Georgia Tech leads in the scramble for Mays receiver

Published on: 06/13/07 11:29 PM

Corey Heard, a wide receiver for Mays, has received a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech.

Heard, a 3.5 GPA student who already had offers from Kentucky and Stanford, is content to play the waiting game.

“I’d love to go to Georgia Tech,” Heard said. “I just don’t know yet. It’s a tough decision.”

Heard, who says he will study architecture if he signs with Tech, is curious to see if North Carolina jumps on his recruiting bandwagon.

“North Carolina is looking at me,” Heard said. “I know I can go there and play right away.

“Georgia Tech is my front-runner. But I’m still waiting to see what North Carolina does.”

Carver Columbus quarterback nearly says yes to Auburn

DeRon Furr came oh so close to pulling the trigger.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback seriously considered giving a commitment to Auburn during an on-campus visit on Sunday. Instead, Furr elected to put a decision on hold.

“I almost committed on Sunday, but something told me to wait a little longer and be patient,” said Furr, who also has offers from Duke, Tulane, Troy and The Citadel.

But Furr made it clear the Tigers are in the lead to land his signature in February.

“Auburn is my front-runner,” he said. “I feel real welcome there and I related to the coaches real well. I also like the campus and the academics.”

Furr also likes the fact his home in Columbus is a short drive to Auburn.

“That’s real big,” Furr said.

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was a big hit with Furr, who wants to play quarterback on the collegiate level.

“Me and my mom talked to [Tuberville],” Furr said. “He just wants me to come there and be the best player and athlete I can be.

“As soon as I come in, they said the job will be wide open and they’d want me to compete then.”

Lovejoy’s Brown dazzles at South Carolina camp

Lovejoy wide receiver Ta’Jaun Brown turned in a favorable performance under the watchful eyes of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and his staff during a camp in Columbia on Saturday.

Now the 6-foot-1, 186-pound receiver hopes his effort translates into an offer.

“The South Carolina coaches were impressed with me,” Brown said. “But they said they are taking their time on who they offer because they are only going to offer three receivers.”

Brown said he had an opportunity to meet Spurrier.

“He’s a real coach,” Brown said. “He doesn’t promise you anything. He’s a real cool, laid back coach.

“I’d like to play for him. But seeing that they’ve already got so many receivers, I still want to take my time right now. I don’t what to rush anything. I want to go where I’m comfortable.”

Brown said he is receiving considerable attention from South Carolina, Mississippi State, Akron, Eastern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State and South Carolina State. He is confident his first offer will arrive any day.

“I’m just waiting and anxious to get my first offer,” Brown said. “I’ve always wanted to be the number one receiver in the nation. I’ve wanted that since my first year in high school. I’ve just got to keep working hard.”

Stephenson’s Route on the path to Marshall

Destin Route, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound cornerback at Stephenson, has given a soft verbal commitment to Marshall.

“I talked to the coach at Marshall, and they can’t actual let him [commit] until they get a copy of his transcripts and test scores,” Stephenson coach Ron Gartrell said. “Hopefully, that’s the only thing they’re waiting for.”

Route intercepted four passes and blocked five kicks, including three punts last season.

“He’s a very explosive young many with excellent speed,” Gartrell said.

His older brother, Israel Route, is a Stephenson graduate who played college football at Tulane. He is currently attempting to land a spot on the Detroit Lions’ roster.

Bowers still solid with Clemson

The scholarship offers continue to pour in for 6-foot-6, 250-pound Daquan Bowers of Bamberg Ehrhardt (S.C).

But the mammoth defensive tackle, rated as the No. 2 overall player in the state of South Carolina by scout.com, says he intends to stick with his commitment to Clemson.

Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, N.C. State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Southern Cal have all courted Bowers.

“A lot of them came by the school in the spring wanting to know if I’ve changed my mind,” Bowers said. “They wanted to let me know their offer is still on the table.

“I told them I appreciate it, but I’m a firm commit with Clemson. These are great opportunities, but I can’t accept them.”

Bowers, who is in Clemson this week for a three-day camp, said he never felt pressured by relatives or friends to remain close to home.

“My family left the decision to me to make sure that’s where I want to go,” Bowers said. “And I think the fans are real happy with my decision.”

