UGA No. 3 in Rivals’ list; Top recruits on display
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/16/08
No. 3 on the field, No. 3 off it.
That’s the latest on Georgia, which occupies the same position in Rivals.com’s new recruiting rankings as it did in the final USA Today coaches poll.
The Bulldogs, who’d reached as high as No. 2 in Rivals’ rankings, now trail No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Alabama with less than three weeks to go until national signing day.
Any chance UGA makes a late push for the No. 1 spot? Yes, says Rivals editor in chief Bobby Burton. But it’s a long shot.
“[Buford lineman] Omar Hunter is about the only the player that could really move them up,” Burton told ajc.com’s recruiting blog. “I think you’re talking about a possible top-five finish and definite top 10.”
Mark Richt & Co. have already secured 25 commitments. UGA’s class includes:
— Two five-star recruits: Summerville (S.C.) High wide receiver A.J. Green, the No. 9 overall player in Rivals’ new individual rankings, and Cartersville Cass running back/linebacker Richard Samuel, who’s No. 24 overall.
— Fourteen four-star recruits.
— Eight three-star recruits.
Notre Dame leads the way with three five-star players. The Irish had four before Hunter (No. 17 overall) backed out of his commitment to Charlie Weis.
Georgia Tech is 47th in Rivals’ rankings.
The top 50:
1.Notre Dame

I love how the AJC loves to stick it to the Dawgs about “woeful” their recruiting is when they can find even the slightest chink in the armor. While at the same time pointing out how arbitrary the recruiting rankings are when the Dawgs are doing really well in recruiting.
Which is it? Recruiting is almost meaningless at this point or recruiting is a definite indication of how a program is fairing.
Either way, Dawgs are doing well on the field and off the field. The real question is, which program is an elite SEC program now and which program is a wanna be with a flighty head coach who may bolt for greener pastures at any moment.

Just me, lets try reading comprehension once again. I’ll even post the quote for you. “That’s the latest on Georgia, which occupies the same position in Rivals.com’s new recruiting rankings as it did in the final Associated Press Top 25.” And its incorrect. UGA was #2 in the final AP rankings.

Doesn’t really matter where we are ranked in the recruiting trail.. Ask again in 2 year..
If we keep the commitments we currently have (5 are already in school, BTW!!) and add Mr. Omar Hunter, all will be well!!

Just Me needs to learn to read and pay attention. First sentence says it all moron! Do you think he was talking about the recruits being no.3 on the field. Recruiting rankings are for the birds anyways, because the only thing that matters is how well you coach up the kids you get. Coach Richt and staff do a great job of that and they will get it done in the next two years!
Go Dawgs and a** is 2008!

He knows that the USA TODAY COACHES POLL and the AP poll are two different polls. I suppose if the Athens Times had ranked yall number 1, you would all forget about the AP also.

Dawg fans… I hate to tell you all but my really good insiders tell me Omar is going to be a Gator Print it…He feels UGA didn’t search him out and didn’t even try to talk with him even after his comminment to ND. That was a coaching mistake and he really has no heart for the dawgs. I just heard also his good friend Pridmore is going to Fl. as well.

First, what the @#$% is all this spooning crap about and secondly, why are you guys arguing over one spot in a poll that is history when we should be licking our chops at what lies just ahead. The dawgs are about to feast on the rest of the SEC and it’s about time! As soon as we handle the SEC, the rest will be cake because anyone who keeps up with college football knows that the SEC is by far the best conference. By the way, why all this love for Florida? When UGA kicks off in LSU and UF’s a$$ back to back this year, everyone will see who the real deal is!

Tony,
The only thing Georgia is behind ‘Bama in, is number of trailer parks and number of self-worshiping coaches.
JustMe- You are a pitiful Tech fan! The only satisfaction you get out of football anymore is trying to show your superiority over Georgia fans. Too bad it makes you look even more stupid. It’s really killing you techies seeing the DAWGS doing everything that TECH can’t (except harboring terrorists)

The dawgs already have so many superstar recruits, they may have to start turning them away. Richt is probably the top recruiter in the country and UGA will be loaded with talent for years. I look for total domination nationally in the next few years, with multiple national titles. The talent in the program right now is simply amazing—-no one else comes close in the U.S., even USC, which UGA will beat easily next year in the Orange Bowl for the national title.

