Hawks wing DeAndre Bembry will miss 4-6 weeks with a strained right tricep. The Hawks announced the news Wednesday.

The injury was revealed by an MRI exam at Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center on Friday. Bembry has been working at the Hawks’ facilities during much of the offseason. He will be held out of basketball activities during the down time, which will include the start of training camp later this month and possibly the start of the regular season. A six-week absence means Bembry would return date Oct. 25.

According to a person familiar with the situation, the injury to Bembry’s tricep occurred “recently” and there are no long-term implications.

The 23-year-old Bembry was a first-round pick of the Hawks last year out of St. Joseph. He played sparingly as a rookie, averaging 2.7 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 9.8 minutes over 38 games.

Bembry was impressive playing for the Hawks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League in July. He appeared in four games and averaged 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.8 steals in 26.3 minutes.

Bembry figured to play an increased role next season as the Hawks have rebuilt the roster with a core of young, developing players.

“So many things are happening with young guys coming in and older guys leaving,” Bembry told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution from the Las Vegas Summer League. “I would love for the older guys to stay, but I would also love to be out there. That’s where the team is headed with a number of younger guys.”

The Hawks are scheduled to begin the coming season with media day Sept. 25 immediately followed by the first three days of training camp at the University of Georgia.

There is an earlier start to the NBA season. The Hawks open the preseason Oct. 1 at the Heat and the regular season Oct. 18 at the Mavericks.
