Braves quotes after shutout loss to Phillies

A day after scoring 10 runs, the Braves offense was quieted by Nick Pivetta and the Phillies in a 3-0 loss at Citizens Bank Park on Monday.

Nick Williams hit a fence-scraping solo home run off Mike Foltynewicz in the fourth inning. Aaron Altherr’s pinch-hit two-run shot off Shane Carle provided insurance in the seventh.

Here’s what the Braves said after the game:

Manager Brian Snitker

On Foltynewicz:

“Overall it was good. He ran into a lot of deep counts. But it’s one pitch, one run. If you don’t score, it’s hard to win.”

On Pivetta:

“He was throwing a lot of breaking balls. He was hitting with a lot of breaking balls. He was elevating his fastball and had really good command, I thought. Early on I thought maybe we’d get him out of the game. He had 50 pitches or more after two, then he did a really good job catching up and staying around that game a long time.”

On Odubel Herrera, who had two hits:

“A couple of those hits almost bounced (on home plate) and a foot out of the strike zone. He finds a hole and it’s like you can’t throw it high enough or low enough. He covers a lot of ground. That bat stays in the zone a long time. He puts the bat on the ball and gives himself a chance.”

Starter Mike Foltynewicz

On his outing:

“It was a little different. Like that first inning, I had no idea where the ball was going, but I made an adjustment. Then after that we came back and started being aggressive attacking guys. But just one pitch really, and I knew I was upset about that because just the way Nick was throwing, I knew I had to not let anyone score because the night he was having tonight, you have to tip your cap to him. He threw well.”

On the Phillies, who’ve opposed Foltynewicz four times:

“Yeah, this is going to be a good one for a long time, especially with how young we are. … You see a lot of similarities. Four times in the first few months, a little handful but it’s fun. It’s been a good showing for all the games we’ve played.”

On the Phillies’ offense:

“They can be super aggressive. And at the same time, they can be really patient. So when you face these guys, it’s like a chess match, so they’ve got to pick how to come at me. Today they were a little patient because I was wild as heck in the first couple innings. Then they got going after that. You just have to really watch for them, watch their swings in the middle of the game. … It’s a little chess match but at the same time it’s fun because they’ve got some good hitters over there.”

On Herrera:

“You saw today, the two pitches – the second one, the curveball, I thought he didn’t swing and all of a sudden a ball fizzes by me and I’m like ‘Holy cow, how did he hit that?’ When you’ve got a guy like that who can foul off 98 and inside, put a curveball in the dirt in play for a hit, it’s a great hitter.”

Outfielder Nick Markakis

On Pivetta:

“Just pounding the zone. He’s got that curveball working. He’s got good life on his fastball. He didn’t leave too many pitches over the plate to do damage on. It’s one of those days you have to tip your cap and move on.”

On Foltynewicz:

“He was great. He pounded the zone. He didn’t give too many free passes and when he did he got himself out of some jams. Overall he threw a good ballgame. Just we couldn’t get any runs to support him.”

On Carle:

“You’re not going to dominate every day. He left a slider over the plate, backed up on him. He put a pretty good swing on it and tacked on two runs there.”
