Hainsey scores as U.S. advances in hockey championships

The United States advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Hockey Championships despite a 4-3 overtime loss to Switzerland Tuesday. Thrashers defenseman Ron Hainsey scored two goals in the loss.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Belarus, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia, Russia and Sweden.

Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk continues his solid tournament. He has three goals and seven assists in six games for Russia. Other Thrashers still involved are Zach Bogosian and Colin Stuart (U.S.), Colby Armstrong (Canada), Ilya Nikulin (Russia) and Anssi Salmela (Finland).

The quarterfinals of the tournament, being played in Switzerland, begin Wednesday. The semifinals will be Friday and the gold medal game Sunday.
