Florida rejects commitment from Sanders
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/12/08
Zebrie Sanders’ plan to choose between Florida and Georgia this weekend has hit an unexpected snag.
The 6-foot-6, 270-pound offensive tackle from Northmont High in Clayton, Oh. was set to commit to the Gators on Sunday.
But the lack of scholarships available in Gainesville for offensive linemen has Sanders looking elsewhere for a place to play college football.
“The school that Zebrie was going to commit to called and informed him they no longer have slots available,” said Sanders’ father Vincent Sanders. “It was a disappointing situation for him. He had told that school to hold a spot for him when he went on a visit there.
“And Zebrie had already called all the other coaches and told them he appreciated the experience, but he wanted to go elsewhere. Needless to say, now he feels like he has egg on his face.”
Sanders’ opportunity to commit to the Gators apparently slipped away this week after Florida accepted commitments from offensive linemen Ricky Barnum of Lakeland, Fl. and Matt Patchan of Seffner, Fl.
Georgia is in a situation similar to the Gators. The Dogs are tapped out on the total number of scholarships it has remaining for the current recruiting class.
“I have not talked to the people at Georgia,” Vincent Sanders said. “They told Zebrie if anything comes open they will contact him.”
Florida State and UCLA now appear to be Sanders’ new front-runners.
“He may take an official visit to FSU; he may take an official to UCLA,” Vincent Sanders said. “He’s going to go where they want him.”
Vincent Sanders was still stinging Saturday night from the disappointing news.
“As his dad, I was hurt,” he said. “When a head coach tells you ‘you’re a part of our school’ and then everybody backs away from you, how am I supposed to feel?
“I’m not interested in bashing anybody. I’m just telling you what happened.
“Zebrie is just fortunate enough that some other doors are still open.”

Zebrie shouldn’t have waited so long. That’s what happens when you want to play around.

I thought UGA had 2 slots for three ‘possible’ commits including Sanders. Does this mean that the CB from the All-Star game is coming to UGA?

I think this is great for college football. These “hot shot” kids might start realizing that if they want to play for an elite school, they need to commit and prepare early rather than have some dramatic cap waving announcement. It would be great if we got Sanders - clearly he’s talented - but It’s always nice to know that when a 4 star recruit calls and says he’ll play, your program can say “nah, we’re good”.
Go Dawgs.

What am i missing here? Apparently uga has someone else on their radar that is a silent commit. I wonder if uga told Sanders they didn’t have room left before he called florida. Apparently they did according to him saying he hasn’t talked with them. Does anyone know if all these kids will get into school? Carter said Tyson might not. If all these kids don’t get in, that opens a ‘ship up. Bring him on.

Zebrie you have yourself to blame. You failed in playing the recruiting game and your parents are responsible for failing you on giving you good advice. When you visited UGA lastyear you had a chance to commit then. You gave every indication that you would commit to UGA. Then UGA starts to fill their scholly numbers. You then call them to silently commit and they slow play you because they don’t think they have room for you now. So after a few weeks of that you then try to commit to uf and they tell you “please wait a week”. So you announce you will be announcing on the 13th and they did that because they had a commit they wanted to make sure they had before telling you they were filled.
Now you have to start all over again. Recruits this is a guy you need to look at regarding how you don’t handle the recruiting process.

Agreed. Every year we see more and more overhyped media events in high schools gyms with some 17-year old standing in front of a desk with 3 or more ballcaps, and the “the moment” comes when he selects one and puts it on.
It’s getting old. Maybe this will put a damper on the trend. This news is very refreshing.

Procastinators always end-up last. These students are used to being late to school, work, school work, etc. They never learned (though taught) the importance of punctuality and carry the poor habits through life. I feel sorry for the kid and hate UM more now if, indeed, he did pull this stuff on this kid. But..in a BIG Business like College Football, it is also good to know that coaches have leverage and that they no longer can wait for a recruit that LOVES to play around.

I have to say that I think it is somewhat poetic justice that Z. Sanders is left holding the bag. I mean these kids have basically an entire year to make this decision (some even longer), and yet they want to get all of the hype and attention by waiting until the end. Well, these top programs need kids that want to be at their school and when your a UGA or a UF or LSU you have plenty of players to choose from. So, why should they wait on the kid to waffle back and forth when they can get another equally “rated” or talented kid?

Mr. Sanders, instead of whining about how your son was wrong, you should take this opportunity to teach him the lesson of “first come, first serve.” I realize choosing a college is a big decision, however in the SEC there is fierce competition - not only to get in, but to play. Zebrie has no one to blame but himself. I honestly laughed when I read that he told Florida to “hold a spot for him.” Are you kidding me??? Florida, Georgia, et. al have slots to fill, a job to do, recruiting classes to complete. You’re either in or you’re out! Simple as that. I don’t feel bad for the kid at all.

Zebrie, your mom is a UGA grad, and every indication early was that you were leaning heavily toward signing there. If indeed that is accurate, you still wanted to look around, which is fine, but you put off announcing several times. This obviously led to confusion on your part, and it certainly did to those of us that are dawg fans. You seem to be such a fine young man from a good family. We all make mistakes and the most important thing is to learn from them. If you feel you did make a mistake, then I would challenge you to learn from it. I wish you were going to help us out and UGA, but that evidently will not happen. I wish you the very best wherever you go, and know they will benefit by your being there!

This is an annual occurence when some high school senior football players lose their minds. Did this kid really think Florida was going to “hold” a scholarship for him because he asked them to? Early commitment is as good as no commitment. Until signing day in February, it really doesn’t matter. If the kid has grades and decent test scores, he can go to some college, some where on scholarship. Someone needs to tell his Dad that the bigger school is not always the best school for some kids. And if the kid really wants to go to Florida, get Dad to pay for it and walk on the team.

