Marist’s Taylor to commit to Tech; Uzzi to visit UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/25/07 10:26 PM
Latest news
Marist safety Cooper Taylor said Wednesday evening he plans to commit to Georgia Tech later this week.
“By the end of the week,” Taylor confirmed. “Practice starts [on Wednesday at Marist]. I want to do it before then.”
Taylor, whose father Jim Bob Taylor is a former Georgia Tech quarterback, had narrowed his choices to the Yellow Jackets and Virginia.
“I like the close to home with Tech,” Cooper Taylor said. “And at Georgia Tech, you’ve got [defensive coordinator] coach [Jon] Tenuta, who is a great coach to play for.
“I also like Virginia’s campus that’s not in the middle of the city. But Virginia has five safeties already committed, so there’s no reason to put myself in that position.”
The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Taylor indicated he’s a couple of phone calls away from completing his commitment with Tech.
“I’ve got to talk to the coaches again and make sure I’ve got everything finalized, grades are good and all that,” Taylor said.
He says it’s too soon to know if he will be redshirted during his freshman season.
“Nothing yet there,” Taylor said. “They’ll just see how my body fills out.”
Uzzi to visit the Classic City on Thursday
Holding scholarship offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Duke and Ole Miss, Chamblee lineman Omoregie Uzzi figured he’d have a commitment in place well before fall football practice begins.
But unless Georgia coach Mark Richt can pull off a major recruiting coup in Athens on Thursday, Uzzi will be an uncommitted 6-foot-4, 310-pound rising senior when practice gets underway next week at Chamblee.
“I was trying to commit before camp, but I don’t think it’s going to work out that way,” Uzzi said during DeKalb County media day at Clarkston on Wednesday.
Uzzi, who attended a camp at UGA earlier this year, will visit Georgia on Thursday in hopes of gaining some individual attention from the Bulldog coaching staff.
“The last time I went there it was with a group of people,” he said. “I just want to spend time with the coaches.”
Uzzi believes his character is one of the primary reasons he is a Division I prospect.
“They know I’m a good person and they like that about me,” he said. “I’m trying to do the right thing all the time.”
“And I’m a big guy that moves pretty well.”
Stephenson’s Route changing directions?
Stephenson cornerback Destin Route appears to be on the verge of backing out of his commitment with Marshall.
“I’m leaning toward Memphis,” Route said late Wednesday. “I like Memphis a lot. I’m trying to get in touch with them.
“And I’ve got another couple of options like Southern Miss.”
Route admitted that he hasn’t communicated with the Marshall coaching staff recently. He went on to say he’s been in touch with a recruiting coach at Memphis to make the Tigers aware of his interest.
“I plan on going to some of the games at Memphis this fall,” Route said.
“I’m not decommitting with Marshall yet. Let’s just say I’m a soft verbal.”
Offers for Southwest DeKalb’s Waller
UAB leads Ohio, Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Akron in the race to land a commitment from Southwest DeKalb defensive back Manley Waller.
“I want to go to UAB,” Waller said. “But I’ll wait until the first or second game of the season to see if more offers come. That’s when I have a big match up with one of the top receivers.
“After that, hopefully more offers will come if I have a good game.”
The Panthers are scheduled to host Cedar Grove and star wide receiver Josh Jarboe on Sept. 1.
Waller already has a connection with a member of the UAB coaching staff.
“One of their coaches used to coach at Southwest DeKalb,” Waller said. “He’s now the running backs coach at UAB.
“When I talk to their coaching staff, they’re all just real down to earth. I get along with them real good. And UAB isn’t too far from home.”
Legendary Southwest DeKalb coach Buck Godfrey is expected to roam the sidelines this season following off-season surgery.
“He’s tough, but when you get to know him he’s real laid back,” Waller said. “And he’s going to put his best players on the field.”

Good seeing Tech beating out Wake and Duke for this guy. Like to see Georgia boys stay in GA and play for a Georgia school, even if it is Tech or Ga. State’s new program. I think those two are going to be locked in for some major recruiting battles over the next few years.

Like I always say, I would much rather have boring alcohol issues than the felonies and cheating going on over that ugly woman filled “campus” of tech’s. WAKE UP NERDS!!! Your coach lied on his resume, your players sell pot and still play, your QB doesnt go to class, your players got false grades and still played…GLASS HOUSES YOU SOCIAL PARIAHS, GLASS HOUSES!

