When Grayson High opened in 2000, Mike Phillips came on as athletic director with the idea of building a program that would sustain itself over time.
Phillips resigned from his position Friday, knowing he accomplished his ambition. The Rams "have made tremendous strides," Phillips, 51, said. "I'm very proud of the programs. The one thing I wanted to do was build a foundation, create high expectations and compete with the best in the state.
"And from AAA when we started to 5-A, we've done just that."
After much contemplation, Phillips called it a career so he can concentrate on his family, particularly spending time with his 15-year-old daughter, Ashton.
"She's in cheerleading and track and I look forward to going to her games and just watching, as a father, relaxing," he said. "As an AD, there is so much you are responsible for that you're always wondering, 'What's going on over there.' Now, I can just watch and enjoy."
In Phillips' regime, Grayson won two girls region softball championships; the girls cross country team has been a perennial force; the football team made the playoffs the last two years and many athletes have gone on to compete in college.
"One of the great rewards is seeing coaches and players develop," Phillips said, "and to see the community enjoy it so much."
