San Francisco — The Braves welcomed back Brian McCann to the lineup Monday, and the All-Star catcher said he wasn't concerned about any post-concussion problems.

McCann had missed seven games on doctor's orders after sustaining a mild concussion in a July 27 home-plate collision with Philadelphia's Shane Victorino.

"I hope I get hit in the first inning by a foul ball," McCann said. "I'm not even going to be thinking about it."

The Braves went 2-5 and hit only two homers during the past seven games before Monday, playing without McCann or third baseman Chipper Jones.

Jones is on the disabled list recovering from a pulled hamstring and is expected to be activated Friday, the first day he's eligible.

McCann was hitting .302 with 20 homers and 63 RBIs before Monday, when he hit fourth in the lineup, between Mark Kotsay and newcomer Casey Kotchman.

The Braves traded cleanup hitter Mark Teixeira to the Los Angeles Angels on July 31 for Kotchman. McCann's next homer will move him past Teixeira for the team lead.

McCann hit .390 with five homers and 15 RBIs in his last 13 games before the concussion, and had posted 10 homers, 30 RBIs and a .393 on-base percentage in his last 42 games.

Before Monday, he had a .308 average with four homers and 19 RBIs in 65 career at-bats in the cleanup spot, and a .600 slugging percentage that was McCann's highest from any of the eight positions he'd batted in during his career.

Hampton to try again

Another veteran lefty, Mike Hampton, is still trying to shake off the rust.

He is scheduled to start tonight against the Giants, his third start since returning from a 35-month absence for injuries.

Hampton has no decisions and a 10.00 ERA in two starts, and gave up four runs, seven hits and four walks in five innings Thursday in a 9-4 win against St. Louis.

"Just go out and try to have some fun," he said of making his first start against the Giants since 2003. "These first two starts have been a battle, just a grind from pitch one all the way through.

"It's going to take some time to get the arm slot back and a feel for that, but it's there. I've just got to continue to work at it."
