UGAUGA

UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

MoMass grows on, off field

Time flies. That’s the general consensus of all the Georgia seniors I’ve talked to this week.

Every year about this time we interview a bunch of the seniors as they prepare for their final home game and Senior Day. Ultimately you’re looking for someone’s story that will serve as a good “senior spotlight,” but it’s also nice to catch up and talk about how much has changed since they first arrived on campus. Over four and five years, us beat guys get to know some of these players pretty well during their careers. Some of them we talk to almost every week of every season.

Mohamed Massaquoi is one such person. I can remember when MoMass first showed up on Georgia’s campus, a tall, skinny, wide receiver from Charlotte with an impressive football resume from Independence High. I remember how shy he was and how uncomfortable he was talking to the media. And I remember how he kind of shut down on us his sophomore season when he had a couple of drops and drew some criticism.

To talk to him today is to recognize a young man who has grown both on and off the field. He’s the consummate captain for the Bulldogs nowadays: An eloquent spokesperson articulating the team’s thoughts and feelings heading into and coming out of contests and the ultimate leader and warrior on the football field, making the tough catches on third down and the big catches when games are on the line.

As sports journalists it’s important that we remain unbiased when it comes to the team but you can’t help but root for guys like Massaquoi to do well. You’ve seen up close how hard they’ve worked and how far they’ve come. I felt the same way about Eric Zeier and Hines Ward and Verron Haynes and Jon Stinchcomb and Thomas Brown and many other Bulldogs over the years.

Following is a snippet of a brief interview I had with MoMass this week.

Q: It seems like yesterday you were showing up as a freshman.

MM: Yeah, it goes by fast. I can remember being recruited and the Georgia coaches first coming through the doors at Independence. It’s funny how fast time goes by. You don’t realize it ‘til you get a little bit older. It’s not until you actually get here that you understand.

Q: Who came to Independence that first time?

MM: Mike Bobo. I was actually in the 9th grade and he was recruiting Mario Raley. He kind of just looked at me and laughed because I was kind of a skinny kid.

Q: Did he know you were a prospect then?

MM: No, he didn’t care two cents about me [laughs].

Q: The first couple years you seemed pretty shy or guarded?

MM: I’ve always been a quiet guy. If you see me out you’d probably think the same thing. I’m really not a guy who you’ll see all the time making a bunch of noise. It was probably a mix of both, being a quiet guy and not really understanding the whole media aspect. I guess the older you get the more comfortable you get with it.

I see alot of Ward in Mo’Mass. Great leader, great blocker, willing to sacrfice personal numbers for the good of the team, I think a 2nd day draft pick, and hopefully a long career as a #2 or situational reciever in the NFL.

I can’t wait to read all the praise for MoMass from the very degenerates that booed him unmercifully in 2006. You know, the same crowd that is calling for every coaches head, from CMR to CMB. I wish MoMass and the Dawgs the best this weekend.

Thanks for FOUR great years MoMass! Through the years so many big catches, the bombs against Florida and Auburn, the big TDs and 2-pt conversion vs. the wreck, and many more. You totally outperformed Calvin “2-Catch” Johnson in the GT-UGA rivalry!

Great perseverance through the adversity during your sophomore season, we loved watching you and wish you the best of luck in the NFL!

Here’s hoping you have a few more historic catches in this showdown with GT as the Dawgs look to make it EIGHT IN A ROW.

31-0 at the half?!!

This will be a very interesting game matching two programs with two different mindsets:

UGA is just hanging onto a thread after TWICE getting Humiliated on national TV while trying gain national respect for a program that is the MICHIGAN STATE of the SEC - by virtue of their 5th place historical overall standing in SEC. With the high expectations, realization of being overated - the Dogs have not packed it in - give them credit - but are definately two incredible catches being dropped from being 7-4 (against KY and AUB). The national view of UGA is a group that in not ready for Prime Timeand an Underachieving group of individuals that did not gel as a team. UGA looks tired and menatlly gassed - not ready for war!!

Everyone senses that UGA is focussed to just playing out the season and hoping to hang onto a few more victories to save face to an emabarrasing season from a national exposure perspective.

