Braves promote top prospect Heyward to Gwinnett
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Braves have promoted top prospect Jason Heyward to Class AAA Gwinnett, and he’s expected to be in uniform Saturday night in Lawrenceville for the Gwinnett Braves.
This will be the first professional game played by the Henry County High graduate played in metro Atlanta.
The Gwinnett Braves have three home games this weekend against Charlotte to finish out the regular season. They will clinch a wildcard berth with a win tonight or a loss by Syracuse. That’ll give Heyward a chance to play on into the Governors’ Cup playoffs, which include two home games in the first round on Sept. 9-10.
Heyward hit .352 (57-for-162) with 13 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 47 games for Class AA Mississippi. He missed a little more than a week with a bruised heel but returned on Tuesday night to collect three hits. He went 3-for-4 with a double on Friday night at Carolina, making him 6-for-10 in three games since his return.
“We believe his heel is much better,” Braves director of player development Kurt Kemp said. “This is an opportunity for him to step up to the next challenge.”
Heyward has already been invited to play in the Arizona Fall League come October.
