Thorburn gets new linemates for a while

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Chris Thorburn was on the move Saturday -- with new line partners. For a while.

The Thrashers forward skated with Ilya Kovlachuk and Nik Antropov to start the game against New Jersey. Thorburn, who played on the fourth line and on the penalty kill all season, saw a little time on the line near the end of Thursday’s game against Dallas.

Thorburn’s move came as Bryan Little was one of the Thrashers scratches against the Devils. He, along with defensemen Anssi Salmela and injured Mark Popovic, were out.

The lines did not last the entire game as Thrashers coach John Anderson juggled the combinations throughout the game.

Going back to Pavelec

After stopping 42 of 47 shots in Thursday’s 6-5 overtime win over the Stars, Ondrej Pavelec got his second straight start in goal Saturday.

“Did you see him play the last game?” Anderson said of his decision. “It’s not rocket physics.”

Pavelec beat New Jersey 4-2 on Oct. 16. He didn't beat them Saturday, dropping a 5-4 decision as the Thrashers were outshot 42-26.

"We did not play 60 minutes," Pavelec said. "Five goals is five goals, no matter how many shots you face."

Measuring stick

The Devils are tied for first in the NHL in wins (25) and points (51). Asked before the game whether it would be a measuring stick on how far the Thrashers have come this season, Anderson said: “I would think so. Anytime you play the top-echelon teams, you have to put your best foot forward or you’re going to get stomped on.”

Etc.

Anderson said that goaltender Kari Lehtonen has begun skating following two offseason back surgeries. ... Maxim Afinogenov was named the Player of the Month for November by the Atlanta Thrashers Fan Club. He was given a plaque following Saturday’s morning skate. ... The fan club also held a silent auction to raise money for the Atlanta Thrashers Foundation. Autographed Build-A-Bears, with personalized holiday greetings from each player, were auctioned.
