Georgia Tech kicker Shawn Davis can breathe a little bit easier. Coach Paul Johnson said Wednesday that he has won the kicking job. For now, at least.

“I think for now,” Johnson said. “We still kick in practice every day, but for right now, he’s probably the kicker.”

Davis and freshman Brenton King had competed since the beginning of the preseason to be the starting kicker. Since his rough start against Tennessee in the season opener, he has made both of his field goals, from 34 and 21 yards. He also had a make from 40 yards that was taken off the scoreboard when Tech accepted a penalty. He has made 16 of 17 extra-point tries and is averaging 58.6 yards on kickoffs, which is to about to the opposing 6-yard line.

Johnson put King into a game for the first time Saturday against North Carolina. He made a field goal and an extra point.
