With Heard County running back Dontavius Jackson and Westside-Augusta receiver/cornerback Sanders Commings committing in the past 24 hours, here’s a look at five other Georgia targets who could be next to make their college choice public:
1. Vinston Painter. The 6-foot-5, 309-pound guard from Maury High in Norfolk, Va., is considered the fifth-best player at the position in the nation by Scout.com. Painter has maintained for months that he will choose between Florida, Georgia, Miami, Penn State and Virginia Tech.
Conventional wisdom suggests he will stay home and become a Hokie. But Painter, who is scheduled to visit Miami this weekend, insists Georgia still has a shot.
“I’ve been watching some of Georgia’s games, and they’re playing good football right now,” Painter told the AJC Tuesday night. “I’m still interested in Georgia.”
2. Cordy Glenn. The 6-5, 310-pound offensive tackle from Riverdale told the AJC Tuesday night that he’ll choose between Alabama and Georgia in the coming weeks.
“[Georgia’s] Mark Richt is a great coach,” said Glenn, who attended the Oklahoma State-Georgia and Georgia-Alabama games earlier this season. “He’s about family and values. He’s straight to the point and honest.
“It’s going to be tough to decide between Georgia and Alabama.”
3. Toby Jackson. The defensive end from Griffin remains one of the mysteries in Georgia’s current recruiting class. After committing to the Dogs earlier this season, the 6-4, 240-pound defensive end has been on a whirlwind tour of the ACC and SEC.
Jackson, who attended the Florida State-Miami game in mid-October, is scheduled to be in Tuscaloosa on Saturday when Alabama hosts LSU. Jackson says his commitment to the Dogs is soft and his top five consists of Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia and LSU. Jackson told the AJC last week that Georgia is his “top dog for now.”
4. A.J. Harmon. The 14th best offensive tackle, according to Scout.com, Harmon has committed to Clemson. But that hasn’t prevented the 6-foot-5, 328-pound Jefferson County lineman from making numerous trips to Athens.
It’s no secret that he is close friends with Georgia starting center Fernando Velasco, a Jefferson County product.
Jefferson County coach J.B. Arnold said recently that he’s convinced Jackson will wind up signing with Clemson or Georgia.
5. Josh Jarboe. The speedy Cedar Grove receiver is considering Georgia, Georgia Tech and several Division I powers, including LSU, Ohio State and Tennessee. And Oklahoma is making a late push for the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder.
When Tech is mentioned, Jarboe frequently points out how he wants to be the next Calvin Johnson in coach Chan Gailey’s program. But Georgia likely gained some leverage with Jarboe recently following the commitment of his Cedar Grove teammate, Xavier Avery.
Sabino narrows his list to two
Etienne Sabino of Dr. Michael M. Krop High in Miami, the fourth-best middle linebacker in the nation according to Scout.com, is no longer considering Georgia Tech.
“I’m down to Ohio State and Southern Cal,” Sabino said Tuesday evening.
Sabino, who also eliminated Florida, Miami and North Carolina from consideration, said he plans to announce his decision on, or around, his birthday on November 13.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker is also working on having his commitment televised live on ESPN.
“That’s a possibility,” he said. “It’s something I’m looking at.”
Sabino had nothing negative to say about Tech.
“I’ve just always felt good about Ohio State,” Sabino said. “And I had a good trip out to Southern Cal. I have a good feeling about those two schools.”

Regarding Jarboe…he has always loved GT and we would love to have him. However, he does not have a “commitable offer” are this time from GT.

Hopefully Richt doesn’t have AJ Harmon at #4 on his recruiting board, since he’s on record as being a solid commit to Clemson.
Fantastic work, though. I think the Dawgs end up with Jackson.

According to rivals.com Sanders Commings and Dontavius Jackson has committed to UGA. Can anybody confirm this? If this is the case then this is great news. If we are not National Champs next year then we will be in 2009. GO DAWGS!!!!

Hey Marty,
I am as big a dawg fan there is, but please pipe down the NC talk. We are recruiting well, and have been for several years. That part of it is vital to winning a NC. But there are more ingredients required to win it all. Let’s hope we have them.

What a week to be a Dawg! Jackson’s committment confirms that UGA continues to be Running Back U, and we will be balancing that with a heck of a QB and receiving corps. Looking great for the end of ‘07 and the next few years. GO DAWGS!

The Dogs need to focus the rest of their recruiting efforts on offensive tackles!!!! Cordy Glenn and the kid from Ohio they are recruiting at this position are huge needs. Moreno, King, and now Jackson will need some big uglies to plow the way for them. We need offensive tackle depth in a bad way.

I agree with junkyarddawg…please don’t start talking NC. That’s crazy. Think SEC champs and hope the chips fall for something better. Where have South Florida, Rutgers, U Conn, etc etc been in recruiting ranks in the last few years? Remember, we’ve had plenty of blue chips that don’t pan out. Yep, we gotta go after linemen too. Can’t run nor pass without beef up front.

Jackson fils a huge hole for next season- Great to see he will be in Athens in Jan. We still need a big DL and a big OT. Don’t overlook the commitment of Augusta’s Sanders Cummings. He is a bit of a sleeper in this class but my bet is that he is a household name when he leaves UGA (like a G. Blue or T. Davis).

Yellowblood,
While UGA might not be in the BCS title game the next two years, we DEFINITELY know who won’t be there-GAYTECH.
What has the top recruiting classes gotten us ? How about 67 wins in 7 years(and counting), 2 SEC titles, 3 SEC East titles and numerous top ten rankings.
Also, 6 wins over another team in the same state who wishes they actually had our football coach. Go fix my computer and then you can play Space Invaders and I’ll give you the Cap’n Crunch cereal you have been whining about.

