Tech loses quarterback recruit; Jackson still committed
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/09/07
Georgia Tech’s decision to hire Navy coach Paul Johnson on Friday didn’t sit well with quarterback Sean Renfree of Notre Dame Prep School in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Considered the 16th-best quarterback in the nation by Scout.com, Renfree, who threw for more than 3,200 yards and 41 touchdowns this season, elected to back out of his commitment to Tech over the weekend, just hours after leading his team to a state championship victory on Friday night.
“Sean thinks Paul Johnson is a very good coach, who has a very good record,” Renfree’s father Kevin Renfree said Sunday night. “But Sean’s style is not suited to that [run-oriented] offense.
“If Sean stays healthy, he hopes to play beyond college. And being an option quarterback is not going to help him prepare for that next level.”
Kevin Renfree said his son was disappointed when Tech fired then-coach Chan Gailey two weeks ago.
“Sean liked coach Gailey a lot,” Renfree said. “There was a lot of chemistry. Sean connected with him.
“And with the Dec. 15 dead time approaching, when coaches can’t initiate contact with recruits until after the holidays, he felt he needed to de-commit now to look at other opportunities so he could set up visits in January.”
Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Northwestern and Tennessee are among the programs showing immediate interest in Renfree.
“And Sean just had contact with Nebraska on Saturday and Vanderbilt [on Sunday],” Kevin Renfree said.
Tech-bound Jackson meets Saban in Tuscaloosa
Henry County receiver Chris Jackson, who committed to Georgia Tech nearly a year ago, spent the weekend on a visit to Alabama.
But the best sales pitch from Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban failed to convince Jackson to switch his allegiance from the Jackets to Alabama.
“The visit went well,” Jackson said Sunday evening. “Alabama did a great job of recruiting me, but I’m still committed to Tech 100 percent.”
Jackson admitted that Tech’s recent decision to fire Gailey led him to schedule the visit to Tuscaloosa.
“It was all about the coaching change,” Jackson said. “They didn’t have a coach at the time I scheduled my visit last week. I get down there then find out Tech has just hired a new coach.”
Jackson hopes to meet Johnson early this week.
“I’m looking forward to meeting him,” said Jackson, who is scheduled to enroll at Tech in January. “Everybody tells me he’s a great coach and a great person to play for. I’m hoping to meet him on Monday or Tuesday.”

Aren’t all Tech updates negative? Who can even remember the last positive sports event to even come out of Tech? This is your second trip to the blue rug in three years and UGA is going to the Sugar Bowl for the third time in six years. You tell me—which program has more positive news stories? Which program would more people not affiliated with either school rather read about? Get over your inferiority complex and accept Tech sports as they are.

Wait, Renfree decommitted because there wouldn’t be enough passing and then he visited Nebraska? What a moron. Besides, he better choose a team that doesn’t play Tech otherwise he’ll get drilled on every play.

Actually Nebraska throws it around alot nowadays…if you haven’t noticed these are no longer the days of Tommie Frazier, I-Backs, and the option at Nebraska…those went when Solich was sent away…obviously, so did winning.

Yes, Renfree is a moron. ‘Nebraska’ is Spanish for “run oriented” and I guess he didn’t read where Johnson said if he ever landed at a BCS school he’d run a more conventional offense. His quitter attitude tells me he wasn’t the right guy for us anyway. Hope he ends up in Boise so we can see him during our mediocre years in the Boise Bowl.

Some people see a glass, half empty. I see it half full. I would have decommitted also if I were primarily a throwing QB. On the plus side, lots of atheletic type HS QB’s are taking a serious look at how they can go to GT and be the center of the show with all of their talents. And this state is loaded with them.

caly, you are about as ignorant about GT as the ajc. GT last played in January, 2004 for the 2003 season. Since we actually learn math to get into GT, that is 4 season ago, which translats to 2 times in the past 5 seasons. Not a great bowl, but a great location. I was there in 2004 and it was great…skiing was fantastic.
I hope that GT will go to higher ranked bowls now that Coach Johnson is on the flats.

