Hunter spurns UGA for The Swamp

Published on: 01/22/08

So much for Georgia’s late pursuit of Omar Hunter. The Buford defensive tackle is headed for The Swamp.

Hunter, one of the top-rated players in the country at his position, scrapped plans to visit Athens this weekend and said Tuesday he will commit to Florida.

The Gators had been the favorite to land Hunter since he de-committed from Notre Dame earlier this month. A visit to Gainesville last weekend convinced Hunter that’s where he wants to be.

“Florida is a great place,” Hunter said. “I love the coaches, the players and the recruits coming in with me. I just fell in love with Florida.”

Georgia expressed interest in Hunter in recent weeks but apparently did not have room for him. He said the Dogs could only offer him a scholarship if another recruit de-committed or was ruled academically ineligible.

There have been academic concerns about Georgia recruit DeAngelo Tyson, a defensive tackle from Statesboro. And even if running back Xavier Avery signs with the Dogs, the Cedar Grove senior might forego college to pursue a pro baseball career.

Still, Florida had a guaranteed spot for Hunter, and he didn’t want to wait on Georgia.

“I went in last weekend looking at Florida and Georgia,” Hunter said. “They were two outstanding schools, and I really loved them both. But unfortunately, Georgia didn’t have a scholarship. It was just bad timing for Georgia.”

At 6-foot-1 and 311 pounds, Hunter anchored a defense that allowed just 4.4 points per game last year. He helped Buford win the Class AA state championship and was named defensive player of the year by the AJC Gwinnett News.

Hunter was set to attend Notre Dame after committing to the school last June, but his recruitment became open question over the past two months. In December, he expressed doubts about the Irish, which finished just 3-9 in 2007. In early January, he backed out on the Irish and said he was considering Florida, Southern California and Auburn. And finally, it came down to Florida and Georgia.

The Gators wooed Buford linebacker T.J. Pridemore during a Jan. 12 visit, and did the same with Hunter last weekend. Highlights of the visit included dinner at coach Urban Meyer’s house and attending a Florida basketball game.

When asked what part of the trip swayed his decision the most, though, Hunter said, “Probably getting to hang out with [Heisman trophy winner] Tim Tebow and the other recruits and getting to know those guys. It just felt like the right place.”

Being a Dawg fan I would have liked to see you playing in Athens, but wish you the best, except when you’re playing Georgia. I still think you should take your visit to Athens to compare the two. Georgia’s defense will be one of the best in the nation next year and I think you would enjoy what the future holds for the Bulldogs. However, the final decision is where you want to spend the next 3 or 4 years. Good Luck!

I know this sounds like sour grapes because I am a dawg fan - but in viewing the AJC images of O. Hunter a few days ago he looked so fat. About 30 to 40 lbs overweight. I have never seen him play and he may be great. However many 5 star highly recruited players never pan out. Just look at my dawgs of recent. Both Kregg Lumpkin and Brandon Miller were very highly regarded yet had average at best football careers. Just because Hunter dominated class AA competition doesn’t mean he will be a star in the SEC.

Trey…Omar joins two top 5 defensive linemen from last year…Davis and Brown (good talent, just young and reshirted). The three of them will join together to create terror for the opposition linemen for the next 3 to 4 years. The Gators also have two other injured D-linemen returning next year, plus a couple other freshmen from last year who gained a lot of experience. With Will Hill (#1 free safety), Dee Finley (#1 strong safety), Janoris Jenkins (#3 cornerback), and two of the top LB’s in the country (soon to be joined by the top 3 DE/LB from Alabama, Green, the Gators are building a defense to match a powerful offense. It might not be next year for the Gators, but 2009 will be a NC year for sure. The Dawgs better be ready in Jax…cause the Gators will be!

ndrick…UF is second only to Vandy as far as grad rates in the SEC. The players average GPA this year was over 3.0 as well. Brown was redshirted so, yes, he could focus on getting good grades in his frosh classes, which he did, and after being OK by the NCAA to enter Florida. While I respect the comments of the Dawgs that would rather wish a homegrown talent luck in his career, this blog shows that a high percentage of Georgia fans have know idea what good sportsmanship is. I understand that being a homer is a big part of college football, ignorance is not, and blatant disrespect, racism; and, while funny, attacks on denim shorts are uncalled for. Especially when the most avid denim enthusiasts live in Georgia. On another note. Omar was not in any way spurning Georgia. There wasn’t a scholarship available, bottom line. Florida slow played this recruiting year for this reason, this being atleast the third top recruit that Florida has received a commit from that had previously committed to schools way in advance. Yes, this does raise a question of how can you trust a players motives when they switch so easily, but these are just kids who are not yet men. Thats why college football is so great. You get to watch boys become men by battling the best in the SEC for four years. Props UGA on your great recruiting class in addition to your returning team. UF/UGA in Jax…. Game of the Year 2008

