Hagans waits for Dogs, Jackets; Powers pursue Bryant
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Latest news
Northview defensive lineman Cordian Hagans may be the state’s most heavily recruited player without a scholarship offer from Georgia or Georgia Tech.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pounder has 18 offers and counting, including ones from LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Clemson and Virginia Tech. While Hagans said he is “thrilled” with his recruiting situation, he admits the absence of in-state offers is a constant topic of conversation.
“There are a lot of Georgia and Georgia Tech fans around here [Alpharetta], especially Georgia,” Hagans said. “At least once or twice every day, someone asks me, ‘How can you have offers from all those big-time schools and not have one from Georgia or Georgia Tech?’
“It puts me in kind of an awkward situation because I don’t really know how to answer that question, other than to say, ‘You’ll have to ask them because I don’t know.’ “
Hagans said his only contact with Georgia Tech has been recruiting letters.
Meanwhile, Hagans said he has established a good relationship with Georgia assistant Stacey Searels, and two communicate two to three times a week via text message.
“[Searels] keeps saying they like me a lot, and they will be following me closely,” Hagans said. “I don’t know how to take that. I’m just guessing they probably have some other defensive linemen they like better than me, but I don’t know for sure.”
Hagans admits he grew a fan of the Bulldogs and often dreamed about playing in the red and black. Does it hurt his feelings his childhood favorite has not offered?
“Yes, of course, I would like to be offered by Georgia, it’s a great school,” Hagans said. “But I don’t think I can complain about anything when I have so many great options.
“So I’m not stressing out about Georgia or Georgia Tech. If it happens, it happens. If not, I’m just fine.”
The other offers to Hagans are from Arizona State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Boston College, Louisville, Mississippi State, Maryland, Ole Miss, Rutgers, Central Florida, Michigan State and Indiana. He also has about 15 other schools that have told him he is a scholarship candidate.
Hagans, who claims to have no early leader, has been on an unofficial visit to Auburn, and plans trips to Clemson and LSU within the next three weeks.
Bryant has offers aplenty
Peachtree Ridge’s Derrick Bryant and Virginia Tech-bound Cameron Demps will make up half of what might be arguably the best secondary in the state this fall.
LSU, Auburn, Alabama and Ohio State headline the list of schools that have made scholarship offers to the 5-10, 184-pound Bryant.
“Derrick is just a real versatile player who can player corner, safety or receiver,” first-year Peachtree Ridge coach Bill Ballard said. “He has a lot of upside. He’s real strong and can run well.
“He’s exactly what a Division I secondary coach is looking for.”
Though Bryant is being recruited as a cornerback, his ability to play multiple positions is a plus.
“He’s a no-miss guy because he can play receiver and return kicks,” Ballard said. “He’s very versatile.”
Demps committed to the Hokies on Sunday. Ballard figures Bryant will make an announcement fairly quickly.
“He’s trying to come down to a decision here pretty soon,” Ballard said.
Second-generation player eyeing Tech?
Marist’s Cooper Taylor is being recruited by Division I schools as a safety.
But in an odd twist of fate, the 6-4, 185-pound Taylor is spending his summer readying for his debut as the War Eagles’ starting quarterback.
“Cooper will start at quarterback and play free safety on occasion,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. “His specialty is free safety. But he had a real good spring and made great progress at quarterback.”
Taylor, who runs the 40 in 4.49 seconds, has offers from Georgia Tech, Virginia, Duke, Mississippi State and Marshall.
“They all like his athleticism,” Chadwick said. “His speed is really good for a tall guy. He has range and size. And he became a more physical player last year as a safety.”
Lining up behind center won’t be a totally new experience for Taylor this fall.
“He’s been a backup quarterback for the past couple of years,” Chadwick said. “He’s actually quarterbacked some as far back as the seventh grade. Several injuries have slowed him.”
Georgia Tech may have the inside track on Taylor, whose father Jim Bob Taylor is a former Yellow Jacket quarterback.
“His dad played at Georgia Tech, so I think they’ve got a slight advantage over some of the other schools,” Chadwick said.
O’Leary impresses Britain
North Cobb offensive tackle Matt Britain plans to take recruiting visits to Ohio and Western Michigan later this summer.
But the odds favor the 6-5, 280-pound Britain playing college football in a more tropical environment.
“I think my front-runner right now is Central Florida,” said Britain, who has scholarship offers from the Golden Knights, Ole Miss, Troy, Middle Tennessee State, UAB, Ball State, Ohio and Western Michigan.
“I like the coaches [at Central Florida] a lot. I like the camp and the facilities. I went down there for an unofficial visit a couple of weeks ago.”
Former Georgia Tech coach George O’Leary, who currently heads up the program at Central Florida, was a instant hit with Britain.
“Coach O’Leary is an awesome guy who is down to earth,” Britain said. “He’s a football coach and a great guy.”
While the Golden Knights sit atop Britain’s list, he claims he hasn’t ruled out playing football in the north.
“I can see myself playing up there in Ohio or Western Michigan,” Britain said. “But I’m not sure how my parents will feel about the distance yet.”

