Georgia-bound Jackson camps at Auburn; Green talks Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/16/07 10:06 PM
Latest news
Griffin defensive end Toby Jackson, who committed to Georgia last month, came away impressed with Auburn following his participation in a one-day camp on Saturday.
“I enjoyed it,” Jackson said. “I had a good time. I was sort of impressed by the coaches.”
Jackson said Tuesday evening he may travel to Gainesville, Fla. later this week to attend a similar camp coordinated by the Florida coaching staff.
“If I had to sign tomorrow, I’d sign with Georgia,” Jackson said. “But I haven’t signed my name on nothing. So I feel like the door is still open.
“Even though I’ve committed, I haven’t closed the door on anybody. I plan to take all of my visits.”
Jackson said he’s been candid with the Georgia coaching staff.
“I let them know that I’d still be taking all my trips and allow myself to be recruited,” Jackson said. “They said ‘it’s fine.’
“I think I made the right decision to [commit to Georgia]. I just want to see how bad other schools want me.”
Tech scores with Green
Defensive lineman William Green of Spain Park High in Hoover, Ala. labeled Saturday’s visit to Georgia Tech a success.
“It went real well,” the 6-foot-5, 208-pound Green said. “They had a camp going on, but I didn’t participate. I got to see more about Georgia Tech and what they’re all about.”
Green’s day included a tour of the players’ living quarters.
“I got to talk to the players and got to see how they live and saw the dorms,” he said. “And I got to see the academic side of the school. I like it a lot.”
Green downplayed recent comments when he listed Florida, Florida State and Alabama as the top three choices among his 35 scholarship offers.
“They’re just the ones that stood out the most,” Green said. “Georgia Tech is still in the running.”
Four for North Cobb’s Roark
North Cobb quarterback Matt Roark says his four favorites are Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Oregon.
It’s perhaps surprising that two of them — Kentucky and Oregon - are recruiting him as a quarterback when his preference is wide receiver. Roark’s father, Ray Gover, is a former Kentucky wide receiver.
“I’ll play either one, but I prefer receiver,” he said. “It’s more fun. At quarterback, I don’t really do much [in high school] that a true quarterback does.”
Roark is primarily a running quarterback for North Cobb. He had over 900 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, many on breakaway runs, last season.
But his size at 6-foot-6 and natural arm strength make him appealing at quarterback at the next level, too. He’s also one of his school’s top basketball players.
Roark also has offers from Duke, Indiana, Alabama-Birmingham, South Florida and Illinois. He says he won’t make a decision before the season.
Roark, who didn’t start at quarterback until the second game last season and was better known for his basketball, admits he’s surprised to have so many Division 1 football offers.
“They just started coming,” he said.
Salem QB Davis drawing numerous offers
Mississippi State, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Memphis, East Carolina, UAB, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State have offered Salem quarterback Terrance Davis.
“And the other big hitters, including Georgia, Wake Forest and Central Florida are looking at him,” Salem coach Chad Estes said.
A free safety who converted to quarterback at the start of his junior season, Davis, who is also receiving interest from Florida, seems to be a natural fit in Estes’ wing-t oriented offense.
Davis rushed for 1,000 yards last year while picking up another 900 yards through the air.
Mississippi State is the current front-runner for the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Davis, who is being recruited at quarterback, receiver and cornerback.
“I really like Mississippi State because they’re willing to give me a shot at quarterback,” Davis said.
Davis, who plans to commit no later than September, said he’ll take his five official visits this fall.
He hopes Clemson makes an offer.
“I really like Clemson a lot,” Davis said. “That’s always been my favorite school. But they haven’t really recruited me. I’d really like to get in the mix with them.”

Nice to hear about Green and Roark. I’ve read on an insider board that Toby Jackson is close to opening his recruitment up too.

Take off Toby. The Dawgs don’t need you if your word is no good. You will make a fine Auburn sociologist.

No Toby, dont take off. Mike isnt a Dawg, he is a nerd. Tough choices for kids, they have the right to make sure they are making the choice that is best for them. All you have to do to keep a kid from allbarn is let the parents see a tape of how Wingnut treats his kids on the sidelines during games. Yelling, screaming, pulling facemasks…thats all it would take not to send my kid there.

