Martin says he’s in a runoff — Chambliss says, ‘Not yet’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
During the pre-dawn hours, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss slipped below the 50 percent mark, and the U.S. Senate race now appears headed toward a runoff with Democrat Jim Martin.
The Chambliss campaign said this morning that it’s not conceding anything, and will wait for a smattering of precincts, absentees and paper ballots to be counted.
The Democratic campaign says that it’s now in runoff mode. Martin has an 11:45 a.m. press conference scheduled.
Secretary of State Karen Handel has the race as follows on her web site:
Chambliss: 49.9%
Martin: 46.7%
Libertarian Allen Buckley: 3.4%
As of this moment, Chambliss needs to pick up 10,334 votes to clear the 50-percent-plus-one mark.
If there is indeed a runoff, early voting could begin as early as Nov. 17. The runoff election is Dec. 2
Handel’s office has already prepared the following timetable:
— Nov. 10/11: Expected certification of election results. Absentee Ballot production begins. Early voting can begin when ballot building for absentee ballots is completed.
— Nov. 17: Anticipated date ballots should be ready. Counties can begin early voting. While it is a county-by-county decision, there should be consistency state-wide.
— Nov. 24-26: Advance voting begins (week prior to Election).
— Nov. 27,28: State holidays for Thanksgiving.
— Dec. 1: No voting (state prohibition against ballots cast or issued day prior to election).
— Dec. 2: Run-off elections.
Other runoffs statewide include the PSC race between Republican Lauren McDonald (47.8 percent) and Democrat Jim Powell (47.3 percent), and a race for the state Court of Appeals, featuring Sara Doyle (22.5 percent) and Mike Sheffield (20.9 percent).

Without Obama supporters going to the polls in droves, this run-off should be a slam dunk for Chambliss.
I just cannot believe we have to put up with these two for another month.

Why would Democratic voters not go to the polls if a supermajority is possible? If it does come down to that, the DNC will send all of the big hitters to Georgia. Expect appearances by the Clintons, Jimmy Carter and of course, Obama himself.

My wife and I are life long conservatives. We are both in our 50’s. Here’s my take on your campaign.
I know where Jim Martin stands on the issues, “SPEND, SPEND, SPEND” - I lived in downtown Atlanta for over 20 years. Unfortunately, that same “SPEND, SPEND, SPEND” is what you and most current republicans are doing. So why should I reward that action with my vote.
The reason you’ve lost the die-hard support of us is your positions on issues are democratic in leaning. From the original immigration bill, the massive farm bill (you represent ALL of Georgia, not just the farmers) and the most recent 700 BILLION taxpayer funded bailout, I don’t see much of a difference between you and the most liberal wing of the democratic party.
Hopefully, this will be a wake up call to come back to the conservative part of the republican party and take a stand for the taxpayers.

Jim Martin is a good and decent man. Jim has stood up for children and women’s issues all his life. I think it would be the fair thing for Georgia to have one Republican Senator and one Democratic Senator to reflect our diverse state. Many of the negative ads against Chambliss were sponsored by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and were not under the control of Jim Martin. I can’t believe people still think Democrats would spend spend spend, when the largest debt in our history has been created by Republicans.

This is the same Saxby Chambliss who defamed the honorable war veteran Max Cleland. There is no point sending an ineffective Republican to the Senate when if we send Jim Martin, he will be with the majority party and can bring more to teh table for Georgia as a whole. Chambliss will simply be an impotent republican who will accomplish nothing for our great state. Why waste your vote on Chambliss who will be relegated to an office next to the men’s room! Let’s send a democrat who can actually get on som committees and make real change and direct some of the benefit to Georgia!!

Please throw this guy Chambliss out! He has done nothing, is not a statesman, does not have a voice in the senate, throw him out. He has low character for what he did to Max, and now he does it to another veteran. Georgia is supposed to be pro -military, yet you backed Bush over McCain in 2000 and you backed Bush over Kerry in 2004. Both Bush opponents served honorably. Georgia, you are not like AR, TN, MS, LA, KT, AL, you have great city centers that benefit from progressive thinking. The rest of the country has better education systems than the south, they have healthier people, embrace the blue state way of life, it is a hell of a lot better than what is going on in the south.