Tech is fighting with powerhouses Duke and Mississippi St for this can’t miss prospect Taylor. It will be hard to beat those two. Those two school are becoming a thorn in my side. They are also competing with us for that stud OL out of Tenn. He is 5’10 225 with a record 2 pancakes blocks for his high school last year.

Ben,just like most UGA types, is happy winning the National Recruiting Championship instead of the national football championship. Every year the UGA Underachievers prove that recruiting dosen’t mean much on the field.

Ben, you are a flaming redneck. You finish in the top five every year in recruiting, yet UGAY does nothing in the top five standings. Yes we gave you wins because of Reggie, that’s all about to end this year. So, go break your mom out of jail and crawl back in your camper with your wife who is really your sister.

UGA routinely has a Top 10 recruiting class and routinely finishes in the Top 10 at the end of the season. Explain where the underachieving occurs.
I would also like to dispell this nasty rumor that GT actually had a better team than UGA for the last few years and it was only Reginald Ball that lost for you. Plese. GT gave nothing to UGA. You’ve had one advantage of late, and his name was CJohnson. Guess what? That doesn’t mean you should have won anything. Georgia is always superior in at least 85% of the matchups on the field, and 100% of the matchups between caohing staffs. Don’t argue these points, they are facts. Good day sirs.

Yawn… another day, another flood of antagonistic comments from our Dog friends… You guys would almost seem clever if you hadn’t said the EXACT SAME THING every day for the better part of a decade. Why do you care what recruits Tech gets if they’re just vastly inferior to the ones that you’re going to get anyway? Go kiss your sister or something.
If this Taylor kid is 6-4, runs a legit 4.49 40, and plays both QB and Safety for a football program like Marist, then the offers will come. Who cares who has offered thus far? There is still more than half a year before signing day. Furthermore, Cooper has said that he wants to go to medical school, so perhaps football factories (UGA) take that as a lack of commitment to athletics. After all, what good is a “student-athlete” if he is studying all the time? Let’s pretend for a moment that you were one day planning to go to college (whew… this is hard) and maybe medical school. Now let’s pretend that you had full scholarship offers from Tech, UVA, and Duke. I really don’t think that you’d say “Man, I like my offers thus far, but I really want that offer from UGA so that I can be assured to receive the very best education that money can buy.”

How do you talk smack if you’re a Tech fan? You’ve got nothing. You finally make the ACC championship game in the worst year in conference history and lose to Wake Forest in front of about 200 fans. If you look at the NCAA strength of opponent ratings for the last 7 years, UGA has had a higher strength of opponent rating that GT 4 of those 7 years. Usually the spread between the two schools for opponent strength of schedule is not that big. So, let’s not pretend that Tech plays a stronger schedule than Georgia. The facts do not bear that out.

We consistently sign top 10 classes. Everybody who’s anybody in the state of Ga is a Dawg fan. Our stadium is twice as large, our coaches are clearly superior, and as mentioned before, we get our pick of the top HS talent in the state and nation. Reggie Ball couldn’t make equipment mgr. for UGA. Calvin Johnson?…shut him down when we played him…made him a non-factor. This explains why we dominate…DOMINATE the Nats…especially the last 3 times we played ‘em. The games weren’t even CLOSE. They were absolute ROUTS, as you would expect them to be…what with all our superior players, coaches and fan support. Watching these games, it’s clear that the Yechs don’t belong on the same FIELD as the Dawgs. They played like middle school girls. It’s not even a challenge anymore.

