Tech slips with North Cobb’s Roark; Smith remains undecided
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 11/28/07 10:30 PM
Latest news
Georgia Tech is no longer a front-runner in the recruitment of North Cobb quarterback Matt Roark.
“I was still considering them up until coach [Chan] Gailey got fired,” Roark said Wednesday evening. “Now, I’m just waiting to see what happens there.
“Right now, I’m considering Illinois, Kentucky, Oregon and Wake Forest.”
Roark, who took an official visit to Oregon earlier this fall, will travel to Illinois on Dec. 8 and Kentucky one week later.
The 6-foot-6, 190-pound Roark figured last week that Gailey’s status as Tech’s head coach was hanging in the balance.
“It was kind of a surprise, but I had heard all last week that if Georgia Tech loses to Georgia he would be fired,” he said. “So I was kind of aware that it could happen.”
Academics will dictate Smith’s choice
For Mays defensive end Bernard Smith, academics will be a major factor in where he plays college football.
“I’m looking a majoring in sports medicine with a minor in business,” Smith said. “So I’m looking at Florida, Clemson, Virginia and schools like that.
“Now if I was to change my major, and remember at first I wanted to be an engineer, then Georgia Tech and Auburn would be the top two choices.”
Smith, who briefly committed to Ole Miss earlier this year, was scheduled to attend last weekend’s Florida-Florida State game.
Instead, he wound up at Bobby Dodd Stadium as a guest of Tech to watch the Jackets play rival Georgia. Smith was among the group of recruits Gailey spoke with prior to kickoff.
“I really didn’t see [the firing] coming,” Smith said. “It’s hard enough to go to a team that’s rebuilding, but it’s even harder with a team that’s rebuilding with a new coach.
“But Tech is still up there for me. First of all, it’s home. And I have a couple of friends who will be there.
“I’m still waiting until January to make my decision.”
Anderson waiting to see if Tech offers
A week ago, Habersham Central cornerback Josh Anderson believed a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech was within his grasp.
But following this week’s coaching change, Anderson is left wondering what might have been.
“I really don’t know if I was close or not to an offer,” he said. “But I do know [Gailey and his staff] liked me.
“I’m going to take my time and see what happens and if they’re still interested in me when the new coach comes onboard.”
Anderson, whose favorites are Furman, Penn, Princeton and Georgia Tech, had hoped to see the Gailey era with the Jackets continue for years to come.
“I was really disappointed to hear about him being fired, to be honest,” Anderson said. “He’s a great guy, a really good coach and a great person.
“It’s kind of unfortunate.”

Why do all of the blog titles regarding GT recruits sound so negative? It seems like the reporters are trying to create a negative vibe for all GT recruits!
Every quote I have heard from the committed players and the potential recruits is the same. Almost every player is taking a wait and see approach. They are still considering GT and are waiting to find out who the next head coach will be for GT. This is a very smart and prudent decision. This situation could take a turn in a very good direction for GT and the recruits.
It is very much like the liberal media trying to initiate a recession by constantly reporting and spinning all of the facts in a negative light.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just report the facts and stop trying to create news. You guys are obviously trying to initiate a backlash of some sort.
How about a truthful title like: GT recruits taking a wait and see approach or GT holds on to all of their commitments even with Gailey gone.
Good life lesson for everyone: Try taking a positive approach in life rather than trying to be so freak’n destructive and negative.

Tech has seen a lot of negative publicity recently. It’s unfortunate, but going through a situation like this is never easy, and to expect positive media attention is asking a lot.
Hopefully the recruits will see that Tech has a lot to offer and that a coaching change will not diminish the quality experience they can have here. I saw Roark play in the North Cobb-Marietta game, and he looked great. I think Tech could use a talented athlete like him.
Hopefully we’ll offer Anderson a scholarship too; our secondary needs a boost.

GT Grad…Jeff Hood doesn’t tell you how to design bridges or whatever it is you do. I would refrain from telling editors how to do their job.
It seems from the information provided that Georgia Tech did indeed slip with Roark, and that Smith is, in fact, undecided. That sounds pretty truthful to me. Maybe the headline after the Georgia game should have read, “Georgia Tech Scores Twice, Georgia Happens to Score A Couple More.” After all, it’s positive.

