Jackson rethinking Tech commitment

Published on: 12/17/07

Georgia Tech may be on the verge of losing its second commitment in the past 10 days.

Henry County’s Chris Jackson, rated a four-star receiver by Scout.com, plans to choose between Alabama and Tech at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Jackson, who originally committed to the Jackets nearly a year ago, admitted Monday evening that the Crimson Tide are now in the picture.

“It’s wide open,” Jackson said. “[My parents and I] are talking about it tonight. I’ll make my announcement [on Tuesday].”

Jackson’s interest in Alabama was sparked following the recent dismissal of former Tech coach Chan Gailey.

Gailey’s firing prompted Jackson to take an official visit to Tuscaloosa earlier this month. He took an official visit to Tech over the weekend.

Jackson told the recruiting blog last week that he planned to remain committed to the Jackets.

“Alabama did a great job of recruiting me, but I’m still committed to Tech 100 percent,” Jackson said on Dec. 9.

But Jackson backtracked late Monday by confirming that Tech’s coaching swap will have an impact on where he plays college football.

“It’s the whole coaching change at Tech, that’s what this is about,” said Jackson, who said last week he planned to enroll at Georgia Tech in January.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Jackson met new Tech coach Paul Johnson during an in-home visit a week ago.

“Coach Johnson is a good guy,” Jackson said. “We had an in-home visit on Monday [Dec. 10] and we watched some tape.”

Sean Renfree, a quarterback at Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale, Ariz., withdrew his commitment from Tech on Dec. 8.

If Jackson picks AL over Tech he probably couldn’t remember more than four or five plays anyway.

We don’t need selfish football players. Paul Johnson is the best X and O coach in college football and he will win with team players. Selfish recievers are for UGA.

We’d love to have you at GT, Jackson! Pick the school where your heart is. I promise you, you’ll value a GT degree more than you would an Alabama degree.

at GTFan. Nice article. LOL at Nick Saban looking to play coaching musical chairs again! What’s worse, Saban’s ego or Alabama’s unrealistic fans who still want the Bear to come back form the grave to coach? With today’s recruiting restrictions, even the Bear would not have his past successes in today’s college game.

This is what Arkansas fans have to look forward to with Bobby Petrino. What’s the over/under for the number of years of Petrino at Arkansas? I put it at 2.5 for opening bids.

BTW Jackson, pick the school, not the team.

Sounds to me Rex Robertson should be ashamed of himself this evening (and I hope he reads this).

You GT guys are a joke! Relying on false reports and old outdated cliches about Alabama fans. Your fans are a joke and your program is pathetic!

I’m not here to pick fights with Tech fans, whoever Jackson chooses is going to get a great receiver. That being said, the Saban article is a hoax put on a fan’s blog and the Rivals WVU site posted an article this evening debunking it as 100% fabricated.

ALABAMA is going to have a top 5 class. The TIDE is cleaning house from the lesser talent Shuls recruited. This is the first year BAMA will have all 25 scholarships. The TIDE is raising!

Who said that I was a Tech fan? Bama has nothing else going on in the state to distract them from their football, that accounts for their “overexuberence”. What an existence. Even if the article is fake, do you not get the feeling that it could happen? Really? Why must people on these blogs always resort to name calling? Did I touch a nerve? Do you have no self-esteem?

Oh, that was directed at you Matt, the others merely stated their opinions. And if GT’s program is pathetic, what does that make Bama’s, with their stirring 6-6 seasons and their stellar effort against Louisianna-Munroe? However, fear not, these hard times rarely last forever, even for the Dukes of the world.

I guess Rodriguez would be Bama’s coach and not Michigan’s if all those old, outdated cliches about Bama football fans were untrue. The Bama faithful and media scared him off, and then Bama had to overpay to anyone who was willing to take the head coaching job. But if Saban sticks around, I suppose the Tide will roll again. That is, if you don’t run him off first.

GTFan, there is no need for mudslinging. If Chris decides to play for GA Tech, welcome him with open arms, He he changes his mind, and decides to play for Alabama, wish him well.

This is a huge decision for a young man, and with the recent coaching change at Tech, to a man he felt loyalty to, no one should disrespect him. Alabama has great tradition, as does GA Tech. I had the privilege to meet with Coach Dodd and Coach Bryant and both were fine southern gentlemen that represented their programs with dignity.

Best of luck to whichever decision Chris makes.

OMG….wow…you are one bitter guy with Alabama. My guess is you are just the typical obsessed Aubarn fan. BAMA has a top 3 recruiting class right now and we could end up better than that. Nick Saban is showing exactly what he is….a GREAT recruiter. BAMA needs to build it talent level to be a more competitive team and that is what he is doing.

As for SOME of you GT fans, why bash a kid because he is looking to make the best choice for himself. He has not even committed to Alabama yet and some of you are already making comments about him being selfish and what not. He was comfortable with Gailey and would have been at GT if he was not fired. GT made the best decision for itself in hiring Johnson and Chris Jackson needs to do the same.

Anyone else notice that it’s the SEC fans that seem to have a hard time with the concept of only hitting the “Post” button ONCE?

We love our stereotypes, don’t we? Nerds and Rednecks and Tickle Piles and Trailor Trash to no end. As a GSU graduate and a lifelong UGA fan, I find myself in a precarious situation. In the end, I hope PJ has the bugs undefeated heading into Thanksgiving week and Richt is prepared to serve them their first loss on a silver turkey platter. Hopelfully, both find themselves in the BCS. And I already know that the Eagles will be waxed next Septemeber, so save your breath… or finger muscles. Go Dawgs! and I guess from now on, save late Novemeber, Go Jackets!

Why would a four star receiver even consider playing for a coach that runs a triple option crap offense anyway. The kid needs to play for Saban. Just wait until they try that $&#% against SEC and some ACC teams. It’s going to be hilarious!
