Hunter to Notre Dame, Jackson to Georgia

Published on: 06/04/07 5:07 PM

The lure of Touchdown Jesus and everything else Notre Dame proved enough to eventually win over Omar Hunter.

The blue-chip Buford defensive tackle cited the Irish’s rich football tradition as one of the main reasons behind his decision to commit to coach Charlie Weis’ staff on Monday afternoon.

Hunter had narrowed his list of potential schools to Notre Dame and Michigan after taking unofficial visits to both along with his family last week.

Ultimately, however, the tradition in South Bend won out.

“I think it was really tough on him,” said Wolves coach Jess Simpson, who had labeled Hunter the school’s most high-profile prospect since Darius Walker. “He liked both places. In the end, though, all the things that go with Notre Dame just edged them over Michigan.”

Hunter, an agile 6-foot, 300-pounder with excellent explosiveness, plans to make his commitment a binding one during next February’s national signing day.

He’s expected to soon be fully recovered from a broken leg he recently suffered during the first day of Buford’s spring practice and ready when the fall practices.

Hunter had received scholarship offers from virtually every major program in the Southeast before recently trimming his list to Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee and Auburn.

Weis personally visited Buford in early May to better make his sales pitch.

Hunter will become the school’s second player to play at Notre Dame, following Walker, who starred at tailback for three years before leaving school early this spring in a bid for the NFL.

Tech enters Pridemore hunt

Buford linebacker T.J. Pridemore also appears closer to a college decision.

The son of former Falcons defensive back Tom Pridemore recently picked up an offer from Georgia Tech, with the Yellow Jackets, West Virginia, Tennessee and Duke ranking in his top four, Simpson said.

Bulldogs land Toby Jackson

Georgia has landed its 12th commitment over the weekend — and it’s a biggie.

Griffin defensive end Toby Jackson said he’d sign with the Bulldogs, picking Mark Richt’s program over Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-4, 244-pound Jackson is ranked by Scout.com as the 50th-best prospect in the Southeast.

Three offers for Adetona

Gainesville wide receiver Tyler Adetona has scholarship offers from Middle Tennessee, Marshall and Indiana.

“But I know a lot of schools like Clemson, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Georgia and LSU are still waiting on my SAT scores,” Adentona said.

The 6-foot-2, 182-pound Adentona has his heart set on quarterback at the next level, though some programs are looking to play him on the defensive side of the ball.

“A lot of schools are recruiting me and telling me I should play corner or safety,” Adentona said. “They want me to come up and see my defensive back skills. But I want to catch balls.

“I feel like I have good speed. And I’m stronger than most wideouts. To look at me, you might not think much. But I push up 280 [pounds] on the bench press and I just run over defensive backs.”

Tennessee linebacker waits for Dogs, Vols

Whitehaven, Tenn., linebacker Tenarius Wright confirmed the receipt of offers from Miami, Arkansas, Indiana and Mississippi State.

“And Georgia and Tennessee are taking a hard look at me,” Wright said.

Wright, who lives in Memphis but is originally from Arkansas, already has his eye on depth charts.

“I’ve got schools that I like because of their reputation but I’m really looking for a team that needs me to step into their program to contribute to the team,” Wright said. “I want to be able to step up and help out with the team.”

Troy makes pitch to Calhoun star

Adam Urbano, a 5-foot-9, 183-pound running back from Calhoun, has an offer from Troy.

“And UAB is talking about offering,” Urbano said. “Recruiting has been fun. I’ve got to go to a lot of camps and meet a lot of people and new coaches. It’s been great so far.”

Johnson solid to Tennessee

Tennessee’s commitment from Hickory (N.C.) linebacker Andy Johnson remains firm.

“It’s pretty solid right now,” the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Johnson said. “I love the recruiting class they just signed. And I have a lot of family up there. And I’ve always been intrigued by Tennessee, so that’s kind of the first team.”

Johnson is still holding offers from North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama.

