Banneker’s Simmons leaning toward Miami; Sabino considers Tech

Published on: 08/02/07 10:10 PM

Banneker safety Darrell Simmons admitted Thursday evening that a front-runner is emerging during his recruitment.

“I’m leaning a little toward Miami,” the 6-foot-1, 201-pound Simmons said.

Simmons labeled himself a longtime Hurricane fan.

“I just grew up liking the program,” said Simmons, who is also being recruited by Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State and Tennessee.

Sabino still looking at a November commitment

Etienne Sabino of Michael Krop High in Miami continues to weigh scholarship offers from Division I powers such as Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Florida, Miami, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Ohio State and Tennessee.

Sabino, rated the sixth-best linebacker in the nation by Scout.com, said he has plenty of reasons to consider a commitment to Tech.

“I like Tech a lot,” Sabino said. “I went by and saw the campus [earlier this summer]. I know there’s a lot of opportunity there.”

Sabino said he’s a fan of defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta’s defense.

“I like their attack-style defense and the way they like to blitz,” he said.

Making the transition from Miami to Atlanta would pose little difficulty for Sabino.

“I’m a city kid,” he said. “I’ve lived in the city all my life. I don’t think it would be much different living in Atlanta.”

Jarboe continues to weigh options

Cedar Grove receiver Josh Jarboe said Thursday night he will likely wait until after the upcoming season to commit.

Jarboe, who has offers from programs such as Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Tennessee, hasn’t started the process of striking schools off his list.

And he said the close proximity of Georgia and Georgia Tech isn’t necessarily an advantage for the Dogs and Jackets.

“They’re my hometown schools, and I like them,” Jarboe said. “But I just want to see them all. I want to see everybody first before I make my decision.”

Jarboe said his sole focus for now is guiding the Saints to a playoff berth.

“It’s wins,” he said. “I want to win. I’m going to perform, and I need my stats too. But I just want to win and go to the playoffs.”

Callaway’s Byrd content to wait on more offers

Ronald Byrd Jr., a 6-foot-7, 258-pound defensive end for Callaway, hopes a breakthrough senior season will translate into additional offers.

“That doesn’t put any pressure on me,” said Byrd, who already has offers from Marshall, Purdue, Arkansas, Louisville, Indiana and Troy. “I’ll just go out there, play hard and be impressive on the field.

“I’ll let the colleges take me for how I play and who I am instead of me trying to showboat.”

Byrd said he tentatively plans to use his five official visits this fall to travel to Louisville, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Arkansas or Troy.

Bolton and Brice to announce commitments on Saturday

Norcross receivers Devonta Bolton and Brice Butler have press conferences scheduled on Saturday to announce where they intend to play college football.

Bolton will choose an offer from Alabama, Auburn, Boston College, Florida or Georgia.

“I just felt comfortable with this school,” Bolton said, careful not to tip which school’s colors he will sport on Saturday. “It just feels right.”

Bolton doubts that he’ll be redshirted.

“I’ll probably end up playing some as a freshman, just to get used to the offense,” he said.

Why am I not surprised that the kid involved in an armed robbery would be a lifelong Hurricane fan?

Write it down…..Bolton at Bama - he wants to play as a true freshman at WR. UGA is stocking young WR talent…With Troupe and Hill from 2007 (by the way pup fans - Hill is your sleeper and will remind you of Gibson - but I predict will be more consistent)Moore, Wilson and Durham Sophomores and Green and King firm for 2008 - early playing time will be a challange. Tide recruiting picked up a big boost with T. Love and have some momentum.

Butler has never considered UGA or THE DEFENDING SEC AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Gators seriously. He will either commit to FSU, LSU or a West Coast team.

Dawgs next WR p/u most likely Adams….or another sleeper type player you will need for future practive squad.

But in the final analysis….it still will not matter what UGA does as they are so mentally whipped against the Gators…they automatically go into that game knowing that they will choke. I have never seen a team so mentally psyched out about playing an opponent…but I must admit one thing I like about UGA - they hate TN as much as we do!!!

Hey Mastergaturd,

Two things I like about UGA:

  • They hate Florida as much as we do.

  • Me and my family have always been treated with respect while we go to games in Athens…I can’t say that about how we have been treated in Gainesville. Even as much bad blood between Bama and Vols, we have always been treated with respect in T-Town. We all have our over the top fans….but the Gators beat the cake in classless behavior with foul language and rude behavior toward 10, 12 and 15 year children. GO FSU!!!

  • Gators may be talented this year….but will lose to both the Vols and Dogs this year.

Don’t forget the unreal obnoxious behavior in Baton Rouge. LSU fans moon opposing players buses and hold up their IQ on the middle finger. I know of a UGA fan that went there a few years back for a game and he had a ticket in a LSU section. He said a woman much larger than him said he would not wear that GD Dawg shirt in theie presence. He said he went and bought a LSU shirt and shared his whiskey with them and everything was kosher after that. (As long as he didn’t obnoxiously cheer for UGA) True Story and ask any fan or especially any football players you know how they are treated upon their arrival in Baton Rouge.

