Georgia gains ground on Love; Fall decision likely for Jackson

Published on: 07/22/07 8:49 PM

Tyler Love, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound tackle from Mountain Brook (Ala.), came away impressed with Georgia following a visit to Athens on Saturday.

“It went really well,” said Love, whose visit to Georgia was his third. “I had a great time. I was able to spend a lot of time with coach [Mark] Richt.

“We talked about football and life in general. We got to know each other a lot better because, normally, we’re only able to talk on the phone.”

Love said one of the weekend’s highlights was an opportunity to spend time on campus.

“When I got there, I went on a campus tour and went to the Terry College of Business,” he said. “I like it a lot. It’s a prestigious business school.”

Love, rated the eighth best offensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com, has narrowed his choices to Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Oklahoma.

When asked if he considered committing to Georgia over the weekend, Love said “Georgia gained ground. I’ll make a decision in a couple of weeks.”

Heard County’s Jackson anticipates another stellar season

Heard County running back Dontavius Jackson continues to consider scholarship offers from Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Penn State.

Jackson, who rushed for 2,462 yards and scored 17 touchdowns last season, said he has the five offers he covets.

Now, he plans to take official visits to each school this fall before making a commitment.

“I just want to have another great season [for Heard County],” said Jackson, when asked about his near-term goals. “Right now, I’m just lifting weights and running.”

Jackson acknowledged that friends and relatives often urge him to remain in state and commit to the Bulldogs.

“Yeah, I hear that a little,” he said. “But no, it really won’t affect my decision.”

Salem’s Davis commits to Mississippi State

Salem receiver/cornerback Terrance Davis made certain Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom had first-hand knowledge when he committed to the Bulldogs late Saturday afternoon.

“I was actually in coach Croom’s office when I committed,” Davis said. “Mississippi State was my first offer and one of the first places I visited.

“I felt real comfortable around all the coaches. They made me feel like I was at home. And I really love the facilities.”

Davis believes the Bulldogs can become a first-tier SEC program under Croom’s guidance.

“I feel like Mississippi State is headed in the right direction,” Davis said. “I feel like they will be competitive in the SEC.

“Coach Croom is a guy that doesn’t play around. And I really like that. He has a storied history. And I feel like he has a lot to offer me and that I can learn from him.”

Davis was recruited by MSU as an athlete.

“I can play either quarterback or wide receiver on offense,” Davis said. “They’re going to give me a legitimate shot to play quarterback. But their depth chart there is real deep.

“They see me as somebody they can get the ball to and run reverses and screens.”

Better take Dewayne Allen off the commit list. He just spent another week end in Chapel Hill doing drills and will take his visits this fall. Maybe leaning toward the Dawgs is a more accurate classification.

I’m a huge Butch Davis fan. I think he’ll make an immediate impact on the program and Allen is seeing the writing on the wall.

Once again, wrong Buck. He said from the beginning that he was going to take visits. Lets see, TE factory UGA, or basketball school, ACC (insert chortling here) member unc? DA wants to play the best and be in the best position to play on Sundays in four years. He knows that isnt a team with baby blue football uniforms. Shall we start a list in case Dwayne is reading this? Leonard Pope, Troy Sadowski, Clarence Kay, Shannon Mitchell, Martrez Milner, Ben Watson, Jermaine Wiggins, Randy McMichael…..Come Dwayne, you know what you want to do.

Read about Love on Saturday in Rivals. Nice long article and interview with him. Day late and dollar short as usual for the ajc.

Tyler has been very impressed by Georgia and loves Athens. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Love’s parents alumni of Alabama and there is about a 0.001% chance of him playing for anyone but the Crimson Tide.

Once again wrong? Don’t think you know what’s been going on. If you want to keep him on the commit list, fine, I just have him as leaning. Go to Georgiasports.com(Rivals) and read the latest report. Don’t think I’m wrong again and BTW when was that 1st time?

my facts?

for starters…below is link to a list of the Top 50 Business Graduate Schools as ranked by USNews&World Report.

Lets see…Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, MIT, Northwestern, Chicago….still no Georgia….Cal, Columbia, NYU, Michigan, Duke, Virginia…still no Georgia….Cornell, Yale, Cal-LA, Carnegie, North Carolina, Texas…still no Georgia….Emory, SoCal, Ohio State, Purdue, Indian, Georgetown, Georgia Tech…still no Georgia and I just listed the Top 25. That averages one school for every other state in the country…how many can be prestigious!!?? (btw…scroll to near the bottom of the list and you will find the “prestigious” school Love is speaking of.)

Lets face it, and lets be honest, tech is trade school. You train kids for a trade and do a very good job of it. I thank you because the little nerds that work in my company do a great job which allows us big boys to put a great product on the market. I have my BBA from UGA and my MBA from Emory. Nerd,

UGA has the #2 undergraduate Risk Management and Insurance program in the nation (#1, Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business). In addition, the Accounting, Management and Informantion Systems, and Economics programs are top 20.

When looking at public schools, UGA has a Top 25 undergrad business program. Anyway you cut it, the facts show the blind obsession you nerds have with UGA. Grow up and face reality. Tech specializes in engineering to kids who grow up pigeonholed in front of their computer screen playing dungeons and dragons while intelligent, socially well rounded persons who are more capable of having a positive effect on society as a whole is what UGA produces.