TECH had zero expectations going into the year with a new coach - new system - low number of scholly players - just hoping to be relevant in some form or fashion. As the season progressed, excellent coaching has made a team out of a small group of good individual athletic players to where they now Believe in themselves as a unit and are Overachieving as a team!!! GT in mentally ready for war. The sense is that GT is Playing with a greater purpose and desparately wants to extend the season and Tackle big challanges.

With this in mind - here is Bama Stan’s Prediction:

UGA is talented - but mentally whipped and playing to hang on.

GT has a purpose and is mentally ready for war.

Tech 34 - UGA 21.

Other Predictions: BAMA 35 - Auburn 7 Gators 48 - FSU 17 So Carolina 21 - Clemson 17 Navy 34 - Army 7

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!

Dawg Fan, the sad thing is, anyone who would boo a player, thier own player, is a person who does not even give it a second thought later, they don’t even remember doing it. That Negative support is reeeeeeeealy helping. BOOING anyone that is not the opposing team first running out (and you need to be half laughing about it then) or a ref with a bad call, is purely LOW CLASS.

BTW, Thompkins, 23 points in his second game, with a bad ankle. Things are looking up.

Bama Stan-There is a real “war” going on over seas. College Football is not a war. It is a game played by young adults with most of them being great players and individuals off the field like MoMass.

This column is for us to show thanks to MoMass for his dedication of 4 years of his life to Georgia Football and it’s fans.

If we are the Michigan State of the SEC this year Bama has been the Purdue of the SEC in the last 10 years.

Dawgeatvol,

Yeah, people wanting to fire Richt or Bobo are idiots. People who think it’s time for a change with Martinez are different. I know our defense usually has done well statistically under Martinez, but they never have played with same fire as the under Van Gorder, and have hurt us more than the Van Gorder defense did. I think the people who call in the radio shows yelling for his head and blaming everything this season on him are stupid. But I think it’s reasonable for someone to think that it’s time for a change there.

BAMA STAN: Not that I care one way or another but I don’t like to see folks throw around inaccurate information as if it were fact… .

Actually, coming into this season Georgia (283-185-14) was THIRD in the all-time SEC football standings (source: SEC), behind Alabama (341-159-20) and Tennessee (308-153-19). The asterisk means it includes forfeits over NCAA issues… .

Of course, most of us are more interested in more recent history. Looking at that, coming into the season Georgia was first in the SEC over the last 10 seasons (97-30) and second over the last five (51-14). Alabama was 7th (70-54) and 8th (33-30), respectively… .

But the Tide has had a good season no doubt and beat Georgia handily this season after losing the previous three to the Bulldogs. Good luck vs. Auburn and Florida!

Hats off to them for putting together a great run, but don’t be so quick to forget about the last 10 years and start rubbing things in other SEC school’s faces. Meanwhile, back to the actual purpose of this blog….congratulations to Mo Mass. A quality player and person who has always made me proud to be a UGA fan. Big Fat,

Thoughtful criticism is welcomed and should be celebrated. I am merely referring to the fans who are filled with rage looking for blood because their expectations weren’t met. You know the same spankers who thought MoMass wasn’t meeting their expectations and decided to boo a 19 year old kid. I certainly am not giving a pass to CWM for some of the performances over the years. Just asking for cooler heads to prevail. If CMR is run out of town the program will be set back at least a decade. Who would want to coach at Georgia if that happened.

MoMass = Damn Good Dawg!!

He is exactly why college sports are so great. Look at the growth of this kid - not just as player - but as a person.

Really wish this kid the best at whatever he does in life.

Hey Bama Stanley - glad you figured out the bold feature by reading the formatting instructions.

You earned the right to rib Dawg fans by virtue of Bama’s excellent victory over the Dawgs - good for you!!!

Hey Bama Stan, you do realize that IF UGA beats TECH and wins our bowl game (hopefully against Ohio State) - there is a high probablility that UGA will end the season *ranked higher * than Bama.

