Harmon picks Georgia over Clemson

Published on: 01/05/08

Georgia’s top-three recruiting class received a boost today when Jefferson County’s A.J. Harmon chose the Bulldogs over Clemson and South Carolina.

Harmon, considered the 10th-best offensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com, had maintained for months that he was headed to Clemson.

But the 6-foot-5, 325-pound lineman elected to stay in his home state by sporting a Georgia cap during the third quarter of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Georgia center Fernando Velasco is one of the primary reasons Harmon chose the Dogs.

Velasco, also a Jefferson County product, and Harmon are close friends.

UGA really is a team of destiny. Can we be stopped?

Good for AJ and even better for the Dawgs. This kid is huge and talented and with some of these former JUCO guys leaving soon, Harmon should be playing a factor in this O-Line in no time. Also, whats the deal with Jarboe and Zebrie sanders? I thought Sanders was supposed to commit by now?

JawJuh dawg, Jarboe just committed to Oklahoma. Sucks, but we’re loaded at WR and now with Harmon, we’ve picked up the 25 committments for the allotted scholarships we’re projected to get. However, what remains to be seen is how many of these kids will honor their verbals. Kids like Xavier Avery who is may be drafted by the MLB…

Jarboe to OU….but with T. King and AJ Green we are deep at WR. AJ is acually on TV now. Kid looks like he will make an impact next year in Athens at WR.

AJ Harmon will probably play DT. He is a man amongst boys. That was a hell of a steal.

That puts at 25 commits.

Sanders might have to be a walk-on.

I think Jarboe is probably thinking about his chance to play right away. Hopefully it all works out for him and his family. One thing I do know, Stoops will not come close to Coach Richt in molding this young man past college football to be a better person and adult when he has to make life decisions that doesn’t have anything to do with football. Parents want their babies taken care and Coach Richt is taking care of all of his DAWG babies. Look at what he did for Michael Grant. He’s the one that assured that young man and his family that he would find him a home and he made the call to Arkansas so that this young man could live his dream of playing big time college football in the SEC. How many coaches would have done that? Much love to our DAWGS!!!!

Saw the Harmon commitment on TV just now.

Can anyone here PLEASE tell me exactly what he said? I replayed it 5 times and could only make out about 3 words. Is he going into the ESL program in Athens?

Thanks!

Does anyone know why AJ Green isn’t playing hardly any wide receiver for the White squad in the Under Armour AA game? I keep watching their offense and the only time I see Green on the field is during kickoff returns.

Great pick up with Harmon. What about Deangelo Tyson? Is he still with us? During the game they showed him listed with Ohio State! I’m hoping they just screwed up with the graphic. Anybody know anything on this? And we just moved to the Number 1 team ranking with the Harmon pick up on Rivals.

Tom that is not appropriate to make fun of an 18 year old kid. He has to be nervous. He is making a very difficult decision. Not everyone can be as perfect as you. Making fun of kids shows a lack of class. I bet you never made a decision on national television. Phil, the DeAngelo Tyson thing was a mistake. He is very much a future Dawg. A.J., I am glad that you selected to join the Dawg family. Welcome to the family. We have the best OL and DL coaches in the game. Where will UGA wind up in the final polls. OU was whipped. VT lost. OSU will get whipped by LSU. We both play in the SEC. We both had two loses. We defeated UK. University of Georgia is the National Champions. IF not this year then next.

Well put dawgtime. A.J. looked incredibly nervous before making the decision. Sometimes you see a 6’5 teenager and forget he’s just a kid in high school!

Pulling for LSU too. Remember, they defeated SC and UT so bringing up the common opponent of UK doesn’t hold water. Just wish we could have had our shot at the tigers in the SEC championship game. Didn’t happen, time to move on and look forward to next year. GO DAWGS, SIC ‘EM!

“When I committed to them [Clemson] I was 100 percent,” Harmon said.

“I am 100 percent Georgia right now.”

“But I know it is not over until February,” he said. “I hope I can make a decision by February.”“I’m kinda sure about Georgia, and I am not sure at the same time.”

A solid commit I’d say.

These “gurus” need to lay off and let these kids make a decision. Its getting old, grown men fawning after high school kids, and the hat thing has got to go. Thanks Tom Lemming, youre killing us.

AJ has proven to be a great Warrior. He will be an awesome DAWG. Look forward to seeing “flight 75” in Athens

AJ said something like “This is for my people in Wadley, Georgia”. This is AJ’s hometown. It is an extremely poor neighborhood in Jefferson County. They are all extremely proud of AJ and playing in his home state probably played some part in his picking UGA. AJ struggled in school but he made it through because his teachers like him. He is a “teachable” kid. He’s not some chump who thinks he’s God’s gift to sports. When you come from an impoverished background, many times you bear the weight of all those people on your shoulders. You’re the one kid from Wadley freakin Georgia who “made it”. Silver spooned kids and their parents would not understand.