Corey, one great thing about North Carolina is that their football season is ALWAYS over with in late November since they rarely make it to bowls anymore! You would have the whole winter to freeze your tail off and support the basketball teams from Franklin Street. If playing in a late December bowl game is not for you, then certainly go join Butch Davis. Who knows, Butch might even stick around for more than 2 years this time!

Let’s get Corey involved in a Tickle Pile. Then we will know if he can make it here at Tech. Either you like the atmosphere here or you don’t. Admitedly Tech has some special requirements. It would be nice to know if Corey likes the closeness and intimacy of a great tickle pile.

Corey, If you want to play in 4 meaningless bowls in your collegiate career then by all means go to Tech (Seattle Bowl, Silicon Valley Classic, Humanitarian Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl, Emerald Bowl, Gator Bowl just to name the most recent.) If you wan’t to play for a head coach that has never done anything in the pros or college then by all means go to Tech. If you want to lose to Florida State every time you play them then go to Georgia Tech. If you never want to be part of a big time college atmosphere then by all means go to Tech.

When I saw the headline that GT was in the lead for a recruit I was a little worried, being anti-GT and all.

Then I read the story and saw who tech is competing against for this kid’s signature.

Oh, I’m sure he’s a nice kid that will represent honorably any school that he attends. But the fact that GT is competing against Stanford, Kentucky and maybe NC for this kid (i.e. the big boys like UF, Ohio St., S. Cal, Texas or even Tenn., Au, LSu, UGA have not come calling) tells me that he might be a great kid and all but he more than likely doesn’t have the skills to be a big time player.

I love it even more when GT competes with Troy, UAB and Vandy for players.

Tech’s biggest recruiting selling point for receivers is “Come on down, Reggie’s FINALLY gone!”

Hi Corey, if you go to KY or Stanford, your season is over even before it starts. if you considered UGA and went there, your future is over before it starts. Dumb and dumber. LOL Don’t you think it is an insult to go the schools only requre GPA 2.0 with your 3.5 GPA.

OK, so Vandy beat UGA. Tech didn’t. Again. Now to be fair, I did think “Real Men…” wasn’t being fair. I mean Tech certainly has a big time college football atmosphere at least once every other year when the Dawgs come to Atlanta.

What bowl game did Vandy go to??? Because im pretty sure we played VT and won. Oh and bh the only university in Ga that will accept you with a 2.0 is Georgia Southern. So why dont you go play some NCAA 07 on your playstation, set it on easy, and try to beat UGA with GT. Good Luck!!!

By Mr. Football

June 14, 2007 12:06 PM | Link to this

Yes, Vandy DID beat UGA last year. So TF what?

1) Do you think that Vandy has a better overall FB program than UGA?

2) Do you think Vandy has more better overall talent than UGA?

3) When do you think Vandy will ever beat UGA again?

If you took your head out of your A$$ and looked at the BIG PICTURE you’d realize that UGA is head and shoulders above Vandy in regards to overall talent and as a FB program in general.

You’d also realize that UGA was plagued last year by inexperience at key positions (primarily QB) and turnovers; issues that can be fixed.

Regardless, the fact that Vandy beat UGA last doesn’t automatically mean that Vandy is suddenly going to be competing against the powerhouses of college FB for recruits.

In other words, your reply Vandy beating UGA means nothing.

I swear, these techies never seem to grasp the big picture.

Here’s the BIG PICTURE:

1) UGA beats GT a lot more than GT beats UGA.

2) National Championships that were won way back when helmets were leather with no face mask and all players were 5-9, 165 lbs. don’t provide you ANY sort of superiority over your rivals.

If the opposite were true then Army, Minnesota, Yale and Princeton could claim football superiority over many of today’s best college FB programs. Yes, you shuold be proud of your history but that doesn’t give you bragging rights over your rival when said rival is beating you at a 7 to 3 clip.

3) Recruiting rankings are not the ultimate factor in determining the future success of any team but they do provide some insight. Meaning techies claim that recruiting rankings mean nothing. They point to teams like Utah a few years ago and Boise St. winning without high recruiting rankings.

