Avery visits Georgia
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/20/08
A professional baseball career continues to be a distinct possibility for Georgia-bound running back Xavier Avery of Cedar Grove.
Avery’s official visit to Georgia this weekend was cut short after he departed Athens late Saturday to be in Suwanee on Sunday for an invitation-only event at Chipper Jones’ 10th Inning Baseball Academy.
“Xavier had a good visit,” Avery’s father, Theophilus Griffin Jr. said Sunday evening. “We went to Athens on Friday and I dropped him off at [Georgia coach] Mark Richt’s house. They were having a meeting [with the recruits visiting Georgia].
“Then they went to the Arkansas basketball game on Saturday.”
Pro baseball aside, Avery may not be a lock to sign with Georgia on Feb. 6. Schools such as Oklahoma and Stanford continue to court Avery.
“[Oklahoma coach] Bob Stoops was at Xavier’s school on Friday to see his teammate, Josh Jarboe [who has committed to the Sooners],” Griffin said. “Stoops was putting some pressure on [Xavier] on Friday.
“And Stanford has indicated he could start much quicker for them because they don’t have much speed in the secondary.”
But Avery, who is scheduled to play football and baseball at Georgia if he signs with the Dogs next month, may have put on a set of shoulder pads and football helmet for the final time.
Griffin hinted that his son will be a lock to turn pro if he is a first or early second-round pick in June’s major league baseball draft.
“And I kind of get the feeling that baseball is going to draft him high,” Griffin said. “Scouts from the Phillies, Padres, Pirates, Dodgers, Yankees and Royals have all come to our house.”

Xavier Avery - go to Stanford. That degree and school will open doors for you later in life just in case football or baseball don’t work out. Good Luck.

Don’t have a dog in this fight, but seems like GT won a national championship more recently than UGA. So has LSU. And Florida. And Alabama. And Tennessee. UGA seems to have a bark much worse than their bite. But I guess that’s what message boards are for.

Why does every off season include some type of embarrassing incident(s) involving UGA players? Get drunk and can’t drive home? Call us and we’ll come pick you up, no questions asked. The only problem is “we” don’t exist, yet. Dawgs against drunk driving ain’t just about the athletes. Any current student would be eligible for assistance. GO DAWGS!

What happens to the scholarship belonging to X Avery, if he signs with UGA but plays MLB? Will CMR allow an unused spot to be squandered by an athlete that only plays pro baseball, when there is an abundance of talent that would love to wear the red and black? Do you (you being UGA Athletics Department) deprieve yourself of someone else who could help you win, in favor of a kid who may or may not actually use the scholarship he is handed?! Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but this issue has me perplexed. 11-2 ain’t bad!

UGA still has a not-so-great academic institution, 2 less championships than tech, and an always bad basketball team. So these comments regarding UGA being superior to Tech always don’t exactly make sense.
I didn’t know we play the game to come in second, so congratulations on that. The only thing UGA is definitely superior in is fan support…I hope you are all proud of that amazing feat.

