Georgia is no longer in the running to land a commitment from Jerrell Harris of Gadsden City (Ala.) High, rated the second-best weakside linebacker in the nation by Scout.com.
“I’m down to eight schools, and I’ve eliminated Georgia,” Harris said Wednesday evening. “It just seemed like the other schools are more interested in me.”
Harris will now choose between Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Southern Cal and Tennessee.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was a guest of LSU during the Tigers’ victory over Florida in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
“The atmosphere was crazy and exciting,” Harris said. “The game went like I thought it would. I figured Florida would come out hard, but LSU would come out strong in the second half.”
Reeves discusses trip to Knoxville
Stone Mountain receiver Charles Reeves Jr. attended Tennessee’s 35-14 victory over Georgia in Knoxville on Saturday, then managed to hang around an extra day to spend quality time with Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer.
“He’s a real nice guy who is down to earth,” said Reeves, who is considering scholarship offers from Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. “He comes off as quiet until you start talking to him.
“He wound up letting me hold the [1998 national championship] crystal ball on Sunday.”
Reeves, who plans to return to Knoxville later this month when the Volunteers host South Carolina, claims he’s not ready to pull the trigger on a commitment.
“Tennessee is a school that I would go to, but I’m trying not to rush things,” he said. “And they’re not trying to rush me. But they keep telling me that they want me.”
Looking back on last weekend’s SEC contest, Reeves figured Tennessee would have little difficulty with Georgia.
“I wasn’t surprised,” Reeves said. “Tennessee is a better team to me.”

Sounds like someone is a little bitter about not getting an offer from their in-state school.

I would hope that with the problems we’re having at linebacker that we would make the #2 LB in the country feel “wanted”!!!!!!!

The problem is that Willie Martinez is still employed. A few years back our coaches got lazy, and recruited trouble makers and felons at linebacker. When that experiment panned, Martinez simply lines them up 5-7 yards from the line of scrimmage to where they aren’t a factor. Thanks to Martinez, we are just not a good school for linebackers (or defenders as a whole, really)!

Is it too much to ask Martinez to recruit a defensive player with a good head on their shoulder? UGA is desparately in need of an Eric Steltz type player. Someone who can keep their head on a swivel when the pan starts frying in the kitchen.

Maybe the simple truth is that Harris wants to get better at playing linebacker when he goes to college.

What is Mr. Hood’s motivation here ? To report only the things that make Georgia look bad ? I’m SURE that no OTHER players that we’re recruiting wrote off ANY of our rivals lately, right ? Curiously, I don’t see THOSE reported here. You know what, I’m not interested in reading anything else written in this medium that isn’t authored by Chip Towers or Mark Bradley - they are the only consistently professional journalists that I see here any more. It’s not about always being pro-Georgia either, because there are obviously some problems to deal with, but even criticism and negative discourse can be handled professionally. Just selecting stuff that makes Georgia look bad, or ignoring similarly negative stuff about our rivals, is NOT professional - it’s biased. Georgia-hater journalists, there are jobs elsewhere if you are unhappy here. I won’t read you any more. AJC MANAGEMENT, I doubt that this kind of reporting is what the huge majority of your readers want to see. We are the still the customer, right ?

“Buzz,” Georgia did offer Jerrell Harris. Do you really think they didn’t offer the #2-rated weakside LB in the nation who’s been recruited by almost every major program in the country?!?
“Joe,” you’re being beyond oversensitive. The AJC is as pro-UGA as it can realistically be. His motivation was to report big recruiting news relevant to (one of) the hometown team(s). I’d think he wasn’t doing his job if he didn’t report that.

I think every major school get’s their fair amount of great athletes. One or two may get more than that. But don’t you think after that, it really boils down to coaching? Would Georgia be better right now if we had signed Tebow instead of Stafford? Would Florida be any worse right now if Stafford was their guy? What I do like about Tebow after watching several Fla games is he is really an emotional, charismatic type leader.I don’t see that drive in Stafford yet. Not like a David Greene or even D.J had.

Matt & Mekvertickleiben: Hello! Heard of Richard Samuel? Christian Robinson? Akeem Hebron? Don’t need another linebacker when you’ve got 3 outstanding linebackers already in the fold.

We’re missing the point here: We (UGA) can get players who were great players in high school, and do nothing with them. Let’s face it: college football for most of the highly regarded players is a stepping stone to the NFL, and UGA is quickly becoming clear to players, as it has to some of us, that we just don’t have a great program. Sure, we’ll win most of our games, but Spurrier was right, we are not a football power, nor will we ever be with Coach Richt. I hate to say too as I respect him so much. I don’t know who the answer is, but we’ll always be just what we are.

Recruitment is not just about identifying and going after the best “athletes” available. It’s about identifying and going after the best “student athletes” who can fit your philosophy and be productive in your system. Some of the problems we have now is missing on kids who have attitude problems and were not prepared to meet the academic rigors of being a “Student”.

Joe, At least you have two homers usually reporting on your team (Bark Madly and Chip). The Atlanta press (especially the AJC and 680 The Farce) do their best to paint everything (even wins) r/t GT in a negative light. Yes, With a 3-3 record there are plenty of negatives, just as in Athens at present. You just seldom here about the negatives at UGA from the press. As far as Hood’s article on the recruits, it looks like he was just printing what the kids said. Very objective reporting to me, which is seldom seen from the Atlanta press.

Yeah, JD. Reeves just watched UT dominate a 35-14 game. How in the world could he possibly surmise that Tennessee was the better team ? ……. Hello….
