Wells no longer a Florida State lock

Published on: 12/20/07

Despite committing to Florida State in August, Gainesville defensive end Keith Wells said Thursday night he’s back in evaluation mode.

“I’m still verbally committed to Florida State, but at the same time I’m still taking visits to make sure Florida State is where I want to be,” Wells said.

“I’ve visited Ohio State and Auburn. I’ll visit Florida State in January, and possibly Tennessee and Notre Dame.”

The Fighting Irish haven’t yet extended a scholarship offer. But Wells believes he is only a visit away from receiving one from coach Charlie Weis’ staff.

“Notre Dame hasn’t offered, but [assistant] coach [Bill] Lewis wants to see some film of my season this year,” he said. “Hopefully, if my film is impressive they will offer.

“They may offer; they may not offer. I just want to get up there on my visit.”

Wells said he’s trying to keep an open mind when it comes to the academic scandal that rocked Tallahassee earlier this week.

“I think about it,” Wells admitted. “But it really doesn’t effect how I feel about Florida State because that’s only 20 or so individuals who decided to make that decision.

“I don’t think a school should be judged by a group of individuals who made a bad decision. But it does have me thinking ‘what is going on inside Florida State with what the recruits can’t see or the parents can’t see.’”

Wells, who says he will take five official visits prior to national signing day, said he gets mixed signals from his recruiting coach at FSU, Jody Allen, when they discuss him taking visits to other schools.

“I spoke to coach Allen after I visited Ohio State, and I don’t think they were too nervous then,” Wells said. “But I know before I took my visit to Ohio State he didn’t want me to go on any trip. I guess he was nervous then.

“We have three other defensive ends besides me committed, so I don’t think they’re too nervous. They just want to see what I’m going to do. I’ll make a final decision two weeks before signing day.”

I would suggest to Mr. Loftley to take the best route that’s given to you by those two schools. Be objective on those visits and make your decision well. You can get a education at either place but what kind of quality is that education is the question you should ask. Also, in football terms, which place will you see the field soonest, what type of relationships will you have with your position coach and coordinator and what are the players like. Either way, it sounds like he can not go wrong with either because both places offer a good opportunity. Good luck.

Has anyone heard the latest on TE D. Allen and DE T. Jackson on their status? Both show as soft verbals. Do we really need another 4 star TE?

Yes We can use another TE.. Allen might end up as an OT.. At 6’ 4” 250 now, he could grow to 6’6” and 290.. And UGA is famous for moving guys from the O to D side of the ball. He’s a great athlete, so YES “another 4 star TE IS needed”..

As for Toby J.. He’s been taking all his visits.. Who can blame a young man for that?? I think he’s realizing that UGA is the place for him, as he makes the trips to other schools..

Go Dawgs!!

Nathaniel,

Do what I do when idiotic UGA or any other school makes idiotic statements: Ignore them. You only tend to perpetuate the trash-talk by acknowledging it. Every school has stupid fans.

You’re comments too are bordering on inane. Keep it real. We’ve been to our Conference Championship Game more recently than UGA has been to theirs. Not throwing mud, just stating a fact. The ACC isn’t quite as weak as you seem to think, nor is the “almighty” SEC as strong (and that’s opinion).

This isn’t a p** contest. This blog is supposed to be about recruiting, and what the kids are doing. Grow up.

Looking at facts, are we? FACT The last two teams to win the SEC title played for the national title. FACT This years SEC champion demolished this years ACC champ. FACT SEC champs usually factor into the BCS national title picture. (3 championships 1 TBD 1 undefeated left out) FACT ACC champ hasn’t even been considered in almost a decade. How’s that for facts?

Recruiting has been finishng earlier and ealier each season. you have to suspect anyone not committed at this point doesn’t have the grades - or just plain missed the boat. the good schools are full.

I’m sorry, I thought this was a blog on college football recruiting, not hoops and baseball. I think your stretching a little too much to try to keep from getting your feelings hurt.

My best friend graduated from Tech and I from UGA in the early 80’s. Saturday we went to the college football store on Mansell in Roswell. There were thousands of college football items for sale; you walk in and it is like a bazaar with stuff all over the place. The interesting note is that there is almost no Tech stuff. The clerk who worked there was actually in the Tech band. My friend groused to him about the slim Tech merchandise selection and the poor guy shrugged and said, “Frankly, the Tech stuff doesn’t sell all that well”. There was way more Georgia stuff (as you would expect) but also way more UT, Ala, Fla, FSU, Miami and Auburn merchandise. This just goes to show how unpopular Tech is in its own hometown. Sad, very sad.

Getting back to recruiting…..

Sounds like some “interesting” stuff went down in a recent switch by one recruit from an ACC school to an SEC school. Given this particular SEC schools history, it’s not a surprise.

The question, now, will be whether or not those in charge at the ACC school decide to pursue the issue and bring specific events to the attention of the governing organization.

The truly sad part, however, seems to be how a wonderful and well-respected young man got used by someone he trusts. Disgraceful.

Wow, that is about as cryptic of a blog as I have ever seen. An unnamed recruit switched from an undisclosed ACC school to another undisclosed SEC school and the undisclosed school of the first part may or may not decide to pursue remedy on some undisclosed issue that may or may not have actually happened. This unnamed recruit was apparently used by one of the undisclosed schools coaches that will go unnamed. Wow.

Hey, 82Dawg…did it ever occur to your lame brain that the reason there is less GT stuff in the store is that GT fans don’t go around all the time wearing stupid caps, t-shirts, underwear, whatever with a college logo on it? Could that be a sign of a higher level of maturity? Of course, all of that UGA stuff looks pretty cool when you are out there on your tractor, or driving your pulpwood truck

laughing: Are you Serious with that comment? All MAJOR College fans wear their favorite schools attire. Your so clueless. Turn on the light bulb. If you think that UGA Fans are the only ones that buy their schools stuff then you are a dope!

It’s a true comment. Tech fans only back their sorry team when they do well and of course that is not often. You need to fill that sorry High School Stadium every Saturday regardless. UGA did it with Goff as head coach. Just try selling out one season!

Then again, I can’t blame you for not wanting to wear a Tech cap or T-Shirt…… I mean, it is Tech. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing that crap either. Oh, nice bowl game.