Alabama defensive end on hold

Willie Bohannon, a defensive end for Blount (Ala.), continues to take a wait-and-see attitude with Alabama. The Crimson Tide offered Bohannon earlier this year.

But the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Bohannon appears willing to gauge interest from other programs before saying yes to Tide coach Nick Saban.

“A lot of other schools have said they were going to offer me, but I’m not sure,” Bohannon said. “They have been undecided about it because I play defensive end and they want to see me at linebacker. And I’ve never played that position.”

Bulls enter Furr sweepstakes

South Florida made an offer to Carver Columbus quarterback DeRon Furr last week.

The Bulls join Auburn, Tulane, Duke, Marshall, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, South Carolina and Indiana in the race to gain a commitment from the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Furr.

“I don’t have a favorite yet,” Furr said. “I’m treating everybody the same.”

Interest picks up in Flowery Branch QB Recruiting activity appears to be picking up for Flowery Branch quarterback Jaybo Shaw, who has an offer from Air Force.

“Alabama, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Florida State have all been by my school and said they want me at a one-day camp this summer,” Shaw said. “Maybe it will come down to an offer. They want me on campus so the head coaches can see me.”

Shaw is sold on the importance of summer college football camps.

“Since my sophomore year, I’ve been going to camps,” he said. “I think it really showcases my talent.”

Shaw has modest interest in Air Force but is willing to wait past a self-imposed deadline to commit.

“I’d like to make my decision before the season,” Shaw said. “But if not, I’m going to take all of my official visits where I want to go.”

should the georgia coaches hold off on a few offers. They might want to wait until the senior season’s over to offer up and coming prospects. Or they might run out of scholarships at this rate. But I’m not complaining. This class looks to be a great one. Easily one that challenges any other prior recruiting class. I also wonder if we can pick up a few more linebackers and corners. They are going to be a big need in a few years.

The Ga. class will end up in the top 3 when it’s all said and done.

jp, why wait for up and coming seniors when we are offering up and coming sophomore’s. Our staff does a great job of finding who the like through camps and video tape and there is no need to wait and see if a senior has a good year.

I think Ga. is finished with cornerbacks. It depends on what positions Bacari Rambo, Sanders Comings play. I thought they were both safety prospects with their size. If we land those 2 with Jemoris Slaughter our secondary is set with recruiting for this year.

Another great commitment. I just hope we can hang on to all of them. CMR has stated in the past that he would like to sign a QB in every class. This year’s class of QB is not very deep. So, maybe CMR will make an exception this year and not sign one (unless he is one of the few blue-chippers). I am very excited about the potential of this class so far.

I agree we should hold some scholarships open. Offering to juniors is in vogue, but it is very risky. There are some great players who have not yet matured in their junior years and some others who will not play as well as seniors.

Didn’t Air Force just sign Dublin QB Ben Cochran this winter. And now they are looking at Shaw? I know they have had good success with Georgia QB’s in the past (Dee Dowis immediately comes to mind) so maybe they like the pipeline. I just see mirror images when I see Cochran and Shaw, with Cochran having far more big-game experience than Shaw could muster.

As for UGA recruits, get ‘em early and sign ‘em when the time comes and we’ll see a top 5 or higher class come next February.

Georgia (53-13)

What team has won more SEC championships than anyone in the past 5 years?

Georgia (2)

Nice post, moron. Look up some numbers before making ridiculous posts that make you look as ignorant as you probably are.

look at the engineers come out. THese guys like to talk so much smack but we’ve beat’em 6 straight years. Is there a way that we are underperforming when we consistenly beat the tarps out of the nerds with our top 10 recruiting classes? Do they realize we play in the ACC, i mean SEC. I wish we were playing in the ACC, then we could beat up on inferior competition day in and day out. God I hate these nerds. They wanna clown on us for underperforming but yet it is they who couldn’t seem to win in a terrible year for the ACC with the best player in the nation in quite a long time on their team. WHy do the nerds consistently come and tell us how bad we are? Is it a inferiority complex? are they jealous that we can land top 10 recruiting classes? Do they realize we have won 3 SEC titles in 7 years. I guess that might be underachieving for them. After all they are Georgia Tech with the great football tradition they have.

