Tech tops Georgia in top 100 recruits

Scout.com has released its new top 100 player rankings. The list includes 11 future Southern Cal Trojans, five Florida recruits, two Georgia Tech prospects and just one player who says he’ll sign with Georgia.

Five Peach Staters made Scout’s top 100 cut:

— Creekside cornerback and Tennessee recruit Eric Berry (No. 7)

— Greater Atlanta Christian running back and Georgia recruit Caleb King (No. 19)

— Uncommitted McIntosh County Academy defensive end Allen Bailey (No. 46)

— Greene County quarterback and Georgia Tech recruit Josh Nesbitt (No. 76)

— Kell running back and Georgia Tech recruit Jonathan Dwyer (No. 95)

Shortly before 4 p.m., I posted a complete college-by-college breakdown of the top 100 recruits.

We’ve also got Monday news on:

— All of the holiday weekend’s big commitments

— Peachtree Ridge star Cameron Heyward, who just back from a visit to LSU

— Marist standout Jennings Hester’s early impressions of new Alabama coach Nick Saban

— Which out-of-state stars Tech is still pursuing

— An Alabama kicker who’s getting looks from a traditional I-AA power (Georgia Southern) and a I-A heavyweight (Southern Cal)

As always, if you have someone whose recruitment you’d like us to update, drop me a line and we’ll see what we can do.

Heyward vists LSU, remains undecided

Peachtree Ridge’s Cameron Heyward, who arrived back in Atlanta on Sunday at 8 p.m. from a weekend visit to LSU, remains undecided on where he will play college football.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound defensive tackle said he came away impressed with the Tigers’ campus in Baton Rouge, but added that he’s ready for next weekend’s stop in Gainesville with national champion Florida.

“It was a pretty good visit this weekend,” Heyward said. “I enjoyed it and I got a lot of my questions answered.”

Heyward had plenty of praise for LSU coach Les Miles.

“He’s really down to earth,” Heyward said. “He has great values and is a family man.”

Georgia, Florida, LSU and Ohio State each remain in contention to sign Heyward on Feb. 7.

“They’re all equal,” he said.

Fisher: Mississippi State missed the boat

Mississippi State may have fumbled an opportunity to land 6-foot-4, 280-pound offensive tackle Mark Fisher of Goodpasture High in Madison, Tenn.

Fisher had an official visit planned to the Starkville campus this weekend.

But no one from the Bulldogs coaching staff called to confirm the trip, the player told Scout.com.

“I never got up with anyone,” Fisher told Scout. “I decided not to go after all.”

Fisher’s talents remain in high demand.

He will tour Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 19 followed by a visit to Marshall the following weekend.

Fisher has offers from Louisville, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Furman lands Washington County standout

Cardenal Coleman, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker at Washington County, has committed to Furman. Coleman was recruited to play fullback for the Paladins.

“He has tremendous character, leadership and is a player,” Washington County coach Joel Ingram said. “He’s the type of player who will make [Furman] a better place by the time he leaves.”

Georgia Southern enters mix for all-state lineman

AJC all-state offensive lineman Travis Fleming of Fitzgerald received a scare in last month’s North-South all-star contest when he suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

But the 6-foot-3, 275-pound Fleming said this weekend he was diagnosed with a knee sprain. Fleming was required to wear a knee brace for the past two weeks, but he discarded the device two days ago.

“I feel good now,” said Fleming, who hopes to begin running later this month.

Fleming has offers from Tennessee-Chattanooga and Troy. He is also being courted by Georgia Southern, UAB and Wofford. The mammoth tackle will visit Chattanooga next week.

If it comes down to Chattanooga or Troy, which school would Fleming choose?

“I’d like to go to Chattanooga,” he said. “But I’m waiting to see what happens.”

In the interim, Fleming has been relegated to spectator status during the Fitzgerald basketball season. He hopes to resume his duties at center for the Purple Hurricanes before the playoffs arrive.

Brooks Co. star leans toward Troy, hears from FSU

Florida State and South Florida are interested in Brooks County linebacker/fullback Donnell Golden, who already has an offer from Troy State.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Golden was Brooks County’s leading rusher during his sophomore and junior seasons before focusing on defense during his senior campaign.

“He’s leaning toward Troy,” Brooks County coach Ryan Branch said. “And I think they want him to play outside linebacker.”

Brackett draws interest from West Georgia, others

Dalton’s Will Brackett, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive lineman, is drawing interest from Tennessee-Chattanooga, Shorter and West Georgia.

“Will brings a lot of experience,” Dalton coach Ronnie McClurg said. “His future is ahead of him in this game. He’s matured into a great football player.”

Busy month ahead for five Creekside seniors

Several Creekside seniors will be busy making official visits this month.

AJC player of the year Eric Berry is on his way back today from Tennessee, where he has already committed to play his college football.

Kevious Watkins, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound offensive lineman, has visits planned later this month to UAB and Troy State.

Defensive back Kemaray Funderburk visited Bowling Green this weekend and has plans to tour Hampton and Wofford later this month.

Linebacker Danny Evans will drop in on Morgan State and Presbyterian during the next two weekends.

AJC all-state offensive lineman Hannibal Ruiz has been offered by Clark Atlanta.

Louisville, Oklahoma St. like Washington Co. lineman

Louisville, Oklahoma State and Florida International are showing interest in Shaquan Hicks, a 6-foot-3, 320-pound offensive lineman from Washington County.

Hicks, an AJC all-state pick, has received an offer from Middle Tennessee State. He is scheduled to visit Oklahoma State on Jan. 26.

“Shaquan has extreme athletic ability and great feet,” Washington County coach Joel Ingram said.

Dogs, Buckeyes, Vols offer Creekside junior

Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee have already made offers to Creekside junior Terrance Parks, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound cornerback with 4.4-second speed in the 40.

But Creekside coach Kevin Whitley doubts Parks will commit prior to his senior season at the Fairburn-based school.

Despite suffering a knee injury during his sophomore campaign which required surgery, Parks is still one of the most coveted defensive backs in the class of 2008.

“He’s got all the physical tools,” Whitley said.

Jackets, Vols want Dalton kicker to walk on

Georgia Tech and Tennessee are both encouraging Dalton kicker Adrian Mora to become a preferred walk-on.

But Dalton coach Ronnie McClurge believes Mora is more interested in an athletic scholarship. Ohio or Valdosta State could be an alternative.

“He wants his college education paid for,” McClurg said.

With a 3.9 GPA at Dalton, Mora is in position to apply for a HOPE scholarship and attempt to walk-on at Tech.

Mora connected on a pair of 54-yard attempts this season for the Catamounts. He also averaged 42.3 yards on 33 punts.

“I’ve been very blessed to have some great kickers here,” McClurg said. “He’s as good at this same stage as anybody I’ve ever had.”