Thats OK. anybody that don’t want to play at GT we don’t want. He’s just a kid and his daddy is acting as agent. Johnson will have enough QB before long and player will love to play here. Renfree still may change is mind after Johnson talks with his father.

Pitbull, Nebraska has run a west-coast pass-oriented offense for the past several years (albeit very unsuccessfully). The days of Nebraska running 15 times on every drive ended after Osborne and, to some extent, Frank Solich. They’ve been airing it out for quite a while now.

This is NOT negitive news for GT, but some seem to be taking it that way. Trust me, this is just news that happens everytime there is a coaching change, but it will be a positive in the end.
Were losing Renfree….WHO CARES!!!! He liked Gailey and does not feel like he is a good fit in Johnson’s system…then see ya!!
Lets see, good fits for Gailey’s system…hum..Reggie Ball…ummm…Taylor Bennett, and Renfree wants to follow in the footsteps of those guys…Oh well, go play at Duke!!!
Nesbit looks like a very good fit for Paul Johnson’s offense and…well…just a hunch, but I would bet that PJ is going to find another QB or two to run his system.
Spin it how you want, but this is a positive and there is a lot more positive to come!!!

Worst kept secret in the world re: Renfree… he’s a prototypical drop-back QB who simply won’t fit in Paul Johnson’s offense, even when PJ does adjust it to a spread-option attack. He can adjust to the personnel on hand [“I won’t put a square peg in a round hole”] but why bring in guys who don’t fit his already successful style? Renfree wasn’t a good fit, and I’m sure he’ll have success elsewhere…
I think Chris Jackson will re-affirm his commitment after meeting with PJ… and he’ll have a huge year next year catching the football from Josh Nesbitt…

Folks like Clay seems to forget that Tech is not a football factory. Tech can’t bring in a bunch of goofs because they need to be able to pass first year Chemistry. So when Tech beats teams like UGA, goes to a bowl every year, or even wins a National Title within the LAST 20 YEARS, it is considered a pretty significant accomplishment for the program. Tech will rebound.

Navy is No. 119 in Passing and beat BCS No. 31 Air Force, while Chandler Gailey was No. 102 in Passing and beat BCS No. 16 Clemson - so Sean Renfree 6’ 3” 4.5 speed in 40-yard dash ranked the No. 16 Scout.com Quarterback in the Nation quits Tech for any other school after winning his State Championship Game Friday Night. Duh. Paul Johnson doesn’t throw the football and never has. Negative story Tech fans ? Jeez, what do you want the AJ-C to do ? Tell you that you will throw the football 90 yards a game at Tech under Paul Johnson ? Tech will not. Sean Renfree is an extremely intelligent young man with great grades and solid SAT. What Tech needs is an option Quarterback - not a traditional drop-back NFL Pro-Style Quarterback, not for Paul Johnson.

It sounds like you complainers want nothing but wonderful things to be written about Tech. Here I am complaining about the complainers. Sorry. I was thinking over the weekend how now the universe of recruiting will widen for the Jackets in all areas but particularly QB…There are a lot more Qb’s out there who are not prototypes but that can play an option game that can also pass. Tech’s had many in the past including John Dewberry, Shawn Jones, Hamilton, Godsey, etc…My guess Reggie Ball would have done well in this new offense coming to Tech. Even Manly and Booker may be able to do better. The other thing like Fridge’s use of the WR’s in the wingback position will be enhanced I would guess. So people like Smith, and the other Wr’s will probably be doing some running as well as catching. We should also be able to bring in plenty of Rb’s and good lineman. Navy scored 74 points not too long ago in Novemember and 48 against Notre Dame so that offense can put up points and my guess is we will pass a lot more than Navy did out of the option. It’s going t o be exciting and a potent offense. The only concern I have is on the defensive side, in terms of hopefully we can keep a strong de fensive scheme to go with this potent offensive scheme.

