Jackson’s Top Five; Bolton to visit Clemson

Published on: 07/10/07 10:04 PM

Heard County running back Dontavius Jackson said Tuesday evening that Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU and Penn State remain in the running to gain his commitment.

The 5-foot-10, 196-pound Jackson, who rushed for 2,200 yards while scoring 26 touchdowns as a junior, said he will likely wait until October to announce his decision.

Jackson on his top-five:

Alabama: “They’ve got great coaching over there.”

Clemson: “They’ve got two great running backs in James Davis and C.J. Spiller.”

Georgia: “It’s a running back school. Georgia has always produced great running backs.”

LSU: “They always seem to compete for the SEC and national championship.”

Penn State: “They’ve got a great coach. I think it’d be a good time to come in at Penn State.”

Bolton set to visit Clemson and South Carolina

Norcross safety/receiver Devonta Bolton plans to spend the next two weekends in the Palmetto State.

The 6-foot-4, 222-pound Bolton will take an unofficial visit to Clemson on Saturday. He will drop in on coach Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks one week later.

Bolton said his upcoming visits are more about academics and less about athletics.

“Basically, it’s about my education and what type of impact it will have on my life and future,” he said.

Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan and South Carolina are each hopeful of landing a commitment from Bolton.

“I still haven’t narrowed my list,” Bolton confirmed late Tuesday.

Battle dazzled by Central Florida

Central Florida coach George O’Leary’s rising program made a strong impression on Dacula safety Khiry Battle.

“Their facilities are top notch,” said Battle, who returned from Orlando Monday evening. “They compare with any of the SEC schools that I’ve seen. They’ve got a new stadium and their dorms are unbelievable.”

Battle will try to squeeze in visits to Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan State and possibly Georgia Tech this month, before making his final decision.

Buford’s King awaits initial offer

Buford’s Tyler King hasn’t received any offers, but the hard-nosed fullback is beginning to turn the heads of some prominent college coaches.

Alabama’s Nick Saban, Georgia’s Mark Richt and Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville are just a few of the names that have expressed interest in the 6-foot, 246-pound King, who will show off his abilities at a combine at Georgia Tech on Wednesday, before heading to Auburn on Saturday.

Turner turns to ballet

While Woodward Academy guard/defensive tackle Trenton Turner waits for his first offer, he figures nothing impresses a college recruiter like speed.

“So I’ve been working on my speed a lot over the summer,” the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Turner said. “I’ve been taking ballet. It’s something my coach recommended.”

Turner, who visits Wake Forest this weekend and plans to drop in at Samford later this summer, has already toured the campuses of Duke, Vanderbilt, Presbyterian and Furman.

“I like them all,” Turner said. “I like Vanderbilt a lot. They’ve got a great football team and academics to back it up.”

“Furman and Presbyterian have great small-campus atmospheres. I think there is probably a very good shot at Presbyterian [offering] and probably Furman too.”

Has Jackson been allowed to participate in our tickle piles at UGA? If he likes them, it may seal the deal for the dawgs.

Thats true, Ben. Of course, as you know, a tickle pile at Georgia is where fans sit around and make fun of the insects down the road, and how each year, they think they’re going to actually beat us…LOL, you can’t help but get tickled.

Jackson would be a solid pick-up. I saw Jackson and Bolton both at Georgia’s camp. Bolton is listed as safety/receiver, but he will eventually be a LB. Moreno, King, and Jackson would be another great trio in the backfield. Although, I would like to see one back, who stands out, get the majority of the carries, i.e. Lumpkin this year. It looks like we will have most of our commitments wrapped up by October like last year. So, don’t be upset next January when no one has committed for 3 months.

Hey Heard,

UGA hasn’t had a great running back since ‘81. That was 25 years ago. Now we as SO. CAL. have had great backs need I name a few? We at SO CAL stopped recruiting you because you might not make the grades to. So go ahead and commit to UGA and go to Hardgrave like the rest of all the great players that commit to UGA. Oh yeah what class is Heard Co.?

USCNUPE, Hey man just cause you guys have paid acouple of backs in the last couple of years shouldn’t make you think that any of the top SEC schools have as many NFL backs as you guys. If we could get around NCAA rules like you guys I’m sure we all would do better!

Let’s see USCNUPE. Herschel Walker, Terrell Davis, Rodney Hampton, Tim Worley, Keith Henderson, Cleveland Gary, Garrison Hearst, have I forgotten anyone? And I guess you could throw in Mack Strong now in his 16th or 17th year in the league. All of the above graced NFL rosters.

Terrell Davis played at Georgia? I didnt even realize that. I thought he only played for Denver. Must have been another back in a long line of under-utilized players we’ve had here. I thought I was the only coach that knew how to mishandle ball carriers.

