Braves suddenly lack pitching, defense and a clue
When (TV): Doubleheader today; first game 4:10 p.m., second game 7:40 p.m. (SPSO)
Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5
Probable starting pitchers
Game 1: Braves RH Julio Teheran (0-1, 5.19 ERA) vs. RH Chris Schwinden (major league debut)
Game 2: Braves LH Mike Minor (4-2, 4.09) vs. RH Dillon Gee (12-5, 4.48)
About the Braves:
Batting: Matt Diaz hit .545 (6-for-11) in his first five games back with the Braves after be obtained from the Pirates. Brian McCann is hitting .292 against right-handers this season. Chipper Jones is hitting .349 (30-for-86) with seven home runs and 14 RBIs in 28 games since the All-Star break.
Pitching: Teheran will make his third major league start. The 20-year-old prospect has not made it out of the fifth inning in either May starts against the Phillies and the Diamondbacks. Minor, making his 12th start, has won three of his past four games, allowing seven earned runs in 22.2 innings (2.78) with 27 strikeouts.
Miscellaneous: The Braves squeeze in a doubleheader after weekend games were canceled Aug. 27-28 because of Hurricane Irene. They have two off days remaining the rest of the season, playing 20 games in the final 21 days.
About the Mets:
Batting: David Wright was named National League Player of the Week after he had 13 hits, including five doubles, in eight games. He hit .500 (13-for-26) with a .594 on-base percentage, with seven RBIs. Since coming off the disabled list July 22, the third baseman is hitting .325 (51-for-157) with six homers, 31 RBIs and 27 runs scored.
Pitching: Schwinden is making his first major league start after going 8-8 with a 3.95 ERA in 26 starts at Triple-A Buffalo. Gee has struggled of late after going 8-1 over the first three months of the season. In his past three starts he is 1-1 with a 9.20 ERA. He is 2-0 in four starts against the Braves this season.
Miscellaneous: The injury-plagued Mets continue to hover near the .500 mark. They have lost shortstop Jose Reyes to the disabled list twice with hamstring issues. Wright was out for an extended period of time with a fracture in his back. First baseman Ike Davis has missed most of the season because of an ankle injury. Ace Johan Santana has not pitched this season.
