Jones commits to Alabama; Jarboe visits Oklahoma

Published on: 11/06/07 9:53 PM

Barrett Jones, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive tackle for Evangelical Christian School in Cordova, Tenn., committed to Alabama on Monday.

“I grew up as an Alabama fan,” said Jones, who had also been considering Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. “I did my research and went to a lot of schools.

“There’s a bunch of great schools out there. But Alabama is the one I feel where I belong. So I called [Alabama] coach [Nick] Saban Monday night and told him I wanted to commit.”

Scout.com rates Jones as the 15th-best offensive tackle in the nation in the class of 2008.

Jarboe visits Oklahoma

Cedar Grove receiver Josh Jarboe was in attendance on Saturday when Oklahoma spanked Big 12 foe Texas A&M 42-14 in Norman.

“The visit was alright,” Jarboe said. “They showed me around and I talked to all of the coaches.”

Jarboe, who is considering scholarship offers from Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Tennessee, hopes to make the trek to Baton Rouge later this month with Cedar Grove teammate Xavier Avery, who recently committed to Georgia.

“Xavier and I will likely take a visit to LSU in a couple of weeks,” Jarboe said. “[Xavier] is still looking, but he’s committed to Georgia.”

Troup’s Oliver picks Central Florida

Troup offensive lineman John Oliver plans to play college football for coach George O’Leary and the Central Florida Golden Knights.

“I committed to Central Florida on Sunday morning,” said Oliver, who attended the Golden Knights’ 47-13 victory over Marshall in Orlando on Saturday.

O’Leary, a former Georgia Tech coach, and his staff made a lasting impression on the 6-foot-6, 270-pound Oliver.

“I like the honesty of the coaches,” Oliver said. “What I liked about them is they acted like they were already coaching and critiquing me. They were upfront and honest.

“Character is a big thing on the team, and it speaks real loud when you meet the players. The attitude down there, and the campus, is amazing.”

Oliver, who is projected to be a 300-pound lineman, said he’s comfortable with O’Leary’s decision to redshirt him during his freshman season.

“I’ll be a practice dummy for my first year, but I’ll get to know the system,” Oliver said.

Character and O’Leary are two words that should never appear in the same article. Fat Georgie boy and his minions are the ones who put Tech on probation by recruting players who couldn’t cut the academics and covering it up. Then he bails out for his dream job only to be foiled by his “character” being revealed when his fairy tale resume is checked. Yeah young Mr. Oliver, go play for a man of sterling character, George O’Liary.

Another big time player for the Tide… and Saban and staff are far from done… Julio Jones, William Green, Jerrell Harris, Donta Hightower, so many more expected to come. Hop aboard guys…bus is getting full… Can’t believe no mention here of the biggest commit of the day yesterday, not Barrett Jones, but DJ Fluker, 2009 TOP 100, pre-ranked rivals #18th best player in the country, 5 STAR — 6-5 260 DT, Glenn Dorsey clone, except bigger…. What a day yesterday was. BTW, Nice class UGA… Do not let Tubbs steal and of UGA’s best, b/c we all know he’ll be trying…b/c he isn’t getting any from the state of Alabama… RTR

This kid liked the honesty of O’Leary? LOL That guy is going to have a tuff time in college with that brain of his. Good luck, Oliver. We did not want you anyway. It looks like the Tech class will be finishing in the top five again, and we are emerging as the go to school for the state’s blue chippers. Go Jackets!

Now I do not have a dog in this hunt and I am not condoning what O’Leary did on his resume, but the guy has paid his pennance and is a darn good football coach. Be honest, don’t you think he could have done a better job with Willingham and the buffon they have now at Notre Dame.

Good Luck at UCF, John Oliver, you are needed bc they have some JR OL. For the Tech fans complaining of O’Leary, you should not be complaining your got Gailey didn’t you. LOL I am a UCF fan but going from ND to UCF is paying for your sins. At some point everyone who pays for and asks for must be forgiven but then you have Gailey and I understand your issues. AGAIN GOOD LUCK AT UCF John Oliver, O’Leary thinks your can be the next Patrick Brown which will be in the NFL soon so that is elite company.

i don’t understand why you all are hating on George, he brought us more success when he was here than anyone else.
He has built a good program down there in Central Florida, I saw them almost beat Texas this year. Good for him, good for Oliver, good luck bud

We’re very happy to get John Oliver. He’s coming to a CLEAN program run by GOL, who is respected and I think happy here.

The kids stay out of trouble, study, and have a collective GPA of over 3.0. The attitude is upbeat and we’re having a fine recruiting year because the athletes that visit here see it being done correctly. Football and school. Say what you want, but we’re all VERY happy with GOL.

Some of y’all Tech fans need to learn to let go. GOL brought more success to your program than you’ll ever see in a LONG time. Face it, GOL’s program is on the up-and-up down in Orlando, and Tech’s program has too many question marks to count right now. To the Oliver kid: if you were debating between Tech and UCF…you made the right choice. Good luck in your college career. GO DAWGS!!!

hey, i wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t the babe factor down at that florida school that made oliver pick them over tech.

give him a break, its all about the babes.

having o’leary coach would just be a bonus, especially compared to the other so-called coaches in that state.

You GT fans are something else. All O’Leary did was build GT into a winner and helped your school. I just love the ignorant, moronic comments on here talking about O’Leary having no honesty, etc. Every commit we’ve had in the past 3 years has said the exact same thing as Oliver, so obviously O’Leary is doing things right.

Stop being so bitter, grow up, and move on GT fans.

“GT still plays football, who would have known.”

Best comment ever on the status of GT football, maybe UCF should start offering GT commitments since they will jump ship the moment coach Tickler is fired.