BAMA will get STOMPED in the DOME in what will be known as the DOME STOMP 2008. Then, if Bama gets to play in the Sugar Bowl - Bama will get beat by UTAH - in what will be known as the BAMA FLOP 2008- ending a promising season in disappointment.

By the way Bama Stan - the Auburn game is * NO GIMME*. Game will be interseting as Auburn is showing life and signs of being …..Auburn. Predict this to be a nasty fight.

Also BAMA STAN - Just so you know - this is absolutely the best season to date for Nick Saban - a perrenial 8-4 coach with a life time college head coaching winning percentage of .672

If compared to - let’s just say - UGA’s last 4 last head coaches - Saban would rank 4th best out of the 5, or the Michigan State of coaches- from an historical perspective - if comparing the life time winning percentages against Georgia’s Mark Richt (.791), Jim Donnan (.722), Vince Dooly (.715) and Ray Goff (574).

How about that? WOW!! - SABAN is the MICHIGAN STATE of coaches when compared to UGA’s last four coaches spanning the last 44 years.

Look…chit happens every year and results are not what you would like. No need to dwell on it. Florida lost 4 games last year (including to lowly Michigan) but they have come back incredibly strong. Enjoy it while you can because that same Florida team is coming to beat down your azz shortly.

Dawgeatvol,

I figured those were the ones you were talking about. I agree. Criticsm is one thing. But to blatantly boo a 19 year old kid, even if people feel he is under performing, is pathetic. Coaches are one thing. Even though people are irrationale about that, at least they are proffessionals and it is their job. It’s completely different with the kids. One other thing, though, is this (booing college players) goes on a t alot of other places, especially in the SEC.

I’d like to thank everyone for the wonderful comments about my boyfriend of almost 3 years, Mohamed Massaquoi. I also have watched him mature and grow at UGA, and whether he’s reading this post or not (I normally hope he doesn’t read these), I’m very proud of the man he’s become. Simply stated, he’s human, he’s made mistakes on the field, and it’s good to know that even a few people are true Georgia fans-not just fans of winning. Of all my cheers for his catches and blocks on the field, I’ll be the most proud Dec 19, graduation day. Thank you again.

All 5 of them right? Seriously, though I wouldn’t say a senior class that has seen a minimum of 9 wins every year with a top 5 finish and an SEC title the most disappointing senior class of all time. That would probably go the 2005 seniors at Tennessee who were the #2 recruiting class in the country when they were freshman only to wind up 5-6 their senior season.

Some have said they do not boo the players, only the coaches. Two questions for You. How do the players know the difference, and has anyone ever booed Your kid? I think all the booing of Chandler last year cost UGA a couple of recruits and almost certainly added to his problem with dropped passes, just as it did wth Mo-Mass the year before. We fans can stop this, the next time someone around You is booing the Dawgs, call him OUT! If that does no good, contact security and have him removed. We don’t need so called fans” hurting the team.

Way to step in and put Bama Stan in his place!

Also if I remember Mo Mass was not the first UGA player to get booed. Hell not even the first WR. Remember Terrence Edwards? Stop the crying about the fans booing it makes us look like a bunch of sissies. Likw these players actually lose sleep over a fan booing them?

Jeez, if its not UGA fans making excuses for the season, then its the fans bashing other fans for how they conduct there fanhood. Do you boo? Or do you cheer loud enough?

Chip,

Thanks for putting Bama Stan in his place. Unfortunately, he will not realize what you have told him is true and unbiased. I used to have a lot of respect for Bama fans(especially in the 70s) but one fan like Bama Stan makes me want to pull for Fla in the SECCG. Maybe he can get rid of nine years of frustration if he says 31-0 enough. The only other thing I would like to say to him, but he is probably to young for it to mean anything to him is:

PUNT BAMA PUNT!!!

thanks for the article on MoMass. He has worked hard to improve himself as a player the last two years. The character he has shown on the field will certainly carry over into life and make him successful in whatever he chooses to do. I hope he has a big day Saturday and goes out a winner.

Listening to Tech fans (both of them) talk about Academics when we have a football game to play this morning, is a riot. Remind me again which team it is who Lost 6 Football Scholarships 2007-2008 for Academic Cheating.