BOILS DOWN TO>>> QUIT PLAYING AROUND AND JERKING SCHOOLS AROUND. THERE IS SO MUCH TALENT>> ITS UNBELIEVABLE>> YOU SNOOZE YOU LOSE!.. THE OTHER PLAYERS THAT COMMITED EARLIER>> OBVIOUSLY DIDNT HAVE one OUNCE OF DOUBT in their Commitment// If I am a school I want them INSTEAD.. HEY ZEBRIE>> MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY THAT>>> NOW YOU CAN GO TO PATHETIC FSU.. or the PATHETIC PAC-10 and UCLA>.. Doubtful you will qualify.. and by the way, thank your PARENTS for the good Advice.. congrats Mrs and Mrs. Sanders.. well done parenting!

This is why kids commit early and then continue to look around. And the same classless people that are saying “serves you right” or laughing at a kid who was pretty much lied to by coaches would be apoplectic and calling him all sorts of bad names if the kid had verbally committed to their school and then decommitted once he actually had a chance to consider his options. So those of you enjoying the schadenfreude: next time a kid decommits from your school late in the process, “serves you right.”

Anytime you have enough confidence to tell a coach to ‘save’ one for you, then you should say openly, yes I will go to XYZ Univ. I don’t fell the slightest bit of sympathy for Zebrie. Perhaps other recruits will take this situation as a lesson learned.

Hard to feel sorry for this kid or his parents. On one hand, you have a player like AJ Green committing a year in advance and honoring his word, then on the other hand, you have someone trying to play games. Good luck to him playing in the ACC or Pac 10. He won’t have a ring at either one of those schools, only a bad feeling when he watches the Dawgs win a couple of championships in the next few years.

If he really wants to play for Florida, enroll as a student and walk-on. Of course, he’d have to pay tuition like all the rest of us do, but they’ll find a scholarship for him next year. Believe it or not, most college students manage to attend without a football scholarship. Let him do it for a year.

It is a shame, really. It is a shame that so many people act so coldly toward a kid. Yeah, he waited too long. But we don’t really know all that went on between him and the coaches at Florida and Georgia. There is no reason for anyone on this blog to take his misfortune as a personal affront. It is his life and he has to live with his decision. Obviously he is a gifted athlete. He will land somewhere. I wish him all the best.

Everything happens for a reason. If he’s smart he would have taken a closer look at Coach Trickett at FSU. That guy is a proven winner and a top OL coach in the nation. Goto FSU and make the Gators pay for their deception. Urban Liar is getting quite the rep for saying anything to players and giving them false hope and then dissing them if he thinks a better prospect comes along. The lesson to be learned here is Urban’s word is worth s**! His games, lies, and worthless word will catch up to him soon enough and I can’t wait. No character at all!
Zebrie, this is the best thing that could have happened to you. Go to the Noles and be coached by the best OL coach in the country. Obviously he must have believed the lies Urban delivers to all recruits concerning FSU and other schools. Lying b*******.
Just be ready to work your a* off at FSU because Trickett doesn’t accept anything less than 100%. Zebrie future All American and in your face Urban Liar.

Mr. Sanders, your son tried to jerk Florida around by indicating he was going to Georgia last week. What was that all about…if you indeed told Florida to “hold” one for you? Now, you are going to blame Meyer for going ahead and giving his 2 line spots to players who wanted to be Gators and jumped on board when spots were available. I hope you enjoy playing at Fee Shoes University…or getting your a* kicked buy USC…in the future. Think of what could have been if you had chosen either Georgia or Florida earlier. The Sanders family can try to bad mouth Meyer if they want to, but they have no one to blame but themselves.

Only goes to show you how loaded Georgia and Florida are for the next couple of years to turn down a four-star player from the North. Of course, the kid shouldn’t have waited so long, but that’s what happens when you own the world at 18. You personally think that the world revolves around you because you’re the best player on the team, etc etc. Too bad for the kid. Hope he makes it well somewhere.

Personally, i bet this is the scenario played out. “You know we here at UF want you to be completely certain so you take your time and look around. Once again, Urban Meyer proves he’s a piece of sh*t.
“Florida’s been taking it on the chin with a loss to unranked Michigan, Meyer putting the blame on his players, Harvey (who reportedly hates Meyer) heading to the NFL, Florida running backs coach Stan Drayton defecting to Tennessee with this parting shot:
"The offense we were running in Florida did not have much involvement with the running back," he said during a news conference Wednesday night. "There was some frustration there, I must be honest with you."and now outlet after outlet slamming Meyer’s recruiting tactics and lack of character.
This was recently posted on noledigest.com
"While Gator fans will sit and give excuses or spin the details of what is going on, there is no denying that it seems like the UF staff flat out lies to these kids. Here is a quote from Trent Pupello (a player they initially compared to Jeremy Shockey), who is looking to leave the program this year: "Coach (Steve) Addazio (UF tight ends coach) told me to work on my speed," Pupello said. "He didn't say that my speed was slow or anything. He just said that everything (at this level) is faster. I need to work on speed and getting stronger, which is pretty much what we all need to work on. He said that they need me at tight end, that I’ll have an early chance to play and that all of the tight ends will play on the special teams. The examples are endless. Who is next to fall to the wayside at UF?"And from the Michigan site:
"The University of Florida stayed on the four star pass-catcher well all the way through. Things crescendoed recently after a conversation with Urban Meyer. According to Stonum, Meyer had a compelling reason why he should become a Gator. "He told me that he talked to Coach Carr and Coach Soup and that they told him that I would be a much better fit in the Florida offense than I would be in the one at Michigan," Stonum recalled. "I thought, wow, my coaches are selling me out.? I confronted them about it. I asked Coach Carr and Coach Soup about it and they said they never talked to that guy and that there was no way they ever said anything like that and that they think I should be a Wolverine. I believed them. Right then, I knew just how Florida rolled.?"And of course you can’t tell the story about the Jevan Snead story enough (recounted in the book MeatMarket:)
"Funniest thing I read in it concerned what Urban Meyer told Jevan Snead. Snead had watched outside the lines special on Tebow in which it showed Meyer and OC Dan Mullen in the stands. Problem was, Meyer had told Snead, committed at the time, that he was the only quarterback they were going after. When Snead asked Meyer about it, Meyer responded, "We are recruiting him for linebacker." I had heard that before, but got a big kick out of reading it in the book straight from Snead."By dave