Think, people, think!!! It is NOT good for either party, Democrat Party or Republican Party, to get too much control and power. The Democrats now have majority control in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. If the Democrats get to the magic number of 60 Senators then our government will become a run-away-freight-train and you can count on high taxes affecting everyone. We need a Senate that can at least put the “brakes” on to slow this thing down. I am truly an independent. I would be ashamed to known as a Democrat or a Republican. We need another party to step up, such as the Libertarian Party, but right now we need to vote for Saxby Chambliss in the runoff. Senator Chambliss made me mad when he voted for the bailout of Wall Street, but if Jim Martin had been our Senator then he would have voted for it too no matter what he said during the recent campaign. The truth is that there were two votes in Congress on a bailout and the Republicans voted “NO” the first time around. The Democrats voted “YES” TWO in two different votes. Jim Martin would have voted “YES” TWO times also. Think hard about this my friends and then I think you’ll see we should vote for Saxby Chambliss.

Saxby is the ultimate politician who will say or do anything to get elected. That being said, I’d be willing to look past that if someone is an effective legislator. Saxby Chambliss, however, is one of the most authoritarian legislators out there. He has a 7% rating from the ACLU and a 0% rating from the League of Conservation Voters. These numbers are sickening to anyone who respects the environment or values their individual rights. I know Libertarians out there fall for his fair tax stance, but how many rights are you willing to give up for that?

My thoughts, for what they’re worth…still no way I’m rewarding Republicans with my vote after the disaster of the past eight years…I had my first opportunity yesterday to ‘get even’ with Saxby for his heinous treatment of Max six years ago, and now it looks like I’ll have another one Dec 2…even a state full of peckerwoods can smell the coffee, and/or the stench of a rotting political party (and you know who I mean), or feel which way the wind’s blowing and realize that the only hope Georgia has to begin to show that there are at least some ‘enlightened’ folks down this way is to elect at least one statewide Democrat that can play a part in what will be a historically significant, Democratic-led, resurgence of what America was supposed to have stood for all along.
To my ‘conservative’ friends…don’t worry, if you play your cards right, we’ll put in a good word for you.

Going After Migrants, but Not Employers By STEVEN GREENHOUSE Published: April 16, 2006
AS they fanned into the Vidalia onion fields of Georgia, the 45 federal agents were doing exactly what they thought they were supposed to do. It was 1998, and they had just arrested 21 illegal immigrant farm workers and were about to round up hundreds more. But the raid met with a stinging rebuke from what might have seemed a surprising source: two powerful Republicans from Georgia’s Congressional delegation. Saxby Chambliss then a representative and now a senator, accused immigration officials of using “bullying tactics,” while Senator Paul Coverdell denounced “a moonshine raid” against “honest farmers who are simply trying to get their products from the field to the marketplace.” The Immigration and Naturalization Service backed down, granting temporary amnesty to illegal onion pickers in 19 Georgia counties.

Have we all forgotten what Saxby has done for us in the Senate? Did he do anything to help economics, gas prices, or increase jobs? Maybe not.
But, he did introduce Resoluton 262:
Recognizing July as “National Watermelon Month” will provide the watermelon industry with many avenues to not only market their product but also educate the public about the health benefits associated with consuming watermelon through different watermelon related programs and activities.
I happen to love watermelon, but since I lost my job, I am unable to afford one!

Chambliss is scum. He’s in trouble not because of Barack Obama, but because he has not particularly well served the people in Georgia. You can bet that the Democrats, who still have a war chest full of money, are going to descend on this state in droves. Martin will win the run-off, since Chambliss spent six years in lock-step with Bush. Some Republlicans still don’t get it. It wasn’t just Democrats who rejected them so soundly this year; it was the nearly 40% of the population who are independants. Georgia is on its way to going blue again. It never has been a Republican state, but only switched because of the wink-and-a-nod racism that has been prevelent in the GOP since 1980.

Wake up people! The Wall Street Crisis developed from Jimmy Carter and Billy Clinton and Obama’s good friends the thugs at Acorn, pushing and bullying banks into giving “subprime loans” to people who couldn’t qualify for a conventional loan, nor could they afford to pay them back when the interest rate was raised. If Congress hadn’t bailed out the banks, what do you think would have happened the next time you needed a car loan or tried to buy a house or buy something with a credit card? Businesses were already being frozen out of the credit market just those few days before the “fix” was announced. Do you not understand that many many jobs would have been lost? Are you really that stupid? If the whole credit market had been allowed to completely melt down, you would have been screaming at Congress to DO SOMEHTING to fix it!

