be a great one. The new coaching staff is doing a bang-up job at not only securing our previous commits, but quickly identifying and securing new talent. In reference to the ridiculous lunatic fringe dissatisfaction with the class thus far, I’ll take Paul Johnson and Giff Smith’s opinion over any of the analysts at Scout, Rivals, or even cough the AJC.

GT’s coaching staff gets fired after a mediocre season, our playbook changed, and let’s not forget our lack of scholarships as well as being at a school that has a much smaller range of majors. Still think it’s all Giff’s fault?

ibledwhiteandgold, there was an article recently in the ajc about changes cpj was going to make in tech’s recruiting process.that is well and good, but tech has about 23 “ships”to offer and so far only 14 committs.you do the math.i think cpj is making a mistake, penalties have cost tech 20 scholarship players so far.if the tech staff doesn’t get busy and sign about 10 more guys on feb 6 they will have trouble getting up enough warm bodys to have a decent scrimage.johnson is not calling some players back because they are visiting other schools and has stopped recruiting other guys because they don’t fit his system.hey coach, how about recruiting the best athletes you can sign and adapting your system to fit them?this is not giff’s fault, the guy worked his tail off to find good players and build a relationship with them and their parents, now he is told not to return their calls.don’t be suprised if this is giff’s last year at tech!good recruiters are hard to find, giff will have no trouble finding another job, probably with a nice raise.uga just hired fsu’s director of recruiting,so they will be looking!

GT has 16 commits. They got 2 over the weekend and the AJC has acted like it did not happen. But we have 16 on Rivals and Scout.

I’m guessing that Wells will never play a single down for a major D1 school. To my knowledge UT hasn’t even offered him. A visit and a desire is not equal to an offer.

GTGreg- It’s OK to be optimistic, but you must be blind and ignorant in this case. We have lost 3-4 good commitments. We are losing all of our in-state players to other programs. We don’t have one player that is ranked in the top 30 in OUR OWN STATE. This is not shaping up to be a good class for us. I am a realist.

Recruiting is important to build depth. Recruits must know and understand that same lines coaching are telling them now, are the same lines used last year, and will be used next year on somebody else. What is the use in being a 4-star recruit, if you have to ride the bench. I guarantee Paul Johnson go very few X-star recruits at Georgia Southern and Navy. Bet he plans to get his complement of 24, then use his scheme to coach them up.
No worries…

Corey,
We we lost a top ten pro-style QB and picked up a top ten dual threat QB the next week. Last week we picked up “the fastest RB in Texas”. The guy once scored 10 touchdowns in a playoff game. Our class is ranked middle of the pack in the ACC which is usually is anyways.
This was a down year for in-state recruits academically so we had to go out-of-state. Next year’s class in-state is supposed to be strong. I’m sure we’ll put up a lot of in-state guys next year. This class loaded up on LB’s, OL, and speedy RB’s and QB’s. We will probably have a couple of commits after this weekend and a few more in the coming weeks.

GTGreg- You may want to amend your comments. A fascinating study was done by a college football blogger that correlates Rival.com recruiting class rankings to wins on the field. From 2001 - 2007 the schools that consistently pulled in Rival rated top 5 recruiting classes have been the most successful over that period of time. So in point of fact, when Rivals or Scout say your teams recruiting class ranks 25, their is a high probability a BCS Bowl birth is not going to happen.

With the recent news that Omar Hunter has comitted to the Florida Gators, the second highly recruit from Buford to shun the In-state Georgia Bulldogs, I can only think about Glenn Dorsey and his loyalty and love for LSU and his home state Louisiana and wish Mr. Hunter had the same loyalty for UGA and the state of Georgia and decided to stay home to -play College Football. It’s good to see that at least some have the dedication and loyalty to their home state. Good luck Omar we will see you in Jacksonville.

I think Keith Wells would be a great addition for tOSU. Even if they don’t win, they play in the BCS every year and Tenn still has to get past Fla & UGA. Of course, if Wells likes smoking pot and getting misdemeanors than Knoxville is the place for him.

Only time will tell. Recruiting is such an art. These morons from Scout, Rivals, and whoever else are just pandering to the masses that pay a monthly fee. The fact is Notre Dame has a top 5 recruiting class every year, and how many games did they win last year. If Paul Johnson is as gifted as we all hope he is, he will recruit talent to push GT to the next level, and I will bet you he pays NO attention to these self proclaimed experts. People, lets give this coach and team our support from the start! Win or lose I will be a YELLOW JACKET until my last breath!

