With eight months to go until national signing day, Georgia’s recruiting work is more than half finished.
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons defensive end Jeremy Longo on Wednesday became the 13th rising senior to commit to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Longo said he picked UGA over Wisconsin, Alabama and LSU.
“If I didn’t find the right school, I wasn’t going to commit [early]. But I found the right school,” Longo said Wednesday night while on his way to the Atlanta airport following his two-day tour of Athens.
Longo is the second Cardinal Gibbons star to pick the Bulldogs for the class of 2008, joining teammate Blair Walsh, a kicker. Longo said Walsh’s commitment didn’t impact his decision.
What did?
“The coaching staff, the atmosphere, the facilities,” he said. “And Athens is a great town.”
UGA now has commitments from four defensive linemen: Longo, Toby Jackson, an end from Griffin; DeAngelo Tyson, a tackle from Statesboro; and Cornelius Washington, an end from Burke County.

i looked this guy up on rivals,a little over 4.6 in the 40 and a 30 something inch vertical. with that speed and leaping ability look for a lot of passes batted down.perfect guy to play end against a 4 or five wr set.he has a year of high-school left, will put on some more weight naturally,so he should keep his speed.what a recruit,he is rated at just one star, but had a breakout jr.season,so he should be rated much higher next year.what a find!with all this speed we are geting, look out gators.

I am loving all the talent we are picking up so early. If they all stay healthy until we get them to Athens it’s gonna be a #1 class. What is with the huge differences in ratings between Rivals and Scout. If you compare what we have they only agree on a couple of guys. It’s crazy. I love Rivals ranking though. GO DAWGS!

Welcome aboard Jeremy Longo. At this rate, the likes of B.J. Brand, Martin Ward, and even Bacarri Rambo may soon find that there are no more scholarships left. The staff is doing a great job of getting players who would rather commit to UGA than jerk people around their self-centered egos. Enough DEs, time to focus on more DTs. Tyson is a great one, we could use another, maybe Tim Mcgee from JC. Dawgs are rollin’.

I hope landing all these studs creates a buzz among all the other uncommited studs. Even though it takes 4 years to evaluate a recruiting class it would still be fun to pull a #1 class. Then of course all the crazy people will put pressure on these kids by expecting a NC out of them. But in Richt I trust. He’ll get the right guys.

GO DAWGS!!!!! YEAH BABY!! I’m from a small town near Statesboro and I can recall seeing two recruits grow into amazing athletes. . DeAngelo Tyson and Cornelius Washington are both beasts!! It’s great to see those young guys blossom and stay in state!! I’m so excited about the future of our program.

can’t beat Florida, lose to Vandy and give up 50 at home to Tennessee. Wow, go Dogs. I guess this is all you should be talking about-recruits that have 8 months to change their mind. What a waste of time.O gosh, I hope these recuits don’t read this negetive stuff. They just might get smart and play somewhere else.

Hey Don it’s about players. You got to have them. In this neck of the woods early commits are good. Having lived in many States I can assure you UGA is a top program with great players, coaching and facilities. Anything UGA does pertaining to football is going to excite the fans. That’s what makes this school and this conference the best. Yeah we’ve had a bad run with the Gators, and Vandy got lucky (check the records with both schools) but hey at the end of the day their still UGH!! Vandy.
JEREMY WELCOME TO THE GREATEST FOOTBALL TOWN WITH THE BEST FANS AND COACH IN AMERICA!

UGA has always gotten the elite picks…. Nothing has changed, all the fanatical dawg fans will gloat and brag. However, they can never translate the elite recruits with a National Championship! As a Gator we will always own them! Heck, I think that Chan Gailey will finally own the dawgs for the next 3 to 4 years! Oh what a beautiful world we live….

Yes, the turds do own us now. No denying that. The key word there is NOW. If you check, we still own the overall record. Its a pendulum, and it will swing back. As far as the guy talking about “negetive” recruiting, learn how to spell. Must be a tech guy. Anyone that knows anything, knows what happened last year. And anyone that knows anything knows that what the team was forced to do last year will result in the MNC in 2008. Great class CMR…keep it up. Get Tyler Love!!!!

Jeff,
Spoken like a true Dawg fan! The fact is, for the last few years GT has made that game so very very close. Heck, everyone knows that they recruit no where near the level of UGA. I think Chan Gailey does a better job of recruiting and has finally put together a class that will beat you bullpups for the next few years. Heck, anybody who beats you guys is good!

Funny you should mention how close Tech has made the game the last few years. Since the last few Gator wins over GA was close.
Heck you needed a fumble return for a touchdown to beat UGA last year. The year you won it all.
So by your reasoning, I guess GA will own FL for the next few years eh?

