Jonathan Owens of Susan Moore High in Blountsville, Ala. committed to Georgia on Friday. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman also had offers from Georgia Tech, Troy and UAB. He spoke with Journal-Constitution staff writer Jeff Hood about his decision to commit to UGA.
Q: How much thought did you give to committing to Georgia Tech?
A: I could have went with Georgia Tech, but I just didn’t feel like that’s where I needed to go.
Q: Did it come down to Tech being an engineering school, facilities, coaches or a campus located in the middle of a large city?
A: It was a little bit of everything. I just didn’t see myself fitting in there.
Q: How would you describe your future college coach, Mark Richt?
A: He’s just a great guy. He’s real easy to talk to. I think he’s a great coach who is very approachable.
Q: Was the opportunity to play for Richt the reason you decided to commit to Georgia?
A: A pretty good bit, but not all of it.
Q: Where do you think you will fit in at Georgia?
A: I want to play and be the best there is. I’ll play wherever they put me. Right now, it looks like it will be at center or guard.
Q: What did you do during your visits to Georgia?
A: I went last weekend. I also went to a scrimmage, so I’ve been twice. The last time we visited we got to take a tour of all of the facilities, the weight room and football field. We went around Athens and I got to talk to a lot of people.
Q: Do you think you’ll catch grief from Auburn and Alabama fans for leaving the state for college?
A: Probably, but I don’t really care.
Q: How did Georgia discover you?
A: It was probably Coach [Rodney] Garner, who saw me play in one of our playoff games last year.
Q: Will your schedule allow you to attend many UGA games this fall?
A: Oh yeah, definitely. I plan on going to most every home game.

Why are the first two questions about Gtu? The kid had an offer from a big-time football school, which, as I told a young man last weekend, Gtu is not. Just because Gtu and UGA are in the same state geographically does not mean they are in the same universe in football.

Did it come down to Tech being an engineering school, coaches, facilities or being in the middle of a large city? No, it came down to Tech being a middling program in a mediocre conference and UGA being a program that plays for and wins championships in the best conference in the land. He wants to play in SEC championships games and BCS bowls instead of San Francisco and Champs Sports Bowls.

Yeah what’s up with the questions about Tech. No one cares about Tech. He wanted to play football for a team that is consistently awesome with a chance to play in a BCS Bowl, the SEC Championship every year etc., not end up in 4th place in one of the ACC divisions.

Way to do your homework and research AJC. Jonathan Owens just happens to be an OL not a WR. Great work. This is why I do not subscribe to your rag of a paper.

Who really cares about what school is mentioned where in the article? I went to Berry and read critically for content. The point is that, if this OL pans out, he appears to be just another part of what is quickly becoming (if not already) the best recruiting class of 08. 6-5 300? Sounds good to me.

critically? Is that spelled correctly? It has more to do with Crown and Coke than it does my mental acumen, I assure you.

THIS is what happens when a GaTech grad tries to become a journalist or ‘beat writer’.

I think it’s funny Hood asked about Tech. Get to see why recruits pass over Tech.

This is one reason why fans should always behave themselves and support the team even when we are losing to Vanderbuilt, although it’s not the #1 reason, which is that good fans just stick by their team.

The AJC should be called the GTAJC. You interview a UGA commitment and start off with two questions concerning Tech. Why? The kid does not want to go to Tech. Deal with it. You are running a poll about commitments backing out from a UGA offer. Where is the negative slant against GT recruiting? Oh you don’t have to. Their team sucks. In terms of engineering being the ultimate major, Forbes magazine just released its list of the highest paying jobs. How many involve engineering? Not many. UGA has programs that are directly related to the top five. No, I’m not thinking of playing in the NFL. I’m thinking of Pre-Med.

Speaking of Vanderbilt, they recruited Owens since his sophomore year but decided he wasn’t good enough to offer. Not everybody UGA lands is “elite” though the recruiting services will no doubt decide that they are just cause they’re going to UGA.

Lets not pat the almighty Colondores on the back for their recruiting genius. We see where that has gotten them over the years…

Did someone mention Vanderbilt and UGA in consecutive sentences about football recruiting? One name sums up Vanderbilt’s recruiting for me, GERNARLOW WILSON. In 8 more years he will be out of jail and ready to play.