Once again, folks like old “Jack” are trotting out the old academics argument. It’d be great if it were actually backed up by data (something I would hope a Tech fan would understand).
The 2007 freshman class at Georgia averaged 1242 on the SAT and had a high school GPA of 3.83.
The 2007 freshman class at Georgia Tech averaged 1320 on the SAT and had a high school GPA of 3.78.
The academic differences between the student body are not all that striking. When you throw in the fact that the Georgia freshman class is roughly twice the size of Tech’s, a painful truth becomes evident: MORE ACADEMICALLY SUPERIOR STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED AT GEORGIA THAN AT TECH.
By almost any objective parameter—Rhodes scholarship numbers, the numbers of National Merit Scholars enrolled, whatever—Georgia has a margin over Tech that is commensurate with the above data. The University of Georgia turns out the majority of the students who go on to be the doctors, lawyers, businessmen, veterinarians and teachers in this state. The comparative numbers between the two institutions aren’t even close.
And with regard to the football argument, I don’t think that Tech has any leg to stand on on that arena. The Jackets have lost seven in a row, 13 of the last 16, and have one split national title in the modern era (1990). Georgia has a commanding edge in head-to-head competition between the two schools, and that difference is even more exaggerated since the beginning of the Vince Dooley era (in 1964). Since that time, Georgia has beaten Tech over 75% of the time. The Dawgs have one consensus national title in the modern era (1980). I’d say that the edge clearly belongs to Georgia in this category. Two of Tech’s national titles came in 1917 and 1928. If you want to include national titles from before eighty years ago, then why not classify Harvard or Princeton or Fordham or Yale as the consensus national football power ? After all, those schools have more national titles than either Georgia or Georgia Tech. The reason is that “titles” acquired during the Triassic era don’t have any relevance to modern-day football. Moreover, Georgia has two consensus national titles; Georgia was recognized by lesser polls as national champion two more times, but does not count those. Tech counts any and all recognition as national champion as a “title” (in 1952, for example, five polls recognized Michigan State as champion, but one recognized Tech. Tech counts that as a “national title’).
Finally, with regard to basketball—uh, i don’t think I’d talk too much about that. Tech lost to Georgia this year, so if Georgia’s basketball team sucks, Tech’s sucks worse.
Georgia has won 30 national championships in eight different non-football NCAA sporting events. Tech has won one—in women’s tennis, last year. Georgia has won 125 SEC titles in 15 different sports. Tech isn’t even in double digits in overall ACC titles. There is no question about who has the better athletic program. Case closed there, too.
Jack needs to do his homework before he posts. To quote Ben Franklin, “Better to stay silent and be thought an idiot than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.”

Sounds like this Avery kid is pretty smart if he is considering some other schools other than UGA. UGA is loaded at RB and platoon running backs in college usually don’t get the same money in NFL due to lack of stats in college. Of course only 2% of college athletes get a paycheck in NFL (quote from Adams -Pres of UGA and NCAA)anyway. Go to a college that has real students, not just a bunch of JOCK majors that are worthless to you the rest of your life. UGA has ROAD scholars, on the ROAD to Atlanta Hot spots to party. Don’t waste a chance at a real degree, Go to a real school.

Rhodes Scholar, Rhodes Schmaller. There are exceptions to every rule. It’s all about curriculum. Check it out.
And let’s talk about the average SAT score. Let’s talk about the median SAT score. Do you folks know what median means?
As for Tech’s troubles, the Institute changed from the quarter system to the semester system and mistakes were made. We were even penalized by the NCAA excessively for penalizing ourselves first. Case closed.
As for Rueben Houston, Tech tried to keep him out of school. A judge allowed him back in. If we don’t play him, then the judge comes back into play.
And with all the thugs at Muttland, things like this are exception rather than the rule at Tech.
You people never cease to amaze me.

If anyone is interested, GA Tech got two more commitments over this past weekend…offensive lineman Phil Smith out of Tampa (6’6” 280 lbs and runs a 4.9 40) and dual threat QB Tevin Washington out of Alabama (6’ 1” 205 lbs and runs a 4.6 40).

Wow, its hard to believe how many idiots post on these blogs. Some kids were caught drinking (95% or more college kids drink they just don’t get caught like these two did). The difference between that happening here and other SEC schools is we actually live in a MEDIA MARKET so the whole world gets to hear about it. Call the kids at UGA thugs if you wish. Say what you will. The only people who can talk trash respectively to us come from UT and USC (East). GT? I am not sure why any self respecting Dawg would even bother to respond to a tech fan. Seriously, they are not in the same league as Vandy much less UGA.
The next two years should be interesting with Staff/Moreno/King/Green leading the O. If we keep recruiting like this we could end up doing what UF has done the last 15 years and LSU the last 6.
Finally to the guy crapping on not having a NC with 5 straight top 5 recruiting classes. General consensus is that it takes 5-7 years to build a program from the shape it was in after Goff/Donnan so what we are seeing is that taking place right now. We would have easily destroyed USC (east) with the way our team was at the end and UT would have had its hands full at least. It’s Great to be a Georgia Bulldawg!