Which football team it is who has the Worse Academic Progress Rate (APR.)

Which team it is who played Reuben Houston against us right directly after that same week he did an interview with this AJ-C stating that he was trying to set up a drug deal on the campus of Georgia Tech for 93 lbs. of drugs with his kid on his lap when he jumped from the van seeing the Campus Security behind him.

Next, you will tell us you are going to play Jerrard Tarrant, out on $40,000 bail for RAPE , who is your Starting Cornerback for Paul Johnson.

Paul Johnson hired Little Joey Hamilton as his Associate Director of Player Personnel. How sweet. Spends his first (and only) paycheck on drugs, gets so drunk he “couldn’t even stand up,” gets in an accident driving, leaves the scene, is caught a few minutes later on campus still with the drugs in his ashtray.

It doesn’t get any better than this, does it ?

To discuss the Academics of your football team.

Tech is harder because more of them flunk out at Tech.

Ha ha ha.

Heard it all now.

Try recruiting football players who don’t get caught up in the drug deals down there in the slums of Atlanta where your “campus” is, who can do the work down there and don’t Lose to Number 33 Virginia Tech, Number 34 North Carolina and Number 51 Virginia in the latest BCS Standings while we Lost to only Number 1 Alabama and Number 2 Florida.

Why is Tech Number 22 and UGA Number 11 ?

That answer is because Tech Lost to 3 Unranked Teams and UGA to only Number 1 and Number 2.

Oh, this is a cyclical series now-a-days, the AJ-C surmises this week.

Crap.

Since 1991, UGA has Won Two (2) 7-Game Winning Streaks against Tech. Tech has Lost 14 of the last 17 games.

I will not even bother telling you your 3 “wins” in the last 17 years all 3 cost you NCAA Major Infractions Database FOOTBALL PROBATION.

Then, that entire football staff MADE UP THEIR ENTIRE RESUMES.

Your attendance languishes down there with 49,000 showing up and your fans (both of them) come running in here saying some hockey game is the only reason why your washed out white-out in the last game was only one-third white anyway.

Why is it that your “student-athlete” MICHAEL HUTTS died on heroin overdose when his Dad and his Tech roommate, both, said that it was known that he was doing heroin this year.

Trey Dunmon was thrown out of the last football game for Georgia Tech for intentionally trying to injure an UGA football player last year, our Linebacker now in the NFL with 50 other former Bulldogs, Brandon Miller.

It has been a year from Hell for the Georgia Institute of Technology, this year.

And, you come in here like you have the bragging rights.

Tech cannot recruit its way out of a wet paper bag any longer with all this bad publicity, but you cannot even begin to try to address any of the bad publicity.

The Tech fans are Known to Be in Fact the Dead Last Worst Football Fans in the Entire NATION throwing debris at the players, carrying horrid signs and acting like thugs from the slums of an inner-city which has passed you by. You have 27 percent women on your campus and 41 percent Asian.

BOTH of you Tech fans.

No one could write such an Opening that you want to discuss the Academics at Georgia Tech.

Your school president, athletics director and football coach were all 3 run out of town on a rail for the Academics of your football team.

And, you come running in here wanting to discuss what ? Your Academics of your football team ?

Choose your point in this post and let’s have at this discussion you state you want to have, both of you Tech fans.

Shall We ?

Well you can thank Mo Mass for a great four years, as well as Brandon Southerland, and the rest of the seniors for their great contributions to the UGA program for the last four years. That being said, if Moreno & Owens leave, then Richt’s window of opportunity just closed. We can do without Stafford. Stafford’s arm strengh was the only thing that was not over rated about this clown. Sure am glad the Falcons already got their QB. Joe Cox is an awesome QB. Did anyone else notice how he handled himself in the few plays he was in on early in the season? He looks very imppressive, and has been in the system. We are fine at QB. Tailback position is another story. Caleb King is already a dissapointment. Backup quality back at best. Samuel folds up like a card house when someone bumps him. I don’t know where in the world all those stars came from, must be from his defensive play that we have not seen. I’m sorry but I am very dissapointed in Richt’s inability to see or acknowledge the fact that WM started to develop a disturbing pattern beginning with the Auburn game of 2005. There was no exuse for those first half points to that piece of s#%t AU team to have won that game, period. It has been downhill from there with some of the most embarrassing losses ever. Did WM not have film on West Virginia in 2005? What a joke. If, and that’s a big if, Richt can get his head out of his butt and do what is necessary to get the defense fixed, and Owens & Moreno return, We might have a shot at the East. Otherwise hang it up. What makes so many of the UGA people I have talked to is the fact that Saban shows up at Alabama who did not have as much talent, at least depth wise as UGA, and in his second year has a dominant defense, while that moron we have as a coach is spending his time standing around defending this clown Martinez who has been terrible against the stronger teams that UGA has played in his tenure. Hate to say it, but I’m afraid what little grip that Richt has had on our program is slipping away quickly.