I was wondering. Was William Green allowed to participate in a Tickle Pile. If so that could have put him over the top:)

If Toby wants to visit other schools, that’s fine. But don’t say you are committed to Georgia if you are not. Say Georgia is your favorite, but to look around doesn’t mean you are committed. That’s like getting married and then telling your wife your honeymoon night: Baby, I love you…but I’m going to keep dating other folks. He also sounds like he has an ego: “I want to see how hard other schools want me.” I’m not sure we need that kind of attitude at UGA.

It makes you wonder which Cow College will offer Toby the most pay for play? The barn must have offered him more than UGAy did. Watch out for Urban Whiner though, since Gaytor boosters are willing to finance his investments in players every time.

I think Toby Jackson is someone with an ego. The comment of ” I want to see how badly other schools want me” is not his first. I don’t know why he committed when he is obviously a kid who is going to enjoy all the perks of the recruiting process.

Lamar, you are so right- UGA doesn’t need that kind of attitude. We need to keep getting recruits who get arrested for drinking or for savage beatings. That is the attitude Coach Richt needs to keep bringing in.

Sure it is an extremely important decision to make when dediding whcih school to attend. That’s obvious. However, once you decide and make a committement, your committed. Toby Jackson does not seem to comprehend the meaning of the word committment. Kids like Toby need mentoring. This is a possible character flaw. Of course, he could just be a very confused young man. UGA needs to decide which one. If its character; withdraw the offer.

These are major decisions for young men to make. Visiting other schools can assure them they have made the right decision. Mature fans should let them know how much we want them and not whine like little kids. There are very few states that have 2 colleges that are both nationally ranked for their academics. Other schools will always use the approach that school will be easier for them there, they are using what happened to Paul Oliver as an example. A.J.Harmon’s comment that “at UGA you play for championships but at Clemson you get to rub the rock and run down the hill” shows the are still kids.

my attitude is this: players never have so much power or influence in a program as when they are recruits. i would advise any recruit to take his time, look at all the programs recruiting him, and to protect his self-interest. once they sign on, they surrender much of their control over their own athletic and collegiate futures.
i don’t know how cmr handles it, but i certainly hope that he doesn’t tell recruits who “commit” that he will stop (or limit) his recruiting at their position, as some coaches do. i hope he doesn’t do it because by all accounts he’s a man of his word…

Toby should keep his commit to UGA. With all the other dawgs landing in jail these days, there is certainly no reason why a commit should feel honor bound to quit visiting other schools. If he had too much integrity, then he wouldn’t fit in.

A “turbin”? So you’re not only a xenophobe but a complete “ideit” as well? Go Dauggs!
I think that it’s a good thing for UGA that Toby is looking around for a couple of reasons: 1) The UGA coaching staff’s willingness to let him look around indicates that they’re confident in their sale of the program… plus if they try to strongarm him he might freak out and decommit anyway. 2) If he really is a goofball who would go back on his word then you probably don’t want him anyway; he might be prone to cause off the field problems with a “me first” attitude.
I hope Tech gets in good with Green. He looks like a good one.. plus it would be nice to take one right out from under Saban’s nose.

It’s a good thing for UGA that they are not an NFL franchise.
After Caleb King became UGA’s most recent addition to their players arrest list, as an NFL franchise, UGA would be subjected to serious fines and penalties to the owners and players.
As it now stands, no one at UGA has anything to worry about as far as punishments are concerned. That includes the players, coaches, or administration.
And here I thought a University was supposed to be an institute for being taught lessons.

I should have added that the saddest part of the whole matter is that these arrests are a reflection on the entire State of Georgia. Our tax dollars are being used to support UGA, and if the University cannot get control of the situation, then the Board of Regents or the State Legislature should. Again, let me reiterate, this issue should be applicable to any University that has this many of its student athletes in legal trouble.

