Thomasville’s Thompson visits Ohio State; Jackson visits ‘Bama

Published on: 11/05/07 10:43 PM

Thomasville defensive lineman Brandon Thompson, one of the missing jewels in Georgia Tech’s current recruiting class, remains silent on his college plans.

“He just doesn’t talk much,” Thomasville coach Richie Marsh said Monday evening.

The fourth-best defensive tackle in the nation according to Scout.com, Thompson is coming off a visit to Ohio State on Nov. 2.

“I asked if he had a good time at Ohio State and he said he did,” Marsh said. “He went by himself. His father usually goes with him on visits.”

Thompson, whose front-runners appear to be Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami and Florida, visited Tech on Sept. 29.

“I think he’s got an interest in Georgia Tech,” Marsh said. “And just from knowing everything, I’m sure he’s still considering Clemson. That was from the get go.

“I’m sure he’ll wait until the end of the season to see how everything unfolds with how teams finish and what coaches stay and what coaches don’t stay.”

Griffin’s Jackson to be in Athens on Saturday

Georgia-bound defensive end Toby Jackson of Griffin continued his tour of SEC schools by attending Saturday’s LSU-Alabama contest in Tuscaloosa.

“I enjoyed myself,” Jackson said. “I like Alabama a lot. They have great coaches, a good stadium and a good environment. It was an all-around good visit.”

Jackson spent time at the game with Riverdale lineman Cordy Glenn, who is expected to accept a scholarship offer from Alabama or Georgia.

“Cordy and I got to talk a lot,” Jackson said. “We sat together at the game. We’ve known each other for a while from playing against each other.

“He didn’t say where he was leaning. He’s just going to take his time.”

Jackson plans to be in Athens on Saturday when the Dogs host Auburn. He is expected to attend the Alabama-Auburn game later this month.

“I’m still with Georgia, but I’m weighing my options,” Jackson said. “I never know what might happen.

“If I had to sign tomorrow, I would be going with Georgia. But I’ve got until February.”

Washington County’s Watts holds offer from Tech

Washington County junior linebacker Brandon Watts, who has an offer from Georgia Tech, is being heavily recruited by three SEC powers.

“Auburn, Georgia and Florida are showing interest in me,” Watts said.

Watts considers himself a fan of Tech coach Chan Gailey.

“He’s a good coach,” Watts said. “I liked him when I went to some of the camps at Georgia Tech.”

Watts figures he will wait until his senior season to make a commitment.

“Tech is out front right now, but it’s kind of open,” he said.

I hope Brandon does not pay attention to all this talk of Coach Gailey leaving Georgia Tech. He should not and will not leave. With Chan at least we are assured of 7 great Tickle Piles a year and personally I like going to Bowl Games no one has heard of. That way there is no pressure to win.

Chan Gailey is a good guy, but if you have read Furman Bisher’s column; may not be back at Tech next year— or the next.

As for Nick Saban— how long will he really stay with Alabama? I mean, LSU, the Dolphins, and now alabama— all within what 3 years? What’s next: Michigan, Nebraska???

Any high school defensive player would be interested in Tenuta, not Chan. Gailey leaving would make no difference to Thompson - especially if Tenuta is made head coach.

Besides any player wanting to come to GA Tech is interested in GA Tech - the whole package…..football, tradition, academics, location, etc. I could imagine that Chan leaving would have minimal impact on the mind of any recruit. GA Tech recruits are smarter than that.

By tech is pathetic

nice excuses. 7 wins a year..hmmm 3 or 4 acc victories..and samford, army, ut chattanooga. Good luck against Duke who couldnt beat GA southern on any day. Forget about Brandon he will go to a winner, just make sure you recruit a quarterback who can actually throw the ball more than 10 yards on a line and throw before the receiver makes his break. Then maybe you could beat UGA on a miracle day before this decade is over.

Chan the man is toast. After UGA pummels the GT into submission the Hornets nest will go ballistic and Tickle Piles will ensue with ferocity.

Justme, You are wrong.. A coaching change will indeed hurt recruiting because kids don’t just go for the school. They also choose the locale due to the coach they will be playing for.

Stay Chan, stay….he’s been a wonderful coach for GA Blech. The storyline from the VATech game said it all: VT players get their jerseys STOLEN, then whip Techsters in their own clothes! Hee hee!

yellowblood, do you need picture proof of UGAY quarterback ( I know that’s a big word for you )tickle piles? These BLOGS would not be nearly as entertaining without your daily dribble.

Mark Richt’s divorce will put a big crimp in our recruiting. Dont think that a lot of mom’s will approve of his affair with a cheerleader—-not that there’s anything wrong with it [wink, wink]

When we win out this season, I expect a raise and extension.

I think the tech players have a tickle pile in the shower each night after practice.

Changing head coaches doesn’t automatically change a recruit’s mind…it really depends on the new coach (and the changes to the rest of the staff). Did Spurrier going to SC hurt them? Saban to Bama? Even Weis to Notre Dame improved Irish recruiting.

Getting the right head coach could actually boost GT recruiting. GT has only had one top 25 recruiting class (this past year) which is most likely because of the addition of Giff Smith as the coordinator. Keep Giff, Tenuta and bring in someone that player’s know, like a Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells. They would be player magnets!! (unrealistic options, of course)

Chan wins out, he earns one more year. Loses any of the next three, it would be tough for me to continue supporting him…
