Hanks: ‘I don’t think I’m going to Athens’

Alabama made a scholarship offer to Norcross wide receiver Darius Hanks on Sunday during his official visit to the Crimson Tide’s campus. Hanks told the AJC late Sunday he is leaning toward committing to Alabama.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Hanks said Alabama coach Nick Saban delivered the good news.

“Coach Saban actually told me,” Hanks said. “I was pretty surprised, but happy that they offered me.”

Hanks said Saban made a favorable impression during his weekend visit to Tuscaloosa.

“He’s a great coach with a lot of tradition and winning,” Hanks said. “He told me to go home and talk about [the offer] with my parents, then call back later this week.”

Hanks said he will likely cancel his visit to Georgia this weekend.

“I don’t think I’m going to Athens because they’re recruiting me as a defensive back,” said Hanks, who would play wide receiver for Alabama if he signs with the Tide.

Tennessee State lands Cedar Grove’s Dowd

James Dowd, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker/defensive end for Cedar Grove, has committed to Tennessee State.

Dowd transferred to the DeKalb County school from Ohio late last summer.

“James is a student of the game,” Cedar Grove coach Ray Bonner said. “He is football-savvy. He’s also a good student.”

Heyward back from UGA; decision looms

Cameron Heyward of Peachtree Ridge fought flu-like symptoms as he returned home Sunday afternoon from his official visit to Georgia.

The defensive tackle attended Sunday’s Georgia-LSU game at Stegeman Coliseum, but departed at halftime.

“It was a good visit,” said Charlotte Heyward-Blackwell, who accompanied her son on his trip to Athens. “He really enjoyed spending time with his host.”

According to Heyward-Blackwell, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State all remain in contention to sign her son.

“We haven’t had a chance to narrow it down,” she said. “We’ll talk about it soon.”

Heyward plans to visit Ohio State on Feb. 2.

Peachtree Ridge star switches from Navy to Tulane

Phillip Davis, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound defensive back from Peachtree Ridge, committed to Tulane following a visit to the Green Wave’s campus.

“It was getting down to the wire, so he figured he better go ahead and visit,” Peachtree Ridge coach Blair Armstrong said. “I got the message on Friday that he decided to commit to Tulane.”

Davis, who had earlier committed to Navy, played a major role in Peachtree Ridge earning a share of the Class AAAAA championship last season.

“Phillip is extremely fast,” Armstrong said. “He ran a 4.3 [in the 40] electronically timed at the Nike combine at Georgia this past summer.

“He led our team in interceptions as a junior and had the second-most last season. He has a fantastic ability to return punts. He offers a lot as an athlete.”