Corndog your name fits….I’ll just leave it at that, you went to tech, be imaginative.
On another note, it is fun to see Tech land a few good prospects, maybe in the future they will actually compete with the Dawgs.
For all of you techies who think just because secret weapon Reggie Ball is gone and you have now moved forward, think again. You don’t replace Calvin Johnson, I don’t care how many times Reggie couldn’t get him the ball. Every D had to change their coverage completely to man(men) up against him. Now its back to we’re going to bliz the hell out of your slow white qback and lets just see how well he does. I’m going to laugh so much this year, you guys have no clue. Just because you put a 38 spot against West Va, who by the way has the weakest defense known to division 1 football, means nothing as you are in for a rude awakening once you face FSU, Miami, UGA, any team with speed and coaching. 7-5 at the very best, probably 6-6. Put that in your pocket pouches nerds!

Load up on these 2 star athletes while you can Tech fans….because Mississippi St. and UAB are hot on the trail. Please start Nesbitt for the next 4 years, too…..Reggie Ball all over again. There is a hot prospect out of North Florida that you may want to check out as well- he is not that great of an athlete, but he has experience in the terroristic training field. He should be very appealing to your trade school in the hood.

geez—i moved here from the west coast 1 year ago with no interest in or allegiance to any teams/schools in the region, but i’m a big college sports fan. while i agree that a lot of uga fans tend to be a bit obnoxious and full of themselves (and some even a bit frightening), i still prefer them to the sniveling lot of gt bed-wetters. i’ve never observed a more pathetically insecure, hysterically inferiority-complex ridden group of human beings. a simple post about in-state recruiting like this one devolves into another occasion for gt fans to lash out. i suppose i can understand why, but, my god, this is tiresome.
oh, and before one of you says “go back to ca., pansy,” don’t worry—i am. but i’ve really liked living here for a while!

By Dave, I see that you pink up on things in a hurry. If the “Bugs” were in the SEC I’d pay attention during the season to how they’re doing but since they chose to go play in the ACC then our game with them doesn’t count for anything except for which Bowl we go to. As always happens one day they’ll beat us but Tech missed their shot to win in ‘06.

If Tech is unfortunate enough to have to play GA State, it will at least be home and home. UGA would accept this game only if the first 5 were played in Athens. I would prefer to play Ga Southern. At least you would know you’re going to be in a fight.

Hey dogs. You have people hired to see that athletes go to class. Why not just recruit guys who will go to class on their own. 40 class checkers! What genius ame up with this. Are you going to send someone home with them and tuck them in at night? Is this what they do at Hargrave? This is the funniest thing since the Jim Harrcik curriculum was outed a few years ago. Even with all this the Dogs will only win about 7 this year. Oh yeah I forgot the year is next year. Dogs all the way in 08. The class checkers program will make sure that everyone is eligible.

Hey UGA fans, the time limit is up for you to use the computer at the public library. Go back and tend to your crops. Uzzi will be a Yellow Jacket because he wants to play football at a high level and just as important because he has character. Character and academics matter at Tech.

Yellow blood mentioned that UGA would have 5 home games before playing at GSU. Do you think we would actually have to make that kind of deal? GSU would make more money by selling all their games to UGA, they are called money games. Tech has them too, ie Troy last year. But UGA would never have to trade 2 away games for 1 home game like Tech did with Notre Dame. The reason is Tech is a B rate program and UGA is an A rate program.

One interesting note about our “2-star” recruit that we look like we’re going to get: he’s got an offer from Virginia. Al Groh is a lot of things that suck, but he is a great recruiter. They’re perenially (every year for the UGA guys) a top 25 recruitng program. Also, Watson, our “3-star” full-back had an offer from THE Ohio State University.
What does all this mean? Nothing. Recruiting is for the fans to have something to read between February and August, which is why I don’t understand why/how UGA follows it so much. Proof that recruiting means nothing: 16-4-4-6-11. Those are UGA’s last five recruiting rankings. They finished the year unranked in the USA Today Poll and 23 in the AP. How could that happen with a #4 senior class, a #4 junior class and a #6 sophomore class? We know CMR is God on earth. So, it’s not possible that he could have done a worse job coaching than his recruiting.
You know what’s more likely? If you look at UGAs finishes, their recruiting ranking is close to the previous year’s final ranking. Finished 23rd last year and got a #16 recruiting ranking. Finished 6th overall a couple years back and got a #4 recruiting ranking.