You G-Tech fans aren’t thinking too clearly…In Renfree, you guys just lost your highest rated recruit(according to rivals.com) and hired a coach who utilizes the triple option. What major BCS school runs the triple option these days? There is a reason why it died out. And by the way, Im from AZ and saw Renfree lead his team to the state championship this weekend. His stats for the game…23 of 33 411 yds and 5TD’s…ya lost a good one!!

I personally thought Paul Johnson would have been a perfect fit for the Nebraska job. No one runs the triple option as well as PJ, and Cornhusker fans would have embraced his systematic offense better than Tech fans will. Still, PJ can flat out recruit to his needs, and there are plenty of triple option teams in Georgia with amazing athletes that wish to stay in the “system”. Nesbitt and Booker look like a good start.
Warning to GT fans: Paul Johnson is not known for having patience with a disgruntled fan base. He is a no-nonsense guy who takes no crap from anyone, especially media types. Success may or may not come immediately. An ACC championship could be around the corner, but you MUST have patience with this guy.

Too bad that Tech lost a recruit. It happens. Even more unfortunate is the petulant attitude of those that causes them to lash out at a young man deciding where to go to school. I’m disappointed too but don’t take it out on Renfree. Best of luck to him, particularly since neither UGA nor ACC schools look likely to be his destination. Bobby Dodd valued sportsmanship as well as winning. Be good sports about it.

I do not care if Johnson said he would run a more conventional offense. He is a run first, run second and run third coach. It does not matter what formation his team lines up in and he will not win in the ACC with that attitude. That QB did the right thing to look out for his own career. Tech will have a terrible year next year, They should have hired their Defense coordinator or Chris Hatcher. Hatcher is a fine young coach, with a very exciting and effective offense plus his Offensive coordinator the former Peach county head coach has a great offensive mind. Tech dropped the ball by hiring Johnson. Tech will suffer for years by hiring this guy after Tech eventually fires him the next coach will have to totally rebuild the offense which will take additional time. You should have kept Gailey his worst mistake was starting Reggie Ball for 4 years.

Some of y’all are living in the past. Nebraska passed for 3886 yards this year and averaged 33.4 ppg. Three yards and a cloud of dust are long gone. Nebraska’s problems were their head coach Bill Callahan acting as OC instead of letting Shawn Watson run the show. Watson will be back as OC and if Pelini can overhaul the defense, they’ll be back and Renfree could enjoy an illustrious career there.

THEN, you attack a kids Father for looking out for his kids best interest. Now, I know you nerds dont have athletic kids so let me explain how it works. Our job as parents is to help our children find the best opportunity for them to flourish if they are getting a ath. scholly. Thats how it works. It has nothing to do with meal tickets as one geek so eloquently put it. The father was extremely complimentary to Paul Johnson. So lets do this nerds, why dont we, you just keep going to class and learn how to make my assembly lines run smoother and we will stick to football, social events, and owning companies. These Dawg fans are certainly scared to death. Notice their appearance on a TECH blog? It’s good to know that the Jackets matter. Change is a wonderful thing when a program is looking to improve itself. These same Dawg fans were whelping and whining 7 years ago when Donnan was in Athens. They got a coach that some said was not “UGA material” because he lacked HC experience. These same morons are on this blog trying to convince us that a coaching change will hurt us. Don’t buy into their obvious stupidity and delusion. Make no mistake, the Dawgs are afraid, VERY AFRAID. The streak could be over now. What will they do then? After telling us all these years that Tech will NEVER beat UGA again, how will they face the embarassment when Tech wins? In reality, Dawg fans all over Atlanta are sharing the same concern. I hear it every day. The Dawgs know that the free ride with Gailey and Reggie is over. So, when you see these ridiculous Dawg posts, realize that these mutts are truly concerned and you can ignore their rhetoric. As one mutt alumnus told me: “If a Dawg isn’t concerned about the PJ hire then he doesn’t know football.” Looks like that Dawg fan was right; conversely a lot of Dawg fans on this blog don’t know squat about football.