I’m just glad we got a committment that weighs-in above 190 and is taller than 6-0’. Getting a little scared of the 165 lb. commits that we hope will add bulk.

Hey JP,

Little Scoreboard up date for you son. Our last National Championship in Football was 1990, UGA’s was when??? I will give you credit for six years in a row……that’s the 4 fingers plus your thumb on the left hand and 1 finger or your thumb on the right and that will give you six. We do not have a complex, just a lack of respect.

Hey Burdells Brother,

We keep you butts six years in a row…and you have a lack of respect for Georgia? If so it is misdirected…it should be a lack of respect for your baby bugs.Lack of respect for your coach, your players.Because Tech plainly cannot get the job done. GaTech will always be a distant #2 in football with regard to this state.

As for national championships…1990 was 17 years ago. Both teams could use a fresh one.Problem is you guys cannot even win the ACC much less a National Championship.

By Burdell's Brother

June 4, 2007 9:11 PM | Link to this

Distant #2 huh?

How about these numbers:

National Titles

Tech - 4 UGA- 1

Bowl Records

Tech 22-13 .629 winning % UGA 22-16-3 .537 winning %

Yeah you have your 6 in a row and the head to head, but from the looks of it, you guys have some work to do to catch up. With the numbers like above I guess we can live with #2..

LOL

By National Championship?? GT?

June 4, 2007 9:37 PM | Link to this

G Tech stop talking about titles that aren’t recognized by the NCAA. If you look at titles that matter(one recognized by the NCAA) then you have one(1) and thats in Tennis. If we count ones not recognized then UGA has Five (5).

Come on Tech fans! I know you guys have school spirit and HATE the Bulldogs and as a rival I understand that but come on! You had the chance to win the ACC last year and couldn’t beat, not FSU, Miami, or Va Tech, but STINKING WAKE FOREST!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When is the last time WF football mattered to anyone of relevance? You had the best player in the nation last year and couldn’t beat WF. You can blame it all on Reggie Ball but its funny that he never played on the d-line, linebacking corp, or the defensive backfield. Interesting……………. Come on Tech fans, don’t use the Nat’l Championship thing either. 1990 is one-year from being two decades ago in the 80’s just like UGA’s Nat’l Champ year in 1980 so don’t come with that crap. Win your conference in THIS DECADE and get a BCS Bowl berth and just maybe we can have something to debate about. Until then, football wise, yes UGA has the edge, a big one!!

Hey TCM — Yeah, we lost to Wake - who won the ACC.

Ya’ll lost to Kentucky and Vandy this year. Which is worse?

And winning 7 in a row will be tougher now that your best player (Reggie Ball) is no longer in the picture.

Putting any weight in these recruiting blogs is for people without a life. Who really gave a rat’s behind when TECH signed Brooking or Ugag signed Pollack but those guys panned out to be dominant players and so many of these “blue chippers” can’t do much more than carry the water pale. If you go by recruiting polls then Ugag should beat TECH by 20 or more every year but are 3 plays from 3 losses in the last 3 years. Three wins by a grand total of 13 points. If you run fast or are very large you’ll probably get a high rating but they don’t measure heart, intelligence, or being coachable. Ugag better be shaking the bushes for some good O-line help.

Oh that’s easy. Losing to the team that lost to Vandy and Kentucky despite having a senior QB and #2 NFL draft pick on your side. GT football=complete and utter laughable joke. You Tech nerds should speak when spoken to. Seriously.

Carter is just setting Georgia up for the “underachiever” tag after we fail to win 50 games in a row and four national titles. We all know that’s what it will take for him to be impressed with Georgia football.