I hope these kids still are interested down the road here but where to go to school would be my priority then football. Also, on the football front Tech was plenty patient with the Gailey era in terms of loosing to Ga. for 6 years in a row. I believe the longest was 4 prior to this streak for one coach. Tech also paid him a lot of funds. Recruiting overall with some exceptions has not been a strong point the last 6 or so years. Hopefully this year will not be a wash recruitingwise, but this area should pick up substantially in the years ahead.

Actually, GT’s recruiting was finally starting to come around under Gailey. The last couple of three years have had us in the top 20 classes in the country. If you ask me, that’s pretty good for a notedly difficult school with a very limited selection of education concentrations.

Bluezilla… “I would refrain from telling editors how to do their job” That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on one of these blogs. Yeah, don’t give your opinion, don’t disagree with this “professional” who wrote this negative piece. Just shut up and read it. Moron.

GT is in a better position post-Gailey.
Recruits -from a purely football perspective- should be more excited with the prospect of being more nationally recognized and respected.
7-5 and UGA’s whipping boy is not a great recruitment record. And believe me NOBODY LIKES LOSING.

If AJC reporters were interested in finding a positive spin, they should ask if some of the undecided recruits that had Tech in the mix before, might be more interested with the impending coaching change. I am sure that a Muschamp, Fisher, Cutcliff, or other hire might actually BRING recruits.
I doubt that a Hatcher, Johnson, or other 1AA hire would do the same, but even they might create renewed interest that keeping Gailey would not have done. I understand that Navy is not 1AA, but you get my point.

Why are you guys concerned about Smith, Roark and Anderson? Chances are that whomever the new coach is wouldn’t even offer these guys anyway. Roark, maybe, he is a three star recruit. Smith, a two star recruit, doubtfully and Anderson who rates no stars at all certainly not. If you want to comptete with Georgia you will have to do better.

A winning record every year and a bowl game every year is not a bad resume for any Head Coach; ESPECIALLY, for one who was fired! If you asked a candidate for the GT job to sign a contract promising to win at least 7 games every year and, in turn, be eligible for a Bowl game each year, do you think he would be so quick to sign? I love Georgia Tech, but everyone in the country knows how difficult it is academically and that the coaches have to recruit very talented young men. Best of luck in the search.

I can’t believe you guys fired Gailey!! Yeah he was 0-6 against UGA but you’ll never find someone who will consistently beat UGA. THe best Tech can hope for is an 8-4 season. Consider it a GREAT season if you get to 9-3 (once in a blue moon). Thinking that your going to get a coach that can come in and deliver 10 win seasons is just a fantasy!! Then again, you do play in the ACC so I guess anything is possible!!

I’m sick and tired of tech fans using the academic excuse for sucking in football. It sure doesn’t hurt tech when they are recruiting dumb as a rock basketball players, does it? How come paul hewitt is able to haul in top notch recruits for basketball? Are these top basketball recruits smarter than football players? I had a couple of good friends that played on GT’s national championship team and believe me they weren’t rocket scientist. Bobby Ross didn’t have any problems recruiting good football players during his tenure. Just admit that gailey was bad for the program and move on, quit making excuses. I can’t believe that some tech fans defend gailey for being mediocre. Remember tech fans that 7 wins in this era is not as impressive as years past because of expanded scheduling. I’m a UGA fan but I’m actually happy for tech that they have an opportunity to find a new coach that might improve the program. I happen to think it is good for the state of GA to have two top notch programs if tech can find the right coach.

Gee Red and Black, you should listen to your own advice. “Guys- if your going to judge everyone’s spelling…please make sure your spelling your words correctly.” It should be “Guys- if you’re going to judge everyone’s spelling…please make sure you’re spelling your words correctly.” I hope you’re a Tech fan just calling themselves Red and Black, otherwise you’re an embarassment to us. Why does anyone bother with grammar corrections anyway. It’s an informal blog! Of course they’re going to be typos and errors. Deal with it. That being said, it seems like the recruits who are taking a wait and see are choosing between Tech and other mediocre programs. If you ever expect to beat Richt and the Dawgs, you guys need to be competing with Bama, Florida, Tennessee, FSU and Georgia for recruits, not Furman, Penn, and Princeton.

