Daniel commits to Northwestern

Published on: 12/10/07

Roswell running back Alex Daniel will play college football in the Big Ten for Northwestern.

Daniel chose the Wildcats over Ball State, East Carolina, Tulane and Utah.

“I went on my official visit there this weekend,” Daniel said Monday evening. “I thought it was a great town and there was a lot of things to do. The campus is only about 20 minutes from Chicago.

“I liked the team and the coaches. And they have great facilities.”

Daniel pulled the trigger on the commitment to Northwestern after conferring with his parents late Sunday.

“I won’t take any more visits,” said Daniel, who was scheduled to travel to East Carolina on the weekend of Jan. 11.

Well-wishers sought out Daniel after word of his commitment began spreading throughout Roswell’s campus on Monday.

“All of my friends are just proud of me,” he said. “I had a lot of people come up and congratulate me today.”

Daniel is now eager to sign his letter of intent in February.

“I enjoyed meeting all the coaches from all the other schools,” he said. “And they did a great job recruiting me.

“But it’s a pretty big relief to just get all this behind me.”

Sanders still committed to Ole Miss despite coaching change

Peachtree Ridge cornerback Brandon Sanders is optimistic Ole Miss made the correct move by hiring former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt to replace recently fired Rebels coach Ed Orgeron.

“Obviously, [Nutt] is a great coach,” Sanders said. “He definitely knows what he’s doing. I’m happy to hear that he’s the head coach.

“As of right now, I still plan on going [to Ole Miss]. I really haven’t heard from the new coaching staff yet. As soon as he gets his staff together, he’ll get out to his recruits.”

Following a 3-9 season, Sanders wasn’t caught off guard when Orgeron was fired.

“I really wan’t too surprised when I heard,” Sanders said. “I really did like coach Orgeron. He was a great guy and very genuine, as far as him wanting me to come to Ole Miss.

“When I heard he was fired, I thought ‘hopefully, we’ll get another good coach.’ But it was disappointing when I heard the news about coach Orgeron.”

I’m a GA Bulldawg 2nd only to supporting Lowndes. I hope Jamal goes to GA and catches for Stafford. I understand the RB at ECI has GA on the top of his list also. Imagine Washaun and Knowshown in the same backfield with Stafford while he throwing to Jamal Patterson. Sounds great doesn’t it?!!!!!

Did yall see Washaun’s third touchdown in the dome. Where he stopped on a dime to elude one pursuit angle, then drug a defender 10 yards to the endzone. That boy getting dragged looked like he hitched himself to a truck.

Washaun- become a bulldawg!! All you gotta do is change that E to a G and you’re there!!

That sounds great, but you seem to be forgetting about Caleb King. Not to mention Dontavius Jackson, Carlton Thomas, and Richard Samuel: Our three RBs in this class ranked in the top 15 (according to Scout). A ccording to ESPN’s RB superlatives, Thomas has the best moves in this year’s RB class, while Samuel is rated as the best load-carrier: “Guys who are capable of wearing down a defense over the course of a game and are able to run inside consistently. You have to be tough, display power, fall forward and be strong in the fourth quarter. These guys are finishers”. Samuel might move to LB, where he is also a playmaker. I also heard that he is actually only 16 years old, in which case he’ll probably redshirt and be even closer to Washaun in eligibility. I think King also is the real deal. Remember, there was a time when he was regarded as the top RB prospect in his class. Either way, we are set at RB for a while, but the more the merrier. We have some great WRs coming in, but if Jamal comes in and PLAYS as a freshman, it will be still be Stafford’s senior year. Lucky for him we have a great QB in the system, Logan Gray, and probably a great one coming in next year’s class. We really need to focus on recruiting some OL so that we have adequate turnover when our young guys on the line graduate or move-on. I hope Washaun and Jamal end up here, but don’t sleep on these other guys: they’ve got skill.

Congratulations to Alex also. Go show ‘em what southern football is all about.

The young guy from ECI looked better than King did before injury. Those other guys better watch out he is for real not just hype like so many before him.

Why do all these top 15 talented running backs want to go to UGA and sit on the bench behind Morino (the second coming of Tony Dorsett) and King (HS All American)?

Just keep stockpiling the OL!!!

Alan, I hate to say this… But… Football is a game where injuries “happen”.. Going into this season, with Sr’s Kregg Lumpkin & Thomas Brown leading the way, who’d a thought Knowshon would get the totes he did? Then the #4 RB, Johnson, gets dinged & Moreno is the only viable RB left. (Remember, CMR was thinking of un shirting King for the KY game?)… So to answer your question about why so many great RB’s want to come to the Classic City.. Injuries, attrition, position changes, etc.. all happen.. Plus, they want to play for a great HC in Mark Richt in the best football conference in America!!!

BullDAWG Rick: So these talented running backs should go to UGA to get splinters in their butts so, just in case, someone gets hurt? What a waste. I don’t guess they will ever make the NFL: neither will your talented second string quarterback. In Athens, splinters must be worth more than NFL dollars. What a neat place.

Richt plays guys who deserve to play, even if that means platooning some positions. RB is a good place to do that to help prevent injuries. That said, Richt is smart enough to go with the hot hand when its necessary. There’s a reason he is such a successful coach and a reason these guys want to come play for him. They come to Athens to be part of a winning tradition and part of a family. It is a “neat” place, where players buy into a team philosophy. But, to suggest that coming here would ever hurt their chances of making it to the NFL is ridiculous. Take Thomas Brown, for example. When he’s been healthy, he’s been terrific. He was a highly regarded recruit, but he’s been banged up in between showing great promise. He’s short for an NFL RB at around 5’9”. According to Sporting News Draft Dish, TB projects as a possible third round pick b/c of his blitz pick-up, his hands, and his strength and toughness. Trust me: if you’ve got the talent, you’ll make the money. Why not on your way to making that money, you come make the most of your college experience with a great program like UGA.

By the way, I like Ealy a lot. He’s going to be good. But to say he looks better than King did before his injury is a lot. King was the MVP at the Army (?) all-american camp out of the 500 juniors invited. He was ranked as the top RB in hs class at one point. Ealy is playing A-ball and we see him facing A competition. King played at Parkview his sophmore and junior year against AAAAA teams and was unstoppable.

Ealy would be awesome to have in Athens !! Work ethic in the weightroom and classroom , as well as on the practice feild will be the difference from one back to the next. Wait till the NFL combine,,, and see the Thomas Brown stock rise quickly. Terrel Davis was mediocre at best @ UGA, but he ran John Elway to a ring. It will take more than talent alone for C.King to be successful in the SEC. He has alot of hard work ahead of him. I hope he meets the challenge,,, and proves his doubters wrong. Only time will tell. Ealy is the real deal !!!!!!!! FYI,, that Walker guy ,,,Herschel I think,, he too played single A ball,,, do NOT discount Ealy. Power is power,, and speed is speed at any level. Is the QB (#11, M.Ivory) from NSWR being recruited by Ga. or any SEC schools? He has a strong/accurate arm.