Since the AJC seems completely uninterested in reporting on Tenuta’s future… I thought I’d pass along, it appears all of Navy’s defensive coaching staff is remaining at Navy. That could signal Tech’s defensive staff will stay in place. I consider that good news (which is probably why the AJC isn’t reporting it).

Did any of you guys who think Johnson is strictly run, run, run actually watch his press conference? He specifically stated he will tweek his offense to suit the players. With the athletes we have at GT he will pass the ball and mix in the option. He will also has a better recruting pool down here. If he keep Gif it will only help our chances of landing more top notch atheletes. His talent at Navy did not allow him to pass. He had a running back for a QB so of course he ran the ball. In Hawaii, he threw the ball all over the place. He stated it will be more like UF or WVU offenses. Spread them out and exploit the defense’s weeknesses. Johnson has been around a long time and I don’t think he’s an idoit. We have more talent than Navy and PJ will use it. We have Nesbit and he can run it or throw it. I think our offense will be just fine. Once our guys pick up the offense we’ll be unbelievable. Similar to the days of Friedgen. If we can keep Tenuta, we will be awesome. I feel good things about our future.

GTForever - You are right about PJ. He has established a winning record everywhere he has gone because he is a good, adaptable coach. With the talent that Tech currently has, I believe that he is going to turn y’all in the right direction. Taylor B. can probably kiss his starting job goodbye in favor of Nesbit. If Tenuta stays, he will likely be coaching all next season with a chip on his shoulder. He’ll be looking to make D.Rad sorry that he wasn’t promoted. Don’t be surprised if he leaves Tech after next season for a Head Coach opening at a BCS program.

As a Tech fan, I love reading all the bulldog bloggers telling us how Paul Johnson’s offense will cost us players and that we will never win with him as a coach. What is truly sounds like is the punk kid on the playground that would run his mouth constantly because he was SO SCARED deep down he couldn’t make himself stop.
I am not too concerned about losing a recruit here or there because of a percieved mismatch to the coachs ‘system’. That happens no matter who your coach is (I’m sure we lost certain recruits because of Gailey’s and even Tenuta’s ‘systems’). Paul Johnson and GT will be fine and are better off getting kids who want to be at Ga Tech regardless of where the recruiting services rank them.

I think we can forget about the football program for a while and talk about basketball. How much longer is it going to take in order to recognize that Paul Hewitt is at best an average coach in the ACC. He cannot win road games, which all of the other coaches have done. It is time for him to leave Tech. It is my opinion that the coach of Georgia will have a better record than Hewitt because he is a better coach. Tech will be lucky to win the UGA game and they don’t have any Mcdonald all americans.

Too bad you did not have a blog when Tech hired Chan Gailey because we would see exactly the same comments from Tech fans about how the new coach is going to turn Tech around and the Dawg Nation should be very afraid. I wish Tech would turn around its program so we could go back to having exciting Ga/Tech games. Tech has fallen way down on the list of rivalries for the Dawgs. Folks, that ain’t a rivalry, in a rivalry both teams win sometimes.

Tech is gonna be a lot better with Johnson. How can you say that we won’t be. Gailey was a horrible COACH. He was good at recruiting but our players never got any better in the system (on offense)… And Renfree, who cares. We already had a run oriented offense, but obviously we threw it when we had to (our receivers just never caught any passes). Johnson will get rid of Bennett and modify his option offense to more of a spread-option like UF or WV(and we have a running QB). …and by the way, a West Coast offense is run heavy and it limits the passing game to short routes, which is nothing like Renfree’s offense in high school.
—>UGA better watch out, because the spread is almost unbeatable, and i’m 90% sure that’s the offensive system Tech is gonna get from Johnson.

Nebraska fired Bill Callahan so they will be going back to a run oriented offense. Tom Osborne is the AD. He has even offered kids scholarships on his own because Pelini is still at LSU until after the BCSCG. Osborne will have a huge influence on the program, the west coast offense left with Callahan. So, you morons who say Nebraska will throw all the time, pick up a newspaper besides the AJC, and realize that they made a coaching change similar to what Tech did.