Wow UGA fans getting snippy when the truth is out… the only way UGA makes in the top ten is padding the schedule with weak teams…. and no, tech is not one of them… you got lucky the last three years in winning the game against tech and it was no skill involved by the convicts that play on the UGA football team. If you cant see that then it shows more than stupidity on your part. But hey if you guys enjoy waiting till someone stumbles at the end of the year so you can run over and yell “WE’RE NUMBER 10..” then be happy…. and how is your basketball program doing…? oh yeah thats right…. it still sucks…

Who can blame these recruits and their families. I have been on a campus tour at Georgia Tech before deciding on a college. Half of the students barely speak English. The campus is in the middle of the hood. Traffic is terrible. The academic program is not as great as subjective insiders make it out to be.

Yes, UF has beaten UGA over the last many years.
So, which is more important? Obviously in-conference games are more important, therefore UGA should focus more on UF. But, idiot ugay fans cannot grasp this simple concept.
Yes, UGA has recruited superior compared to Tech. But, Tech has utilized the talent that they have far better - and this shows in the results (win/loss record, etc.) from year to year. IMHO, this means that the Tech coaches are better, but no ugay fan would ever admit that!

Wow, lets not let the facts get in the way. Here’s a look at the last 7 years for comparison sake:
Winning Percentage: UGA = 0.76667 (of course that miles ahead of Yech, but it’s also ahead of other teams you may have heard of: Virginia Tech, Florida, Auburn, Michigan,Tennessee, Florida State and Notre Dame - just to name a few) Yech: 0.60674 (behind such powerhouses as Southern Miss, Fresno State, Utah, Northern Illinois, etc)
Win-loss record: UGA = 69 - 21 (8th best in the country) Yech = 54 - 35 (28th in the country)
Head-to-head record: UGA 7 wins Yech 1 win
Conference Championships: UGA: 2 Yech: 0
AP Poll Finish:
‘06: UGA 23 Yech NR ‘05: UGA 10 Yech NR ‘04: UGA 7 Yech NR ‘03: UGA 7 Yech NR ‘02: UGA 3 Yech NR ‘01: UGA 22 Yech NR ‘00: UGA 20 Yech 17

Here is the truth, ugag has consistency gotten a top 10 recruiting class for 6 years now, top 5 couple of times and the average recruiting class for tech is mid 30’s, and only that high because of last years. It was in the 50’s for Gailey’s first couple of seasons.
With that being said, it always amazes me that UGA fans love to make fun of GT. Its like a 21 year old who goes out and barely wins in a game against middle schoolers and then brags about it.
Don’t tell the leg-humpers but our recruiting has steadily gone up, and the games have gotten much closes, even with RB.
But when you think about it, UGA has to get it kicks from beating a GT team, it really can’t say anything else.
National championship: NOPE, hasn’t even played for one during all this recruiting success.
Florida: LOL, that one is real funny to UGA fans.
Tennessee: Granted you guys have done well recently against them but didn’t they hang 50 on you last year.
And oh by the way don’t remind them that Spurrior has been recruiting some good players at South Carolina, and Saban is beginning over in Alabama.
There are going to be too many teams in the SEC for all of them to win. LSU AU UA TeNN FL UGA SC Ark
One or two of them is going to return to being a consistent 7-5 8-4 team. So take your pick, UGA,AU, FL, TENN, ARK, which two of those will drop? The leg humpers are going to be one of those team.
I know some guy whose front teeth are loose are just got done digging a ditch is going to respond 51-7 to me. And thats fine. I’ll just ask him if he can count to two. Thats the number of championships UGA has in its HISTORY if you count the shared one of 1942. But since they are so keen to point out that 1990 was shared, so it doesn’t count for GT, I won’t include that, so ONE championship.
Having said that Dawg fans are like liberals, they feel like they always have to speak their mind , usually they are full of crap, and they hate everybody who isn’t like them

Georgia didn’t get a chance to play GT in 1917 because the football team went to war.
Georgia got jobbed in 1946 (12-0) and lost the NC vote to princess ND (9-0-1), but staked claim in ‘42 & ‘80.
So the only difference between the number of times Georgia finished with the best winning percentage and the number of time GT did is the 1917 season.

