Tech still in the mix for Thompson; Jackets to offer Bass?

Published on: 11/11/07 8:40 PM

Thomasville’s Brandon Thompson, considered the fourth-best defensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com, continues to show strong interest in five programs.

“I feel good about all the schools,” said Thompson, who is considering scholarship offers from Clemson, Georgia Tech, LSU, Ohio State and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-2, 295-pound Thompson plans to travel to Clemson on Saturday when the Tigers host Boston College.

Thompson, who visited Tech earlier this year, said he’d enjoy the opportunity to play for Jackets coach Chan Gailey.

“I’d love to play for him,” Thompson said. “He’s a real nice guy.”

Thompson, who visited Ohio State during the first weekend of Nov., didn’t appear stunned after learning that the Buckeyes lost in Columbus on Saturday to Illinois.

“Any team can lose,” he said. “I guess it was just their time to lose.”

After admitting that he’s confided in very few people over where he will play college football, Thompson refused to set a timetable on when he might commit.

He did rule out delaying his decision until signing day in February.

“Oh, it won’t be that long,” he said.

Bass visits Southern Miss

Stockbridge quarterback Tyler Bass spent the weekend on an unofficial visit to Southern Miss.

Other candidates to receive an unofficial visit from Bass include Louisville, Purdue and Western Kentucky.

“I want to see these places and see the campus first and, if I like it, go back on an official visit,” Bass said.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound could be on the verge of receiving an offer from Georgia Tech.

“I just got an e-mail from [Georgia Tech recruiting coordinator] coach [Giff] Smith,” Bass said. “He wants me to contact him.”

Bass hinted that he might pull the trigger on a commitment to Tech, if the Jackets offer.

“Georgia Tech is a very good school academically,” Bass said. “And the thing that will weigh on my college degree is the name of the school on the diploma.

“I know a degree from Georgia Tech carries a lot of weight, not only in the United States, but around the world.

“And they have a great football team. I’ve been going to games there since I was young.”

Tennessee and Ole Miss in the lead for Reeves

Stone Mountain receiver Charles Reeves Jr. said Sunday night he will likely commit to Florida, North Carolina, Ole Miss or Tennessee.

Reeves labeled the Volunteers as his front-runner, with Ole Miss closing ground quickly.

“I’m going to the LSU-Ole Miss game [in Oxford] this weekend on an unofficial visit,” Reeves said. “My first official visit will be to Ole Miss in January.

“I want to save my official visits until after the season because I’ll get to spend more personal time with the coaches then.”

sounds like they would rather get a good education as well. rather than just worry about being put out on the field.

UGA will push for a national championship next season. That would be the 3rd year in a row that the SEC will play for the title. Yes, LSU will destroy Oregon. Look at UGA for next season. We will have an All-American QB in Mathew Stafford that will provide leadership and talent. We will have an All-American RB in Knowshon Moreno. That kid is a future 1st round pick. We have experience in the OL with 3 of the 5 being future NFL players. Trinton Sturdivant is a future All-American. Tripp Chandler is emerging as a solid TE. Our WR’s will be the most talented group that we have had in years led by All-SEC Mohamed Massaquoi. We have depth at each position, hence the offense is loaded for next season. We will miss Bradon Coutu, but we have the best HS kicker in America committed. In terms of the defense, we will be dominate if we continue to be bring energy and an aggressive approach. In the SEC, you can’t rush 4 and drop 7 on every play. The teams are too good for that. On the DL, we will have All-SEC Jeff Owens leading the way. I am really impressed with Geno Atkins. That kid is quick. The DE will emerge due to the depth that we have. At LB, we are loaded with All-SEC members Dannell “The Bullet” Ellerbe and Rennie “the Tackling Machine” Curran. We will have the best DB set in the SEC next season with All-SEC CB Asher Allen, The Prince of Coverage Prince Miller, solid C.J. Byrd, and a future All-American in Reshad Jones. Brian Mimbs has developed into an excellent punter. We are loaded with depth at every position. Throw is a top five recruiting class. That is the most talented team ever. From what I see, these kids really enjoy playing football together for UGA. In terms of recruiting, I believe we will add 24th commitment named A.J. Harmon, 25th commitment named Cordy Glenn, and 26th commitment named Zebrie Sanders. Maybe even Josh Jarboe due to some of the kids signing early.

I agree with most of what you say especially about Geno Atkins as every team we have played has had to use two OL to try and block him when he has been in the game, but another guy who hadn’t seen much action this year really impressed me Saturday. His name is Jeremy Lomax everytime you looked up Saturday he was in Auburn’s backfield disrupting and or making a sack or hit for loss. Another guy you should be aware of who hasn’t seen the field this year is Charles White and what my friend who is an assistant coach at GA tells me this guy covers from sideline to sideline and has a nose for the ball and is the big hitter we have been missing on D. Things do indeed look bright for our Dawgs especially if we get a few more of those big ole offensive linemen to come and play in the trenches for us.

Go Dawgs

Tyler Bass is right that some Tech degrees carry a lot of weight outside of the U.S. but that is because most of the students from Tech come from outside the U.S. Tech is big in Bangalore, Islamabad, and Beijing. Tech football not so much. Of course the abundance of foreign students at Tech is probably a good idea as most Tech “females” would look significantly better in a burka. And you will need that degree (well the 44% percent or less of the football players that actually get one) because, let’s face it, the NFL scouts won’t come visiting now that Calvin Johnson is gone. Unfortunately, the football players don’t get those good degrees like chemical or electrical engineering — the ones that carry a lot of weight. The football players will be working on degrees that carry as much weight as any degree, from any school, any place.