Hey Techies,
Here are the facts:
“Numbers don’t lie. The ACC was 6-16 against teams from other BCS conferences last year, 0-3 in its highest-profile bowl matchups and 0-4 against top-10 opponents.”
“Not to mention 1-7 against the SEC.”
“The ACC is 3-31 vs. top-10 opponents since 2000, when its flagship program, FSU, began to slip. Its champion has lost seven straight bowl games. Now it’s breaking in four new coaches who are busy exploring the territory and cautioning fans to be patient.”

i just got off the rivals site, you tech guys would do well to do more reading about the acc instead of wasting your time on blogs insulting uga. there are four to five teams in the acc beating tech to the best players. miami and fsu seem to be working on at least top ten classes. virginia tech, clemson and boston college also seem to be coming on strong. tech plays uga.every year, but the game does not count for much except tradition. we have to be more concerned with the sec race. i would suggest that tech be more concerned with the acc.

Paul, The “Tickle Pile” investigation they are referring to is a joint Georgia Tech/Fulton County Health Dept. investigation of the rising number of STD’s reported in and around the campus. Some have said it’s because the traditional Tickle Piles we hold have become “nastier and nastier”.

gte578e,you posted this twice,so i guess you want a reply. i assume you haven’t been a college football fan for very long so i will attempt to explane why recruiting is important. if your players are faster, stronger, bigger, and better football players than the guys on the other team, you greatly increase your chance of winning the game. i agree that recruiting is stressed too much today and even if you have the best players you can be beaten, but your overall record will be much better. you can find good players that aren’t highly rated by the scout services, david green, davie pollack, and thomas davis come to mind, but most good players are well known. the teams that are consistantly in the top ten at the end of the year are consistant in their recruiting. they may have an off year, but on average they are top ten in both ranking and recruiting.

Hey, GT90champs, is that English grammar class you took in fifth grade just not sticking with you? Or is it just very hard to keep numbers and letters together in that teeny-weeny brain of yours? They do look somewhat alike, I know—with all of the straight lines and curliques, it can be a little confusing.
Tech’s national titles were all either (a) shared or (b) in the Paleolithic Era. Fordham and Yale won national titles, too, but they are likewise irrelevant in the current collegiate athletic environment. So the “Four national titles” mantra you keep chanting means just about nothing (and Georgia has two consensus national football titles, by the way, not one. Get your data straight before you mouth off).
Tech’s athletic program better than Georgia’s? How many true national titles has Tech ever won (not ancient football MNC’s, but true national titles won in NCAA competition)? One? That’s right, one—their women’s tennis team title this season. THAT’S IT.
In the past 25 years, Georgia’s won 30 non-football NCAA championships in men’s tennis (seven times), women’s tennis (five times), women’s gymnastics (eight times), equestrian (twice), baseball, womens’ swimming and diving (four times), mens’ golf (twice) and women’s golf. Georgia has also won 125 SEC titles in 15 sports, including 12 SEC football titles. How many ACC championships in football has Tech won? Oh, that’s right. Zero. Georgia’s all-time record against Georgia Tech in football? 58-36-5, with the Dawgs winning nearly 70% of the time. Since the beginning of the Vince Dooley era, in 1964, that record is a staggering 32-11 in Georgia’s favor. That’s a 75% clip.
The numbers don’t lie, my idiot friend. But your diploma does…if you have one. Which I doubt.
Read Strunk’s Elements of Style and see if you can compose your next post in English. With a few facts, to boot, to go along with the usual hogwash.

Techsls Gay-ly, or whatever,
Our ladies tennis team just won the NCAA championship on your courts. Guess you’re too busy making stuff up on the board to pay attention to actual facts.
Also, inside word is that Stafford hurt his throwing elbow over the summer.
Whether or not that is true, I predict 7 losses this year: South Carolina, Ok State, Tennessee, Florida, ‘Bama, Tech, and Auburn. This will be the worst team since Ray Goff.
Tech will have 10 regular season wins, losing to Miami and Boston College.