I’ve been officially a Bulldog since 1976, and am going to support what is best for UGA, not a man that was hired to be the coach there, or a kid who wants nothing more than an NFL contract. NFL contracts are not something that benefits UGA. When Stafford was coming in all you heard was how Stafford wanted to be a “great one”. In his freshman year you could hang all of his interceptions and other bonehead plays on youth. When 2007 rolled around and things got tough it began to become obvious that Staffords ego would cause him to force the ball at times when he thought he was not “living up to the hype” or whatever. I’ve got news for you players like David Greene on offense and Pollack on defense never took anything for granted, and ALWAYS seemed to have UGA’s best interest at heart. I’ve got news for you sir, My opinions are shared with alumni who make large yearly donations to the atheletic dept. We need players who want to come and play for The University of Georgia, and not treat it as something that they feel they “have to do” to get to the NFL. I loved the article about Irvin wanting to come back and play another year. Man thats what’s being a Bulldog is all about. I am sorry if I am offending some of you, but there are a lot of true blue DAWGS that feel the same way.

Mohammed: I’m sure you’re a fine young man.In two days you will be abandoned by this win-at-all-cost-but-never-successfull lunatic fringegroup at UGA. I’m happy that you will able to finally get away from this crowd. Yes, your squad will play in some insignificant bowl game but it will be unnoticed as the sickies begin to plan once again for that never-to-be- achieved nat champ.

wreckmaniac, when will it occur to you that you have ZERO moral high ground, and absolutely no reason to categorize “this crowd” lunacy when you constantly come into a rivals sports blog, with no reason to be here, and with no other purpose than to insult everyone. Does that not register with you as a pretty low class thing to do?

Bama Stan

It must feel really cool to finally have a decent year. TO maybe, just maybe, be able to beat Auburn once out of the last how many? Oh, yeh. 7 years!!

Everyone says Fla. will beat you guys by 20. What a shame to only need 1 win to play for the NC and to be denied, thats where we were last year. At the end of it all you will be in the same mindset we are, Wait till next year.

NOT in the Coach Richt Era has Georgia Tech been ranked ahead of UGA in the Final AP Poll.

It will NOT happen again this year.

And, so the Tech fans come in here, log on as every handle they can think and say crap.

Why is that ?

Because Tech has NOT been ranked ahead of UGA in the Final AP Poll the entire 7-Year Period of the Coach Richt Era.

Hey Tech fans, guess what ?

I’ve been over to your Tech blog giving it back to you.

How does it feel ?

Paul Johnson’s Division 1-A (Bowl Subdivision Record at Navy 6 Years ) :

Against Ranked Football Teams, like the 1 he faces Saturday morning :

2007 :

LOST to Number 15 Rutgers 24-41.

Rutgers ended up NOT a Top 25 team in the Final AP Poll.

2006 :

LOST to Number 24 Rutgers 0-34.

LOST to Number 11 Notre Dame 14-38.

LOST to Number 23 Boston College.

Rutgers ended up Number 12 in the Final AP Poll.

Notre Dame ended up Number 17 in the Final AP Poll.

Boston College ended up Number 20 in the Final AP Poll.

2005 :

LOST to Number 7 Notre Dame 21-42.

Notre Dame ended up Number 9 in the Final AP Poll.