On the plus side, Tech is off probation now (right?). Don’t forget to check out the Emerald Nut Bowl — last time Tech played there they sent less than 2,00 “fans” (I hope that number didn’t include the band, but it probably did). Oh, and by the way don’t worry about coaching turnover — Coach Gailey received a vote of confidence (from the previous athletic director) — something like the fans should get used to seven wins a year tops because that was as good as it was going to get at Tech. If you want to play at Tech make sure your friends and family are free on Thursday nights because if a Tech game is televised then that will be it. On the plus side, there are always plenty of tickets available due to the 10,000 plus empty seats each game (you’d think they could sell out a tiny inadequate stadium but I’m sure the small crowds do provide a cozy feel which should remind you of your high school games [unless your high school had larger crowds]). In addition to finally being off probation, Tech also can boast that no players have been arrested for carrying a hundred pounds of pot in the last year or two.

If you make a recruiting visit don’t forget to ask about Tech’s record against UGA - both overall and over the last six years.

Dont forget about Akeem Hebron at linebacker. He potentially would have started this year at Sam and supposedly he is continuing to tear it up down in Millegeville.

Wow, so much jealousy from ugay fans. Gotta love it!

Believe it or not, some high school students actually look at everything when evaluating a college. They look at the football program, the academics, the location, the value of the diploma, and other things.

If all they wanted was to play football, drink beer, and get arrested, then yes, they go to ugay.

F Russo…believe it or not, all high school football players don’t want to play at UGA. Maybe they see a better opportunity elsewhere. Maybe they arent dog fans and want to play at a school they have always wanted to play for. Eric Berry is a Tennessee legacy as his father played there. I guess you believe that once UGA offers the scholarship will be accepted but that is not always how it works. Like I said, not everyone wants to play for UGA.

What happened with all the visits to Athens this weekend? Surpised the AJC did not even mention how they went. Wait a minute… what am I thinking? Ok, I am not surprised. Maybe they did not even know they were going on.

I think the Black & Red is going to have a harder time landing some of this guys who want immediate playing time because we ARE so good & so young. However, we are going to be a solid National Championship contender over the next three years. We are loaded and have one of the top coaches in the game.

By the way, the ACC sucks and so does Tech.

Maybe some of these kids see what happens to UGA athletes who don’t make the NFL, maybe that’s why they want to go to Tech.

Maybe they want to learn to read.

Maybe they’re sick of the UGay fans who think they have a great football tradition (how many national titles? When was the last one?) with their 8th grade education.

Maybe they are afraid of grown men who bark.

The football program: that would be UGA. The academics: Tech for engineering degrees; UGA for all other (very few Americans want to end up as a Nerd, though). The location: Athens, hands down. The value of the diploma: as noted above since most Tech football players will get no degree whatsoever, and no Tech football player will get a good Tech degree, I go with a tie. And other things: Not sure what the other things are, but here are my guesses — Social Skills - UGA; Inferiority Complex - Tech; Terrorism Skills - Tech; Acne Problems - Tech; Hot Women - UGA (duh); Star Trek trivia - Tech; jobs where the employers don’t let you meet with clients for fear of scaring them - Tech; awkwardness - Tech. Well, I guess by sheer numbers the pencil-necked geeks do come out ahead on the “other things”.

Oh, and don’t think that constantly making fun of you is due to jealousy — it’s because you’re dorks.

Wozzo the Wonder Dog , nice one on the comparison. They can’t fill their stadium due to the patriot act won’t allow many of them back in the country. I went to one of their(tech) games last year and it looked like an Pakistani soccer match. Holly Turban.

Again, the continual anti-Tech posts screams of jealously…. it really does. Thanks for the continuing compliments.

Bottom line, IMHO, regarding recruits is that they deserve what ever school they ultimately select.

BTW ugay idiots: Richt has proclaimed the Tech-GA game to be red-out. He wants you idiots to take off your shirts during the game so that your red necks glow. LOL!!!!

I’ve seen it happen plenty. Yeah but ya’ll are loyal to your doggies. HOW ABOUT THE BLACKMAN KID AT LINEBACKER FOR AUBURN. ANOTHER GEORGIA KID WHO SKIPED UGA. UGA HEAVILY RECRUTED HIM BUT HE WENT TO AUBURN SO HE COULD BE ON A LOSER. DID YOU SEE THE BLOCK SUTHERLAND PUT ON HIM SPRINGING BROWN FOR THAT 50 + YARD RUN. IN FACT DID BLACKMAN DO ANYTHING SATURDAY. COULD HAVE BEEN A WINNER AT UGA SON. IN FACT YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LOOSER AND STAYED HOME AND PLAYED AT GT.

It’s actually refreshing to see a few UGA fans write about recruiting rather than making blanket judgements and assumptions based on absolutely nothing about GT. Every time one of you other morons barks about GT harboring terrorists, or having no girls, or being star wars geeks, you’re only making yourself look like the stupid, classless, redneck clowns that UGA fans have become famous for being. I’m looking forward to Nov 24th because I think it will be a good game, like it has the last few years. Here’s to a good game and hopefully a GT win!