Some of these folks must be 13 year olds… Avery should play college baseball, unless he can score some big money. Hard to say what he might get, but it’ll be hard to pass up a decent signing bonus. What about Uzzi. Is he coming to Tech?

Tech is an above average academic school. They are always in the top ten academically nationally. That is what College is about. UGA is not. All college sports are for entertainment. If you judge a college by it’s sports, then you should judge a pro football team by the education that it provides. Most of the time when a kid chooses a college based only on sports, the kid is the one that loses. Go for the education first, then have fun playing sports, no matter what school you go to.

From a dog to a Techie. You were screwed in 1990. I remember both games. That was the last GT team that was really just amazing. I don’t consider Colorado a NC from that year at all.
I’ll admit I cheer for the Jackets every week until we play. Why? Am I a traitor? Nope, I just know that if the Jackets are 10-1 or 9-2 that our Strength of schedule is higher and its always much more fun to beat a good team as apposed to a bad one.
GTforthemoney your right to a certain extent but what you fail to mention is that while GT has slipped in the last few years from a A/A+ to a A- ranked school in academics UGA has gone from a C-/C ranked school to a B/B+ ranked school. The gap is closing big guy. The problem is money. UGA has a TON of it and GT doesn’t. The gap will likely close more in the years to come though I doubt UGA will ever surpass Tech nor would I wish them to. I would be scared for the buildings I build if UGA surpassed Tech in academics.
Beyond the fact that the degrees at GT and UGA are different while most Techies would love to live in the 70’s and 80’s when you went to UGA to get your Agriculture degree I believe those highly educated individuals from GT know better than that now and if they don’t then I guess there really is a reason why the Gap has closed so much.
Info from several sites including www.collegeprowler.com
BTW GT is ranked 35 to UGA’s 59 on USAToday for those of you who down college prowler. Also check out the Princeton Review and the info is much the same.

One thing to drink and go to your sports studies class the next day…another thing to actually stay out all night and go to a real Institution of Higher Learning and have to work for your degree. There is survey being taken by the AJC, do you think UGA will have more football players arrested in the off season than the two that have already been arrested! That’s funny!! I think they ought to offer a prize for the person that can guess how many of UGA’s wonderful Football Heros will be arrrested durning this off season. Mark really gets kids with good moral character to play for him at Georgia! Oh, well he did learn that under the best Bobby at good ole FSU and played at the U (Miami)!! Seriously it is an embarrasment to say our State University recurits these thugs.
And about the UGA beating TECH 7 years in a row, somethimes teams just have your number, like Florida has Georgia. Since Florida has won 14 out of the last 17 games. I call that total domination!! UGA usually has the better team, but even when Tech does it loses to them. When Georgia has the better team than Florida, Florida ususally wins!
About Recruiting, Tech doesn’t even recruit players that don’t met the minimum requirements. Example Caleb King. They would have loved to have him, but didn’t even recruit him because he just wouldn’t have been able to make it. And that is just one example.
About the general student population at Tech, there is no comparison between them and UGA’s Students. Tech is always ranked higher and attracts better students. If you don’t believe it just have your kids apply there compared to UGA. They might have problems getting into UGA because of the interest, their GPA and Test Scores will keep them out of Tech. I am not a Tech Graduate, I attended Georgia State University. And by the way I was excepted to Georgia, but couldn’t get into TECH. My Grades and GPA wasn’t good enough.

Okay, lets try this again. Every conference thas their thug programs. In the ACC it is FSU, Miami, and VaTech. In the SEC it is UGA and Florida. In the Big 12 it is OU and K-State. They depend upon Jucos, easy majors, and professional players, not student athletes. They are there to get a football promotion to the NFL, not a degree. And economics are simple: It is worth it IF you are a fourth round pick or better. Otherwise, see you at the loading docks. If a player graduates from any school, they will be better off in the long run than those who don’t. But a major in family relations, general studies, etc. - see you at the loading docks. And the recruiting of football players has gotten ridiculous. No wonder these people end up in trouble. We treat them like spoiled rock stars.