Get off this kid’s back. If it was a UGA recruit, you’d all be suffocating him for support. Doesn’t matter. UGA is ranked #1 next season only to not even make it to the SEC Championship. Really think you’ll beat Florida again and then LSU before you even face the game that you’ll probably flop (Vandy). So it doesn’t matter how high and mighty you dawg fans feel. Its not gonna happen b/c you play in the SEC. Its the toughest conference in the land and that statement alone will be the very reason that USC plays Texas for the national championship in 09.

He is a liar and has no character whatsoever. Florida football is a sinking ship and Urban Meyer will leave very soon. After another 4 loss season next year he will be looking for someone to blame, then will jump ship to some desperate program like South Carolina.

A gaytor talking about thugs hahahahahaha what a f’in joke!! Go ahead and read the rap sheets for FSU and fu, they’ve had more arrests in the past year than FSU has the past 3 years, probably even longer. Oh and UCLA, please the only way they’ll be relevant is if Caroll goes pro and even then I doubt it. I agree though that some of these kids wait to long to commit thinking they’re God’s gift to football. Hey when it comes to o-linemen I don’t mind playing second fiddle, Trick dog can do wonders. Took a 3 star RS Freshmen DT and a 3 star TRUE freshmen and made them freshmen all americans!! Come on down to FSU Z, let Trick help you show the dawgs and gaytors they should have taken you.

Lesson learned for all future kids who are trying so bad to doe the “wow” factor on signing day…and this on backfired big time!!!!
If we have a scholly at UF that opens up, I think he should snag it…if not he surely will be playing for a lesser school (fsu, ucla, etc)

I love all these posts from noles trying to attack the character of Meyer when they got “it aint like he shot the president” Bowden as their coach. Geno “Taze” Hayes and the rest of your cheating team, what was it, like 25 or 26 players? Too bad they got suspended from the bowl and the rest of the team had to pay for it but then again, cheaters get what they deserve.
Lets face it, F$U is the 4th or 5th best team in the state and it is only gonna get worse. Good luck with trying to get the scraps left over from the real teams in Florida to join your wreck of a community college.

Most all coaches play the same game, but Meyer is a real piece of work. By the way Gators, Georgia is even harder to get in (for regular students) than Florida. And Richt’s character speaks for itself. You do not hear the horror recruiting stories about him you hear about other coaches and programs. A sidebar: I hope Sanders comes to Georgia!

I don’t know how the recruiting game is played but apparently the young man was not offered the scholarship just yesterday. It sounds like he had been stringing them along, perhaps looking for a better offer, “checking out his options”. (Sort of like when you invite the popular kid to the party and he wants to know who else will be there, or what the food will be.)
Serious recruits have quite a length of time to prioritize their schools and take an offer from one, rather than fishing for something better. Now he, like all of us, suffers to some extent from deciding to do that. Schools want recruits who WANT to come there, and who are ready to act on that. Not so, it seems, with this young man.
He will undoubtably play somewhere. The new school should be aware, however, that he has shown difficulty in making a committment, and if he thinks the grass will be greener somewhere else, or he will get to play more or play with better players, he might leave them.
I wish him the best. Hopefully this will be a lesson on decision-making for him, and maybe for others.

All you Gator(and Urban)bashers need to look at graduation rates and current GPA of your team vs UF. We are looking for guys who can win on the field, in life off the field, and in the classroom. Urban has done nothing to deserve the “liar” label. His programs have always been clean and admirable. You praise Richt for his upstanding character but bash Urban. That’s just so much “woof, woof, woof,” and that’s to be expected. But to be fair (if you’re able) you need to look at each coach’s total body of work, including their coaching history and graduation rate. Richt’s graduation rate as well as his tutelage under Bobby (no discipline) Bowden may just give Urban the edge toward the sainthood you are so desparate to bestow upon Richt.

OK posters, some of you are crossing the line. This is a young kid that got caught up in the recruiting game. He seems like a quality young man that comes from a great family. The truth is that none of you people have a clue about what went on in this situation. How many of you had all the answers when you were 17 or 18 years of age? If you were getting national attention like this kid, then you too would be eating it up. All the kids do. If you get a sense of power from belittling a kid via a computer, then you may need to get a life and some therapy. I know some of these people vent their frustrations via the blog because they are weak in the real world. This constant trash talking is a bit much. UGA had a wonderful season. We are loaded for next season. We have a great recruiting class coming in. The future looks very bright. Why are you angry? You need to count your number of seniors and check the number of opening on the roster before you determine how many players a team can sign. You are limited to 85. Trust Coach Richt. He knows what he is doing. Some of these people are having recruiting rage. The “gurus” are wannabes. If they know so much about football, a school would snatch them up. It is just a bunch of propaganda to get you to spend money on their products. I know of a case where a recruiting expert from Texas claimed he spoke to a player that I went to high school with. When I spoke with the player, he told me that he had never heard of the expert. They all have a bias. Tom Lemming shows no love to the South. He believes the mid west has all the talent. Where is he from? Illinois. He has several kids running 4.3’s. The truth is that not many kids can run a true 4.3. Check out the NFL combines. I remember when Forrest Davis proclaimed that Tyler Watts was a QB that could make the jump from HS to the pros. What pro team is Tyler Watts playing for? Yes, he has a bias to Alabama. Trust your coaches. The gurus have no more knowledge than the fans. They make up stats to fire up the fans to spend money. You cares how many “stars” a recruit is rated. Robert Edwards, Tim Jennings, Tray Battle, Kelin Johnson, and Clint Boling were not rated 4 or 5 stars. I love to hear the gurus claim they had the stars of today ranked so high when they were in high school. The reality is that Lemming did not have Knowshon, Rennie, or Matthew ranked as 5 stars. Oh, we would claim that now. Believe me a “3 star” in Georgia or Florida would equal a “5 star” in most parts of the country. When a kid commits early, you don’t see all the high rankings because he doesn’t peak interest. I promise you that Mr. Cornelius Washington will be a stud at UGA. 6’4 225 and a great athlete. Why don’t you hear about him? He committed early. It’s all about money.

