Dennard ready for the Dome and scouts

Published on: 12/04/07

Wilcox County defensive back Alphonzo Dennard will put his athleticism on display at 9 a.m. on Friday when the Patriots face Athens Academy in a Class A semifinal contest.

Dennard, who is considering Alabama, Clemson and Troy, has made a pledge to avoid getting caught up in the glamour associated with playing inside the Georgia Dome.

“I’ve just got to go out there and play my game,” he said. “I know there will be a lot of college coaches out there. But you’ve just got to go out there and be level-headed.”

Recruiting is currently on the backburner for Dennard.

“Right now, I’m just trying to get a state championship ring,” he said. “After the football season is over, I’ll worry about recruiting.”

Dennard has an official visit set up at Troy during the weekend of Jan. 11.

He is being recruited by Clemson and Troy as a receiver, while the Crimson Tide likes him as a defensive back.

Route names five

Stephenson cornerback Destin Route, who briefly committed to Marshall earlier this year, is now targeting a January commitment.

“I’m undecided right now,” Route said Tuesday evening. “My top five, in no particular order, is Georgia Southern, UAB, Memphis, Texas Southern and Tuskegee.

“And I’m still looking at Marshall. I’m sitting up visits right now.”

Chase Thomas is the most classless player I’ve ever met. He finds funny to use profanity directed toward not only football players, but band members, also there are better players with shorter necks and they don’t need steroids either.

Everybody cusses…and you talking trash about him on the internet where everyone can see it is really classless. He wouldn’t be soo light if he were on steroids. I hope he comes to Auburn where people won’t talk trash about him.

Hey TDuggs, I’m guessing you’re one of the band members? Jokes aside though, what kind of weasel throws a high school kid under the bus, accusing him of cussing when he’s not here to defend himself. Furthermore, how dare you accuse a hardworking kid, an amateur athlete, of taking steroids?? It’s outrageous.

Being a Raider fan myself I have cussed at our band. They are worthless, play at the wrong time of the game, do not support the football program. Think they own the stadium. Get it through your skull that other than band parents who sit on their hands the entire game, no one attends the game to watch the band, they are there to watch football. The MLK band was awesome, they supported the team, played at the right time and got everyone on their side of the field pumped up.

As far as Chase and steroids are concerned, you are delusional as well. He is 6’4” and weighs 210 lbs. If he took steroids he would weigh 240-250. I also know him pretty well and their is no way he would do that. He will have to gain a substantial amount of weight however when he gets to college.

Tdug would be correct. 1) Everyone does not cuss Gabe. I don’t in fact. Call me a liar and you would be wrong. Generalizing is how stereotypes start, and stereotypes are why people don’t recognize great people because they assume stereotypes are right. Way to go. 2) He actually is classless. To cuss at a band member is classless. If anything band members get not enough credit for what they do. It is a lot harder than it looks, and they prepare just as much if not more than the football game, but when gametime comes, no one will support them or care. He chooses to cuss at the most unappreciated group in the school. I would call that classless, but that is just me. 3) Chase is not as light as it says. Walk next to him and tell me he only weighs 210. That is a lie. 4) Please explain to me how someones head could be smaller than their neck without the use of steroids, or having a birth defect. 5) Please tell me Rick, how do you know that Chase is a “hardworking kid”. Are you his best friend? He seems to perform on the field, but did you see his stats in the Harrison game? 1 tackle and 1 sack when other players on his team had 5 tackles or more. Yeah he is amazing, isn’t he? 6) Why would you ever want a player as cocky as Chase,(talk to him for a minute and see if he isn’t cocky”, at your college? Going into something that you are the best usually turns into failure. Look at some of the underdog victories in college football this year, and tell me that the losing team didn’t go into the game thinking they were the best. Oh, and he must be amazing since he defended North Gwinnett so well tonight. 31 points scored, if i remember correctly. Where was he to stop them? 7) In case no one realizes, or knows, there are several high school students that do, in fact, take steroids. I know its scary that the usage starts so early but it is true. Call the papers, High Schoolers do occasionally take steroids. 8) (this is the part where i add my complaints about Walton, enjoy) Walton Football was classless at all the games i went to this year. At the Harrison game a player got hurt to the point that the ambulance had to get him off the field. The majority ( I won’t say entire so that i don’t generalize) of the Walton crowd remained standing. Their band was up the entire time, the student section well you know they didn’t sit and the announcer continued talking while the ambulance was on the field( I think the sponsors would be ok with people being courteous to an injured player). I would not call that classy. Also the boys that paint up for the games, run on the track for every point or decent play and do push-ups is definitely classy and awesome. I wish our team did that… no i actually don’t. I would like to say that I enjoyed writing this and would love to continue arguing with anyone on here who would like to believe that I am wrong.

