Braves option Gearrin to Triple-A; activate Ayala - updated

The Braves optioned reliever Cory Gearrin to Triple-A Gwinnett after Thursday’s game against the Marlins and activated right-hander Luis Ayala from the disabled list.

Gearrin was 2-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 37 games on the season but had appeared to lose favor in recent weeks. He pitched only once in nearly two weeks, giving up two runs in the eighth inning of a 6-3 loss to the Marlins Wednesday night. His previous outing came June 23 in Milwaukee when he walked the only two batters he faced.

Since June 6, Gearrin has given up eight earned runs in six innings over seven outings, allowing eight walks (with six strikeouts) and a .360 opponents’ batting average.

Ayala will rejoin the Braves for the first time since late April when he placed on the disabled list with anxiety disorder, stemming from problems with high blood pressure. He has been on a minor league rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A Gwinnett. Ayala gave up up six earned runs in 8 1/3 innings over eight appearances for Gwinnett but five of those runs came in one outing, Sunday against Norfolk. He pitched a scoreless inning on Wednesday.

Ayala was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five games for the Braves in April.