Do you actually believe that Jevon Snead was told that Tim Tebow (the Florida Gatorade player of the year, the QB that held almost if not all Florida high school passing records, the QB that was recruited by USC, Alabama, Texas, etc.., the QB that ESPN did a special series on, the QB that didn’t play linebacker in High School, the QB that was ranked as the #1 dual threat quarterback prospect, the QB that was by everybody’s opinion a perfect fit for Myer’s offense) would play linebacker?
Even if Snead was told this, I am surprised he got into any school if he actually believed it.
Note to Dawg fans. Yes, I know Tebow sucks and you wouldn’t even want the guy on your team as a back-up but even Dawg fans have to admit that this maybe one of the most hyped high school athletes ever. To actually suggest that Snead believed he was going to be a linebacker is either ludicrous or he is a complete idiot.

This kid was courted by Meyer. PROBABLY was led to believe that he had time to look around (“you’re a part of our school” told to you by the coach would lead you to believe that). Take your time, make sure blah blah blah.
The beauty of this scam is that allows Meyer to continue to recruit. And what happened in December? Another local kid, HUGE DT, gets his 5th star. I can just see Meyer salivating over THAT one, especially after getting his a$$ handed to him by the Michigan defense. So lets start working on the DT and get him to decommitt. Once that is done, who can we unload because we are getting close to filled. Hmmmm, we got a kid that hasn’t committed yet. Tell him Bye-Bye and use that scholly on someone else.
You Gator fans can say he will now end up on a lesser team but that is garbage. ANY team will be better than this one. I looked at their depth charts. There is going to have to be a whole lot of shuffling around and I bet some kids that were told they would be playing one position will not. Just like last year…
Good luck, Z. You are already ahead of the game by NOT going to Florida.

It is good to see that the majority of people see this for what it is … a kid who simply waited too long to make his decision and lost his chance. According to the reports coming from the UGA and UF recruiting sites, Zebrie tried to commit to UGA first and was told that they were out of scholarships. Zebrie then picked up the phone and called UF only to find out that UF also was full and did not have a scholarship. This is not the first time or the last time that a kid waits too long to pull the trigger and finds himself looking at options #3 and #4. It happens every year.
As has been mentioned, Zebrie had been a UGA lean for over a year. Maybe he should have pulled the trigger earlier instead of dragging everything out. This is Richt’s and Meyer’s (and all of their assistants’) livelihood and they have to make tough decisions like this everyday.
For the morons blathering on about the Jevan Snead story from Meat Market, it is nothing but pure BS from Snead. Anyone who followed his recruiting when he was in HS know that Snead knew that UF was recruiting Tebow as a QB. Snead was quoted in articles talking about potentially competing against Tebow at QB at UF. Here is the real story about Snead. He is afraid of competition. It is that simple. It is why he decommitted from UF and committed to Texas. It is why he transferred from Texas to Ole Miss.
Other myths -
Pupello - The UF coaches told him he needed to improve when they were recruiting him. He simply did not pan out. I am at a loss as to how the UF coaches lied to him. This happens all the time with kids who were much more highly ranked coming out of HS than Pupello. I guess this means that coaches lied to all of those kids also?
Stonum - Make no mistake about it, Lloyd Carr is not a big fan of Rich Rodriquez. Carr did speak to Meyer during the bowl week as this was documented in numerous newspaper articles. Who knows what Carr said to Meyer and what Meyer said to Stonum. But, Stonum has been a Michigan commitment since September and did not take any other visits.
Meyer blamed the players for the Michigan loss - What? He blamed the coaching and said there would be changes. Which leads to …
Drayton - He was told before Tennessee came calling that his contract would not be renewed.
The truth is that any coach that is a good recruiter has been accused time and time again of being a liar. Richt, Fulmer, Spurrier, Meyer, Carroll, Zook, Stoops, etc. … all of these guys have been accused of lying to recruits.
BTW, I can only LMAO at the guy with the son who is a walk-on at Bama. Your son should have twice the stories about shady recruiting at Bama as he does about all of the other SEC schools combined.

Nick Saban, Mark Richt and Charlie Weis are sitting very pretty with top classes yet you don’t hear these type of accusations about them.
Face it. He led this kid along, making him think all was well to look around. Then when a 5 star DT came available (probably due to his infamous negative recruiting) he dumped Sanders to make room.

I worked over 80 hours per week, and last year Coach Richt gave him a scholarship and it help me out a great deal. Zebrie should have chosen Georgia in a timely manner, forget the hype! This comes from a player and his Mom that is very greatful for UGA and Coach Richt. The lesson here is for him to go in as a walk-on and let his parents pay for his school and maybe if he is good enough the scholarship will come later…His parents probably wont like it that way.

Pretty irresponsible journalism by the AJC with that misleading title (but that’s nothing new at the AJC). The title states that UF rejected his commitment, but then the article directly contradicts that by explaining that in fact he did not commit to UF and have his commitment rejected, but rather the school called him and told him he waited too long and his offer was no longer valid.
Later, the article states that the exact same thing happened with UGA, but by strange happenstance the article title did not read, “Florida AND GEORGIA BOTH reject commitment from Sanders.” But then, the writer knows that most people will just read the purposely misleading headline and that’s what they’ll think happened. Nice to see that in this ever-changing world, nothing ever changes at the AJC.