Great High School players don’t always translate into great College players. Just like great College players don’t always translate into graet NFL players.
Gino Torretta, Charlie Ward, Danny Wuerffel, Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne, Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch, all Heisman Winners who aren’t exactly NFL MVP’s
That being said I am Glad to see a lot of talented high schoolers coming to UGA. Hopefully most WILL “pan out”
Good luck to all, and Go Dawgs!

A little jealous huh! It sucks to be you. If it were Tech getting the good recruits (ha ha, never happen) you would be reacting the same way. There is nothing wrong about being excited about your own team. Of course if Tech had a team worth getting excited about maybe they could fill that High School Stadium.

Georgia will have the best recruiting class in the country this year. In typing that, It dosent always lead to a nation championship. On the good side of that, look at what Florida did. When Myer first got there, they had the best recruiting class in the nation, but they won the Championship his second year with a mix of youth and experience. Georgia has the same thing going o n right now. In two years Stafford will be a senior, Moreno will be a Junior, Kaleb a sophomore, and the offensive line will be a veteran group. The defense has athletes at every position and they are very young this year, but the thing that will decide will be the coaching!!!!!! Does Richt have what it takes? He may have to get rid of his coordinators. I dont trust them.

These two new committments are awesome! Now, can any of the four all-american running back commitments we have play offensive line? Someone is going to have to because the two committments we do have (1 guard and 1 center) are going to be pretty lonely. Besides that these current linemen recruits were not heavily recruited.

The next ingredient to competing for a NC is to hire a NC caliber defensive coordinator and get rid of this break but don’t bend defense that Martinez runs. Until we have a championship defense, winning the SEC is next to impossible.

yellowblood posted:

How so? How does that mean nothing? Here’s the history over the past 5 years: UGA usually has a top 10 recruiting class. UGA usually ends up in the top 10 in the final polls. That’s the bottom line.
Now, if you are implying that just because a recruiting class is ranked #3, the team should also end up ranked at least #3 (i.e. that there should be a direct one for one correlation between recruiting class rankings and final poll rankings), then you are truly even more clueless than most delusional GT fans.
It takes more than just great recruiting classes to win championships. Now, great recruiting classes are a requirement, but not a guaranty, and most of us understand that.
Finally, given that recruiting well is one of the requirements, you bet your arse we are going to celebrate having a highly ranked one. But we do know that it doesn’t guaranty a championship.

Yellowblood,
You are basically saying that UGA’s highly ranked recruiting classes means nothing. I certainly don’t think it means we will win a NC, but I know it is a step in the right direction.
I also know it means that UGA will continue to put better football players on the field than GT and that more than likely UGA will continue to beat GT 7 or 8 out of every 10 years.

Hooperdawg and Mekvertikleiben,
Samuels is projected as a strong side LB, besides we already addressed the middle linebacker position with 2 true MLB’s- Charles King and Rennie Curran and from what I hear from my friend on GA’s staff Charles White covers from sideline to sideline and is a big play LB with tremendous quickness and speed just like Curran. But it doesn’t hurt to know we have another big time LB prospect coming in Samuels.

Yet another top recruit eleminates Georgia Tech from consideration. Must be a disease going around. Yellowblood, I would be jealous too seeing all these highly ranked recruits choosing my rival. Let’s see… only 3 of your 14 commits rank higher than three stars. Only 6 from the state of Georgia and I beleive the DAWGS only offered 1 of those. Yeah, if I had to feed off leftovers that would sour my stomach too.

I’m congratulating some kids for getting the chance to earn a college degree? I also suggested that this was not a UGA blog but a recruiting blog. My comments seemed pretty neutral, if you ask me. If you had a problem with my comments then I suggest that you need to get a life.

Glenn, I have no problem with you. This Heard County guy wants to make it some big spectacle. It is all about football. You think he gives a crap about earning a degree. If he did, he would not be signing at UGA. These kids should just be thankful that anyone is giving them a full ride to earn a degree. However, I realize the big business of College Sports and the rise to the professional ranks that will earn them more money than my sorry A*& will ever see. Howver, if one wanted a real education he should try out these schools: GA Tech, Notre Dame, University of Texas, Virginia, Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest, and many more that outrank UGA.

FYI - rivals has a policy of listing as a “soft commitment” those players committed but with visits still scheduled for other schools.
If he cancels his visits to the other schools he will be listed as a solid commitment. As long as he is still scheduled to visit those other schools he is “soft”.

one thing is for sure, good recruiting may not lead directly to the bcs nc game, but no one gets there without it.you techsters should look to your own recruiting instead of sniping at uga’s.i am not anti tech, though i am a dog fan,and i want tech to be a viable contender in the acc.you will never win the acc the way you are going.right now rivals doesn’t even have tech in the top thirty while scout has tech tied for 19th with vt.miami and fsu are in the top ten, with clemson not far behind.according to rivals tech signed no o linemen in 06,three in 07 and so far one o lineman for 08.tech has seven sr and jr o linemen on it’s depth chart, which takes ten men just for the 2 deep.am i the only one that sees a problem here?in three years tech will replace about half the o linemen it will lose in two, with no allowence for injury, off field problems, academic problems,or a guy that just doesn’t work out.somebody had better light a fire under chan!many of you seem to think chan does a good job of recruiting,i disagree.