Hey D.E. you can’t have it both ways. You can’t tell Imus that Ugag has stayed within one play of UF every game and then turn around and say TECH staying close doesn’t matter!! Typical mutt talk, close only matters when they lose, otherwise it’s a butt whipping on their part when they win games by 2-7 points. Of course also in typical mutt fashion James Stephenson refers to a defensive TD by UF being the difference in the game when Ugag also had either a defensive TD or about a 10 yard field to work with after a UF turnover. Convenient memory there buddy!! Since you mentioned it JS I believe the difference in the TECH/Ugag game was a fumble return but I’m sure in the thimble brain of a mutt that was just a great play by the defense as opposed to Florida winning on a fluke.

Well, I see that GaDawg & jealousy has reared their ugly heads again. The Bama Nation is very fortunate & very excited to have Nick Saban as the head coach at THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA. It’s good to see GaDawg still showing his lack of Auburn class. Speaking of lack of class, there is a lot of that going on at Auburn. For those of you who don’t know GaDawg, he is a closet Auburn fan and he hangs out in an Auburn forum.

Something ironic happened to me a couple weeks ago…a dawwg fan found out i was a gator, got jealous, and came up with a snappy comment about Gator fans wearing jean shorts. Original?? Probably not original. The ironic part, 1) I have never seen a gator fan wear jean shorts…and I’ve been to games for over 20 years and 2) he was “throwing stones” while wearing pleated shorts, topsiders without socks, a plaid button down, with sunglasses around his neck (at night of course) with croakies. I think that is how a redneck UGA fan dresses up and thinnks he looks good.

Scout.com only ranks Longo as a 1-star prospect. It seems like UGA is signing too many 1-star prospects early in the process. I’d rather that we hold off and try to sign some more 3-star and 4-star guys, even if it means waiting a few more months to get them to sign

ap,i can see your point, but look at the sheet on this guy,he is 6’5”,fast,strong[benches 330],and still has a year of high school left.i think ga.was wise to get him when they could.look at the list of schools that were after him, including miami[fl}.he could have been playing at home.ga.is going after speed, thats pretty obvious, and targeting players that fit their system without worrying about how many stars are by their name.i think that is a good thing, remember that thomas davis wasn’t highly rated, and he was a senior.

One star, two star, three star, four. It’s too early to look at what Scout.com considers as “stars”. Scout.com doesn’t go to every high school and assess each talent individually. Obviously, Georgia coaches are looking at other things besides the stars at Scout.com. They went there, saw what they liked and recruited him. Don’t be surprised his stock go up during the latter part of his senior year.

JBG I don’t have pictures that I can use for you to make my point so let’s try this one more time. I never referred to who beat who how many times or anything even close to that. I said that Ugag wins close and it’s “Oh we kicked your butt.” Ugag loses close and the response is ” that was such a fluke” or “that was a close game, only one play difference.” You can’t have it both ways. Now you can go back to collecting the coins at the toll booth.

My main question about Coach Richt is why hasn’t he been on the road like this in previous Spring seasons? I think I read that he doesn’t like to do this type of recruiting and wants the rules changed, but since it looks like they aren’t going to change the rules he is changing his approach. If true, then why did he just start to take full advantage of the rules this year? Was he too busy working on being the offensive coordinator? Perhaps, I really don’t pretend to know.
I have been saying since the first day he relinquished the OC duties to Bobo that you will see a HUGE difference with the success of the Dawgs. On the field there were big wins to finish the year and in recruiting the Dawgs are #1 at this stage. Looks good so far.
As for anyone who really thinks that UGA is offering what amounts to a true 1-star guy today, then get your head outta your a$$ because our coaches (along with Bama, Miami, LSU, etc) have a good reason that they want the kids that they are after. You think some pencilneck at Scout.com knows the talent better than all those REAL professional? If you have a case where a guy gets offers from Wofford, and other AA schools and then from UGA you could at least question what the deal is, but even then NORMALLY the guys turn out to be like Tim Jennings or Thomas Davis. Again, there are no concerns about our ability to offer the best players.

DawgDad … since Auburn and Alabama are the back-up options for kids in Gwinnett that can’t get into UGA or Tech… and since Tech is only concerned with the Math portion of the SAT (you don’t have to spell to push a sliderule)… I’d have to guess UF rejected him! After all… UF has to reserve space for all those kids from New York and the Middle East, since they’re the only ones who can afford the out-of-state tuition (and don’t realize that Gainesville is no where near the beach).