I feel sorry for the young man because he and his family do not truly understand this (college recruiting) is a business. Unfortunately both sides will say whatever they think will get them the best deal. Recruiters will push for the kids to come to their school, but if the kid misses the mark with the SAT/ACT score they will drop all communication with the kid as if they never existed. Kids hold out for the “best” deal and burn their bridges before they have finished crossing them. I personally feel their should be a Recruiting 101 Class for parents and recruits sponsored by their local schools. So many people think these schools are holding spots for them, when in fact they are holding spots for who they offer. They are not offering these positions to only one person. They are offering the same 1 position to 5-10 guys and they accept whoever accepts their offer. You’d have to be a super supreme blue chip prospect to get them to “hold” a spot for you.

DEAR BULL:
THAT 7-4 TEAM OF YOURS DIDN’T OWN MANY PEOPLE THIS YEAR SO I’M WONDERING IF YOU ARE STILL CLINGING TO THE UF WIN OVER OHIO STATE LAST YEAR. LOOK IT UP. OHIO STATE HAS NEVER BEATEN AN SEC TEAM IN 9 BOWL GAME TRIES. RICHT IS A CLASS ACT. UM IS UM. HE ALMOST RUINED TEBOW BY HAVING HIM RUN THE BALL OVER HALF THE TIME THIS YEAR. NEXT YEAR WILL BE THE SAME AND MAYBE THE KILLER FOR TEBOW IF THAT CONTINUES. URBAN MEYER = WIN AT ANY COST.

Z - Man!
I’m sure you are feeling left out of your dreams right now but keep in mind you bouned from one college to another and held out while most of the other recruits committed. Not sure if your dad advised you to do this but it was a big mistake.
As much as I dislike The Gators, it’s not their fault. They have to build a team and when you send out mixed signals then they have to move ahead without you.
I truly hope something comes open for you at UGA - you could be an immediate impact player and possibly be on a National Championship Team there.

Yankee - I do not know if you are stupid, but I am quite sure that you are not very bright based on your comments. A couple years ago, Phil Fulmer pulled a scholarship offer from an OL who had been committed to Tennessee for months. This all happened at the last minute and it was because Tennessee found OL they liked better. Last time I checked Fulmer was not having trouble finding recruits because of it. Maryland did the same thing to Slayton (RB at WVU) several years back. It happens every year … just like schools filling up with committed kids and not having scholarships available for kids who waited too long.
And once again for those who are slow … Zebrie called UGA first and was told that they were full and then he picked up the phone and called UF only to find out they also did not have a ship available.

“Zebrie called UGA first and was told that they were full and then he picked up the phone and called UF only to find out they also did not have a ship available.”
uh, Darius, that is NOT what the article says.
“The school that Zebrie was going to commit to called and informed him they no longer have slots available,” said Sanders’ father Vincent Sanders. “It was a disappointing situation for him. He had told that school to hold a spot for him when he went on a visit there.
“And Zebrie had already called all the other coaches and told them he appreciated the experience, but he wanted to go elsewhere.”
so the father involved says that his son WAS going to commit to Florida today. The player TOLD UGA thanks but no thanks. Then FLORIDA called HIM and said “too bad so sad” after assuring him they wanted him.
which is key here. IF Urban told him that they would save an offer, than he is slime. IF he did not, then Z screwed up.
I know what I believe happened and I bet a lot of recruits out there are thinking the same thing:-)

ALL coaches have negative things said about recruiting. Those coaches with the top three classes don’t have anything NEAR the amount or severity of things said that Meyer has. No where near. They also don’t have assistant coaches bailing in droves either.

Yankee,
You base your opinion that Florida left a kid high and dry on the “part of our school” comment????? Which could have been taken out of context and is not even attributed to UF…it could just as easily been a reference to UGA. Moreover, what if the coach said something like, “when you commit, you become part of our school”. But the kid didn’t commit. It is laughable that the dad feels that a school should hold a spot for his kid…now that is dumb!
And, Yankee, if you are so smart, why do you base your entire opinion on an article that has so many holes in it. Read the post above by the guy named PD…the AJC contradicts itself several times in the article. Doesn’t that make you a least a little suspect as to it’s accuracy and intent???

Moral of the story when you find a college that you like lock them down, schools have had so many recruits commit to them only to change thier mind on signing day. As a school you when you put it out there you want the love back and these recruits who just want to take these free trips and have fun on them have got to learn. I don’t feel sorry for the kid and I am not a gator of bulldog fan. If he becomes a starter at his school he will be fine because then he too will be used by his school for recruits and the football coachs’ will give him a boatload of money when a recruit comes to visit and tell him to make sure he has a good time and Mr. Sanders will do like all college athletes do and only spend a few dollars on the recruit and pocket the rest. WELCOME TO THE NCAA MR. SANDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He had told that school to hold a spot for him when he went on a visit there. What chutzpah!
now he feels like he has egg on his face.” He does!
“He’s going to go where they want him.” He was wanted before at UGa and Uf, but isn’t going either of those places because he couldn’t resist “playing the field”. Now he reaps.
The young man has good skills in football, they say. Hopefully he will develop other good skills that will take him even farther. And hopefully this hasn’t happened because someone was counting their chickens…thinking of the money this boy might command as a pro!

To Vincent Sanders:
If you knew your son wanted to go to Florida when he visited and asked them to hold a spot, then you should have committed then instead of shopping around. Wake-up fella you can’t wait forever these days and even more importantly you have to stay on top of the number of verbals and number available scholarships. If a school has 25 available scholarships and they have 25 verbals you’re SOL!
I don’t feel sorry for you at ALL!!! Number one your son bought Urban’s lies and secondly, you favored a school where the student body wears JEAN SHORTS. End of story.