A runoff? Great, another chance for Georgia to embarrass itself before the rest of the nation. Because we seem to favor do-noting order takers in our statewide politicians, we can look forward to another 6 years of Sen. Chambliss on the missing persons list.
Has any US Senator made their presence less known than Saxby has? I have yet to see him appear on any sunday morning news show, on any piece of legislation, or on any agenda beyond the nebulous concept of “Georgia Values”, that he espoused this campaign. What are the Georgia Values of which he speaks? Judging by his actions the last 6 years, I would conclude he is referring to Do-Nothingism, Stand-Stillness, and No-Sponsorship - all qualities we discriminating Georgians want represented to the rest of the country, right?
While the rest of the country has at last showed some maturity in who it sends to Washington, you can be certain that with the re-election of Chambliss, Georgia will remain sufficiently on the sidelines when it comes to seizing opportunity to direct our future. Chambliss is like a ballplayer who was finally called up to the major leagues, but decided he would rather sit on the bench than start in the lineup.
A state which once referred to itself as “Empire State of the South”, signifying a ray of light in a region otherwise cast deep in shadow, Georgia has fallen steadily backwards. As a state, we are no longer a symbol of progress, but a case of Has-Beens that once had a chance at becoming a leader, but gave up too easily to wallow in deluded self-admiration. The next time you here some state politician use the phrase “Great State of Georgia”, ask yourself, what Greatness is such that it must be constantly reminded in speech and phrase and print.
No single election can change our destination by itself. But if we are ever to change, it must start somewhere. Would a state that is truly Great be represented by a Saxby Chambliss?

Hey, Richard, you ought to look closely at the two bailout packages that were voted on by Congress. They are both corporate welfare, but the first one was better than the one that got passed. Republicans and some Democrats held out for pork in the second package; that wasn’t responsibility that stayed their hands the first time around, it was greed. The original proposal from the W. (Worst) administration was by definition the worst of all. Big surprise: our money is going to finance corporate mergers and buyouts, not to unfreeze credit. IMHO, anybody who is badmouthing Max Cleland ought to take a good look in the mirror and decide on a course of self improvement.

Fortunately, you don’t get to decide what a “true Christian” is. Jesus does.
And I know plenty of Christians who are tired of being ORDERED to vote on a single issue and ignore all the other Christian values they cherish… like peace, justice, caring for the poor and homeless, stewardship of the earth, ending the death penalty, etc.
Abortion as a ‘wedge’ issue is dying along with the evangelical influence on the GOP. And both the Republican Party and America will be better for the change.

I saw many comments here on the “Fair Tax.” I did quite a lot of study on this previously, so want to clear up a couple of things.
The reason that people are against it is that it should never be passed UNLESS the bill also INCLUDES ABOLISHMENT OF THE IRS IN THE SAME BILL! The problem is that if it isn’t done this way, the tax will go on top of the IRS income tax … not instead of it.
In reference to another comment, the IRS doesn’t decide where our money goes. It is strictly the “POLICE” for the Federal Reserve to make sure they get their money. We don’t need the IRS if the Fair Tax is set up correctly … that is, the stores and businesses that charge tax now will just collect and turn in the additional tax as well. Certain large items such as homes are suppose to be exempt. It’s been awhile since I researched it several years ago, so I can’t remember if food is taxed … probably not, although they tax our food in Georgia!
The Federal Reserve is not the “government.” It is a private corporation that begun in 1933. Only one of its 12 or 13 owners is American (I believe it is Rockefeller). The money goes out of the country. Think of it as a great big credit card for our Government with no limits! You can easily confirm this by doing you own research.
Therefore, if the Fair Tax were set up correctly, people who can afford to buy more pay more tax. People who buy less pay less tax.
Whether or not you agree with the concept, it is important that you know the facts. Of course, how can we trust our Government to pass a valid and safe Fair Tax law, and abolish the IRS, after the way it screwed us with the Bailout Bill!
Thank you.

I live in Oregon and just survived a nasty US Senate race in which our two term Republican incumbant bit the dust.
As blue as Oregon is, we finally have two Democrats representing our left coast interests. But a Georgia Democrat is not the same as an Oregon Democrat.
The southern hospitality that you kind folks in Georgia can offer to the rest of America is to do what Oregon did - vote out the incumbant and send Jim Martin to the US Senate. Your kind consideration is appreciated.
And I understand the DNCC ads - we got ‘em here too. But hell, this is Saxby Chambliss we are talking about - do you ever wonder how much of those DNCC ads might be actually true?????
Thanks to all Georgians who are going to consider the outcome of the make up of the US Senate - and vote for Jim Martin.