That talk is funny of the D “drilling the QB every down”…Tentua’s D sacked Stafford ONE time and that was on the first series, other than that he had a field day torching Tenuta’s one-dimensional defense en route to SEVEN IN A ROW.

JFC people, get over yourselves with this talk of labelling the kid a quitter. I remember making the decision to come to Tech and play sports as an 18 year old and it was a very personal one. As a former Tech student athlete, I take offense to the way you guys are talking about this kid. He is 18, making a decision that will impact the REST OF HIS LIFE, regardless of whether he one day makes it to the NFL. He is from Arizona, would be leaving all of his family and travelling half way across the country. He felt a personal connection to Gailey and liked and respected him and is now reconsidering since the reason he chose to go to school half way across the country is no longer here.
You are grown men (well, age wise at least) for the most part and getting in a huff over the decision an 18 year old is making about where to go to school and play football? Get over yourselves.
And knowing Paul Johnson a little bit I can tell you that if this kid ever plays against Tech, he will be treated like a competitor and nothing more. There is not, has never been and never will be any of the classless type of actions some people here are advocating of “drilling him every play” simply because he chose to go to a different school after we fired our coach.
The reality of collegiate athletics is that the coach, for the most part, is the program and you commit to the coach and his system. When you change coaches you lose players that had commited to that system and you gain players that would have never commited to that system.

If Renfree wanted a pass-oriented offense, why was he looking at GaileyTech ? If it hadn’t been for our running game we would’nt have won any games over the past 5 years. When was the last time Gailey and his QB’s passed Tech to a win ?

He’ll adjust to the players, and will run an offense similar to West Virginia’s, who ran all over UGA a few years back. but I guess UGA fans are pretty dumb, since they think that if you don’t play for your conference title, you should still play for the national title. morons.

With four turnovers to help them. PJ is a Great coach that will leave for a real team in a real conference within a few years and you will be back to has-been pro coaches that cant recruit any better than Chan did. Look nerds, we dont like to make fun of you. We try not to. But then your QB goes and wears a teletubbies costume, you players carry around garbage bags of pot, reggie ball takes his degree…wait, his GTU education and gets a job at a carwash. we dont want to laugh, we just cant help it. Now, some stupid geek is going to call me a redneck, which I am not, say something about fries, which not only have I not made since I was 16, I dont even eat, or, he will say something about me drinking in his stadium. When you have some nerd encouraging fans to say the hell with Georgia dont talk to me about class. I wont even mention the “class” of the super nerds in the endzone. Somebody get me some water. I am laughing too hard for my own good. PS super nerds, we arent scared. We invite good rivalries, very much unlike what we have had with your team for a very long time. A rivalry game is fun, a nerd beating is just funny.

I went to high school with Sean and i actually played football with him. Georgia Tech lost a great quarterback when they hired Paul Johnson. While at the championship game he was laying in passes similar to the way leinart was while at USC. Another thing you dont realize is that Pete Carroll has been sending him a letter everyday for almost two months. I think that alone can go to show how good a player is. It sucks that you lost him but you need a quarterback that is better suited in a run offense. Good luck Tech.

When those of you understand how the offence works, and the players tech has now that will fit well into it will then understand how good of a coach this guy is for us.
I have never been fond of the defence coach at tech but maybe with this style of offence it might work out for the defence also, And Im sure some of you will say we rank high in defence when the truth is and always has been live by the blitz die by the blitz, ask a guy by the name of Glanville.
Look for a qb change, im pretty sure of that, I think we have a better suited qb for his offence.
The 3 good backs tech will have will fit well into the run, this will open the pass up big time.
Like I said those of you who know football know what a good choice this is, those of you who are just fans well you have your doubts, and you georgia fans I wish the best in your bowl game but if it comes down to a shot of you going to a big bowl game next year when you are about to play us, well its not looking good for you.
I might have to eat my words but look for tech to be really good with this system, And if not we could always lower the GPA and get more players like GEORGIA GETS and thats all I have to say about that.