I find it quite funny that UGA fans think that when a player commits to a college, they should stick to their word….
Hmmmmmm. Wasn’t there a QB recently that committed to GA Tech and then ‘changed his mind’ and ended up at UGA? I think his name was Shockley. And, the UGA fans welcomed him with open arms.
How does it feel now that the shoe may be on the other foot?

NO toby jackson is not thinking about coming to tech. The shoe is not on the other foot. And I don’t remember Shockley ever commiting to tech. I do remember a man by the name of Quitsy Carter. UGA fans didn’t seem to upset that he at one point wore a tech jersey. But none of that is even relevant because Toby Jackson is not even thinking about considering tech. But I DO SEE HIM GOING SOMEWHERE ELSE OUTSIDE OF UGA. This is not a skewed view because I am a tech fan but this is the gods honest truth. My whole view on recruiting is stars don’t matter and until the player are on the field I will not feel in jealousy in a commit. I just felt that I should report that Toby Jackson is probably going to open his recruiting. God this blog has some idiots. Tech and UGA.

Davey -
Who got your knickers in a twist?
My post was to point out the parallel between a player that had committed to one school (Tech) and then went to another (UGA) and this player that had committed to UGA and may end up at Auburn. And, as I said, I thought it was Shockley because I admitted that I was unsure….. maybe it was Carter.
If you are a Tech fan, I am embarrassed that you couldn’t see that parallel.

Davey - U r a poser! No Tech person would misuse “to”. You said “to upset” and it is “too upset.” Even a Tech engineer would know the proper use.
As I recall, UGA people were well aware of Carter initially committing to Tech and they rubbed it in the face of Tech people. The shoe IS on the other foot when/if their recruit now changes his mind and leaves UGA.
Seems that YOU are the idiot.

If you look back at the past CMR recruiting classes you’ll see that more and more prospects are committing earlier every year. That means the kids really are interested in the school and the staff, which says a lot about the direction of the program. I am with the coaching staff when they say they’re more into players who are into UGA.
The best thing about all these early commits is that they come at a time when the “commercialized” recruiting process has kids competing in a publicity contest. When a teenager commits early, he finds that so-and-so (non-committed) is getting more attention as signing day nears. He hears about friends, even rivals, being shuffled around campuses, scoping out the facilities, the girls, the restaurants, the girls, the academics, the girls, the depth chart, the girls, how many former players in the NFL, and, oh yes, the GIRLS!
It’s something every gifted athlete should experience when given the privilege. But it’s the recruits who abuse the privilege who end up hurting everyone, including themselves. These knock-down drag-out border wars turn coaches into salesmen, and bring out the best and worst in everyone. The kids are babied one minute, then put under tremendous pressure the next. There’s nothing wrong with seeing what’s out there, but I agree with many of you who believe that prospects who wish to do so hold off on committing until all visits are in and everyone’s given a chance.
Toby’s comments were very unprofessional but expected for his age. Kids who marvel at schools competing for their services are indeed self-centered. I must admit that I was shocked when he committed so early, and not surprised when he decided to “look around”. If for some reason he lands somewhere else, then another spot will open up for a player who WANTS TO PLAY FOR THE DAWGS!! If Toby wants to be a dawg, then he needs to learn the concept of TEAM. And if he does, I’ll be cheering for him on autumn Saturdays.
GOOOO DAWGS!!!!

Funny post guys……Techrules you really shouldn’t judge someone by their grammer or spelling. Especially after I call Quincy Carter “Quitsy”. Jeeeez ever heard of a uga fan mocking their own fav. My roomate at tech is about 5x worst than me at spelling. I subscribe to the hive and barely ever come onto this sad excuse for recruiting information. If you guys are true fans then you would too. Instead writing on these flea bitten blogs. And yes I am right it was Quitsy Carter……not shockley. He commited to tech then after realizing that Hamilton was the guy quit school. He then tried minor league baseball and after realizing that he sucked at that he joined ugag. It still doesn’t make any sense because tech has never even offered the kid.
Tech Rules, Justme join the hive if you actually care about getting any ACTUAL KNOWLEDGE about your school. Ha poser my A$$!