ES…. I was talking about next year. Many crushed hopes have been built on the thought that success at the end of one season equals dominance in the next. I’m not saying that UGA is not talented, far from it. I’m just saying that to think that probably the worst Gator D in the last 8 years or so is the norm as opposed to the aboration is ridiculous. We lost basically every starter on our D last offseason. They are freshmen they will make mistakes, but they are talented. Let them get an offseason with the strength and conditioning coach. They’ll be better. Maybe not great but but better would have made the difference in at least two of our losses this season. It will be a good game as they always are between our two teams. Only this one will be between two top 5 teams.

USMC_Gayturd, BFD, so you Croc boys got a star recruit out of Georgia. What an extreme embarrassment to the SEC!! You will obviously need Omar-what’s-his-name this year as a croc needs warm weather. USMC, We lost all three starting line backers both defensive ends our best cover corner paul olver and a starting safty. And still had a real good defense. We held teams like Kentucky to 13 points.Last 4 teams to 306 yards or less.Urban should have recruited more defensive talent than all the receivers and athletes that he does.Heck didn’t he recruit like 7 receivers in one year.Defense wins and that NC was won with Zooks defensive players.Your offense ranked like 70th in the country that year.I’m not trying to be a smart butt.I really believe your defense is more than two years away thanks to URBAN the great recruiting.I can’t believe he told Zebrie Sanders you didnt have room to turn down a top lineman was stupid.I do agree with you on filling up to early because we would have got Omar and Zebrie if we would have had room. You got one quality offensive lineman in this class.

Patrick Dawg, You have TREMENDOUS talent!! No Doubt!!! Now the key is to WIN SOMETHING of IMPORTANCE. Can’t lose to South Carolina, can’t lose to Tennessee with that talent!! It must be translated into an SEC Championship and THEN a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. 1981—Ronald Wilson Reagan was in his first term, Barry Bonds was 5 years from being a rookie, Berlin Wall was still up, and ONLY 13 years from 1st moonwalk!!! That is a LONGGGGGGGG Time for a program with that much talent and tradition to go between any type of National Championship Game—Be it mythical, mystical, mirthful or any other type of M!!!

Win Something!!!!!!! Too much talent not to, and if that silly vandy running back doesn’t lay the ball on the ground in the last minute—-Wow!!!

The Little Preacher Boy From Boca Raton High School MUST DO IT THIS YEAR!!!! No excuses!!! Way too much talent, and he also has the advantage of never being distracted by ANY NFL team EVER waving money under his nose because they realize his act may play with 18-21 year old kids, but grown men would dial him out like they have so many other college punks who parley fertile recruiting areas into competitive advantages and then play a schedule with 6 guaranteed gimme wins in a 12 game slate.

Hey TampaGator, why do you blog on a UGA website on the Atlanta Journal? You’re obviously a Gator fan living in Tampa. Do they not have blogs on the Tampa newpaper website for your glorious Gators? BTW, nice job representing the SEC in your recent bowl game. Can’t believe you let a Big 10 team beat you. Lastly, you talk about how good the Gators are going to be. Maybe so, but so is UGA. You guys can have Omar. Care factor zero.

Don’t care if we didn’t have a scholly to give. To hell with Omar Hunter. I hope Moreno runs him over and leaves him bloody and wounded in the dirt. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Damn a Georgia kid that would want to play for the pathetic turds.

Right on, Joey Joe Joe. Hat’s off to an SEC team that let the mighty, big 10 team whip their butts in a bowl game. We wouldn’t see UGA losing to such a bottom-dwelling conference. Go BullDawgs in 2008 and kick some major butt!!!!!

USMC Gator.

First of all SEMPER FI, Devil Dog. I appreciate your respectful comments and I will attempt to respond in kind.

I wish Mr. Hunter all the best. I actually hope your recruiting class lives up to it’s billing. To me, the bottom line is that your school had a scholarship available for him. Mine did not. This is not a bad thing to me.

I have such high hopes and this bodes well for my “puppies”. If UGA is turning down or telling recruits “if we have a scholarship available” then this MUST indicate that we are getting all the players we need.

I hope this young man enjoys and gets the benefits out of his career in the swamp. I will hope he does well against every other team EXCEPT FOR ONE (THE SEC will continue to prove it’s DOMINANCE).

I support my team. We had no room for him. Your team did. Good Luck. I hope this young man does not end up as a bad trivia answer. He needs to take advantage of the opportunities that just opened for him.

To all your posters-this is RECRUITING! We go thru this every year. Life goes on. Get one and join the train.

KingGator sez, “let the good times roll”!!