TO BYSTANDER: You are correct that we have not won a NC since 1980, but it is coming this year and possibly next. We are the only SEC team to be rated in the top 10 at the end of the season for the last 7 seasons in a row. Anyone who knows college football and is willing to be honest knows we deserved to play for the NC in 2007. Not sure who your team is but you do sound a bit jealous.

I really have a hard time understanding why any adult would find it necessary to go on a message board and insult somebody else. College sports are fun, and if they make you this angry maybe you should find a different hobby. Anybody that feels a need to make themselves feel better, by belittling others has their own problems and should be pitied not engaged.
If you feel you are better than someone else based on the college you or they went to or team you or they support, good luck in life. Every university, college and technical institute in this country can provide a good education if you want it and pursue it. If I want to be a Doctor, UGA is a very good school to attend. If I want to be an Engineer, GT would be a very good school to attend. If a kid goes to any school and chooses to party and not apply himself he will flunk out have to find another way to make his way in life. Most every kid that goes to college will drink underage at sometime. It’s a shame but it is a part of growing up. If you tell me GT, UF or any other school hasn’t had underage drinking you are just fooling yourself. As for DUI’s, I hate them. Anybody who Drinks and Drives should be punished to the full extent of the law and I have no sympathy for them. However, if they learn their lesson and truely change their behavior, they should receive a second chance. If anyone believes things like that don’t happen at every school you again are deceiving yourself.
Where I see a disconnect from people is what defines Thug like behavior. To me, the drinking issues do not constitute thug behavior. Drinking whether you like it or not is a big part of American culture and is unfortunantly seen as part of being an adult. College is a time when students are trasitioning from being kids to adulthood, and is the time where they have the freedom to test their limits. Which is what the majority of college students do
Any violance, stealing, drug use or drug dealing could and should be seen as thug behavior. With a team of over 100 players invariably every school will have a problem with some sort of thug behavior. The key is how it is handled from the top down. As far as UGA is concerned, I have no problem with the way Mark Richt has handled any problem that as come along. Anyone who doesn’t think he has handled problems please explain in specifics.

I wonder why Hunter does not commit to either the Gators or the Bulldogs and get the suspense over with for a change. I guess he just wants to be able to go out to California (USC visit at the end of the month and after his Athens visit next week)to enjoy the girls and free food and fun out there. I would suspect that he will have secretly committed to either Florida or Georgia by the end of next weekend. If Notre Dame is too far away, how does USC fit into his picture? This kid needs to stop pulling the strings of Georgia and Florida and make a decision after his Georgia visit. He has a great opportunity to go to Gainesville and be a starter, or at least in the DL rotation, next year. He would most likely redshirt at Georgia. The Gators have a lot more need on the defensive side of the ball than Georgia does. Makes sense that he will be a Gator, but you never know with certain kids these days. Anyway, Florida is having a great push at the end, with or without Hunter. They have really helped themselves on the defensive side of the ball for sure.

Tech fans always talk about how UF has dominated UGA in their series for the past 17 years.
Tech fans never mention that FSU has beat Tech every year they have played since FSU joined the ACC in 1991. That was 16 years ago.
Also, UGA has beat Tech in 13 out of the last 16 seasons.

The signals have been getting stronger for well over a month now. Since before he officially de-committed from Notre Dame, it has been clear that Florida was going to be the team to beat for the services of five-star defensive tackle Omar Hunter. richmond dawg, some of the difference is merely a difference of opinion in their respective scouts.just as you and i would probably disagree on the relative merits of players.for example, who was the better college rb,herschel walker or bo jackson, who is the all time best pro qb,joe montana or tom brady, and where do moreno and bradshaw fit in?ask five different football”experts”and you will probably get five different answers.also, scout discounts the value of jc transfers, rivals does not, rivals counts hebron as a new committ, scout doesn’t since he signed a loi last year.if you think about it this is another reason for at least an eight team playoff in div 1,experts cannot even agree on judging new talent, how can we expect polls to decide who plays for a bcs championship?btw,i think that the scouting services always overate notre dame’s recruits, just as their team is usually overated.how else can you explain several top recruiting classes and a team that cannot even beat the service academys.