I feel bad for Zebrie. By all accounts he is a good kid and will be a great asset to any school. Florida, like many other schools, always has a few kids that they lose out on every year. It’s not like you only recruit 24 players for 24 spots. I know UF wanted him to commit very badly, and he wouldn’t do it. Hopefully, he won’t waste his talent at FSU. Altough I believe he is a music major! lol

Wow. What is the main reason for college football? Separate you from your dollar. Main reason for newspapers? Same thing. PD hit in right on. Both UF and UGA did the same thing and the AJC is selectively reporting. How many actually care that this kid gets an education? Very few. Pretty much shows your real character and how much you really care about this young man. Football is a sport and NOT a way of life. If everything is so wonderful at UGA what about basketball right now? I wonder how many posters actually went to college. How many enrolled and dropped out. How many live their lives for college football. It is not about racism. It is not about football. It is about a young who is good at playing football and should be going to college to get an education. I do not remember the exact stats but it is around 1 out of every 100 high school athletes ever gets a colege scholarship at any level. One out of every 27,000 high school athletes ever collects a paycheck for playing any professional sport. So what is this really about? Sounds like very few of you care one bit about this young man. Grow up. This is all about money. Yes, even at UGA it is only about money. Nothing else, just making money. So, keep that in perspective when you claim to be supporting or not supporting this young man, or bashing another school. Even in high schools, it is about making money. It is not about developing character and preparing for the future. It is about hyping kids into believing they will play pro sports if they work out longer, lift more weights, throw more, etc. Very few coaches ever say “read more books or spend more time on your homework.” Put things back in perspective. Or are you so self centered and believe the world revolves around bashing another school. Pretty much wounds like that. I think it would be more important to support this young man’s education, finding a school where he fits and wish him well. To those of you espousing that UGA is the next national champion, well, that is why the game is played.

Yankee - The more you say the worse it gets as far as doubts about your intelligence. It is becoming more evident that the first person to question your smarts was on to something.
Zebrie - The gurus at the UGA recruiting websites had said a week ago that Zebrie had already tried to commit to UGA and had been told that they did not have a ship. It was not a secret to anyone that followed recruiting that Zebrie was a lean to UGA (his mom is a UGA grad) or that UGA was filling up quickly. Zebrie waited too long and UGA told him they did not have a spot. The article confirms that UGA told Zebrie they did not have a spot.
Asst coaches “bailing in droves” - LMAO! Drayton had been told his contract would not be renewed. Doc Holliday went back to WVU (his alma mater and where he had coached for quite a while) because they gave him $500k/year which was probably 3x what he was making at UF. But, I am sure that Doc left because he hated Meyer … not because of a $350k/year raise. LOL!
But, please continue with your ignorant blathering and do not bother to let a few facts get in your way.

King Gator You are typical jean short wearing UF idiot!!! Classless you say, why don’t you look at your own school and all of the off field antics that your athletes have gotten into over the years. And this year as in other years nothing was done about it. I believe this year your defensive leader was miraculously cleared of all charges within a week. That is some kind of due process( or intervention) you have in Gaines-Vegas. No suspension, no discipline. That is why your defense and offensive line play sux… “The Urban Legend “is not instilling values in your young men. The perspective that many around the nation have of “TUL” is that he is an egomaniac who is creating little excuse makers. A clear example of this was the Auburn loss. Auburn whipped you guys at the line of scrimmage, as often Auburn does to most, your house and he did not even give Auburn credit for the win nor did he acknowledge the freshman kicker he tried to ice, twice. Urban will be gone in 2 years who knows where but just get ready as he never leaves a program in a better state then when he got their.

First off Sanders was torn between GA and Florida and this caused him to wait too long to make a decision. Hopefully he has learned from this experience, Florida nor Georgia is at fault here but the Kid and his parents. Next the article did not say anything about Florida or Georgia not having Scholarships still available only that they no longer have a scholarship available for offensive lineman. Georgia filled their quota with Harman and Florida with the two guys who had committed earlier in the week. It is my understanding that Georgia has one more available and Florida has two but these have been put aside for defensive linemen/backs etc.
I feel very bad for Zerbie and wish him all the best and hope that things work out so he can sign with us on February 7th, as Harmon or another recruit could still change their mind and then we would have room for him which is what Coach Searels has told him.

Too bad we don’t have room for him. A few years back, one of our famous O linemen - can’t remember name right now but others will - gave up his scholarship so that we could bring in a top guy.

Is it just me or this recruiting getting more and more out of hand every year? Something needs to be done. Here is my solution: 1) No athletic scholarships offered to high schoolers. 2) A kid applies to the school he wants to go to. If he gets in, then great. 3) Tryouts for freshmen begin on date X. 4) If a kid makes it, he gets a scholarship for the second year. 5) Coaches are not allowed to talk to a kid until he is admitted to school.
I know I live in a dream world.

I have a question? It was said that UM was doing an in-home visit with Zebrie this past week. Did it actually take place? If so, this would have been a great time to discuss the future plans of this young man. If other OLs were close to committing, he should have been told so. I believe that UGA probably contacted him when AJ Harmon committed with the news and it was at this point when he was probably told that the offers for his position were filled. I think that this is also what played part on Jackson making a stronger commitment to UGA, because he knew that Omar Hunter could get his offer. Of course, I am making this assumptions on articles that have read and not any actual evidence that I have collected. I don’t know if anyone recalls last year recruiting when a very talented recruit (Stafford from La grange, GA)kept stringing UGA along only to be told at the end that he was no longer wanted at Georgia. Now, he is a very good defensive tackle at Kentucky. I hate to see Zebrie go through this and have some posters doing a bunch of name calling. Remember, this are 17-18 year old kids making a huge decision. Some of them coming from very bad backgrounds were they do not recieve any attention from their caregivers. Then all of the sudden, you have all this colleges calling you and telling you how much they want you and how great you’re. I am not saying that Zebrie comes from this type of background, for it’s obvious that his mother was a UGA grad according to these posts. Nobody knows how things played out except him and his family. They know what they were told. Until, you hear it from them, people need to hold their tongue and not lash out at CMR or UM for doing something wrong. I say this knowing how much I would hate to see a good recruit go to UF or UT. El futuro esta muy luminoso para los Bulldogs en 2008, pero aun asi no voy a decir que vamos a ganar un NC en ese ano.