As a fan of both GA and GT, you guys make me laugh with the name calling. Both schools are very fine institutions and have a fine history of success in football. Georgia has had more success the last seven years, but GT fans can point to some periods where they dominated in this series i.e. 1949 to 1957. As a matter of fact- Georgia ranks # 11 all time in wins and GT ranks # 20 and both have won multiple National Championships and Conference Championships both SEC and the Old Southern Conference. I’m sure the battle for State bragging rights will continue to be hard fought and close games most years for the forseeable future. Go Dawgs and Go Jackets

UGA has had 6 straight top 10 recruiting classes and before last year had to 10 finishes as well. So UGA is doing a great job. Also GT did a great job recruiting last year and Chan will do a fine job this year. I hate Tech, but I won’t make junk up to trash them. UGA is a year away from IMO from contending for the national championship, but a lot has to come together. UGA had a same type of year that florida had last year a few years ago and the only reason they weren’t in the big game was due to having 2 undefeated teams. That’s going to happen so a lot has to happen to win it and IMO 2008 will be uga’s best chance.
There are other guys like Hagans who uga is interested in and haven’t offered. Another guy is Robert Jones. He was the 3rd best player at uga’s camp (the first two being dowtin and jones and both are not committed to uga). I believe Jones gets offered and accepts an offer to uga. One thing to also note just because a guy doesn’t have a lot of offers yet or offers from smaller school doesn’t mean he isn’t a talented guy who can help your team in the future. There are plenty of guys that fall under the radar and some fit some systems better than others.

The thing that the UGA fans miss is that Tech fans don’t try to pass their team off as the world’s greatest. UGA should be Tech 7 or 8 times out of 10, so it is not clear why so many UGA fans are so pumped about beating Tech.
This is most likely due to UGA’s fans being mostly “sidewalk alumni”. I like to see UGA do well as it is a state school, but the UGA fans make it really hard.

From an outsiders view (and most people I know outside the state), sure, Tech is a little nerdy, but overall I’d take that over croakie wearing hicks anyday. UGA has football and nothing else. Tech fans can at least graduate and make a decent living. I’ve never seen a more redneck city than athens…if I had a nickel for every guy with a croakie and khaki pants, they are all carbon copies of each other.

JB thankyou for the first sensible post of the day. I’m not going to argue that Tech is better then UGA because we all know thats not true. But tech has been progressing as of late and are closing the gap between the teams. It’s not like every time the one team gets a commit the gap is closer or farther. These kids have yet to play on the feild and we cannot assume what they will do. College Sporting News did a reranking of the 2003 recruting class and ranked tech 11. I don’t remember what uga was but I think it was 14. But that doesn’t make much of a difference. You guys have had the better team the last couple of years(even though last year was lost by Reggie Ball, 4-21 and 46 yard). I fault Chan for not seeing that Taylor Bennett wasn’t better but that is the past. I am looking forward to this season and I hope tech can get some revenge. But if not that will just add to the hate and fun of the rivalry. CLEAN OLD FASHION HATE.
Also on a side note Bama paid their players.

I agree with that Clemson guy. I doubt that recruits desire to leave for college just to live in the middle of the hood and fight the Atlanta traffic everyday. This Tech fans don’t have much to hang on to it seems. They either brag about what they did in the 50’s or have to talk about what other teams have done against Georgia. Jealousy is a Bi#@h. They are so consumed with malicious comments about Georgia, when they need to be focused on their own demise. They can’t even sell out their own mini stadium for games anymore.

Since GT left the SEC after 1963 they are 38-82-3 against SEC teams or a winning percentage of 32.1%……. it is obvious to see why they wanted out…..In the same time frame UGA is 65-27-2 against the ACC or 70.2%……UGA fans stop getting all upset about what GT fans say. It is clear the SEC has a better brand of football. UGA should concern themselves more with the powerhouses they face in the SEC (UF, UT, AUB, LSU, BAMA)

I agree with that Southern Cal guy, why would a recruit want to live in a one stoplight town like Athens.
I have to wonder, if Atlanta is so terrible then why are more and more people moving here? Also, if Athens is such a great place then why aren’t people flocking to it?
The fact of the matter is that UGA is a football school, they should beat Tech 80% of the time. The UGA fans crowing about beating Tech in football is like a Kentucky fan thinking it’s a big deal to beat UGA in basketball.
Tech is a very highly ranked university and the students are proud of their team, but they don’t live and die by it. I can understand why this would go over the heads of the sidewalk alumni (fans of UGA that have never attended a class there but use UGA football to make them feel better about themselves).