For the first time in years I have no worries about the UGA vs UF game. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tebow is replaced by the Georgia game. I’ve seen Tebow enough to know he’s a one dimensional player (run, run, run), which will ultimately cause problems for UF in ‘07. If the Gators get down by 2 TD’s in the second half of a game, I don’t see Tebow’s arm as the solution.
But that’s not the real reason. It will be the 10 yr. anniversary of Bobo’s victory over the Gators and he’ll celebrate again in ‘07 as he once again calls the shots for our offense.
PS - Tech should just stick to Bowling and women’s golf.

AP Scout.com only ranks Longo as a 1-star prospect. It seems like UGA is signing too many 1-star prospects early in the process. I’d rather that we hold off and try to sign some more 3-star and 4-star guys, even if it means waiting a few more months to get them to sign
AP they had Chris Robinson as a 1 star as well before he verbally commited. If you check Rivals and Scout he is listed as a 4 star now after he went to the combine in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago and the word out is that he may be upgraded to a 5 star by the end of the season.

Ole Miss will beat UF and UGA back to back (or belly to belly) the last two weeks of September. SC or Rocky Top wins the East and ultimately Auburn laughs at everyone.

With all due respect, I understand your point but stars are crap. Let us not forget that Greene and Pollack were both “2 stars.” And there are plenty more like them at Georgia and every other school (except maybe Southern Cal). A player can have 10 stars but if there is no aptitude to learn and adjust at the next level, stars are moot. In my humble opinion…

It’s all well and good that UGA is getting “recruits” this early, but ya’ll are forgetting one other SEC GIANT— THE AUBURN TIGERS!
The Dawgs are gonna remember Brandon Cox and them TIGERS!* GRRRR!!!

HB: Once in one year dumbas*. And since you brought it up 3 out of the last six. Oh, and the reason the Tigers/WarEagle/Plainsmen didn’t play for it all in 04 was because there out of conference schedule was a joke. Bunch of pansies, afraid to play anybody.

LSU will win the SEC in a landslide this year. Regardless of who UGA gets, second place is as far as it goes. Welcome to the Peach Bowl!!

The “one star” means that the player has not been rated yet. Rivals has stated that Longo will be a high 3 star with the possibility of being a 4-star by the end of the season

Last season CMR said the two hardest hitters on the team weren’t even playing yet. He was talking about two redshirts hitting the field this year named Quinton Banks and Reshad Jones. I think they may emerge as the new BLACK AND BLUE factor in the “D” secondary. Watch out WR’S/TE’S, the middle of the field can be a dangerous place! GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why can’t we just all get along. We’re all brother football fans. Congradulations Florida for winning the National championship. Sorry Georgia Tech, the game was so close. Good job Kentucky and Vanderbilt.Good job improving last year Tennessee and scoring 51 points on us, the game we won 44 to 14, we could have easily scored 50 to 60 points but Mark Rick graciously chose to put an end to your suffering and played second and third string.
But unforunantly for yal, Georgia will win the SEC Championship this year. All Of YOU Suck, GO DAWGS

I’m a Georgia fan and all the trash and filth on these comments are pathetic for grown men to be wrambling about. If we are so proud of our program for having rock solid coaching staff which is built on personal character and intergrity, why are we talking like idiots. We should follow the lead of coach Ritch, and be a Bulldog Nation worthy of being known for being the best fans, and a place where recruits want to come because of the kind of fans we are - sincere fans, not selfish, filthy, “its all about me” fans.
Go 07’ Dawgs!!

TechIsGay-ley: When Auburn takes the field this year, you’ll see that UGA will again be the laughing stock of the SEC. Who did UGA play out-of conferenece anyway? Ya’ll can’t even beat UF to save your lives… We can boast and say that we were the only team in the nation to beat UF. When was the last time ya’ll won an SEC championship?? Wow…
Face it— UGA football sucks and it will take years to re-build since you’ll haven’t had any worthy talent in God-knows-when. Again WARRR EAGGLE!!

thanks for all the responses to my comment about Longo being a 1-star. I really wasn’t familiar with the Scout.com or Rivals.com ranking system, or even what it meant to be 1-star versus 2 stars, etc. I also didn’t realize that players’ star rankings could be upgraded. And I didn’t know that David Greene was a 2-star.
it sounds like Longo is a great recruit, and I’m glad we’ve got him.
on another topic, I was disappointed to see on ESPN last night that Kirk Herbstreit predicted Tim Tebow would have a breakout season. I really hope Herbstreit is wrong about that. I’m praying that Tebow really struggles and drags the whole Florida team down with him.
