Redman struggles to replace Ryan

His first pass skidded off the Georgia Dome turf at the feet of running back Jerious Norwood.

Filling in for starting quarterback Matt Ryan would not get much better, as Redman and the offense never got into a rhythm. The  Falcons needed a touchdown pass with three seconds left to avoid a shutout.

"We did not operate effectively offensively," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "I know that Chris's numbers were not what we needed them to be."

Redman, who could be starting for the reminder of the season if Matt Ryan doesn't recover from turf toe, completed 23 of 44 passes for 235 yards, two interceptions and one touchdown.

Ryan, who guided the Falcons to the playoffs last season, was on the sideline with a boot on his right foot and was noticeably limping when he walked.

Redman, making his 11^th career NFL start, had a quarterback rating of 56.5. He entered the game with an 80.6 career rating. He's now 4-7 as a starter.

Redman said he's ready to carry on and lead the Falcons down the stretch in their quest for a wildcard berth and a winning season.

"That’s my job," Redman said. "I'm going to keep fighting."

Redman was under relentless pressure by the blitz-happy Eagles. The Eagles only had two sacks and two quarterback hurries. But they had 12 passes defended, included five batted down at the line of scrimmage.

"They are known for their pressure," Redman said. "We knew it was going to happen. They brought some good pressure."

The Eagles scored on their opening drive of the second half to make it 20-0. The Falcons had to take to the air exclusively.

On the Falcons ensuing drive, Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown intercepted a Redman pass intended for Marty Booker and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown.

"He just sat on the route," Redman said. "We had a quick route called and I tried to get the ball out early."

Redman would like to have some of those tipped passes back.

"There were some big plays if those balls don't get tipped," Redman said. "But that's football."