Unfortunately, all signs point to Omar commiting to UF. TJ Pridemore says he will commit to Florida if Omar is going to commit to them too. Zebrie took too long. Should of commit before AJ Harmon. Seems to me that Sanders should go where he would really like to play - Georgia being one of them - and walk on. Just about every year, at least one scholarship guy blows out a knee, or just decides to hang it up, or gets into academic trouble. With like 80 scholarships, just go to UGA as a walk-on and earn the scholarship - one would prob show up by summer; or worst case, one gets 3 scholarship years and takes out loans for the first year and pays them back after college.
Why not just go where you really want to play. THat would be my advice, if he would love to be a Dawg. I can’t possibly see Richt saying “no” to that, and in a year, he’d be one of our best recruits getting an O-line scholarship after a red-shirt year paying tuition.

The biggest mistake of all is falling for Urban Liar. Meyer is completely truth challenge and has no integrity whatsoever. If I were Zebrie I would call up Kelly at Cincy,Groh at UVa., or Cutcliffe at Duke and maybe a few others. ND would be a good choice, but I think they are full with their OL recruits.

Listen up for all you JERKS!!! that are berating a 17 year old kid for commiting late. You are the reason this recruiting process is way out of control. ANY ONE WHO THINKS THAT IT IS OK TO INSULT AND BERATE THIS KID, BECAUSE HE COMMITTED LATE HAS NO LIFE AND NEED TO STICK TO PLAYING WITH THEM SELVES AND STOP LIVING LIFE THROUGH THESE FOOTBALL PLAYERS. Be an adult with some class!!!! You know some people make football fans look like the most morally questionable people out there in the world today. I have to say alot of so called UGA fans make it seem like you guys have no heart and I know this not to be true for my friends who went to UGA, so please stop making UGA look like the redneck capital of the world.

The flip side of this is everybody commits early; just to play musical chairs on Signing Day. No one would truly know were the recruits were going.

The thing that we need to realize is that schools only have a certain amount of scholarships each year. Recruiting is a tough task because you try and get the best players out there to fill your teams needs. Unless you get a solid commit you are still out there recruiting for that position because you have to get it filled. Zebrie should have not kept making his decision so vague. Neither Georgia or Florida knew 100% if he was going to commit so they did what they were supposed to do. They RECRUITED. You have to realize that there is only 22 days left until signing day. Schools can not wait on a MAYBE to fill the scholorship. If they did and their recruit did not sign, they would have a scholarship out there that was wasted. I feel bad for Zebrie, but college recruiting is very competetive and unless any team has a commitment they are going to continue looking.

You all are talking like this is an adult versed in the game of recruiting and you ASSume his parents are. He’s not doing anything that hasn’t been done before, and that’s he and his family’s choice. I’m almost certain there’s more to this story than we all know. And ‘Some Sense’? You don’t have any dayum sense, what difference does it make what the kids name is??? Or is it because the origin of that name gives you an inkling that he’s black! A*****! The fact that he’s talented and has all the academic requirements to play D1 ball should be enough…..bashing a kid..some of ya’ll are some sick mofos. 22 commitments and only 3 OL, and Richt’s passing on this one, then is he done for the year? If he doesn’t sign at least two more OL, especially after having to play 2 or 3 true FR on the OL this year (can’t remember exactly), then he’s still a dumb, stupid, frigging fool…

Zebrie Sanders is not the type of player we want in Athens. Although he’s a great player, all he has done at this point is prove that he is an over confident show off, who thought he could go where he wanted and when he wanted. There is no room for cocky “above other teammates” players in Athens.
Richt runs a high class organization. The bulldogs are destine for greatness over the next couple of years. Sanders is just the type of player that would prevent Georgia from being the great overall program that Richt has created. I say move on.

You people hate atheletes so much its scary. So what if a teenager wants to take his time making the most importaant decision of his life. I know for a fact thousands of students each year do not decide which school they want to attend until after they attend summer orientations at several schools. These student atheletes have to decide by early February. What if someone withdrew your honor student’s acceptance after the fact. It would be an outrage in which the local news would be called to discuss the merits of the situation. I honestly feel sorry for this young man he had planned to go to Florida and it didn’t work out. I rout for the Dawgs but I hope this young man gets to play in a happy home. Best Wishes

Everyone that is saying this kid screwed up needs to read this article from Sports Illustrated on him. Sounds to me like the kid got played big time by both coaches.
“I was supposed to commit today,” Sanders said after the All Star game. “I called Florida up and I called Georgia up. Coach Meyer and [Georgia] coach [Mark] Richt both told me that right now wouldn’t be the right time.”
This came on the same day that the Gators got a commitment from Seffner (Fla.) Armwood High offensive lineman Matt Patchan and Louisville (Ga.) Jefferson County lineman A.J. Harmon switched his commitment from Clemson to Georgia during the U.S. Army game.
So what gives? Why would the schools take those commitments and not one from Sanders?
This could be a “slow play,” meaning Florida and Georgia coaches are encouraging Sanders to wait as they sort out their scholarship numbers and determine if they have room for him in their classes. NCAA rules allow schools to bring in only 25 new players a year, and some may not even have enough open scholarships to sign that many. So Sanders will wait until Sunday before announcing his final decision.

this was a perfect example of a kid who wanted to waste all of his other official visits, even though he only wanted to go to one school.
there is a great reason why Penn St, Texas and others that fill up their entire recruiting classes even before the senior year starts for these hs players.

