The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/28/07
The Georgia-related storylines will be plentiful during next weekend’s Under Armour All-America Game at Disney’s Wide World of Sports near Orlando, Fla.
The contest, which features many of the top class of 2008 football recruits from across the nation, will air live on Saturday Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. on ABC.
Participants who have committed to Georgia include:
Tight end Dwayne Allen of Terry Sanford High in Fayetteville, N.C.
Receiver A.J. Green of Summerville (S.C.) High.
Offensive lineman Ben Jones of Bibb County (Ala.) High.
Running back Carlton Thomas of Frostproof (Fla.) High.
Participants who played high school football in Georgia include:
Linebacker Daniel Franklin of Habersham Central, who committed to Oklahoma during his junior season.
Defensive tackle Omar Hunter of Class AA state champion Buford, who committed to Notre Dame during the summer.
Receiver Josh Jarboe of Cedar Grove, who is undecided but is considering scholarship offers from programs such as Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Ohio State and Tennessee.
Cornerback Neiko Lipscomb of Tucker, who is undecided but has offers from schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan State, South Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Cornerback Terrance Parks of Creekside, who committed to Florida State during the summer.
Safety Jamoris Slaughter of Tucker, who committed to Notre Dame earlier this year.
Defensive end Chase Thomas of Walton, who picked Stanford over Auburn, LSU, North Carolina and Tennessee earlier this month.
Defensive tackle Brandon Thompson of Thomasville, who is undecided but has frontrunners in Clemson, Georgia Tech, LSU, Ohio State and Tennessee.
Other notables include offensive linemen Antoine McClain of Anniston (Ala.) High and Zebrie Sanders of Northmont High in Clayton, Oh. who are considering Georgia. Ricky Barnum, a guard for Lake Gibson Senior High in Lakeland (Fla.) is still considering Georgia Tech.

GODAWGS, you forget Israel Troupe, who redshirted and will have just as much eligibility as Green. Troupe is speedy, but most importantly, he has soft, soft hands.
Look for Matt to throw for about 3500 yards next year.
We’re going to be VERY difficult to stop from anywhere on the field with our combined running and passing games.

AJ Green, Matthew Stafford, Knowshaun Moreno, and the rest of the boys will be nasty on offense. We should score a lot of points. If our defense steps up, we should compete for the National Championship. Go Dawgs!

Moreno may cost Stafford a Heisman, and Stafford may cost Moreno a Heisman. Florida and/or LSU may cost both of them a Heisman if UGA is not careful.

For sure, there are games where a receiver can make an impact, and I look forward to seeing AJ step in and deliver. However, we have to remember “impact players” don’t always make the impact (at least immediately) that we hope for. For example, Reggie Brown really didn’t shine until his senior year. I am MOST excited about Ben Jones who can make a quick impact on the O-line where games are really won or lost. Our line is loaded for the next 3 years and will be the key to the running game, clock control and protecting Stafford - all keys to winning the SEC for the next few years and aiming for the NC game. Great news for the future, and I hope our coaching staff can quickly bring these guys up to the next level.

Oh, and what is with two of these guys going to Notre Dame? Who wants to play for a 3 win team? I’m not sure, but I don’t think the Irish will be “fighting” in any bowl games before next December…

Why am I not surprised that NASCARfan knows that Troupe has “soft, soft hands.” Sounds like a man that speaks with experience. Shame on you.

Ware County OL Ben Jones is a beast. He should be a 4 or 5 star player. He absolutely man-handled a ton of blue-chipper D-linemen at Scout.com Elite camp last summer. Have a looksee & enjoy the domination! :-)

I’m planning on going to a practice if not the game. I live 15 miles from Frostproof, where Carlton Thomas played. I saw him several times this season, and I can tell you he is quite exciting to watch. He’s small, but so is Brandon James and Trendan Holliday. I can’t wait to see him behind a good OL (which he did not have at F’proof Hi)! Go Dogs!!

Hey Bozzo the Blunder Dawg: Heisman talk? Isn’t that a little rich even for this blog?

NW Dawg, as far as the Heisman talk is concerned, I even mentioned Knowshon as being my early pick to win the ‘08 Heisman . I did so on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” a couple of weeks ago. In other words, it’s not something that a lunatic fringe homer might say. I’m a columnist with the Boston Globe—about as far from being a lunatic fringe homer as can be.

Leave Nascarfan alone. We need all the support we can use so although most NASCARP fans are mentally challenged he, as a dawg fan, may be an exception.

Can some idiot recruiting service please explain to me why Ben Jones isn’t a 5 star OL and the best Center prospect in the NATION? That kid is an animal and will start at Center as a true freshman at UGA. Thank God we’ve got him!!!

players are signing with notre dame because, well, who exactly do they have to beat for a position on the team? Thats instant starting time as soon as they sign the letter and, because its Notre Dame, instant exposure to the rest of the world, sadly force-fed that crap from ESPN and NBC. And if i here one more sportscaster tell me how Hawaii doesnt get any exposure because of their geographical location, im going to die. USC gets tons of exposure and their games are on a 10 at night. it has nothing to do with location and everything to do with schedule. God Bless Hawaii and their season, i really do look forward to this game on tuesday, but lets be realistic: until anyone else in the country plays an SEC strength schedule nobody down here is going to recognize you with the respect administered to the respective SEC teams

Wow Bob Ryan posting on the AJC Blog…
Not sure how to read into this, but I’ll start by asking are things in Boston that bad that you need to keep up with our players in the south just to have something good to talk about on the college front… isn’t Boston “Winnersville” of the pro ranks? Hmmmmm the truth that’s dripping down your leg is that neck of the woods in the college and high school ranks stinks!
But I do think you’re a pretty astute journalist.
