Ex-Laker Josh Powell signs with Hawks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Hawks on Monday announced the signing of an ex-Laker center. No, not Shaquille O'Neal, rumored to be coming to Atlanta.
Josh Powell, a graduate of Riverdale High School who attended North Carolina State, won't sell quite as many tickets, but the Hawks hope he can provide quality minutes backing up Al Horford and Josh Smith.
Powell, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward/center, averaged 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds during his two years with the Lakers. Undrafted out of college, Powell spent several seasons in Europe before signing with the Dallas Mavericks in 2005. The Hawks will be the 27-year-old Powell's sixth NBA team.
"Obviously, I followed the Hawks quite a bit growing up, and the excitement during the Dominique [Wilkins] years was a great thing to watch," Powell said in a news release. "We have to continue to get better and hopefully I can bring a little bit of what I’ve learned from my days with [the] Lakers to the team."
Terms of Powell's contract were not disclosed.
