Jackson, Jarboe put Bulldogs on short lists

Published on: 06/11/07 10:54 AM

Georgia remains in contention to land a commitment from Heard County running back Dontavius Jackson.

According to Jackson, Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Penn State and Georgia are among his five finalists after this weekend.

Jackson, who rushed for more than 2,200 yards and scored 26 touchdowns last season, wouldn’t declare an outright leader among the group.

“They’re all probably about the same right now,” said Jackson, who anticipates making a commitment in September or October.

The 5-foot-10, 196-pound back visited Athens last week.

“I met pretty much all the coaches at Georgia,” Jackson said. “Coach [Mark] Richt is a great guy. He broke down their situation at running back. I think I’d fit real good there.”

Jackson was equally impressed following visits to Alabama and Clemson earlier this year.

“Alabama has a great fan base and coaches,” he said. “And Clemson has a good running-style offense and great academics.”

Jackson cautioned against discounting his interest in Penn State.

“I’ve got family in Pennsylvania,” he said. “Plus, they’ve got Coach [Joe] Paterno.”

Jackson, who plans to spend the next two months working out in Franklin, has little interest in attending camps this summer.

He figures there is little to prove since he already has the offers he covets.

“Why go to a camp? Most college coaches have already seen me play,” Jackson said.

Jarboe waits for Vols to offer

With scholarship offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Florida State, Cedar Grove’s Josh Jarboe is one of the nation’s most coveted wide receivers.

Jarboe claims he’s in no hurry to trim his list.

In the interim, he would like to hear from Tennessee. To date, the Volunteers have failed to extend an offer.

“I’m not leaning; I’m still wide open,” Jarboe said. “But I would like to talk to Tennessee.”

What are the odds of Jarboe playing college football close to home?

“Georgia and Georgia Tech are in my home state, so that’s why they have a little advantage,” Jarboe said. “But Georgia isn’t known for throwing the ball much. And Georgia Tech just started.”

After reiterating that no school has been ruled out, Jarboe agreed to provide his current top five.

“I really like LSU,” he said. “And then I’d go with Oklahoma, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia.”

Peachtree Ridge’s Demps goes camping

Following the completion of a one-day camp at South Carolina on Saturday, Peachtree Ridge’s Cameron Demps arrived in Gainesville the following day to take part in a camp at Florida.

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound cornerback also attended camps at North Carolina and Auburn earlier this month.

Demps said the names and faces may be different from campus to campus, but the format remains the same.

“They pretty much run the same drills and go one-on-one,” he said.

Demps currently has offers from Auburn, Florida, LSU, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Ole Miss.

“It’s all wide open right now,” Demps said of his recruitment.

Four offers and counting for Farley

Grady linebacker Darryl Farley is confident two new offers are around the corner.

“I think Louisville and Northwestern will make offers,” predicted Farley, who has already been offered by Marshall, Ole Miss, Ohio and Tulane.

Farley, who plans to study engineering or accounting, said he’s in no hurry to commit.

“I’m just waiting until the start of the season,” he said.

Palmetto State star hears hometown pleas

Jaron Brown, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound wide receiver from Cheraw (S.C.), is sporting seven Division I scholarship offers.

South Carolina, Clemson, Kentucky, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Duke and Tennessee are each officially in the running to sign Brown.

“Right now, I have no front runner,” Brown said. “It’s wide open.”

But friends and relatives are urging him to stay close to home and commit to Clemson or South Carolina.

“I hear it all the time,” Brown said. “Cheraw is a small town full of a lot of Gamecock and Clemson fans.”

Three offers for Troup lineman

Troup offensive lineman John Oliver recently added offers from Akron and South Florida to his portfolio. He already holds an offer from Arkansas.

The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Oliver said his participation at a racent Scout.com one-day camp at Georgia Tech proved beneficial for multiple reasons.

“I think that camp gave me some exposure,” Oliver said. “And I got to see my competition right now and what might be some of my teammates in the future. I think the camp helped people get to see what I can do.”

Oliver likes the idea of playing for the Tampa Bay-based Bulls program.

“I’m really interested in South Florida,” Oliver said. “They play at Auburn in week 2. I figure I might go to that game.”

Oliver plans to attend camps at Georgia, Furman and Jacksonville State this summer.

Hey Richt,

Guess if you can figure out what these define:

4 : training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character 5 a : control gained by enforcing obedience or order b : orderly or prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior c : SELF-CONTROL 6 : a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity

Then apply it!

do these guys wear helments and jersey when they drink? maybe a stint on the scout team would open the players eyes or running stadium steps with a hangover. come on guys you have got to know you are not a normal teenager/student. you are under radar from the time you say i’m going to be a bulldawg.

I wonder if any of you three retards ever drank alcohol while in college. If not, then you had a terrible experience. Just shut up and let Richt handle it. They’re 19 years old. The crazy thing is I bet all of you guys drank before 21 and the only difference is these two guys caught.

Yea Dawg Hater#1 Having an open container is so much worse than coordinating a 100 pound dope deal from your dorm like Tech cornerback Reuban Houston, and then having all of your Yellow Jacket team mates march down to the courthouse to support him. BTW where is Reuban working with his engineering degree today, or did he ever get it?

Fellows. Athens is a hundred and a quarter thousand. Small enough to care, and small enough to get caught. The only reason the AJC isn’t writing about Tech students getting caught is because of the size of Atlanta and the number of law enforcement departments. Don’t think for one minute that college students EVERYWHERE don’t drink. Granted. some just need to use a little judgement when contemplating tipping the keg. In a town the size of Athens, the newspaper (Banner Herald) probably has someone checking the arrest records every single day. How many people would that take in Atlanta?