2004 :

Played NOT 1 ranked football team.

2003 :

LOST to Number 25 TCU 3-17.

TCU ended up Number 25 in the Final AP Poll.

2002 :

LOST to Number 21 NC State 19-65.

LOST to Number 9 Notre Dame.

NC State ended up Number 12 in the Final AP Poll.

Notre Dame ended up Number 17 in the Final AP Poll.

From 2002 to 2007, six years, Paul Johnson did not play any other Final AP Poll Top 25 team, nor ranked team at the time of the game other than just these 8 games in 6 years at NAVY.

Paul Johnson’s record against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in 6 years at NAVY was Zero Wins and 7 Losses.

The highest ranked team in the Final AP Poll that Paul Johnson has even played in all his games in the Bowl Subdivision (1-A) is Number 9 Notre Dame. That happened twice and Paul Johnson LOST both.

In 6 years at NAVY, Paul Johnson played exactly eight (8) ranked football teams, and LOST every single solitary game. 1 of those 8 ranked teams at game time, ended up NOT in the Final AP Poll Top 25 and that was Rutgers Last Year who Paul Johnson Lost to.

But, don’t get me off on a discussion about Un-Ranked Teams in the Final AP Polls that Paul Johnson LOST to because that number is 26 (twenty-six) including Number 33 Virginia Tech today, Number 34 North Carolina and Number 51 Virginia this season.

26 Losses in Seven (7) Seasons for Paul Johnson to Un-Ranked Teams, including this season.

Paul Johnson is 0 Wins and 7 Losses against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.

Paul Johnson also has 26 Losses against Un-Ranked Teams in the Final AP Poll.

Boston College is slated to play LSU in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, and The SEC will continue to Rule the ACC, knocking Boston College out of the Final AP Poll Top 25 no matter what a Lousy Maryland team does against them this week.

Georgia Tech is slated for something called the Congressional Bowl 20 December 2008, some 13 days before the Georgia Bulldogs play in the New Year’s Day $4.25 million dollar payout CapitalOne Citrus Bowl in Tampa. The Congressional Bowl has a payout which will not cover the expenses for sending the team who has Lost to 3 Un-Ranked Teams, and whose Paul Johnson has NEVER beat a Final AP Poll Top 25 team.

The actual number of arrests of Georgia players this year is around 15. A number of arrests are hidden or uncounted. Bolling beat a DUI charge through intervention of mysterious attorneys. When a driver refuses to take a breath test, that is an admission of guilt under Georgia Law. Secondly, sober people do not refuse breath tests. Similarly, the charges against the two players who fondled the pregnant woman vanished as did the charges against the player who was packing. When the players ran amok at the hospital, Richt had an attorney and bag man there before the police arrived, and we never got the full story of that sordid incident. Top players seem to receive legal representation while third or fourth stringers have to fend for themselves and are quietly kicked off the team at the end of the year to free up a scholarship. No wonder UGA leads the world in penalties.

How many more players can UGA get arrested before January? It’s becoming a joke. UGA and it’s band of criminals should be ashamed of the way that Richt and the team behave. Players given preferential treatment when the average joe would go to jail. Georgia and there fans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting this. UGA is supposed to be a top school. I now am starting to doubt it. One question should Richt be held accountable and fired for this like he would be in the real world?

By AltamahaDawg

November 28, 2008 1:23 PM | Link to this

gec, you are really reaching there bud.

Which player received preferential treatment? and how do the fans support kids getting DUIs?

And who is the band of criminals that should be ashamed of the players and coach. I thought you were saying they were the band of criminals.

And in what real world job would he be fired for this?

Did you just want to say something but couldnt figure out any real points, and just decided to string together some words?

Let’s roll down through some names here….Pete Carrol, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Urban Myer, Nick Sabin, Jim Tressel…..these are Tier 1 coaches with Tier 1 players. Georgia has Tier 1 players but a Tier 2 coach. If you honestly feel that Mark Richt’s name should be included in the list above, you are in denial. Richt might be a nice guy but he lacks the leadership and tactical skills needed to compete for a national championship on a consistent basis….it’s either now or later as far as making the change.