On the subject of more classless fans, Vanderbilt, yes Vanderbilt fans tend to show their lack of class in Nashville. I attended the UGA/Vandy game with my wife 2 years ago in Nashville and made the mistake of sitting amongst the Vandy crowd. Every time I raised out of my seat to support the dawgs, I was chastised and threatened incessantly to the point where Barney Fife came over and threatened to throw me out of the stadium for doing nothing more than standing up and cheering for my team. I WILL be back again this year for the game but will be seating amongst the UGA faithful this time around. To h3ll with Vandy and their fans!

    GaDawg,

I have never experienced any nasty behavior from the 50 or so Vandy fans that come and watch the Big Orange when we are in Nashville.

This quote cracks me up: “Etienne Sabino of Michael Krop High in Miami continues to weigh scholarship offers from Division I powers such as Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Florida, Miami, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Ohio State and Tennessee.”

Since when is Georgia Tech or North Carolina a Division I power? Give me a break.

I have been to LSU (sorry fans EVERYWHERE), Bama (older fans respectful, youngerfans thinking the Bear will reappear), SC (crazies, but I applaud them as they pack the place even when they were down for decades), UGA Tech (UGA owns the place, it’s like a home away from home game), Jax (the UF fans are obnoxious, but until we start turning the tide…) But the best fans (outside the Classic City) are the Tennessee fanz.. I also love their setup on the Tennessee River & the Volunteer Navy.. The best away game in the SEC!!

    Hey Tickle Pile Pete,

I have read numerous comments poking at Tech regarding Tickle Piles. Apparently, I missed out on how this started…can you shed some light on this subject?

GA Dawg - I can agree on that.

BullDawg Rick - you did not mention Auburn, I wished the Big Orange played them more often. What a great venue (along with Sanford and Neyland) and fantastic fans. Stadium is loud. Great SEC experience.

Here are my favorite places to visit - Big Orange Perspective of course:

SEC Experience as God intended it to be (in alphabetical order): Alabama, Auburn, SC, UGA.

    Miss Congeniality: Ole Miss

Excellent SEC venues - but fans ruin experience: - Florida, LSU. (remember - I take my kids to the games).

Play them cause there on the schedule: Kentucky, MS State, Vandy.

Potential: Kentucky, Ole Miss (great fans, have always been classy - show great enthusiasm rooting for there team - but something about going there feels mid-major).

Need more data: Arkansas - sorry pig fans - I have only been to Fayettville once - first year we played when you joined the SEC. We were in and out and I was not able to see the campus and get the feel of the Hawg experience. Hawgs have since added onto the stadium and from what I understand…it’s an excellent venue. Need to go back and party with the pigs to get the pulse!

Notes: Ole Miss - only been there three times - did not have the feel and excitement of going to Athens, Gainesville, Bama or Auburn - felt like we were going to MTSU or playing another mid major due to size of the school. But my gosh - there is not one unattractive person on that campus - very classy people before the game…and after the game. But rooted like H3ll during the game.

SC - thumbs up - incredible fan base. If they win the SEC - Holy Cow!!! that place will explode! Good venue as well.

Miss State - Conference USA candidate.

Kentucky - Man those guys really hate the Vols - but I’ve got to say - always been treated well there. Stadium not as impressive as the SEC powerhouses.

    Go Big Orange!

As a LSU fan that recently retired, one of my goals is to visit the remaining SEC sites I haven’t made yet. I am well aware of the problems in Tiger Stadium & around our tailgating, but I can also tell you that we have shared a pop & our tailgating food with some of the nicest visiting fans on a Saturday night. Unfortionally, this type of behavior is not reported by visitors……….but the exceptions make the front page. Such is life with the “drive by media”. I will say that the only problem we have ever had with visiting fans were a couple of good old boys from UGA. I know they are the exception & am still looking forward to my trup to Athens.

    Vol4Life -

I’ll answer your question about the origin of the ‘tickle pile’…..

A loser by the name of Sam Cunningham played baseball in high school and could not get a scholarship at GA Tech. Then, he couldn’t even get in as a regular applicant. So, he ended up at Emory University where he now plays baseball for them (look him up on the internet). He has become so bitter against GA Tech that he comes on these blogs and has created the ridiculous ‘tickle pile’ immature crap that solely wastes time and space. He uses a variety of names, as if that will ‘trick’ us to think that it isn’t the same loser.

Hey justme, i googled this cunningham person and it took me to a gay porn web page that was started by a gay uga fan. Figures.

I did not go into the site, however it had photos of some guy wearing an emory t-shirt and a uga hat on the front page. is this the bitter guy your talking about?

If so he certainly fits right in with the rest of the gay nation in athens.

This guy is obviously obsessed with tickle piles and gt. Of course he should know by now that tickle piles are exclusive to uga where they originated. Maybe that is why he was wearing the uga hat!

Btw, good luck against those dogs from athens. All us vols will be pulling for you.
