Thursday: Top juniors ready to run

Published on: 02/15/07 10:52 AM

On your mark … Get set …

Most of the state’s top juniors will be on display Sunday when they run 40-yard dashes and try to impress recruiting analysts at a high school combine co-sponsored by Scout.com at Duluth’s Competitive Edge Sports facility.

The event isn’t open to the public, but check back here afterward for reports on who turned in the fastest time, who shot up in the rankings and who may have gotten a better scholarship offer out of the experience.

Among those expected to work out:

A.J. Harmon, a 315-pound offensive lineman from Jefferson County who already has offers from Florida and Georgia, among others. “Right now, I am trying to talk to some people who have been through this,” Harmon told the AJC recently. “I want to talk to people like Chris Little and why he picked [Georgia] and see what they were looking for and what I should be looking for.”

Josh Jarboe, a Cedar Grove wide receiver who has offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Virginia Tech. “He’s what everybody is looking for in a receiver,” Cedar Grove coach Ray Bonner said. “He can do it all.”

Richard Samuel, a running back/linebacker from Cartersville’s Cass High who recently became the sixth junior to say yes to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt.

Toby Jackson, a defensive tackle from Griffin who has offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee. “Florida State and Tennessee are in the lead right now, but something might change in the future,” Jackson said. “I want get in there and concentrate on my education and have a successful season. I expect myself to go in there and get some action early.”

Martin Ward, a running back from Mount Zion who already has committed to Georgia.

Dontavius Jackson, a Heard County running back with early offers from Florida, Georgia Tech and Kentucky. “They’re all about the same right now,” says Jackson, who expects more offers to roll in soon.

Scout.com analyst Scott Kennedy said he’s most interested in comparing the three junior tailbacks expected in Duluth: Samuel, Ward and Dontavius Jackson.

“They’re three different kinds of backs in size and speed,” Kennedy said. “Also, Toby Jackson and A.J. Harmon are two of the best big athletes in the state, and they’ll get to show off their agility in front of one of the top training staffs in the world.”

Recruiting tid-bits from Gwinnett County

— Peachtree Ridge defensive lineman Trey Trip will be a preferred walk-on at Ole Miss, according to his father, Harold. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder passed on offers at smaller schools for a chance to play in the SEC, Harold Trip said.

— Greater Atlanta Christian offensive lineman Devin Swirk has committed to play football at Faulkner University in Montgomery, GAC coach Jimmy Chupp said. Swirk is the sixth Spartans football player to commit this month.

Hey Scout, thanks for letting them post that info…I subscribe to the “OS” and sometimes miss your content and perspective, but now that I know I can get it here for free, well, that’s cool! JK, copyright is copyright and this shouldn’t happen.

I’m telling you this Jeff guy is the most unprofessional beat writer (hacker) I have ever seen. Your right scout ,he goes to your site as well as Rivals and steals your info that you generated from your hard work and contacts.

Yep, I know Chad Simmons and everytime I ask him if he has talked to AJC, he laughs and says that Jeff guy has not only not asked his permission, but he has never even talked to UGASports.com at all. I know that you fans love the “coverage,” but some of us pay for this knowledge and even more important, some of us put in actual hard work to getting this info. This is worse than stealing music, because we are blue collar guys who don’t make much to begin with, and do this because we are passionate about the industry. So you can see why myself and others would be upset that someone who works for a well known publication such as the AJC would take our stories for subscribers and put it out for free. The Grapevine was a fanboy site, this is very different. Hope he changes, but I doubt he will. Oh yeah and what is the over/under on how many posts this will take to become a UGA vs GT vs rest of SEC flame war? I say ten.

because people subscribe to and work for sites that gather this info.

I say keep it up Jeff. You are just relaying condensed information that you take the time to research while the rest of us do our jobs. Keep posting!

that’s not research, its stealing. Its just as easy to get that info from Rivals or Scout. Just Google it and read. What if your JOB was one of these sites and you lost your job because your customer base just read what another guy stole. Its unethical! I mean where do you think Jeff gets his info? By subscribing. Freebies might be convenient but it’s still wrong and it is silly that he should get any credit for this. Even when people post ESPN insider info on message boards, they do not imply that they are doing any journalistic research.

HA! I like it! I’m so sick & tired of all of this ‘become an insider’ crap that I could puke. FREE speach, anyone?? lol

I agree MR HAHA,

I wonder how much these “insider” outfits are paying some of these kids and/or “family members” for this cutting edge info. Second point - how soon will it be before it comes out that they are paying for this crap. Then what happens? What a joke!!!

I’m with you B-dawg! Anyone who pays a subscription to rivals or scout has GOT TO GET A LIFE! Are you kidding me? These sites are an absolute ripoff. And here’s a newsflash to SP and Kyle, and the rest of you losers: You don’t have any more of a right to this information than Jeff, the ajc, or anyone else. I was watching ESPN news this morning and they were reporting ont he Tim Hardaway comments. THEN, I got in my car and Jim Rome was talking about it too. Can you believe he would watch ESPN News and steal the information for his own topics! Wake up people.

Well, with all of Scout’s message boards in a perpetual state of crashing since their inept attempt to transfer from the EZBoards platform to something they never tested, I think Jeff is doing us a service allowing us to read information that we’d only get a server error message for if we tried to read over at Scout. heaps of laughter

I appreciate the time that sites like Rivals and Scout put into reporting on these high sschool student-athletes, but in many ways you have gone too far. Not only you , but other sports journalist too. Stop making these kids celebrities before they hit the college field. The press conferences for announcements are a bit over the top. Then everyone wonders why they think they are larger than life.

then dont be a dumbass and make people pay for the info! hello problem solved make this public access and all your problems go away. Hes doing the other “blue collar” workers who cant afford to pay to find out where some high school ametures are going. i dont get how you can make money off them but they cant get any?! someone needs to talk to the ncaa

What’s unethical is that he’s not crediting Scout or Rivals for the information, assuming that’s where he gets it. The indication from the quotes is that he spoke to those quoted directly, although in AJ Harmon’s case, it says “Harmon told the AJC recently …” But it’s plenty common to see a story appear in the Wall Street Journal and then see the NY Times reference it by noting that the Journal published it. I don’t have a problem with that; once you put it out there, it’s public. If Jeff is getting the info from Scout or Rivals, he should credit them. But it’s duplicitous for Scout and Rivals to make information public and then turn around and try to dictate what the public does with it. In that sense, they’re being like the record labels and look how well they’re doing.

I hate the AJC. They are a true example of how bad a monopoly can be. I have cancelled my subscription and I now advertise in the Gwinnett Post. That said, I will read the paper for free on the web!

But…

The recruiting web sites are no angels either. I know they encourage recruits not to commit early. They offer more stars and higher rankings to those that wait to commit.

So, what do I think? I could care less. Let them both fight it out and destroy each other.

I subscribe to rivals, scout, and espn insider and have no problem reading my hometown newspaper. i am glad they have someone doing a blog for the ajc. it does not bother me at all. i have more to worry about than who is reporting about a certain recruit, and who gets it out faster. 9 bucks a month for a rivlas sub give me a break thats nothing. i go to the ajc before any of the other websites everyday. people get a life.