I love it how UGA fans think they have such a rich tradition. They are on a good run right now yes. But thinking that UGA football has tradition is like saying Scientology is a religion that everyone should believe. Congrats on having your moment in the sun. I’m sure we will still hear about Saint Herschel Walker in another 30 years. I mean come on it took one of the greatest players to ever play to get you a title. Bama has had FOUR coaches that have done more than what UGA has ever done.
Good luck Dawg fans but comeon you are going to get beat by Florida for what the 15th time in 19 year later on the year. I mean the only reason you beat Tebow is because he couldn’t run the ball and the dawgs exploited it.
By BLACKEDOUT

Roll Tide… I see there are a few people here that understand what college football is all about. Can you get the feeling that the dawg fans are so bitter that they had 1 Good season and yes they had a very good season but lets be real. 1980 was the last time they even saw a NTG. Also your comment on Tebow being hurt in the Fl /Ga game. That is football and you need to play throught this as a team. They will understand more next year after they play LSU on the road and that game will be hard hitting and then turn around with no off week and play Florida. Believe me if they can run the table or even get to 9-2 that will be a good year for the leghumpers.

GA fans suck. Your team beat Hawaii, who should have lost to San Jose State, a UF team with their QB’s arm in a sling and an Auburn team who’s offense resembled my high school JV team, and now you think that UGA is God’s gift to football. Nice game against UT this year, also. Even Bama whipped the queers. In the meantime, watch out for Spurrier! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

BLACKEDOUT….WOW….you have some serious bitterness or hatred against BAMA and I am not quite sure why? It is not like UA ever has been or ever will be a big rivalry. We play you guys what, every 5-6 years or however the systems now works.
As for recruiting rankings…who cares. Is there that much of a difference between the #1 and #5 classes anyway? Both teams are having a great year in recruiting as I dont see it changing for either team in the near future as both schools have coaches who are great recruiters. Someone posts this meaningless stuff in a blog and it turns into a flame fest between 2 teams who rarely play each other. Give me a break!

Dawgs suck - “your team beat Hawaii who should have lost…a UF team with their QB’s arm in a sling” and blah, blah, blah. You are patheitc. USC lost to Stanford. LSU lost to Kentucky and Arky. Ohio St lost to any SEC team they play. Oh, and I didn’t know Tebows arm in a sling would prevent them from giving up 42 points on defense. Think before you go vomiting off at the mouth again. Who do you cheer for? Yeah, I wouldn’t post that either! What a loser.

Is that still UGA Nation whining I hear???
The fact that our legislature is looking at football playoff legislation just shows you how low rent whiners UGA fans, players, coaches, hack writers & every one else connected is…
Programs with a storied history in college football like Notre Dame, USC, Alabama & Penn St never whine or complain about them getting left out of a bowl or whatever. Only programs who have barley made a skidmark on the underpants of college football history like GEORGIA do low rent things like that…

Just asking fellow bloggers as I have never seen Omar Hunter play…. Is he really a so called 5 star cann’t miss SE conf. star??? I just viewed the AJC photo journal and he looks so fat. Not quite William Perry but about 40 lbs overweight. This would mean that his fighting weight would be about 280 and he is only about 6 ft. Small by SEC standards. Is he rated so high because he dominated class AA competition ???
Not trying to slam the kid or start a p** contest with his fans - - just asking ???? What is his talent ??

UGA is always at the top in recruiting. If enough qualify for college and/or get out of jail in time to enroll, this should be a great class. Top 2 finish, 3rd ranked class, we should all be so lucky. UGA has a darn good, well-stocked young team, you are recruiting for depth and you still have a top-5 team. Us Alabama fans can only hope we can get back to that point in the future. Rivals likes to stick it to anyone they can get anyways. They will upgrade players that havent committed, and leave alone obviously better players, who have already chosen a school. you want to make money, start a recruit ranking website.

Lets take a look at he past and do we see a NC? 2004 was 6th in recruiting. 2005 was 4th in recruiting. 2006 was 4th in recruiting. Do they have a NC. NOPE maybe its the coaching. UGA can get all 5 stars players they can find and they still will not win a NC. Need a real coach first!!!

We Bama fans need to get off our high horse. UGA as a program is where we want to be right now. Outside of UA of course, UGA is my favorite team in the SEC. We have had many trials and tribulations since Stallings left. We have no reason to gloat or brag or anything. It will be a long climb back to being a perennial power. Here’s hoping that we can get back to respectable in a short amount of time. Recruiting is the life blood of college football, as Richt and Saban know. I hopefully look forward to many meetings in the SEC Championship game.