The Georgia recruiting brochure has a picture of a beer keg on it which gives them an advantage for recruiting good old boys. Players know that that Georgia is less severe than any other University on penalities for drinking and other offenses.

Dontavius Jackson has narrowed his choices to 5 schools well i only see one real school on his list and thats Penn State it is the only school on his list where he will not only play football but he will also get an education

He’ll get an education at Penn. St. okay. Yea, his degree will be in Stadium Cleaning. Plenty of upward mobility as the Stadium is expanded over the years. Chance for supervisory position in Section C-4 after two years.

USC Nupe:

Son, that was just plain ignorant. Let me help you out with a little history lesson:

Garrison Hearst played for UGA. He won the Doak Walker (spelling?) award for best running back in the country in 1992 and finished 3rd in the heisman balloting that year. Not bad. He wasn’t a dominant pro, but he was the best college running back in the country in 1992.

Terrell Davis went to UGA. He was the MVP of the Superbowl, which isn’t all that bad an accomplishment. He is also considered on the fence for hall of fame in the NFL, with the only thing possibly keeping him out is the lack of longevity due to a knee injury.

Other Dawg running backs that played in the NFL in the last 20 years. Rodney Hampton, Mack Strong (multiple pro bowl fullback), Verron Haynes, Olandis Gary, Robert Edwards, Musa Smith, Patrick Pass, Tim Worley, and on and on.

Granted, not all of these were dominant college running backs depending on your definition, but between Walker, Hearst, Edwards, and Hampton, that is a fair number of dominant college running backs at one program. If you also add all these other “accomplished” college backs to the list given that they had NFL careers, that is an impressive list.

I would have to agree with Patrick. Penn State is a great choice! I do like Georgia as well, but if I were a running back (which I am nowhere near it), I would pick Penn State for a few reasons. 1) Second biggest stadium in the US, holding approximately 107,000 (I was there for an Ohio State game a few years a go and the attendance was over 110,000). 2) Traditional running school. Penn State is all about field position with the defense and the running game. 3) Joe Paterno 4) Always in the national spotlight (The Big 10 network starts in August and everyone in the US will have it. What other conference has a national network?) 5) The highest graduation rate out of ANY Division 1 school in the nation! (That is after all the main purpose of college).

There are many more, but I will not go into it.

Do not get me wrong though, I like UGA and I think it would be a good experience for Jackson as well, so you GA fans do not get too upset!!

I think that mr. uscnupe needs to further his education. It’s a proven fact that you should not engage in conversations in which you have no knowledge of. I don’t even think that guy watches football. He only named one player from his school that has played in the last 2 decades. I bet he doesn’t even know that Reggie Bush’s back up (Lindell White) is in the NFL and had more touches that Reggie Bush last year. UGA breeds running backs nupe. I bet your mother could name two of them from the last decade. Go flip a burger because this AIN’T your thing man. G

Im Back,

Last time I checked these backs Didn’t do anything until they got to the NFL. I.E. Terrell Davis(6 round pick Special Teams as a rookie) Patrick Pass- one of the best HS Running Backs during his time did nothing at UGA. Garrisson Herst Maybe. But Tim Worley??? Who is that? Yall really think yall play ball at that country club school you eill never be able to get the top players. Even the top in state players (I.E. Allen Bailey-Miami, The kid from Berry from creekside-Tennessee) Mark Rich should’ve stayed at FLA State they would have made Bowden Retire and he would be able to attract the type of players that he deserves to coach.

OH Yeah ZONE3G I have a PH.D from Stanford and I definately dont stay in zone 3 come see me in Atlantic Station where the real money is!!!!!!!!!!!

We can also extend this conversation to Quarterbacks, and WR’s also. NAme how many 1st round picks you have had from Those positions. Here is the rundown Mike Bobo is coaching, Eric Zier???? Quincy Carter probaly is in Zone 3 some where sniffing Coke, David Green probally works at Ruth Cris steakhouse or Houstons, and not to mention WR’s, Fred Gibson can’t make the falcons and nobody can catch a football on that team. I bet Sean Bailey wish he could’ve went to another school. Need I give you the run doen of USC; Leinart, Palmer, The future Booty(stafford couldn’t hold his Jock Strap). We even got a good quarter back just sittin in the dorm room waiting in Mitch Mustain so it dosen’t stop. Maybe you should tell your sons if they want to play ball and have a chance at a natl championship, media attention, marketability(UGA knows nothing about that) and great coaching and not to mention its SO. CAL (need I say more) not to go to that country club school UGA!!!!!!!!!!!