Well, it just doesn’t surprise me that ugay idiot fans cannot understand the sentence ‘Tech utilizes its talent better than UGA.’
If both teams were given the SAME level of talent, then fine, you can compare the teams equally. But, according to everyone, UGA gets better talent (see the recruiting rankings) compared to Tech. However, the difference in recruiting has not translated into on-the-field results.
While Tech gets less talent, Tech’s results on the field are admirable.
While UGAG get great talent, UGA’s results on the field are disappointing.
This is why it is logical (and I know that logic often escapes ugay fans) that Tech has far better coaches. However, as I said before, no ugay fan would ever be able to follow this logic much less admit to this fact.

From a Marist parent that went to GA about Cooper Taylor. He is the real deal, having started the last two years at safety for Marist. He didn’t play QB because very few players go both ways at Marist (one of the reasons they win by staying fresh) and Gary Marshall, a two year starter that signed with Colgate, played QB. Fellow Dawgs that disparage Tech, stop embarrassing me. Tech is a great school and if you live in GA, you should pull for them 10 weeks out of the year. Most of their kids went to high school in GA and we should support them.

As a UGA fan, I have to say that Tech has been an underachieving program for years. I think all they need is a great coach. They have a program with a (limited) history, a great downtown Atlanta location, and, for fans sake, a stadium with a beautiful view of the Atlanta skyline. It is especially pretty on all those Thursday night games they play! All Georgia fans are thankful when coaches that can turn their program around aren’t hired there. Think Tuberville or Petrino. Imagine what a coach like Spurrier could do with all the recruiting advantages (especially among black players) that downtown Atlanta offers. All of us Dogs are happy that Tech either didn’t offer or didn’t hire Spurrier! Hope the eggheads keep up the marginal work, may lead to another six straight losses!

Ben,
Tickle Piles are a ’60s phenomenon. Usually a girl’s school prank, Tech is the only place they are still popular. Guys start tickling each other. Others start piling on and they tickle each other to the point that some pass out. At Tech they became popular at fraternity houses but soon spread to the general student population(some say their athletic teams) and alumni but with one difference, they take off their clothes when doing it.

UGA started the tickle pile when our QB and back-up QB ‘got together’. See the link below:

The UGA fans have been so embarrassed by this, they blamed it on GA Tech, thus it appears on the AJC blogs. However, they still haven’t been able to get those photos out of their minds.
The photos tell the story, so no descriptive words are needed.

Man, these GT fans amaze me. Hello, we have dominated your program for years. You act like you won the National title last year. UGA whipped you again. If the ACC is so great, explain WF last year. Yeah right. We whipped GT and VT. The national champions are from the SEC. USC defeated Clem, Florida whipped FSU, UGA whipped GT and VT. You are a second rate conference. No, Reggie Ball and Reuben Houston were not honor students. Give it up. If you guys are so bright, why can’t you devise a scheme to defeat UGA? Calvin Johnson is gone. It’s never going to change. If recruiting is overrated, why are you reading the articles? Notice how many kids say yes to UGA and no to GT. Yes, you guys offer 90% of the UGA recruits; they simply don’t want to play for a loser.

Georgia Tech Recruiting Pitch Send your child to GT because: 1. He can get in touch with his feminine side. 2. Don’t worry about him becoming a father. No chicks.
3. He can get a great deal of practice updating his job credentials. All he has to do is check with Coach Gailey. He is constantly applying for other jobs. 4. No coaching change. No one will hire the dud. 5. It will be like playing in high school. No, you probably played with better athletes in high school. 6. He will not have to go to the shady parts of town to buy dope. The dealers are on the team. 7. Don’t worry about the grades. The GT way is to play ineligible players. 8. He will be called an engineer whether you major in it or not. 9. He will have the omnipotent complex. If you have a GT diploma you have the greatest sheet of paper on Earth. Engineers are the pillars of society. What a load of crap. You can use it to wipe you backside. The yellow will go well with the crap. 10. Finally, you can hope for basketball and baseball season. Oh no, the ACC hasn’t won a national title in baseball in over 50 years. Dang it, the SEC won the basketball title too. 11. At least your kid can sneak away and drive to watch the Dawgs play.