There is nothing really positive to say about your coach being fired and losing to UGA 6 times in a row and 14 of the last 17..plus only winning 9 games once and usually 7..Gailey did win some big games against Auburn, miami(not so much anymore), and played well against Florida St..but you cant lose to NC state, Virginia, get blown out at home against several teams and expect to have great recruits or any real “positive” stories to sugar-coat your situation..it is what it is..GT has some good talent, but you are not deep enough to win big right now..The ACC is weak right now and next year could still be open with VT losing lots of starters, Miami is terrible and FSU has no identity anymore.. BC is losing all of its seniors and 5yr seniors, so look at next year..but I doubt the streak against UGA will end for at least a couple years..

Guys it’s not the negative spin by the AJC reporters or the firing of Gailey that is preventing Tech from recruiting 5 star HS football players. I recently sent out a survey to more than 1,850 HS football players to see where Tech ranked on their list of choices. In the survey, I asked… “If Georgia Tech is not in your Top 50, please state the reason why.” Of the 1,473 responses, 82.46% stated that Tech’s legendary Tickle Piles were a put-off and that type of male bonding was forbidden by the Good Book.

How can you report good news when there is none? Commitments are wavering based on a coaching change. What do you want: “Georgia Tech very excited and very optimistic about diminishing chances on recruits” or “GT gains another scholarship! (due to recruit de-committing)

I suggtest Tech go to N.J. and scoop up a few refugees ala the UGA running back, and recruit very vigorously in Fla. The ACC will be it’s weakest since it’s newest formation of the conference…Now is Tech’s time…Have you guys ever thought of the “Fridge” some people at Maryland have been screaming for a change. It appears to me that you can’t win with two & three star recruits no matter who the coach is, Tech’s fan apathy also turns off prospective recruits… pghman

I agree with the firing of Gailey. He was not living up to Tech’s expectations. Realistic expectations or not, they pay for the coach and should be happy with who is running the program. As long Tech gets kids in Georgia they will be able to compete with UGA and others. Georgia HS is very good and produces enough talent to go around. I do not buy into that whole “stars rating” scale. David Pollack was a 2 star and he was pretty darn good college defensive end.

There’s too much exaggerating going on in this blog. “GT Grad,” there’s nothing overtly negative about the column title. “Gary,” Georgia Tech isn’t (regularly) recruiting players whom they just have to compete w/ Furman, Princeton, Penn, etc for. That’s ONE player that was HOPING he’d get offered a scholarship. Sometimes coaches/recruiters see potential in players that others don’t see. “82Dawg” & “Tjs,” if you know anything about recruiting, then you know almost every major program must have a number of “3-star” recruits to have a full successful recruiting class (i.e. Georgia has 12 3-star committs for it’s current #2 Scout ranking). The key to be near the top is to have some 4-star, & maybe a couple 5-star, recruits in there also. That’s where Tech had fallen short in recent years, until last year, especially in comparison to Georgia.

That said, the lose-loose thing is outta control. It is over the top. Almost like the grammer-grammar deal.

Banishment from blogging, along with a short prison term, should be mandatory for “loose and grammer ” errors.

Unfortunitly a friend of mine who works in the athletic dept at Tech informed me that Donnan is looking like a real possibility. He said the reasoning is because of the amount of money they are still paying Gailey, they don’t have much to offer the new coach.

Hey Big Bug, Matt Roark would probably help your sorry team out since there are NO playmakers on the nerds squad! I bet your are one of those loser Tech fans who thinks that every year just might be their year, but it’s not. Maybe better recruits will look at Tech if they actually win more that 7 games a year. And how funny it is that after last year the nerds were so happy that Reggie Ball was leaving, but he actually helped you to 9 wins last year. I’m also tired of hearing the Tech players say how much they hate Georgia. Taylor Bennett is not even from Georgia and he talks like he has grown up in Atlanta and watched his team get beat year in and year out. I guess I would hate a team if I got beat like Tech does! You guys will always be average so just accept it. No coach who is worth anything will want to go to Tech.

Ga. Tech is a fine academic school but they have no academic requirement for football or basketball players I went to school with a player that made a score of 4 on his final in algebra and he had no problems at tech and how about the basketball player that was a janitor at a high school up north