Sure is a lot of ranting going on here about whether #1 is so much better than #3, etc. Not much difference really from 1-5, or for that matter, 1-10. Same with season rankings: the #10 team in the country could beat the #1 team on any given Saturday. This past year’s rankings were a prime example, eg S.Fla, Rutgers, Louisville, UConn, etc all being in the top five at one time or another; crazy. And I didn’t think that Jeff A. nor Jeff H. were painting any kind of negative picture of UGA; just stating where the Dawgs are ranked by ONE recruiting ‘service’. It’s a crap shoot anyhow; who will actually qualify, who will actually play, how will they actually play at the college level, etc. Kinda like NFL draft picks: T.Brady drafted at 199, but look at the last 10 Heisman winners. What’s really surprising is: Fulmer not doing any better; Saban doing well even tho he’s about as dependable as B. Petrino. Go figure.

Jeff… I see you really keep up the recruiting going on. LMAO Dummy!!! Pridemore has already commited to Florida. Omar will commit this weekend and if the gators close real hard on JJ from AL. then we will have the #2-3 class. But wait I see HW is trying to get back to UGA for his senior season. It’s been a long time since 1980 and it’s killing you isn’t it. You should have a very good team next year but I have to admit the schedule is going to be tuff like it was for us in 2006 Tuffest schedule in the country and win the NC. Please make an attempt to do the same if you can.
When you win 3 yes 3 National champinships in a row please let all of us Know. In case you forgot 2 in BB and 1 in Football oh by the way that is 3 in 18 months.. When the leghumpers get to that level let me know..
Also Omar is a gator this weekend. Take your trailer savings and bet on it.

country boy… Don’t ever judge a book by the cover. Omar runs 4.9 and has very quick feet and is strong as an ox. Yes he played in a AA HS level but he also just finished up with the all star game in Orlando and every coach out there ( NFL Scouts ) said he could play at the next level already. He’s a beast in the middle and makes offences go to other plays because of him. Also William Perry was a pretty good player at the DT position. It’s the hardest position to recruit for IMO. He will be a great player whereever he ends up. But I’m betting on the Gators really hard OK I will let it out…His Dorm room is already set up to room with Pridmore… GO GATORS…

Only The Atlanta paper would put in GIANT letters that UGA DROPS in recruiting ratings - went from 2nd to 3rd in “opinion” poll…. where is Tech “rated”? These are opinions mostly by people who are paid to make things interesting … they listed two time All-American defensive end David Pollack (1st round draft choice)as a low 3 star fullback and didn’t even rate Thomas Davis (All-American and 1st round draft choice) .. it is a guessing game. Some 5 stars never even make the team much less start. Mark Richt is good at judging “talent” not stars - that is one reason the DAWGS were #2 this year in the FINAL POLL!

Actually if youre in their so called top 20 it’s about as good as #1. The NFL Draft seems to loose out on these #4 and #5 star players as they fizzle. Look at notre dame and see where their #1 classes got them. It’s all on the coaches filling their neeeds with players who are good at their postion and those who can get better in the positions as they get in collge. BS on who rivals, scouts and whoever thinks are the top classes. You can’t get inside a kids head and in California those kids seem to have too many I’s and not enough Team in them.
Don’t cry Georgia.

Glad to see the dawgs and bama are doing great in recruiting this year! My dad was a dawgs fan and liked to tease me about beating the crimson tide after BEAR BRYANT died! Hope both teams finish up 2 or 3 this year and Julio Jones will become a crimson tider on Feb. 6th. ROLL TIDE!!

Ga fools, you really are a fool, a Gayturd fan living in Ga fool. Go back to your swamp where you belong. You are such a jealous one of the mighty Bulldogs that you cannot stand it. Pridmore was used as bait to get Hunter to sign and you know it.

Georgia has put together thre years of top 10 recruiting classes. Besides FLA we have the most talented crop of kids in the south. Mark Richt has proven year after year that he and his staff can coach kids up. Name one player under Richt that has regressed. WE have the talent and depth to go all the way in 08. Mark my words, Caleb King, Iseral Troup, and Currain will help establish the 2008 Bulldogs as “the” team to beat. Question; name any coach that you would chose over Mark Richt……..The list is maybe three…… maybe. Go Dawgs!!!!!

Last time I checked, football was a team sport. Regardless of where UGA ranks overall in rivals.com, if they are filling in the gaps for the next 4 years it will have been an effective year in recruiting. And you can bet, nobody will look forward to facing the dawgs.

I agree about the jealousy thing…UGA fans and players know how to have fun and how to enjoy winning. Mark Richt knows when to let the players have fun and when to tighten the screws. Our coach doesn’t lie or cheat and take cheap shots or try and make his players look better than they really are by keeping them in the game to pad their stats against weak teams; check Tebow’s stats against UGA, LSU, AU and Michigan- not too impressive and definitely not Heisman worthy…Go Dawgs!

GEORGIA has 3 Five Star Recruits. You forgot Deangelo Tyson, the No.1 or 2 rated defensive tackle.