Just like the dawgs winning once in every 10 games or so, this was just the normal tease up until the hammer came down, and Hunter made his final decision. Not a hard decision I would imagine when you consider hanging out with the Heisman winner, or hanging with a guy like Mark Richt, who has never even won a NC!!

Go Gators!!

Do you guys realize the head coach that you idolize is a VERY!!!!! Self Proclaimed Born Again Christian, and I wonder how he would respond upon reading your very Christian sentiments in this Blog. Do you believe that Mark Richt would think his example has carried over in convincing people to lead the type of life that Jesus led over 2,000 years ago??

I wonder how Mark feels early in the morning or right before falling asleep that the type life he epitomizes and lives as an example is doing not a thing to help many Georgia fans “To Get It”. Why don’t all you guys—Most of whom I assume get dressed to go to church on Sunday—send copies of your profane comments to the guy who adopts kids and is very active in his community as regards charitable activities, and ask him to tell you how “proud” he is of the exemplary behavior of all you Dogs. Think he will be impressed?? Think his Maker is impressed??? Real Nice!!!

The title of this blog could not have been more misleading - Mr. Hunter did not receive an offer, so he did not “spurn” UGA.

It’s unfortunate, because by all reports and his own conduct he seems like a fine young man. Best of luck to him.

Man … I cant believe all the talk about 1 player. Ga please get a clue. you lost to Tenn.& SC. last year and really got away with one in Vandy. And by the way the fumble was not with 2.47 left in the game. My friend just replayed it and there was 1.09 left. Any the fumble happened and that is what it takes in the SEC to have a great year. W e all know that. But the comments about one player that he is trash and he is fat and cant play is a joke. It takes alot more than 1 player to win in the SEC we all know that. The game next year is going to a good one no question but I must say Ga schedule is going to one that the gators had in 2006. If Ga goes 10-2 that would be great for them. No question the schedule is tuff along with being in the SEC.But for guys to make statements liek this about a kid that is 18 is really sad. I hope both teams are 8-0 when they meet in JAx. This will be one of the biggest games ever played in the SEC. May the best team win

By Ga./Fl. Guy

January 23, 2008 11:11 AM | Link to this

Also… Fo rthe dawgs fans. Thank god you have a coach with some class. After the win in vandy did you ever think you would be jumping up and down on A teams logo after the game ( VANDY LMAO)I know these were the number 67 -69 players on the team but please It’s Vandy. Also you had zero time outs left in the game as well. Yes Fl. dodged a lot of bullets as well in 2006 Blocked field goals ETC. But we all know it takes this to make it in the SEC. Please relax enjoy the year you had I know it’s been a long time since this type of year but try to act with a littel class. It”s easy just win a NC more than 1 every 27 years and u will see. I jsut hope the SEC wins it again next year if Not the Gators than anybody else is OK with me.

Meyer pulls his scholarship away from Z Man after having assured him it would be there for him.

Meyer takes a great athlete in Tebow and uses him 20 times a game on Drive Zero plays - result, Tebow ends the season injured.

Meyer could care less about his players - they are expendable assets who exist only to win for HIM. Congratulations Gator Fans - you have a head coach who is almost as classless as Spurrier.

The Dawgs are 1 - 1 against the National Champion and Defending National Champion Gators. Not Bad. We beat you by 12 points - wasn’t even close. Next season it’ll be 20.

Dear Burt, Now that was funny!! How about a list of all those who have died since Georgia won anything of substance. I’ll start—-

(1) Ronald Reagan (2) Gerald Ford

This is nuts!!! Do you realize how many statesmen, politicians, actors, actresses, novelists, sportsmen, scientists, economists, educators and SOOOOO Many famous people have expired since that MORON,Munson, Got to squeal like Ned Beatty—“Run!! Lindsey Run”“”—over a quarter of a century ago?????

Man I don’t know. I hate to see any highly rated home grown talent go elsewhere. I’m stumped that UGA didn’t have a scholarship for him or at least keep one in their back pocket for situations like this. We definitely need to sign Lipscomb. We can never have too many DB’s…We need to do a little better (closing deals)with the in-state recruiting. I’d like to wish Omar luck, but I can only allow myself to say. Stay healthy.

CapeCodDawg, (Man, you’re a long way from The Hedges - how’d you end up there!?) Many of these kids need scholarships and (I guess) The Dawgs are fresh out. I’m guessing there is one left but only time will tell. Signing day is just around the corner. The Dawgs are loaded for bear and full of confidence. They have more confidence now than the 1980 team had. I’m a ‘79 alum and have followed The Dawgs every year. I’m here to tell you that they are scratching at the door to get next season started already. No one intimidates them. In spite of their tough schedule I think they have a real shot of going undefeated.