I think Jarboe could turn out to be as good or better than Green. From watching him on video he has about everything you want in a receiver on the field. What kind of make up he has is a different question. If anybody knows him and what kind of person he is please respond. jp Can you communicate without using the word retard ? or is there a medical condition that limits you ?

Really? How much longer can an 80 year old coach? And we’re talking about a kid who can play next year (2008) at the earliest.

Well Jay,if having the most wins in “The SEC” the most powerful conference on the planet, the last 10years is being overhyped, then so be it.

By SEC is over-rated

June 11, 2007 8:10 PM | Link to this

UGA does not have the most wins against SEC teams (as tenn.DAWG implies). I would agree they probably have the most wins against very poor teams over the past 10 years because they ALWAYS play a VERY soft out of conference schedule and they also get to play soft teams in the SEC almost every year. Anyone that thinks Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Arkansas, or even Alabama (the past 8-10 years) is any good is drinking the SEC flavored Kool-Aid.

jason and “SEC is overrated”—

Who plays a harder schedule outside of SEC teams than UGA? Sure Georgia may not play "the" hardest SEC schedule, but the bottom line is that every team from the SEC plays a harder schedule than any other club in the nation. Georgia has Auburn, FLA, Tenn. every year, with a rotation of LSU and Alabama every other year. "SEC is overrated", way to list the teams on UGA's schedule that you consider to be poor, however, the problem is that only one or two of them are on Georgia's schedule every year.

Earth to Jarboe… “Georgia is not known for throwing the ball much.” Huh? See David Greene and DJ Shockley’s passing stats. UGA was breaking in a Freshman QB in ‘06, so 300+ yard games was not realistic, or wise. Trust me when I tell you… if you come to UGA you’ll get plenty of balls thrown your way… if you’re good enough!!! BTW - AJ Green the top WR in the Nation thinks UGA passes enough!

I do not want UGA to sign Jarboe if he is egotistical, out-of-touch and/or ignorant enough to say that “Georgia is not known for throwing the ball much.”

So we are going to stone UGA for open containers. Wow, how many college kids were ticketed for the same offense over the last year? 20,000 plus. The athletes have their lives viewed under a microscope. GT fans hope for any mistake to jump on. Suggestion GT fans: put your coaches under the microscope. It’s not UGA’s fault that your team is inadequate. Well maybe it is. We recruit the better athletes. We dominate you on the field and the classroom. I know that you believe engineering is the only major that matters. How silly. What did Reggie Ball major in? He couldn’t count to four. When you go to UGA, you can only decide between being a doctor, lawyer, accountant, business owner, writer, and many more majors. The next time someone is having health problems, they should ask for the local engineer to save them. Get a clue. I guess an engineer makes more than NFL player. How many of the current Bugs are majoring in engineering? Yes, less than 30%. Your program is second rate. Deal with it.

Erk Russell I won’t even try to argue how tough? Ugag’s conference schedule is but you are way off saying the pups play Bama/LSU every other year. Each SEC team plays 8 conference games with 5 of those from your own division. Ugag plays Auburn every year from the west leaving the other 5 teams in the west for Ugag to play 2 a year. So you can do the math, Ugag would only play one of those 2 about every 4-6 years and I really have to stretch my memory to remember the last time Ugag played Bama.

The SEC is overrated. If that is true, what is the ACC? Who is the defending National Champ? UGA whipped GT and VT last year. UGA matched up against FSU in the Sugar Bowl a few years ago. Who won? When you play in the SEC, any non-conference game is easier. Yes, UGA does play an inadequate non-conference schedule because they play the pathetic GT team each year. Good point. Match the teams: FSU vs UF, UF dominated them last year. UM vs UT, UT won that game, VT vs UGA, UGA whipped the Hokies. BC vs LSU, LSU would win by 30 points. Clem vs SC, 31 – 28, SEC won again. WF will lose to Vandy this year. Maryland vs Auburn. Yikes, AU wins by 30 points and that’s at College Park, N.C. State vs Alabama, SEC will dominate. Duke vs Miss State, the Bulldogs dominate. UNC vs Arkansas, what a joke. The Hogs roll. Virginia vs the Rebels. Close game in Charlottesville, but Ole Miss wins. GT vs UK. No contest. UK wins. The second best team in Georgia is Georgia Southern. In terms of the alcohol comments, UGA has women to party with. At GT, they get drunk to make the boys look more feminine which isn’t hard but that’s have they to select from. Most of the experts have UGA’s schedule rated the most difficult in the SEC and in the top ten toughest schedules in the nation. I would love to see GT play Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vandy, Florida, Auburn, and Kentucky. They would be lucky to pull one win. I mean Virginia has a killer schedule. Wyoming, Duke, North Carolina, GT, Pitt, Middle Tennessee, Connecticut, Maryland, NC state, WF, UM, and VT. Put UGA on that schedule and we will be playing for a national title.

Let me tell you something youngster. You must be watchingvolleyball or something because with the exception of Spurriers Qb troubles his teams at SC could have beaten FSU, and any other ACC teams with the exception of maybe VT. Arkansas definitely would have had a McFadden Holiday on the all crippled conference. the ACC is just that…the all crippled conference. Take a look at Football, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics, and Basketball and tell me who is the better conference. Geeez!
