A look at the funeral service held Monday for Skip Caray, the longtime Braves broadcaster who passed away last week.
QUOTABLE
"We're not gathered here just to celebrate a voice, but the life of the man behind that voice. Thank God for memories. Years from now, the ripple of Skip's life will still be moving onward and outward."
—- Monsignor Tom Kenny
"We often get tapes in this business from broadcast-ers who want to make it in the major leagues. A lot of them are trying to sound like Vin Scully or Al Michaels. We've never, ever received one from anybody trying to sound like Skip. Nobody can."
—- Broadcast partner Pete Van Wieren
"There was a memory a day in the 36 years I knew him. My friend Skip really lived."
—- Former Atlanta Flames broadcaster Jiggs McDonald
"It was obvious [in the 1980s] that [Caray and broadcast partner Pete Van Wieren] were bigger than we were. Skip was always able to inject humor into any situation. Back then we needed all the laughs we could get."
—- Braves pitcher Tom Glavine
PALLBEARERS
Pallbearers were sons Chip and Josh Caray, director of Braves team travel Bill Acree, nephew Eric Stanger, David Woodbury and Braves players Jeff Francoeur, Chipper Jones and Brian McCann
SPEAKERS
Those who spoke at the service were broadcasting partners Pete Van Wieren and Ernie Johnson Sr., friend and doctor Charlie Wickliffe, former Atlanta Flames announcer Jiggs McDonald, Braves president John Schuerholz and Braves pitcher John Smoltz
ATTENDEES
Among those in attendance: Longtime team photographer Walter Victor, former basketball coach and TNT announcer Dick Versace, former major leaguer and announcer Tom Paciorek, local broadcaster Bob Neal, former Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, TNT broadcaster Ernie Johnson Jr., broadcaster Hubie Brown, former Hawks coach Mike Fratello, broadcaster Brad Nessler, Hawks announcer Steve Holman, Braves chairman emeritus Bill Bartholomay, Braves general manager Frank Wren, Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell and former Braves players Phil Niekro, Brian Jordan, Ron Gant, Javy Lopez, Keith Lockhart, Otis Nixon, Charlie Leibrandt and Rick Camp.
ONLY FITTING
One of Caray's pet peeves, road work —- this at Peachtree and 14th Street —- delayed the Braves team bus on its way to the service. It didn't arrive until 4 p.m., when the service was scheduled to start.