Again, look at the big picture. How many years in a row did those teams win big and against what level of competition? Every few years a team like that steps up for one season only to fall back to the rest of the pack the next season.

For the most part teams that are consistently finishing the season ranked in the polls, especially in the top 10, are consistently recruiting top 10 classes.

Congratulations on your ranked recruiting class of most recent. Those players may even be real contributors to a win over your arch rival one day soon. But it takes more than just one good class of recruits to really stock pile talent.

You have to keep feeding the machine or you’ll end up with a win over your rival followed by another 5 or 6 losses.

4) You complain that you don’t get as much local media coverage as your arch rival. Again, look at the big picture. Your arch rival puts out at least twice as many graduates into the work force on an annual basis and combined with the non-graduate fan base probably outnumbers you 3/1.

So please, techies, remember the big picture, primarily that you are owned by your arch rival, before spouting off at the mouth.

Have a good day.

This blog is over. Nothing more needs to be said after Mr. Football’s statement. Techies, please right click, copy and paste his statement onto a new word document. Next, print it out and take it back to your all male dorm and have Akbar put it in a frame for you.

Lastly-place it on your bedside table next to the petri dish. When September rolls around, remember to read it right before you walk across p** laden North Ave on your way to the game.

Thank you

Tech does not compete for athletes that wind up going to Hargrove Mil. Acc. in order to qualify. What good is a top recruiting class if 30-40% don’t qualify? As the “Big Picture” guy just noted UGA’s fan base is much larger than ours because of the relative size of the schools and the fact that most Tech fans are graduates or have some direct association with the school. However I am very glad that the firing of our AD didn’t almost bring sown our President, that Tech items are not sold in WalMart, and that you don’t get a free UGA hat with the purchase of three cans of snuff.

Would you care to take another shot at that comment to maybe get it right next time?

Regardless, if GT had an AD that was worth a shat or one that was as revered among the fan base or even the citizens of state, the situation might be different.

One thing you will never hear a UGA AD state is that UGA can’t consistently compete with the powerhouse teams of college FB, which is essentially what Dave Braine said about GT.

A lot of confidence he had in his FB program there. All I can do is laugh off your Wal-Mart and snuff comments. Those comments represent the duds in the bottom of the ammunition barrel.

Ok, then since you are a GT fan, you must be an avid snuff user since you are glad that you don’t get a free UGA hat when you purchase of 3 cans.

Obviously since you don’t like UGA, receiving a free UGA hat would NOT make you happy. Therefore, you are glad that you don’t get a fee UGA hat when you buy your snuff.

Who cares about Georgia Tech, NC, or any other members of the Always Comical Conference?

Now that Miami and F$U are on the decline, that conference is about like the Sunbelt. I know why a kid with a 3.5 would want to go to UGA. Because they play real football in a real conference, even though we own them. Every team in the ACC gives out free shoes (F$U), plays ineligible players (GT), or hands players bags of cash (Miami).

Can you imagine a Florida/Tech series? You wouldn’t win a game for 50 years. Now run along little ACCers and leave the football talk to real programs.

“Tech will be casting a wider net this year in trying to find talented players who are likely to meet Tech’s academic entry standards.”

Now when was the last time that you heard a statement about “academic entry standards” made about UGA? And gatorbait - if football is the only reason a kid with a 3.5 GPA wants to go to UGA, he must be taking those Jim Herrick classes in HS - that explains that 3.5.

I’ll admit that last year the ACC was pitiful……BUT with the new coaches coming things look a little less gloom. Butch Davis’s first class was 15 in the naiton. Shannon was 13. O’brian going to NCST will really good since BC just doesn’t have the commitment. VT is VT. Bowden needs to retire. Grobe is an excellent coach but with little talent. And duke sucks.

Then it comes down to tech. Which as many of you other fans will protest cry and yelp they are improving. #14 class in the nation is really good for us. And since we had classes in the 30’s 40’s and 50’s we should see a significent improvement.

College Football News rated GT’s o-line #3 in the nation and rated their d-line #4 in the nation. And as everyone knows the game is won in the trench’s.

Tech will BEAT uga this year with out a doubt. You guys may win the next 2 years after but not this year. This is tech’s one shot.