Don’t flatter yourself. I NEVER go onto the tech message boards. Today, I was on the UGA page and simply clicked on the Recruitment link.
PJ is a good hire for Tech. He’ll tailor the offense to the players and, so, of course he’ll throw the ball more than he did at Navy.
He might sneak a win against the Dawgs every so often but don’t expect the tables to turn completely.

Ted and XXXX, hit the “post button” just once please.
Why would Renfree want to play for Gailey anyway? Gailey has no history, at least at Tech, of developing promising QB material. Take Reggie Ball for instance. He was a sensation as a freshman, but a dunce his last two years. Blame the coach for not making him better over 4 years. And did Taylor Bennett get better this year as the season wore on? No. He actually got a little worse.
Same could be said for receivers. Calvin Johnson had enough raw talent that he didn’t need Gailey. And Gailey under utilized him to boot. What did the other receivers do? Did any of them other than CJ go pro? The crop of receivers this past season were embarrassingly poorly coached, making Bennett look that much worse.
And did you ever wonder why Steven Threet transferred? He was the hot shot QB from Michigan who enrolled last January after graduating from high school early. He spent six months with Gailey and left. I just wonder if he figured out that he wasn’t going to develop into a pro prospect under Gailey.
Funny, Renfree would be better off under Johnson than Gailey. But I were him and could play for Pete Carroll, that’s the way I would go.
Too many high school athletes go where they get a “warm fuzzy” feeling from the coaching staff, not necessarily where their talent will be developed. Case in point, Renfree.

It’s not a negative when a player that doesn’t fit your system decommits. The father didn’t present it as a negative assessment of GT’s new coach. Renfree probably made the right decision and Tech has a really good QB for Johnson in JN.

PJ is going to be a great coach for us. We will start slow, but will eventually get back up to speed. Renfree would have been a good addition to our team, but face it….he’s gone. We will move on. Realisticaly, we are not going to beat the mutts for at least two more years. After that, it should be open season.
I wish fellow fans would quit using the recruit/admin standards. Every time I hear that it sounds defeatist. Crying about our admin standards didn’t prohibit us from having good teams in the past. Are all good players that stupid?
We have had some bad years. OK, accept it and move on. Good luck PJ and I hope you get us some quality wins.

I am so glad to hear at least one Techie give up on the admin standards. You are completely correct. When you gripe about your standards, it by default means that you are not a viable matchup against the mighty DAWGS!
Not only will we take the nerds down in the next two years but also the next three. Thanks to CMR we keep reloading every year while you can’t keep recruits that have already commited.
Face it,at the end of the day GT cannot compete with UGA anymore. The ACC is down too. Get ready for average seasons and more blue fields or Nuts Bowls while we are in the BCS Bowls.

Let the kids do whats in their best interest - I’m sure all of you (and myself included) did that very same thing when we were 17 and 18. If you say you didn’t, your kidding yourself.
And to clarify the situation mentioned earlier about Nebraska. They retained Watson their O Coordintor and their receivers coach too. They must be keeping some passing elements if they are keeping those two. They also will likely keep the some of the passing offense intact, considering they are returning (starter) Joe Ganz who has 3 years of West Coast Offense under his belt, not to mention several single game NU passing records.

I have had this discussion with other Techies about the admins. One guy even dared me to post my GPA and SAT! Guess he was in the admin office.
You lost a good QB. So what! I would look toward trying not to lose games. You seem to be proficient at that. I sincerely hope that PJ can turn Tech back into at least a top tier ACC team. As much as I enjoy stomping GT every chance we get, I would like to get some national recognition for beating them. They are a drag on our schedule ranking.
Good luck filling your stadium next year. Can’t wait for my 3 ticket package in ‘09. Love to see us outnumber the Techies on the Flats.