I remember in the mid 1970’s, when GA Tech went through a coaching change and implemented a new philosophy that including a running attack. At that time, when it seemed like slim pickings for recruits, Tech went out and found a Tight End from Americus, GA that was not very highly rated or recruited by anyone else. Kent Hill was about 6’4” tall and weighed about 215 lbs, but ran really well and was recruited as a lineman by Tech.
When he came onto campus, Kent was put onto a weight program and began to grow, and before you knew it, he was a 6’6” 285 pound offensive lineman who could still run, and became a first round draft pick of the Rams. Kent was named an All pro the decade of the 1980’s and is now on staff at the GA Tech Athletic Association…
Give GA Tech’s coaches a chance, people. They have their own criteria, and evaluate talent in such a way that it will fit their schemes. I have faith that Coach Johnson and his staff are pulling together a good group of kids who will be able to put a competitive team on the field.

Omar was never offered an official scholarship by the University of Georgia because there were none available. Georgia only entertained the fact of signing Omar if we lost Dwayne Allen to FSU. Now, that the Dawgs have hired John Lilly from FSU, Mr. Allen is 100% red and black. Please get your facts straight.

jsc, if you think all the football players do in TN is smoke pot and get drunk then that says a lot about your intelligence. The fact is, OSU probably has as many pot smoking football players as TN does. TN is among the top colleges to have active football players on rosters in the NFL. He’ll come to TN to experience playing in front of 108,000 screaming fans, to play against the SEC (which OSU doesn’t have a good record against in the last 2 years…sorry had to say it) and to get into the NFL. That’s the fact.

GT SUX! You people are hilarious. If your not making up lies and excuses about how much harder it is academically at Tech than at UGA, then your telling stories about guys that were underrated 30 years ago and went on to have great careers in the NFL. I commend you for your optimism but the reality of the situation is UGA is as tough academically and we still kick your butts every year.

If the young man wants a higher quality education, he will go to Ohio State. Check out the relative rankings of the Big 10 and SEC on usnews.com. Of the public universities, UGA and UF are also highly ranked. If you graduate, a Big 10 degree is worth more.

P Dawg:
If UGA is so tough to get into, why is it that most of their football players major in leisure studies or radio-tv - majors that GT does NOT have.
And don’t forget your great academic coach, Jim Herrick!! (How many points for a 3-point basket?)
Face it - most of the thugs that UGA recruits could NEVER handle the academic load at GT.

BobinBuford:
First, don’t be so quick to dismiss the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications - it’s one of the best J-Schools in the South and country. Second, if most UGA recruits couldn’t cut it at Tech, then why do most of the in-state players also sport Tech offers? Finally, I can, off the top of my head, think of two guys who couldn’t cut it at Tech and yet played for four years anyway: Joe Hamilton and Reggie Ball. Only after the fact did we find out they shouldn’t have been playing, yet on the field they were…

Wow - TWO student athletes at GT that were not academically eligible. How many have UGA lost due to academics (sic) there? Also, I notice you are not defending the leisure studies program that they are in. How tough is that to get into?
And remember: the slack school for GT athletes is the business school - which is the tough school for UGA. How many of YOUR athletes could make it through the currculum like George Godsey. And always remember - Calvin Johnson had the pick of either UGA or GT. And his decision was based upon which school had better academics.
Of course, he picked GT.

Big10Fan That’s a huge and inacurate assumption to make! For example, typically a person who goes to UGA will seek job opportunities in either Atlanta or other city within the Southeast. By graduating from a school in this region the student can leverage assets acquired during their tenure. These assets include parental associations and contacts in the region, school friendships & associated contacts, fraternity relationships, summer internships and school outplacement programs. All of these localized assets will be far more valuable in this area of the country than a diploma from Ohio St.

PDAWG and people like him are the reason people hate UGA. It is not the actual who were intelligent enough to go to the school that are the problem. Their fan base is full of in-bred idiots that have never attended any college especially UGA. As a Tech grad many of my friends are UGA grads and are great people. we actually have intelligent conversations and great times togeather. we even attend the games and tailgate with each other. If the real Georgia grads could rid themselves of these idiots what a day it would be. Go home to your cousins and sisters dawg fans and good luck Georgia grads.

BobinBuford - Two GT students couldn’t hack it? Boy how the amnesia spreads! What was that scandal all about a few years back? Didn’t it have something to do with GT academic fraud and players not attending classes etc. Didn’t you guys get spanked with a reduction in athletic scholarships and weren’t you forced to forfeit former victories because of the fraud. My how time can erase the memories!!! At least our players don’t spend an entire quarter playing video games when they should be studying and then find themselves as the last minute unable to participate in a Bowl game!

That’s the problem w/ these blogs. Everyone has on opinion and it seems to confuse and muddle the message being sent in this article. The article wasn’t titled “GT’s Recruiting Class Sucks”. PJ has his own style and we have to embrace who he recruits. His wins and losses are the only thing that matters. Not why we didn’t get anyone from the state of Georgia in a year where the entire staff was gutted and a new system is installed.