The sad part about the “nerds” as you call them ( I call them un-athletic, un-coordinated and feminine at times)is that they really hate Tech! They chose to go there but they want to act like jocks and pretend they know about athletics. The real story is that they just want to exercise their so-called intellectualism by pretending to know something. With the exception of the “true athletes” at GA. TECH, they would end up in the hospital if they got tackled just once! The “true athletes” that attend Tech are probably very embarrased by this bunch! As for the athletes that have run in’s with the law, at Tech, they get lost in the 5 million people, and the AJC staff finds it easier to peruse the Clarke County bookings or get their information from the Athens Banner-Herald or some other source (as usual) than running all over Atlanta to the different departments to find the techies that booze it up. There are advantages to everything, and in spite of the “bookings”, it is still heaven in Athens compared to being in crime infested Atlanta.

Bowl games 10 years in a row without ever having a stellar recruiting class as to count for something. Ramble On, thanks for the kind words from the “other side”. Butch Davis is going to jump into a lot of people’s mess kit’s. He proved at Miami that the man can recruit. Last estimate I read was that Allen is still about 85% Dawg. I feel sorry for the teams that depend on N.C. players to make their team and the “Tar Heels” will be a winner under him. I’m sure that all of the Coaches in the ACC have one eye on every move he makes. Much the same as SOS in the SEC. The Dawg/SC game is fast becoming a real Kick Off game for the SEC season. This is exactly what he wants the only problem is when we win in ‘07 that’ll be 3 in a row. That having been said, I predict the ‘Cocks will end up 2nd or 3rd in the East.

GT didn’t kick UGA’s but last year in recruiting, Ramble On. One major recruiting site had GT’s class ranked slightly ahead of UGA’s and another had UGA’s ranked ahead of GT’s.

Arguing who wins in recruiting is silly at best. Hell, year after year UGA has a top 10 recruiting class depending on who you listen to; and GT is usually ranked 40+. As a fan who likes to see the results on the field, I don’t brag about those recruiting results even though UGA is usually ranked a lot higher than GT.

And to you techies who argue that UGA always has great recruiting classes but never wins the national champions, I must say I’m disappointed in your basic knowledge of statistics.

First, it takes more than just one top 10 recruiting class to consistently compete for a NC. UGA really only started bringing in top 10 recruiting classes year after year within the last 5 years. Before that we would have a class ranked maybe 10th and the following 2 or 3 classes would be ranked 15th - 20th, or even worse.

Now, there are 8 to 10 teams that consistently bring in top 10 classes; USC, Texas, LSU, Florida, FSU, Oklahoma, Ohio St., UGA and a few others. In my opinion there is not a lot of difference between #1 and #10 among the top 10 classes each year. So, let’s say all of those teams consistently recruit top 10 classes.

Question: How many of those teams can win the NC every year?

Bottom line: Yes, UGA has recruited very well over the last 5 years but so has at least 8 other programs; and only one of them can win the NC each year.

I think UGA has done quite well ever since we have been recruiting with the big boys ON A CONSISTENT BASIS (past 5 years). If we keep recruiting well and the coaching staff remains stable then we will get our chance to play for a NC.

Recruiting well is only part of it, though. There are other factors that have to go your way, like the aforementioned stability in coaching; leadership on the team.

Hell, you guys (GT fans) know as well as we (UGA fans) do that it takes more than great recruiting. And I know you GT fans(at least the one that actually know something about college FB)don’t really buy into the argument that UGA has under-achieved because of the top 10 recruiting classes with no NC.

If you did then you wouldn’t believe that GT has a shot to beat UGA each year; yet every year I see comments from GT fans who think GT has a good shot to knock of UGA (and rightly so).

I am glad we have won the last 6 games versus GT but the past 3 have been pretty close.

For the same reason you guys say UGA recruiting well isn’t going to mean UGA always beats GT; you should also understand the recruiting well doesn’t automatically grant a team a NC.

By Buck in the NW

July 23, 2007 5:22 PM | Link to this

Marietta Dawg, you “side drafted” a point that nobody has mentioned yet and I’m suprised so I’ll bring it up. “Recruiting well is only a part of it”. Ever heard the phrase “Games Day Coach”? In ‘07 that, IMO, is the biggest questions about the Dawgs. This will be Mark Richt’s 1st year as a H.C. after naming Bobo as the “OC”. That means he’ll be able to concentrate 100% on the whole game for 60 minutes. I believe that this will bring out the best he has but it’s still an open question which no one will be able to answer until Sept 1st. Carter, this might be a good blog for you.

It’s all about what you’re looking for. I chose GT because I wanted a good education. Most of the people that I went to high school with went to UGA but a few friends went to GT. Most of those that chose GT didn’t make it through and transferred to UGA.
To have made it through the I gives me great pride. Congrats to UGA for it’s great partying and football but I would never change my decision to go to GT. marieta and buck you are both right, but you left out what may be the most important part of winning the nc. yes you need good coaching, and several good recruiting classes. these alone are not enough, you need a heavy dose of good oldfashioned luck! what would have happened to fla last year if a field goal or two had been made,or a dropped pass or two caught? even had things stayed the same, had usc not been upset,uf wouldn’t have had a chance to play for the title. uga would not have a title without the miracle of lindsey scotts run in jacksonville. we have a good coaching staff, and we have been recruiting well,we just have to be patient and stick with the program and hopefully some breaks will come our way.