The last thing we need is some band-loving nerd on here trying to roast on football players. You think you have to prepare hard for a game? What do yall do, march around in the heat all summer, practice a piece over and over again? Trying runnin around in pads instead of little pirate uniforms all summer, getting your mouthpiece knocked out. There is no way you can say a band member practices and prepares more for a football game. Band’s just a bunch of suckers and blowers, and obviously this one guy JDog is mad because most likely during a big play, Thomas turned around and told them to shut up. Quit whining just cause some “big” football player hurt your feelings. And as for the “neck being bigger than the head”, it’s called working out. And I know you’re going to write back and be like, “Actually, I do work out, blah blah blah”, but if u did, you would know A) you’re exaggerating, and B) it’s possible to build up to where they look disproportional. So quit whining and maybe try and get out on the field and play to shut him up. You can talk on here all day, but why don’t you say it to his face? People that come on here to b** about class need to look at themselves. You’re mad bc a band dude will never get his name up in the lights like Chase Thomas.

JDog-

a.He cusses, yet you come online and attack a whole school of people you don’t even know, and he’s the unclassy one?

b.You are accusing him of taking steriods just because he’s a little above average height? He’s very strong, but he is not toned enough to be taking steriods. He is also smart. He has above a 3.75 GPA at Walton, which is hard. Do you have any prove? Or are you just attacking a good player from a school you obviously hate?

c.How can you deny his skill level? If he wasn’t good, we wouldn’t be looking at this article. He broke Walton’s record for sacks, also. Seems you didn’t do your homework.

d.The boys who paint up are called Raider Boys. They get the crowd hyped up and lead them in cheers because our cheerleaders aren’t the best, and we like to support our team. How is that “unclassy”?

Seems to me you just hate Walton Raiders in general. If they’re such bad kids, then how come they’re SAT scores are so high. They also just won another National Blue Ribbon.

Alright you want statistics on why Chase Thomas really is’nt that good. Yes he broke Walton’s record for sacks and etc., but have you looked at the level of competition (or lack there of). About half of Walton’s games the past two years have come against the crap of AAAAA. Walton played 10 games the past two years against mighty powerhouse teams like Wheeler, Lassiter, Sprayberry, Kell, and Pope.(For those who can’t tell, that’s sarcasm about those “powerhouse” teams)I think there is an easy case to be made that Chase Thomas padded his stats against teams that might be better suited to play Pop Warner football. There were only a few real AAAAA football teams that Walton matched up against this season. Those teams would be Roswell, North Gwinnett, Harrison, and M.L. King. As I recall, the only time I remember hearing his name specifically praise for his performance in one of those games was when Walton beat Roswell and he had something like 3 sacks. (Side note: A lesser known player from Wheeler had a huge game in an upset against Roswell a year ago. His name was Corey Tower and he had touchdown runs of 92 and 55 yards, yet I don’t see his offers from D1 schools: Sorry that was random). Chase Thomas was held to 1 tackle in the game against Harrison(yes I’m ignoring the fact that it was a sack.) His leadership on defense also led to the impressive game against… Oh wait that was North Gwinnett destroying Walton in the AAAAA semis Sat…. yeah that game sure proves that he’s a winner(another side note: How does North Gwinnett have no one as “blue chip quality” as Chase Thomas yet still roll his team up to the tune of 31-7?) Truly Chase Thomas is great( more sarcasm).

His SAT scores are amazing too…not really. You also don’t know his class schedule, P.E. classes are an easy 4.0. Also to paint up if fine. To go on the field and do push-ups has crossed the line. Also, i am built to where i could play football if i want. I choose not to because of people like Chase Thomas. Oh and if you want a real challenge, play a wind instrument and run a mile at the same time, playing the right notes and everything. I know that you can’t, because it takes a smart person to play an instrument period, and it is a lot more physical than you would believe. Stop all the bull crap about how hardcore football is. Any meat headed idiot can learn how to play the game.

No matter what you think about whoever, this whole conversation is inappropriate. This is not the time or the forum to have this discussion. Shame on you for bashing any young person - band or football player - on the internet in such a public fashion. Chase is a great young man with a bright future ahead of him, and i hope he never even sees this conversation. Band kids work hard too, in their own way. Cut it out, folks. This is just nor right.

A Common side effect of long-term steroid use is head enlargement. Barry Bonds was said to have gone up a couple hat sizes (and shoe sizes) during the Pittsburgh-San Fran transition years.