If this was my kid, I would be p** too. If it takes all 5 officials and 10 more unofficials to find the right school, I would tell him to take them. It’s deciding where you spend the next 3 or 4 years of your life. It’s an important one. That’s why some take longer than others.
If you have a scholarship offer to a kid, honor it. If you’re not going to take him, and knew you were set at O-Line, pull the offer. Don’t wait until the kid tries to commit to tell him he’s no longer wanted. Bad move by UF, not Zebrie Sanders.

A new dynasty is in the making, like something you have never seen before. To all of you doubters… You will not believe the talent that Randy is putting together on the same field, until you see it, so count the days to 2010.
To Georgia and Florida… congrats to both of you for a great year and for the next couple, but 10 and 11 is ours. Like it or not, we are coming back and there is nothing you can do about it, so enjoy your rides for now, but make no mistake… we are coming back to claim the BCS as ours again.

Most of you getting on this kid for waiting, obviously have no clue about the recruiting process. Now a days, coaches are looking for commits before their Junior year and some even sooner. Obviously, all the blasters have not been recruited or not of age yet. I hope you people do understand a kid’s education is involved. Let me ask you a question. How about the kid that commits to a lower Division I school before his junior year and has a big Senior year that is recognized by the majors. What does he do? Class and character is not a part of college recuiting. This young man wanted to take his visits and see all of his options, just like the earlier generation did but because he was not BIG TIME he got the shaft. ONLY the “can’t miss” players can enjoy the visits because the others will be dumped. If you are a “two star” you almost have to commit to the first D-1 offer you get. I don’t know this guy at all or anything about him. But he, nor any other high school kid deserve the blasting he is getting from you people.

From a Dad to a Dad.
Your right and many kids go thru this same issue year after year. Some coaches will say and do anything to keep a kid on a string as the final days of recruiting slots are filled for the obvious reasons.
It’s a shame that there isn’t more info available for new recruits. You would think that the top three recruiting web sites would be more forthright about the real snake pit and pit falls that any recruit might go thru… waiting for a letter from a college and that of coarse goes without say for the parents of the recruits as well, who are oblivious to the real world of recruiting.

You guys are kidding right? Every school that asks for a commitment from a recruit tells them the same thing - and that is the truth. It goes something like this:
“Zebrie - we are offering you a scholarship to play football at the Univ of Mars. This offer is contingent on you maintaining your school work, not getting in trouble, completeing all the requirements of the NCAA and our school to gain admission in our school. It also is contingent upon you making a commitement to our school to sign the letter of intent when it is presented and to have it signed by one of your parents and faxed to us on the date we tell you. This offer is based on the status of our recruiting to this date and that status can and will change. We only have XX spots for your position and should other players that we are recruiting accept this same offer before you make a sincere commitment then you may not have an offer. Would you like to make that commitment now??”
If there is no commitment - then its on the recruit. Period. If the recruit wanted to commit and the coach said no, or wait, it was because there was no offer of a scholarship at that time. Period.
If you can’t understand that much - you have no business here.

Response to blair… 1) You sound like a coach, that’s the script and you said it perfectly, but not how it is done behind closed doors or visiting in a parents home. Remember the coach wants this kid and is pushing his school as the best choice. while there, he will listen and voice many things a parent wants to hear, if he can’t get a signature, he will take a verbal and smile. 2) Assuming the conversation with the coach and he went something like, “Hold a place for me” and the coach agreed? and then, If the kid calls 2 weeks before NSD and from the All Stars game (Like so many other kids were declaring at that time) to inform the coaches of his choice, before announcing on TV, and then gets rebuffed, with, “Now is not a good time and to wait”, what does that say of the coach? 3) The all important letter of Commitment is sent after the kid declares… and now is hind sight by the coach, saying he should have signed earlier… but what he is not saying, is that he forgot about the kid and didn’t tell him of possible loss of acceptance and running out time… A tough lesson learned on any standard.
So blair… The world of recruiting isn’t as perfect as your script but it is nice that you told us how it is suppose to be.
peace.

Cane - that is close - but you are not quite there. Verbals mean nothing on the part of the coach or the player unless the coach feels he has a SINCERE commitment. In that case if the coach says he will hold a spot - and then the recruit by his actions makes the coach believe the commitment was not sincere - the coach can ethically withdraw the offer. The recruit, however, can do anything he likes including signing something saying he will come, and it is not binding. The only thing that binds is the Letter of Intent. It must be delivered to the recruit by registered mail. It cannot be signed before a certain time on the first day of the signing period and it must be witnessed by a parent or legal guardian. No coach or representative of a school may be present unless it is a signing ceremony open to the public. The Letter of Intent is the only thing that binds a player - his verbals mean nothing.
I agree that its not perfect - but thats the rules. If a coach makes a “commitable” offer and the recruit accepts - then the coach is a scumbag if he pulls the offer - and people remember that. However - if a recruit makes a commitment and swears right up to signing day that he is honoring his commitment - and then faxes in the letter of intent from another school - no one remembers later that the kid lied and cost another recruit a chance to play where he wanted.
That is they nature of the game. It is unfortunate that for alot of recruits - their words mean nothing and the coach has to protect his recruiting class as it affects his livelyhood.

Your last sentenance is my point… “the coach can ethically withdraw the offer”… that’s my point, yes he can but he didn’t tell the kid of his decission. Either he forgot or simply blew him off because his needs were filled but he didn’t tell the recruit and that’s my point. Think of how many kids declaired from a choice of 3/4 schools during the All Star and Armorall games. As the top players choose their schools, the schools held spots for them on verbals based on their need.
S** Happens peace.

Cat Five - I believe if you read the fathers words again - here they are - “The school that Zebrie was going to commit to called and informed him they no longer have slots available,” said Sanders’ father Vincent Sanders.”
So - the coach DID call him as soon as got a commitment from another player. He could no longer wait on Sanders decision - and the spot was filled.
At any rate - appears Sanders has landed at another school.
